How a 10+ Year Old Team is Still Good in Gen 9.

- Pokemon Competitive Singles has been turned on its head with the release of The Indigo Disk DLC.
And yet, rather than turning to all the new options for Teambuilding inspiration, this player decided to try and Rework a Gen 5 Sample team with new sets for Gen 9 OU.
Surprisingly, this team by "Dragonite4242" with identical Pokemon to a popular Gen 5 OU team has managed to achieve an impressive #4 position on the Gen 9 Ladder.
I guess some ideas just stand the test of time folks.

Some will never figure out how to get Primarina in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Primarina Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Primarina Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.
Arceus exists.
The below text is very relevant to many people.
Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Will he see it? Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on UA-cam. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

"You're as beautiful as the day I lost you."
"Ammongus could not use spore in gen 5, and now it can in gen 9"
Well that certaintly aged well
It’s honestly beautiful how even in this power crept metagame, Keldeo, Ttar, Mamo, Drill, Torn, and Latios manage to still find a place in SV OU.
The cream always rises to the top
I've been using Keldeo and Latios in SV OU and they are genuinely the most fun thing to play ever! Nothing short of defensive Gholdengo can switch in to Latios and Vacuum Wave Keldeo always catches opposing Meowscaradas off guard.
but not lando-t
@@ogmechsftw Lando-t isn't even hard to deal with at the moment, it's just a colossal pain in the neck.
@@goobingtonsI have never heard this before but I love it lol.
There is something I think a lot of people forget when it comes to how the tiering system works. (Not accusing you, just a thought brought up by the video)
There are plenty of lower tier pokemon that are very good even at the OU power level... but that isn't what defines a mon's tiering status. Usage statistics are. Despite the fact that the usage based tiering system will USUALLY have pokemon placed in the highest tier that they can preform in, that isn't always the case.
The best example in my opinion is Gastrodon. It has almost exclusivly been a UU - RU ranked pokemon, but has had a very legitimate OU niche in every single generation.
Or a more fun example, Zoroark(s); the original has excelent synergy with gengar as a disguise, and hisuian's immunities are very easy to make use of. Do they hit the hardest? No. The fastest? No. But if you know how to bluff it then you can easily blast games wide open. Hell this generation the og Zoroark got encore, which is incredible for dealing with set up mons that think they got in against a passive wall.
I'm suprised you never mentioned Quagsire, since it perfectly represents what you're saying. It's consistently been one of the best Unaware users of the older gens. But in all seriousness, this is something I think people forget and it's always nice to remind them.
It’s like how terrakion immediatly went down to PU while he obviously didn’t belong there
It's more about consistency and splashabiliy than anything else.
I remember when Tangrowth was RU in gen 6 and it suddenly shot up in usage after it was featured on a tournament team and ppl realized how good it was so it just kept ending up in OU from then on. 100/125 physical bulk with Regen+ decent offensive stats on both sides and a really wide movepool for a grass type (both offensively and support moves) are great. Even its base 50 Spdef isn't unusable since you can patch it up with an AV so it can take a hit from just about everything. Grass seems like bad defensive typing on paper but it helps take on Ground, Water, and Electric types which are all notoriously hard to switch into.
I feel like at least in gen 6 and 7, RU had some hidden gems that had better viability in OU than UU. Rhypherior, Cofagrigus, Escavalier, Mega-Camerupt, etc.
@@mr.sandman7339Dugtrio is another example of an RU Pokémon becoming OU after players realized Arena Trap is a good ability lol
I love the idea of looking back at older generations and reusing those ideas. This is why I think that False Swipe Gaming is such a good channel with their detailed histories on the competitive use of pokemon. They have given me many ideas that I have used before to varying successes. I think there is to gain from recycling previous sets. Why fix something that isn't necessarily broken.
Very epic video and very impressive from Dragonite
But if you close your eyes...
Does it almost feel like nothing has changed at all?
The writing on this video is spectacular. Not a wasted breath, and quite informative.
Jimothy Cool indeed.
He's so good at choosing what to include, truly feels like the whole video has equal value and it ends when he's said what needs said on the topic. Underrated
I think Mamo is actually really underrated as it matches well into a lot of big threats at the moment.
Might be a sleeper hit in general, what with how good snow is now.
Its somewhat common for lower tiered wallbreakers to be viable in OU. Mamo is a great example. The reason they don't get alot of usage is cause there's just so many pokemon that can play the role of wallbreaker.
Mamo has a particularly nice set of qualities that keeps it relevant. Ice/ground stab, ice shard prio, knock off. Also its an ice type thats not completely defensively crippled by its typing due to thick fat and being neutral to stealth rock.
Its the core. Once a team has a solid core and synergies well with each other. It will stand the test of time
Tried and true strategy can still work wonders. I remember when I hadn't played OU for a while and I felt like being devious due to some bans I was mad about at the time, I brought back Gen6 Flynite in Gen 9 and I caught some poor souls in blind confusion. Obviously that wasn't as thoroughly examined as much as this, more like a funny anecdote, but my point is that this is an inspiration to many who teambuild I'm sure. Your experience still means something even with power creep if you want to play Gen 9
Seeing Jim explain the importance of Amoongus after the Gen 9 sleep ban hurt my soul...
Tyranitar in OU: *Lord give me one more chance*
waiting for tyranitar to return OU in spite of everything thanks to a mole
On a funny note, Tyranitar was used more on the ladder January than Garchomp. Turns out, being Excadrill's Sand bitch worked pretty well to it's benefit
The power of love and homosexuality
"Because in gen 5 it can't even use spore, now it can" how funny that with a bit more time, even this is now identical.
Ttar with a Kevin Garnett quote is so accurate
My fav pokemon of all time is gen 6 talon. Its the sole reason why i play gen 6 ou every week
Was amusingly enough amazing on rain and stall teams of all things.
Specs Gale Wings Hurricane or Flame Body bulky.
Then Moltres got brought back.
I wonder if there are any other old OU teams that can work, very cool
The new outro music is so cute 😍
This is a competitive team from gen 5 OU, and this is a competitive team from gen 9 OU. You'll notice folks that the teams are exactly the same. But that's not big deal of course, we all know that we can use pokemon from old generations in new games.
What's the big deal? Well,
This Gen 5 team has reached an impressive rating of number 4 on the Gen 9 ladder.
All of these pokemon were OU ranked back in gen 5
all of the pokemon were ranked OU back in Gen 5

Wow, it’s crazy that the team I used for all of Indigo Disk’s DLC is still good. Guess it makes sense since it’s just Unova again.

Justice for our favorite T -Rex. ❤️
Bro truly has one more in him
it's so sad that it was not playable in gen 8 just because gliscor was not available
I haven't played since gen 6 but I watch quite a bit of new competitive singles over the past year or so. I was wondering, why does Life Orb seem so much rarer now than it was back then? I feel like 3+ pokemon on every team would have LO and now you see stuff like expert belt, new boots even on SR-neutral pokemon, leftovers on offensive threats etc. just seems kinda weird to me lol.
It's easier than ever to chip down the opponent while keeping your own mons healthy:
1.) Back in gen 6, we didn't have a hazard stacking metagame like we do now so it was easier to run LO when spikes were a lot more rare.
2.) We now have Terastalization which can be used defensively to get extra LO chip or flip a match up completely.
3.) there was no Boots+Regen spam stalling your progress while you get chipped down.
4.) There's not as much reliance on mixed attacking now versus just clicking a Banded or Specs move; resists don't matter as much if your moves and attacking stats are strong enough.
5.) Some mons just have better items now like all of the Paradox mons getting booster energy.
6.) Priority is everywhere and you don't want to suddenly be in range of an E-speed or Sucker punch bc of LO recoil.
7.) Longevity + Stat boosting is often better than just attacking in this meta, especially for something you want to be a wincon. For example, LO Weavile can dent teams pretty well as it slowly KOs itself with LO and hazards but Boots+SD Weavile is often more likely to sweep and end the game, esp with the aforementioned hazard support vs the opponent; this point is more role-dependent tbf but I still think it contributes to the lack of LO mons.
This is insane.
this is a competitive team from gen 5 OU, and this is a competitive team from gen 9 OU
Cant wait to use this on the ladder cuz nostalgia and get the shit kicked out of me
It's actually a decent team lol

I encountered this team on ladder once. Pretty solid, but nothing groundbreaking
Jimmy should do a video about when the Gen would look like without knock off. That move feels so over-centralizing.
Swap out Scizor and Alakazam for the pony and shroom and that’s legit been my mainstay team for several gens
i played it back then and will use it again :)))) it was perfect at the time
I wonder how long will it take for more people to realize how Scizor's Bullet Punch is way too op for gen9ou, currently have him on my team and I don't have much problems

Interesting that 4 pokemon on this team are weak to water yet its viable.
I cringed seeing the overlapping weaknesses, but I'm sure it kicks
I’m not sure anymore but before the sleep ban in gen 5 i’m pretty sure amoonguss was OU, now it is RU
Not sure if that team is so good. It has 3 Ground Types and Tyrannitar. Its wicketly weak to Wather, and as such Rain. I guess Amongus, and to some extend Keldeo help out, but does Amongus work well in Sand?
you dont need to worry about rain teams, sand stream counters it instantly

Me when they say powercreep is real
I mean gen 5 was THE powercreep gen before gen 9 so if there's any old gen's team able to scrap with the new guys on the block it would be gen 5
Gen 5 and gen 9 are the most broken metal I've ever seen.
Tried the team, first game. Opponent loads up Volcarona. I see 0 checks 0 answers. Probably still a good team and something to play around but it looked grim right away.
Why'd the outro music change?
What’s a good sub for keldeo I’m doing a 1v1 tourney with my group of friends and no legendarys so I was wondering if there was anything else I could use

Just from seeing the team. I'm guessing it's a mainly sand team which is already good with the sandstorm giving them chip on opponent and some spec res while having good type coverage with fly dark steel and ice. Them a stall Mon in amongus plus the sword horse for stab through a for that somehow gets set up.
MR SWINE IS STILL GOOD

Unfortunately Ttar is complete ass in UU, and only rose back due to low ladder spamming it

How does this team handle something like Walking Wake?

I never understand mixed atackers, why would i use -def nature? My pkm will die quickly, even worse in tytar since it is 4x weak to fight and 2x ground.
Just don't switch into Physical attackers
You weren't taking that physical fighting move with ttar anyway. At least with -def you keep your sand Spdef boost.
