Sony PlayStation. SCPH-1001 vs SCPH-9001

  • Just a quick overview of both models. The SCPH-1001 can be found on eBay as "Rare" or and "audiophile" model. The truth is that its really not. Its just a typical launch model with a few bugs that Sony corrected in every revision after the 1001.
    I was under the assumption that the 1001 was the "best" revision of the PlayStation, after receiving a free 9001 I realised I was wrong about that. They're all similar.
    If your looking for a PlayStation its a safe bet to purchase any model after the 1001 since it will be a more reliable system.

    Turns out there is actually a discernable difference between these
    the SCPH-100* models specifically had an issue with their graphics chip, where they were slow to read from memory and had issues which caused banding in rendering gradients.
    Tomb Raider and Toy Story 2 are known to show the issue off most notably
    It's not something that will really take away from the game, but when viewed side by side, a SCPH 500*, 550*, 700*, 900* will have far better gradient shading, while the 100* model has this banding issue where the gradient is in large distinct steps and isn't smooth at all
    (The last number in the SCPH number is meaningless BTW, it's just the region which the system is locked to. 0 is Japan, 1 is America, 2 is Europe, 3 is UK, etc)

      I play Shadow Man PS1 off of an SCPH-1001 model from November 1995. It does exactly the same thing you described with Tomb Raider and Toy Story 2. Like Shadow Man's lighting is not really dynamic on this unit, but mostly just lines of colours (almost Doom era-ish). Oddly though, all of the SCPH-1001 models I've played after January 1996 never gave me this gradient banding. 8 units in 20 years that I've resold, none from 1995. It was a very long time ago and the unit is long since trashed, but I also had a launch Japanese model (SCPH-1000, dated September 1994 on the bottom lids & inside) that was modded as a kid, and I remember Shadow Man and to a lesser degree Quake 2 doing the same gradient banding as my current SCPH-1001 model.
      Those Japanese 1994 units today, unless sealed I assume are all literally dead from how bad the laser was & how only around a half million (my guess) were made that year. Mine died in 2003. But I do recall it having the gradient banding issue that my current November 1995 SCPH-1001 has. Likewise, I have yet to see a model made in 1995 in a decade, the only time I saw one and immedialy bought it & use it still today.
      With that said, I have no other PS1 machines from those two years to further experiment. They're just too rare to find units that even boot up, let alone come across in person or on eBay.
      So overall, I assume it's a problem particularly with the 1994 and 1995 batches in particular, and they improved upon it in January 1996, at the very earliest maybe (?) December 1995. Was this your experience? It might shed a light on the issue.

      The SCPH-1000 has an S-video port, while the 1001 and 1002 dont, so the last number isnt completely meaningless.

      @@albalog2449 It's not all SCPH-1001 that exhibit the issue, only the ones with the PU-7 mainboard that were manufactured until around early November 1995. The banding issue was fixed on the PU-8 motherboard, which started manufacturing in late November 1995 and I believe is the more common variant.

    You can swap the drive assembly out from a PSOne into a SCPH 1001 and your golden. The issue with the original models were the sled material would wear and that was corrected in later revisions

    I understand the benefits from having a newer model system closer to the end of it's life. It's nothing compared to the chipset of the originals. If you know the stuff "under the hood" so to speak, then you know how to tap into the stuff that makes things higher quality than our standard now. Hence the "Audiophile" version. Maybe you can't hear the difference. But it's by far the quality you can draw from the machine. I am by now means an Audiophile, I just open up my machines enough to know how much they differ.

      @@magenta864 it's been almost a year since I wrote that so I'll do my best to remember. If you're looking for the audiophile experience on the model 1 PS1, you need to make sure it has the RCA ports on the back. Even though it's a model 1 PS1 it has several variations. As time goes by they find ways to lower price of production and a lot of the time that means getting rid of ports. A lot of systems go through this. I'm pretty sure the GameCube eventually was produced without the "digital av out" towards the end of its life cycle. You just need to look up the variations to make sure you're getting the one you want.

    Also.. Audiophiles don't just take a stock 1000 Series PlayStation and rig it up to their High-End Audio Receiver... No... They actually modify the Audio Output circuitry of the PlayStation console in order to make it "Audiophile".

      I was told that the launch console was "rare" as well. However the PS1's I see for sale more often then not they're 1001's lol. So like everything in this hobby there seems to be more lies and hype to create a false scarcity, which of course means people have an excuse to sell for higher prices. I find this to be true with Non-TMSS Model 1 Sega Genesis consoles, I've seen probably 60 of them and I've bought and sold 12 myself. They're a dime a dozen but resellers say they're "rare".

      If you're talking about the way the system sounds when it's in operation they all sound the same. The older models sound noisy if the CD ROM drive is worn out. Which in most cases is the reason why they don't work. The spindle motors wear out and cause a knocking sound as the motors output shaft wobbles inside the worn out bushings.

      @@RobertNES816 I have noticed that the lasers can sound a bit differently depending on the ps1 model. It is the sled/pickup motor that is different. Some are noisier (faster?) than others. But I don't know which one is the quiestest.

      @@stefang8213 to my ears the quietest consoles are the ones with the least amount of hours on them. The older models typically have worn out spindle motors which make a knocking sound and when the sleds wear out the gear noises get louder. "No difference in sound quality" tell that to audiophile communities they themselves even said 1000 model sounded good but not 3,000 bucks system beater good.
    Having RCA jacks is a big plus compared to just a AV Multi,one reason why Neo Geo CD sound so punchy with their arranged music in their games because it have RCA jacks.
    9000 supposed to be the best fat model but it was cut out too much goodies ports and the build quality took a hit even my 5500 model felt tighter built.
    I still have both 5500 and 9000 around but the just didn't have that "It's a Sony" build quality.

    • @RobertNES816

    • @RobertNES816
      @RobertNES816  5 років тому +2

      Also having RCA Jacks means nothing, it's just a connection point for audio, the multi out is basically the same thing for audio. The 5001 and 7001 are said to have similar audio profiles, when I had my 5001 it sounded identical. Same with my 7001. The 1001 is over hyped like allot of things in this hobby. Allot of "audiophile" types tend to over think these types of things anyways.

    • @RobertNES816
      @RobertNES816  5 років тому +1

      As for build quality the 7501 and 9000 took the biggest hit. The plastic quality didn't degrade or anything but the parts count and the elimination of the serial out in the back ruined any chance of cheating or otherwise manipulating the software or hardware.

    • @stevesstuff1450
      @stevesstuff1450 5 років тому +2

      It's not the RCA jacks that made the original PS1 a better quality CD player, but it was in fact the DAC that was used (Digital to Analog Converter). In the earliest PS1 models a higher quality DAC was used, but replaced by a cheaper, lesser quality (though still decent) DAC in later revisions of the console.
      A Google search will detail the different DACs - I don't remember the details here, but yeah, there was a real reason for the 'audiophile' tag on the original PS1..... And playback through a TV speaker is NOT going to show any difference! I needs to be connected to a decent HiFi amp and speakers to reveal it's quality ;-)

    • @albalog2449

      For a casual player the SCPH-9001 is perfectly fine, and it even has better graphics than the 1001, 5501, and 7001. In the case of the 9001 it's noticeably sharper because IICR they added an extra mb of VRAM. Ambitious games like Shadow Man and Quake 2 look and play really good on it, and I noticed it makes less motor noise (Shadow Man loads a lot when playing). The PSone and the 7501 (with the 5, *_not_* the 7001) also have the same sharper graphics as the 9001. So in this case, the 7501 has the GameShark slot, but the best motor and graphics as the 9001 and PSone.
      In the case of the 1001, 5501 and 7001 I actually consider them the inferior units. The 1001's motor aged like sour milk, their plastic prone to gray, and the ones from 1994 and 1995 have worse dynamic lighting and have gradient banding. Not to mention FMV skipping. The 5501's and 7001's motors are slightly better, but they still have the FMV skipping issues (maybe not as much as the 1001 but still) and not sharp graphics.
