I bought the scph-9002 model at an antique shop. It was in perfect condition and I was amazed by how it worked. It had a few scratches but it didn't really bother me. Conclusion: you could get awesome stuff at an antique shop. P.S it cost me 25 dollars.
PSOne Slim w/ LCD sceen for the win. Play it by itself, or on a television. Built like a tank, and hasn't failed me for the past 15 years. Only thing to be careful of is the AC Adaptor...be kind to it. If you have replace it they sell for $11 on Amazon. So many memories of chilling with my father and brother, blasting at each other in Crash Team Racing, swinging through cities in Spiderman, or getting into street fights in Jackie Chan Stuntmaster.
The date code on that PSone slim is 3D. That means it was made the 4th quarter of 2003. I currently own a 5501 from August 1997 and a 101 from September 2000
I Think I had the 5000 model but I was 5 or 6 and I didn't know the difference back then but I'm getting the PS One slim I miss playing my PS1 games on original hardware and getting the slim saves alot of space my setup is kinda cramped up so that's a great way for me to get my PS1 fix great video.

I have a 5501, made in September of 97, it has the more noticeable multi out and serial i/o pins and the date is written in plain text at the bottom left corner of the sticker. So, I guess Sony had slight variations in the different models through the years, then must have came out with a newer model every time there were large changes made.
Managed to snag a 1001 and a 9001 at a game sale. The casing on the 1001 is a bit broken though but should be fine as long as I don't mess with it. I also have a 7501 with a slightly finicky laser.
There is actually two PlayStation slim models. Besides the multiple PS2 slim models. The SCPH-101 is not the last model. The last model was SCPH-102 or even 103, 104, but I don't think they were officially released. My favorite model is the early revisions like 1001 and 1002 and so forth... :)

My original 7501 just failed with the analogue circuit losing power shortly after it's turned on so it only works with digital controllers. Had no video skip. Replaced it with a 5501 but that one has video skipping issues.
5500J, 7501x2 9000J and 9001 have but Lens position at 11 o'clock is not good due to the phenomenon that the lens sinks due to the heat of power trans.

Worst to best Worst: 1000 (worst quality of laser, video, and fvms) 5000 and 7000 (not much different, so i'll be talking of them next) (they have less fvm issues, but still have it, video and lasers problem remains, but the laser is stronger, also these models forward do not have separated rca cables connectors) 9000 (very similar to 7500, but without parrarel input) Best: 7500 (these models forward have better video and laser quality, as well as fully working fvms, also, the last models with pararrels i/o input, and (Japanese 3000 version is the international 1000 versions, and japanese 1000 versions are the same as 3000 japanese and 1000 international, but they have an s video output)
Extra info: 1000-5500 pal models has a different bios background, and slim model has a variant Also, all PAL versions except 1000 has icons in the power and open buttons, intead of words, as well as all slim models

The laser does not overheat the slides the laser assembly rides on were plastic. Over time the heat would warp the plastic slides and it would not sit level so it stop reading discs. The 1001 model has the RCA jacks to plug a light gun into to play light gun games. Important note you also need at CRT or (tube) tv to use a light gun though. The response time are milliseconds compared to a LCD tv.

The most likely reason that Sony did that was so you can tell the difference between the PAL and NTSC models because most people won't know that 0 and 1 are NTSC and 2, 3, and 4 are PAL.
so do all of these models use the same av cable? i just bought a ps1 scph-101 off ebay to replay some of my favorite childhood games and the seller included everything besides the AV cable and i'm having a hard time figuring out which AV cable to order
9000 series were produced around 1998-1999. You can always check Wikipedia and google in general but I am pretty sure. You could also open your console and check the plastic casing. There is a print of the year, month and week the casing was made. It can give you at least a general clue. PSXs are very easy to disassemble.
I am a huge ps1 fan, I always find myself going back to this console and playing childhood games such as re2 tomb raider mega man x4 thru 6 hogs of war ... the list can go on and on. When it comes to the fat model I like to buy and have the scph 9001 model , I think they are the most reliable. I still have it and it’s still kicking like a champ since 1999.
The 7501 and PSone are just as good as a 9001, plus the 7501 has a parallel port (not taken advantage of by official means, only cheat cartridges and, more recently, PSIO) and the PSone can use a portable LCD screen

I hava a SCPH-1001 dated (June, 1996) and a SCPH-7501 model dated (July,1998) as of yesterday. I will say I like the SCPH-1001 because that what I had as a kid and Resident Evil 1 was my first game. I like the 7501 alot because of already been mentioned in the video about the difference in sound and havng slight delays in games on the SCPH-1001,which I can say doesn't happen too much. I still just play my SCPH-1001 model just because that what i had on Playstation 1 launch day as a kid. I just ordered Resident Evil 1 about three days ago. I'm so excited! But the 7501 model is the best performance model! I really love the fact that the 1001 model and the 7501 model are the same color that being the Old Grey Color!
You give a video on the different variations, but underneath the hood there's nearly more hardware revisions than there are games, subtle differences, but differences none-the-less. I opened up two SCPH-1002 units and found the power supplies were noticeably different. Sony, and other console engineers aren't finished at launch, those hardware revisions just keep on rolling out, either to streamline manufacturing, reduce the cost, or increase the reliability, all while trying to maintain 100% compatibility. A top effort, really, especially when we've seen major components such as video and audio chips be substituted within the lifespan of a console. Also, it's not the PS1 Slim, it's the Psone, pronounced "P-sony", like P-Diddy, because P-names were fashionable at the time.
On the 100X model that RFU DC out plug was to supply power to a RF modulator, SONY had the same RCA jacks and DC plug with the exact same spacing on other AV equipment (Camcorders, etc) the RF modulator would fit all of them. Even the Nintendo Play Station prototype had those port spaced exactly like the PS1-100X
I was trying to remember which ps model i had when i was a kid and for sure i had the 7000 model cuz mine came with dualshock controllers plus i remember using gameshark which would plug in to the back via the parallel port for cheating in games thx for the video!!
Well it works better if you take one from a Slim Ps1 it works actually pretty good "although you'll have to take the plastic cover from both and swap them", it makes it a decent system.
The 1001/1002 has the best audio chip though. The lasers are at fault being close to the power supply, but it's easy to swap a new laser (KSM-440 transport, available for peanuts!) into one, and not too difficult to adjust the laser intensity, bias, and gain to keep one running a bit longer. The RCA jacks on the back are also useful for Namco G-Con owners, or those who want separate stereo audio. The same with many consoles and their revisions, especially those by Sony, the first one is always balls-to-the-wall, and subsequent revisions aim to lower the cost and/or improve reliability. I think the only console where the hardware improved noticeably during the lifespan of the console was the SNES with it's 1chip models.

Well the inners of the 9001 uses the same laser as a 7501, I've taken both models apart and it they're interchangable.

103 is for the Asian market, mostly hong kong and China

There is a 7001 model too. The SCPH-3000 and the SCPH-3500 were made. Both being Japanese only units.
I knew it, but they were never released outside of Japan.

I don't have the 5501 model anymore, a friend of mine was interested and I sold him that unit.

On the 100X model that RFU DC out plug was to supply power to a RF modulator, SONY had the same RCA jacks and DC plug with the exact same spacing on other AV equipment (Camcorders, etc) the RF modulator would fit all of them. Even the Nintendo Play Station prototype had those port spaced exactly like the PS1-100X

I was trying to remember which ps model i had when i was a kid and for sure i had the 7000 model cuz mine came with dualshock controllers plus i remember using gameshark which would plug in to the back via the parallel port for cheating in games thx for the video!!
The 1001 has the worst design because the laser is too close to the power supply and it cooks the laser overtime and it stops playing games
Well it works better if you take one from a Slim Ps1 it works actually pretty good "although you'll have to take the plastic cover from both and swap them", it makes it a decent system.
The 1001/1002 has the best audio chip though. The lasers are at fault being close to the power supply, but it's easy to swap a new laser (KSM-440 transport, available for peanuts!) into one, and not too difficult to adjust the laser intensity, bias, and gain to keep one running a bit longer. The RCA jacks on the back are also useful for Namco G-Con owners, or those who want separate stereo audio.
The same with many consoles and their revisions, especially those by Sony, the first one is always balls-to-the-wall, and subsequent revisions aim to lower the cost and/or improve reliability. I think the only console where the hardware improved noticeably during the lifespan of the console was the SNES with it's 1chip models.
