All this tech and the success of the PSX is HILARIOUS when you understand that it was initially supposed to be just a CD based ADD-ON to the SNES but Nintendo pulled out at the last second, forcing Sony to make this a standalone product which later became the PSX!!!...
4:06 Wow so after 27 years I actually didn't know that the PlayStation could map FMV *onto a polygon* That's ridiculous, but also why was this feature even here? And where was it ever used?

finally! a TRUE console "PLAYSTATION" from an amazing innovation Japanese company "SONY" came in & made gaming so much way better, cooler, hard core, better game play, better controllers, better made Japanese/Korean/Chinese/Asian games " all 1st/2nd/3rd party", better made consoles, amazing online services, and so much more = Sony PLayStation 1994 - 2025 & beyond............if it was only nintendo that existed then gaming would have been so pure ultra boring today. so glad Sony came into console gaming to change it for the best

Those opening shots are scandalous. You wouldn't see real time rendering like that for about 8 years after the PlayStation came out. I'd have been extremely miffed if I'd bought one expecting to see that and instead getting 240p resolution, no texture filtering and wobbly surfaces everywhere. If a developer tried to pull that these days, they'd be taken to the cleaners. No one really knew any better in those days.
No you wouldnt because you would be coming from 2D 16bit games. You only think that way now because of hindsight. Also 240p on crt looks way different than 240p on your lcd monitor. Even 240 rez looked criap on crt back then.
@@quattro4468 I'm old enough to have actually played a PS1 at launch. The graphics in this demo are in a completely different league to what the PS1 hardware was capable of, and this was plainly clear even at the time whether you were coming from a Megadrive, Game boy or SGI workstation.
@@retromuel I've also seen a number those demos running on actual PlayStation, plus they show actual games running on the system to be fair. Some of it's clearly bullshit, but a lot of companies, even Sony are still guilty of that.

Motor Toon Grand Prix. The version shown here was never released outside Japan, so in the US the sequel was called the same thing, though in the Europe they still called the sequel Motor Toon Grand Prix 2. Both were direct predecessors to Gran Turismo, and the second game even had a mini game that included realistic racing cars, pretty much a tech demo of what was to come. It also included a tank combat game akin to Twisted Metal or Vigilante 8, and a Battleship game as well among other extras. It's amazing how much the dev team packed into a CDROM and you could feel the passion they had for the games throughout. Still holds a special place on my heart going on 3 decades later.
