You didn't screw it up Kurt. You actually played one of the most memorable covers ever.
he did screw it up on 3:14 He was aiming for the 8th fret, hit the 7th, then over compensated and hit the 9th then finally hit the 8th. But that screw up made the song better in my opinion. Crazy how screwing up can actually work out for the better.

He starts playing the best performance of the night and one of the 90's music most memorable moments.
I'd say his best performance on MTV was definitely Where Did You Sleep Last Night but this is a close second.
@@graph9927 It's very tough to choose between both songs, I've always liked "The Man Who Sold The World" more than "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?". I feel it's like Cobain saying goodbye.
It was one of the best songs of the set, I agree. I also like the Live and Loud version.
Kurt Cobain will never die !!!
He doubted his abilities for a slight second, but still pulled off a masterful performance.
Kurt is 1 of the only musicians to ever have gone through an entire MTV Unplugged in 1 take. Almost every other unplugged had to be edited and put together. He sat down and played the whole show in one shot. This is what he was capable of. RIP Kurt. We miss you
Really? I did not know that. It shows how good Kurt and the rest of Nirvana really were. I've always heard that they constantly rehearsed and practiced before doing live shows and it shows.

They're spitting and throwing things at his very expensive camera. There's another version I've seen which includes Narduar's entrance and more "respectful" behavior. Courtney apparently arranged the interview, I don't think the boys were on board. To be fair, Narduar takes shit from everyone. Still, having actually been around at this time, my memory of Kurt is not one of a respectful guy. More irreverent and borderline personality types of shit. Whatever you say, though. I really liked Nirvana back in the day, had all their studio records and a bunch of "bootleg" records. I'm not even mad that he was that way. I just would never characterize his behaviors as respectful. He was trying to shock you.

It was me! 😊
This song takes me nearly 30 years back in time when I lived in Syria and saw this on TV for the first time and was instantly hypnotized only to learn that he had just died. What a minor revelation about a stranger, in his prime, on the other side of the planet that instantly made my heart sink. That is, by far, my favorite among all of his songs because it evokes such a strange mixture of sad and sweet emotions.
Nirvana could've just performed their greatest hits for the MTV Unplugged like AIC did, but instead decided to pay tribute to other artists as well, and the final results were legendary masterpiece performances like this one. David Bowie himself even preferred this version as well.
I'm glad we got either performance. AiC's show was after Kurt's suicide, and they hadn't performed together in years. Layne clearly wasn't doing well. Opening with "Nutshell" definitely set the mood for it. I'm glad we have these shows to look back on, but I'd rather Kurt and Layne were still around. Maybe Kurt would've even appeared with Mad Season.

there was nothing quite like the creative froth of the late 80's and early 90's as the Reagan era came to a close and alternative rock came to the mainstream

This revolution in the digital economy promised much but seems to have been a false promise, and it truly has been the last big revolution in music since Nirvana and the emergence and recognition of hip hop after his death which was a long time coming.
the true next revolution may be in free sharing of music created and shared outside of it that allows for true genuine growth and experimentation

This is a REAL ETERNAL SONG!
Hi I recommend a song called 'The Bond Villain' By Robert Nix
Back in the summer 2003 I was 13 years old. I was living in a remote Russian region with no internet connection. I told my friend, that I had no music to listen to, every tape I had (yeah, tapes) had bored me and I needed something new. He said, I have Nirvana, that's my brother's tape, but I can give it to you.I said, yeah, "I heard about them". So he gave it to me. I listened to it couple of times, my favourite songs were SLTS, Rape me, About a girl, Polly, Where did you sleep last night and The man who sold the world. I was thinking, shit, that band is really cool. I didn't know, they were not out there anymore. Couple of days later I went through old Russian magazines from 90s, which my family stored in the attic. I found an article from the year 1996 - Two year without Kurt Cobain. I was like, what, wait a minute. I read the story about his suicide, I was shocked, went back to my room and turned on the record. That was the most intimate music experience of my whole life. I was lying on my bed listening to all these song and the minute the solo on The man who sold the world kicked in I started to cry. I didn't know English at that time, all I understood was the title, that gave up the idea of the song. Also I didn't know that it was "a David Bowie song" and that such an artist even exist (at that time and again - no internet, remote Russian region). Couple of years later I learned how to play this song and learned the lyrics (they were pretty much close to what I was expecting them to be). Either way - this is one of the greatest music performances of all time and I really enjoy to relive that moment from 2003 everytime when I listen to it

This unedited was much needed when it was broadcasted on TV channels. Huge number of people including me didn't know the last line.
"That was a David Bowie song" at the end just tells you everything about him
Crystal K Crystal K guess you could say that it means kurt was very grateful for the passed songs and artists of his generation and wasn’t afraid to let people know what his influences were and what music he enjoyed listening to...?
@Crystal K need to stay true
Miki Domeny that too.
@Crystal K that he does not take credit for it and he most likely thinks his version of it was trash compared to David Bowie's version, which tells you how humble Kurt was. Such a shame that Kurt had no idea how much he changed the world still to this day.
@@dirkdiggler2430 Why do you think him saying it was a David Bowie song suggests he thinks his version is trash.
He also said Jesus doesn't want me for a Sunbeam is a Vaselines song. Does that also suggest he thinks his rendition is trash in comparison?
Look, children. This is when the M in MTV actually meant something.

This song will never age and still sounds as good
I heard this as a rebellious teenager from Karachi, now I have a kid and still listen to this nostalgic piece of art. Timeless music.
This song is a straight masterpiece.
MENGO PORRA
I love how the Cello and Kurt's solo at the end feels like playing catch up with one another, like a lo-fi delay. It felt like "The Man" who seems immortal in the song is moving past history one after another and is indifferent.
I can listen to this on repeat for the rest of my life
Krist is so goofy I love it. I can relate as a fellow bassist who grew up playing along to his lines and this album (I got an acoustic bass just for jamming along).
Also Kurt didn't screw it up, he hit a home run with humility.
I have deep nostalgia for a world that will never exist again
Whatever has been, IS now, & will be again!
I have seen the same comment on other song.
probably it never existed
me too
I belive because anything can be posible and too much better
I still love the fact that he's sitting in an office swivel chair.
Unplugged, but not uncomfy lol

Que voz linda! Um gênio!
Man, I'm 70 years old but I miss Kurt. I can only imagine what kind of music he'd be playing today. I'm sure it wouldn't be pop-rock or dance music. This is a David Bowie song. You should listen to him doing it, too. Like Jim Morrison, Kurt is probably jamming with the rest of the greats up in heaven.
only that you didnt mention any "great musician"^^ its nice music, i listen to it sometimes to and enjoy it. but i mean i like it, if my children paint pictures for me and i hang them up. it doenst have to be ... hieronymus bosch, monet, van gogh or picasso all the time.
in this picture, kurt cobain, jim morrisson and david bowie are the children and for example hiromi uehara, art tatum, miles davis, franz liszt, paganini, beethoven, bach and friends are the picassos of course.
@@wurstfinger3289 Well "great musicians" is a subjective term and people like all kinds of different music. Some people don't like Bach. Doesn't mean he wasn't great. If somebody is really good at what they do I don't care what kind of music it is, I pay attention. Kurt was good at what he did. Musicians don't want to be categorized or stuck in a box of some kind, they want to be free to explore and experiment with new things. That's why I hate it when you're at a concert and some yahoo keeps yelling out for the band to do some old song. It's much more interesting to see where a band is going and what they're creating that's new. The only thing I find it hard to listen to is "dissonance" when the notes are not in harmony in any way. That's just noise. I like everything from "Iko Iko" by the Dixie Cups to "29 Palms" by Robert Plant.
@@johnallen2771 "Well "great musicians" is a subjective term" no.
"Some people don't like Bach. " i dont really like most of him. doesnt matter. i know what he did for the developement of music and which level of skill he had.
i mean calling kurt cobain or clapton skilled guitarrists is ... well i say "not proven".
" Kurt was good at what he did." yes.
"It's much more interesting to see where a band is going and what they're creating that's new." depends if there was a positive developement, go for it. but in cultural industrialized productions, this is a rarity.
"The only thing I find it hard to listen to is "dissonance" when the notes are not in harmony in any way. " thats somehting YOU dont like. go for your 3chordsongs your whole life. great musician of course reach for more. its not my problem if majorities stay in your nutshell the rest of their lifes^^
wont happen to me.
"That's just noise." its just something you will never get because of your habits.
@@wurstfinger3289 Like I said, I'm 70 years old and music is my main interest. During my life I have heard so many different kinds of music from all over the world. There was a time during the '50s when some jazz musicians were experimenting with dissonance. The sound was quite chaotic/confused and not really pleasing to the human ear except as a curiosity and it didn't last long. But you can listen to the most intricate jazz and it harmonizes in some fashion no matter how obtusely. So I know the difference between harmony and dissonance. Even in ancient Africa the natives made drums that harmonized. And what is "cultural industrialized productions"?
@@johnallen2771 cultural industry in very short means enlightment as instrument of massdesception.
culture in capitalistic societies has to follow the same dictation of capital, as the industrial production. most important is not the cultural aspect but the value-realization. its not about art, its about selling. so the product doesnt have to be cultural valuable, it has to be easy to consume, easy to understand. it has to have nothing challenging, nothing that could make the individual grow with it.
it has to be that easy, that after a day of 8-10 hours work, you can just relax and do nothing, while this music is played. actually, you dont even really need to listen. you can do anything else parallel to it. so its not challenging products, its degenerative products.
its a term not only usefull for music but also for movies, architecture, ... culture.
you can see it everywhere, if you take a closer look.
the theroy calls out 2 phases:
before that, in the liberal days, art was used for progressive, emancipative, critical action with some impact. it was mostly about resistance. its been about free art and stuff. now, in the late capitalism, the art is not free anymore, because "freedom" doenst necessarily express itself in getting money.
"free art" in the very most cases means poor artist. very poor artist.
nowadays, art lost a lot of its substance. "under my umbrella ella ella e e e" (rihanna) or eric claptons always the same and not very various guitar"licks" as an example.
he s not scofield, joscho stephan or david fiuzcinsky.
the impact, that this has on society: the autonomous individual will be replaced by a hetereonomous one. thats what we can see all over the world.
the "world of culture" becomes seperated in one very small part of real authentic arts and a big one, produced in an industrial way: mass production of easy things, no complex messages and so on.
means: the art doesnt communicate or interact with the individual anymore, because the individual is degraded to a consumer. the topics will be only ... easy stuff, superficialities.
cultural industry is massculture, as a weapon of assimilation.
its as adorno and horckheimer said: "culture today is infecting everything with sameness".
I've hit an age where I've returned to the music that meant the most to me and cannot stop listening. I can't believe how fortunate I am to have grown up with such talent, and how unfortunate we all are to have lost Layne, Kurt, Chris...
Exactly the same thing happens to me, sometimes I don't know whether to laugh and enjoy it, or cry.

He did actually mess up a note on the solo at 3:13 but who really cares, the cover is a damn masterpiece.

Best live performance of a song....ever. Sounds great. Voice was on point. I think that note was actually intentional. I honestly never thought it was a mess up until now. its one of the notes that gives me goosebumps.
This was the pinnacle of Kurt’s voice. It changed a little over time, physically and stylistically.. he woulda been a killer solo singer songwriter had he kept on.
2:43 🤷♂️

when he wasn't screaming his lower and softer tones sounded really nice
@@kiWi-zv8vr if he didn't scream he might of kept his voice he had alright technique on his clean tones but he did try to get help with vocals in 93 and went to a vocal coach who sent him a mixtape with vocal exercises such as scales with the ma and mo vowels and when kurt heard the mixtape he basically laughed at it and called it bs, the guy could have been a really good vocalist with some training the guy had such potential he was blessed with 4 octaves
He had a bit of country style voice tbh like rock and rolling country singer though it’s fantastic

Just speaks character to who Kurt was, right after he finished playing that beautiful and arguably one of the best covers, he’s says “That was a David Bowie song.” Kurt that is Nirvana’s song.
This man will not ever be forgotten. EVER
I was in high school when I learned of his death. I’ll never forget that day. I arrived at school to at least 100 students holding hands in a circle on the football field crying. I asked someone what was going on and they said Kurt Cobain was dead. I didn’t listen to grunge or most rock in those days but I definitely liked Nirvana. See in those days MTV actually played music videos, so you pretty much got exposed to a lot genres. Watching all those kids stand together having their own moment of silence in unity was very powerful. This cover reminds me of that time. Beautiful and Powerful. 😎
I was of school age too, and when I heard the news, I thought, what a tit and got on with the rest of my day!
David C that's great!
Son- why is my sister named Rose?
Dad- Because your mother loves roses.

This version is a million times better than the original version.
I was 10 years old when I heard on the radio Kurt died and ill never forget that day. It was pure shock and heartbreak. He was such a talented musician and I don't think he knew how much of an impact he made in so many of our lives. To this day, when I'm feeling a certain way, only a Nirvana song could match that feeling.
well said. I feel exactly the same way.
Same. I was 10. I still come back to this show every now and then.
Right. I’m sure at 10 you really understood the gravity of his death and how profound it was
I love reading the comments on well known stuff like this. It’s interesting how much and how differently music affects people. I for one can be in a certain mood where songs will have no effect on me. Other times they will have a massive impact on me. This is one of the times where this song and performance is having a huge affect on me
I always thought about this song being a story from the pov of Bowie. He has finally reached the height of his fame. After his performance, he walks backstage. He passes a figure in the shadows, one that he recognizes. It was that of a man whom he had heard rumors about in his circles in the depths of the music industry. The figure was a man who had reached the height of power and wealth. He made trillions off of the suffering and death of millions of people. He was the man who sold the world. Then, Bowie speaks with him. The song is about his brief, backstage, brush with a man so unbelievably powerful that no one even knows who he is.
