SNK started the memory card trend, with the Neo•Geo. Including a memory card slot, on both arcade, and home consoles. Back in 1991, I actually had an arcade operator yell at me, thinking I was trying to mess with their MVS, when inserting my memory card. He was cool once I explained what I was doing. And even threw in a bunch of free credits to watch me finish Magician Lord, by starting on the final level. I'd also plug my headphones into the MVS, when playing it. SNK was ahead of the game back then.

One upside to the memory card thing back when the console was first out was the ability to rent games and continue the same save file. I played through all of FF7 as a kid renting the game every weekend
Never thought memory card were a step back. Easy way to take saves to friends and swap data. So much more flexible than cart saves and not many games had those anyway. Nice to get rid of passwords.
Backups for the PS1 should also be possible with a Dex drive. The N64 also had the Dex drive and at a GameCube the SD card adapter was your friend when you could hard or soft mod the console. .. I am still interested in seeing such a memory card for these consoles.
I don’t believe PS1 memory cards were a step backwards because it had some advantages that the battery required devices didn’t have. •NES, SNES, N64 & GB/C games all have a time when the battery will run dry. Then your save files will be gone for good unless you back them up before hand using a 3rd party device. •The Saturn also required a battery for saving games “it often died faster than the others if you heavily used the console” and unfortunately because many of the games vary in size. You could fill it up with 10 games or 1 with Sim City 2000. When it came to the PS1’s memory card it didn’t use a battery to store your games. Most only take up 1 save block unless you wanted to use more save files for a game. Most notably SoTN. However Because there are a large quantity of good games for the ps1. 15 blocks of data definitely isn’t enough for 1 memory card. I can see the value in this card when looking for bugs in game translations before they are officially released. Also if you only want to deal with 1 memory card all together. But I think i’ll just stick to my memory cards until something goes bad in them. The Third party cards usually die faster though. At least the ones from back then.
The PS2 Slim mod that is needed, I can not find any information on what the mod is, or how to do it, could anyone tell me what the mod needed is or link a site or vid showing how to do it?
I don't consider memory cards a step backwards to have them in one place and epescailly not having to worry about saturns battery. I think a stepbackwards is having to manually transfer the saves over to a USB drive or having to rely on the cloud and in Sony's case having to pay for the cloud.
The other day I missed the new preorder batch by just a couple of hours... Now I might have to wait all the way until next year... I'm really sad... Especially cause I have an X-Station. Curious what the specs of the MemCardPro is compared to a PS1, very amused by the idea of the Memory card being many times more powerful than the console it is plugged into.
I still think that it is easier and faster to copy classic memory slots with the PlayStation 3 Memory Card Adapter (CECHZM1), since it is even possible to copy ps2 cards. But i love this device
I agree. It’s great; I bought mine a long time ago after the PS3 launch so I imagine the cost of getting a used one now is probably more than buying this new device.
@@GyroDragonaPlays Working with PS2 savegames is not as easy as with PS1. There is only one program that handles memory encryption correctly: ps3mca-tool. This looks like an amazing tool that is basically what I'd hoped those super compressed "100 memory cards in one!" devices from the 90's would be before I found out how unreliable they were. I do have a couple questions though. With the X-Station, is it possible to assign the same virtual memory card to multiple games? I'd love to have a single card for Suikoden 1 and 2 for example, or link in a card with various Konami games for when I get to that famous part of Metal Gear Solid. How does the X-Station react if I happen to buy two of these cards so I have one in each slot? Does it "play well" and create two virtual MCs linked to every game? For example, Megaman X4 only allows 3 saves per memory card, so if I want a complete set of save slots with both X and Zero plus their hidden code activated armors, I need two cards for it all.
For the Metal Grear Solid Easter egg, you could probably try to copy saves from other VMCs to a real one, then try and load them back onto the VMC for MGS itself. Not sure about multiple Memcard Pros, but I have an extra original Memory card when the need arises per game.

I find it interesting how this could be used to easily transfer saves created in an emulator, onto the Memcard pro and finally to an actual memory card (and vise versa)
How can I get my info off the memory card
This is the info I've been waiting for to make up my mind. Pre-order placed!
What is this hardware modification necessary to work on the PS2 slim?
I'm excited by the idea of moving my PSP or emulated PS1 saves to original hardware
Not gonna lie, you got me with your awesome Intro
Thank you!
This would be a must for Dreamcast with bleem games because each game saves takes the entire space in a memory card regardless of which bleem games you have.
I would like to know if it's possible to take a PSX emulator BeetlePSX save on retropie and convert it to a format that this card can read?
Yes, as long as it's the .mcd file it should work
@@nunyabusiness69 I found that just naming the save file .mcd and copying it to the correct folder with named code and region, worked perfectly! Thanks!
@@JustinCherriman awesome!! Game on!! Enjoy!
ive just preordered the gamecubes version of this
Are these any safer than those cheap multi-page memory cards, from the 90's? I used to manage a game store back then, and we had many angry PSX owners, who bought the Interact XL memory cards, only to have their saves all become corrupted.
[Valid query awaiting response.]
Hope this can get some level of compatibly with PSIO down the line, then i'm definitely getting one! Now we have memory cards with more power than the console they are in. Crazy times.
Is there a way for the X-Station to not use a game-specific VMU, but a manually selected VMU that contains mixed game saves instead? Reason being for those games that have certain features or easter eggs when saves from different games are present in the MC.
It looks like the naming is only to make the PS load that specific MC on a specific game, the saves you have in there shouldn't matter.
Aside from my awareness with MGS's psycho mantis segment reading your card along with Armored Core's file carryover to subsequent title, what titles are in your scope?
One upside to the memory card thing back when the console was first out was the ability to rent games and continue the same save file. I played through all of FF7 as a kid renting the game every weekend
Cannot wait to get both my memory cards the ps1 and gamecube I just hope they do one for the ps2 as well
Never thought memory card were a step back.
This needs to happen for the ps2
I Second this.
This guide / review was great. My PS1 memory card from 8BitMods just shipped. Excited!!
Thank you!
The PS2 Slim mod that is needed, I can not find any information on what the mod is, or how to do it, could anyone tell me what the mod needed is or link a site or vid showing how to do it?
I’m waiting on this as well along with the PS3 card reader mod. Why even mention it if there is no documentation?
This is basically a memory card for your memory (SD) card :D
I don't consider memory cards a step backwards to have them in one place and epescailly not having to worry about saturns battery. I think a stepbackwards is having to manually transfer the saves over to a USB drive or having to rely on the cloud and in Sony's case having to pay for the cloud.
The other day I missed the new preorder batch by just a couple of hours... Now I might have to wait all the way until next year... I'm really sad... Especially cause I have an X-Station. Got one of the first runs of it... And also on disc I've been playing FF7 and needing to delete a lot of Saves that I don't want to delete... Damnit!! I wish I had one of these so bad! I'd make an awesome video of it! I have so many memory cards!
I’m assuming this will work with the PS3 if you have the memory card adapter right?
if you make a Dreamcast version with a VMU screen and built in rechargeable battery and this thing will sell like hotcakes
Bob humble bragging about his high % SOTN
This video was so beautifully succinct and perfectly helpful! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Memory Card secured. Thanks Bob.
Definitely needed for dreamcast :)
FYI, on the newest firmware there is a text file with the name of the game inside the folder for each game while using an X-Station.
Did You Play Resident Evil 2
2:12 can't find instructions. Do I for real just solder two lengths of kynar between those three points and call it a day?
thank god a CE sign on the back, had panic attacks when picking it up at german zoll :)
Do you have a link to the mod necessary to get it working on PS2 Slim?
0:52 Sick intro bruh!
Good timing considering Tonyhax being talked about recently
I'm seriously go to look into getting one of these. Since 1999 I have used 1 memory card and for years I have been scared that it will soon die. It's the performance brand mega memory card and I know from experience that brand has a life span.
Dope describes my rhymes, making all you MCS cold drop like dimes. You know MCSC is back again, and battling me on the microphone is like committing a sin.

What About G-Darius?
how do you make a new VMC on memcard pro? i press the butons on the pad it says too but not working?
Still holding trends xbox series x mem cards
Curious what the specs of the MemCardPro is compared to a PS1, very amused by the idea of the Memory card being many times more powerful than the console it is plugged into.
Dual-core 240MHz MCU + 2k LE FPGA @ 25Mhz, 4MB Flash, 600KB RAM + 128x32 monochrome OLED display panel
Can the MemCard Pro be used on the PsOne slim model?
Yup!
Where do i find firmware updates for windows instead of apple? I just cant seem to find them.....
Was sold until you said it doesn't work on PS2 slim without moding. Why is that?
I still think that it is easier and faster to copy classic memory slots with the PlayStation 3 Memory Card Adapter (CECHZM1), since it is even possible to copy ps2 cards. But i love this device
I agree. It’s great; I bought mine a long time ago after the PS3 launch so I imagine the cost of getting a used one now is probably more than buying this new device.
How? I found the software for the PS1 cards but I can't find anything for managing the PS2 memory cards. I would love to know what to use.
@@GyroDragonaPlays Working with PS2 savegames is not as easy as with PS1. There is only one program that handles memory encryption correctly: ps3mca-tool.
This program is mainly used to install FCMB on PS2 Memory Cards.
Perhaps encryption is the main problem to be able to support ps2 in memcard pro. Sony long ago threatened those responsible for various programs that sought to bypass encryption.
@@GuaridaDelFenix Ya, that’s the only software I found as well, it’s command line only. The git repos were DCMAd for software relating to the PS2 memory cards. :
@@GyroDragonaPlays That is precisely why I said that it is not easy, the entire backup and restore process has to be done by command line.
Nice, now I finally will have a use for that 512mb micro sd card I have just hanging around.
Hahaha, exactly!
that is for a wii!
perfect for tonyhax
Alright this is amazing; when are we getting a PS2 one?
PS2 would be very handy for some homebrew without a USB
I’d buy one for ps2 tomorrow it would be a dream come true as I have 100s of games on hd via free mcboot
Hi, about PS1 Terraonion MODE I tried to swap disc like in the manual but nothing happened can u help me please ?
Sony spent decades trying to sell you proprietary memory, for various products, as a business model...
Actually, with the PS5's NVMe SSDs, I guess they're still doing this :(
But but but if I have a separate VMC for every game how will I get that awesome 4th wall breaking interaction Psycho Mantis in Metal Gear Solid?
Better than having to change out the batteries in cartridges while risking your save
Just pre-ordered mine from Castlemania today!
Hopefully we can get one for Gamecube, and Dreamcast and PS2.
Nice, how much did you pay?
I have music on my PS1 memory card how can I put it on USB drive
Still waiting for mine to be shipped, batch 1 order.
@@AceTrainerX3 ,
I've come to read that one doesn't want to place game saves on the MemCard Pro until you have first accessed it by the Xstation... If you have any insight to lend, how should I first "access" / task the MemCard prior to consolidating games saves from other cards and downloaded saves from online? --- In addition to my own/relatives'/guests' progress, I plan to have the gameFAQ's PS1 library of game saves on, possibly, a separate SDcard for insertion into the MemCard unless it's easy to create [folders] to organize groups of VMCs if not in a huge, single [alphabetical?] list.
Am also curious how two MemCards contents would be managed as well as be seen/identified and accessed via WiFi if I have two in use (a pair of Serial I/O system-linked PS1s).
Are the saves compatible with other PS1 save game formats? If not, are there tools available to convert the saves to other formats?
For example using them with emulators, transferring them to a PS3 or PSP or using the MemCard Pro to dump your PS1 BIOS
I would love to see something similar for the sega cd, saturn, 3do, jag memory track, although that jag memory track isn't super important
Can i store back up games on it?
ya why has nobody mentioned if it can do this
Una pregunta , puedo descargar savedatas de páginas como gamefaqs y con este dispositivo meterlo a la ps2 y ps3?
Does this work on the psx with a wireless controller? I recall the psx having memory bus issues
This reminds me of a modern version of the Dexdrive.
Ugh i still have that somewhere. But i probably cant connect that to anything.
This but as a VMU please
How to you get PSIO to auto boot mem saves?
Can’t wait to get one. I know they sold out already but I think they said they’re working on another batch as soon as the first ones are shipped.
Actually, the pre-orders just haven't re-opened yet :) You'll be able to get them later today when this goes live to the public.
@@Kensterrrrr I just ordered it! Thanks for the heads up! Appreciate it very much!
Quick question in regards to this device. You mentioned that there would need to be a hardware modification done in order for it to work on a PS2 Slim. What did you mean by that exactly and is there a detailed explanation about that? Thanks in advance, and this was a really insightful video! I missed the preorder window it looks like but hopefully I'll catch the next batch!
What an excellent video and product!
I've been waiting for this!!! Yuuuuuussss!!
They went up at 1:08, managed to score one plus an XStation. Hopefully the PS1Digital gets restocked soon too...
