We have three of those mowers like that one. We change blades daily when they are running. Some times more often still when cutting bahia grass in the summer. There is no problem with lifting this mower by the deck like this. We use a cordless 19 volt impact to change them. One trick I also find for safety is make sure you are on level ground of course and DO NOT lock the parking brake because the mower needs to roll forward slightly as you raise it to keep it from being puled off of the jack.
ONE MORE SAFETY THOUGHT HERE: Under no circumstances do you want to try to reach under neath the mower to hold backup when using the impact. The blades will at times spin and it would be like the mower was running if you had your hand underneath it. It works incredible on a Scag especially though.
I took mine out from the bottom just now and for the life of me couldn't figure out why the muddle one would not thread back in. lol Thanks for the vid! I was making this ALOT harder than it is. I'm tired of paying folks to sharpen my blades as well. gonna try to teach myself how to do it...
My Bad Boy Outlaw has receiver hitches front and back. I used some heavy walled 2" square tubing to make a "lifting tool" that slides into the receiver hitch and ninety degrees straight down (actually leans back toward the mower so it is straight up and down when the jack is about half lift). The bottom of it is just high enough for the floor jack to slide under. Works great for a lifting point. I can also flip it up and use it to push with.
I have a Ferris Zero turn, and will be changing the blades for the first time. Should I leave the parking brake on ? and or chock the back wheels when jacking...or do the back wheels need to roll slightly to not damage the transmission ?
Not wanting to blow up your feed but this is one thing we do daily also. If you have a bolt on one of these Scag mowers that the nut gaulds on so that it won't come off, you can take a 18" wafer blade on a 4 1/2" side grinder and cut it off in a very short time and replace the bolt and you are back running. Where as if you have one that the threads mess up that threads from the bottom into the spindle, you have to change the whole spindle. This would require much longer down time and much more work to get it back running. We have had this happen twice on Scags over the years. They are incredible mowers for many reasons.
by any chance do u also know how too remove the mowing deck ? , And i was wondering, If i where too remove my mowing deck off of my ZD21 would i be able to attach it too the mid of my tractor as well?
Admittedly, I'm a rookie when it comes to zero turn maintenance. But, how often do you change blades under typical conditions? Being the new kid on the block, I've been cutting a lot of bahia grass....and sand. LOL!
Hi Jason, question brother. Is reinstalling the blades with the impact gun too much torque? Wouldn’t it cause damage to the threads/bolt/spindles? Thank you, love your channel 💯
I have this mower and will be changing the blades this weekend. Did you have to do anything to keep the blades from turning while loosening and tightening the nuts?
Looks like a cheetah 48". I was about to buy one. The Gravely 148 has the same engine. I settled for an Exmark 52" E series, which also had the same engine
Can you make a video for replace new belt tension spring and how to adjust thecspring? there was no one successfully present their detail video instruction on this topic even Bad boy company .
There's no need to put that kind of strain on the front of the deck and jam it up under the frame. The deck wasn't intended to be a lifting point. I use a piece of 1-1/2" square x 3/16" thick tubing with a rubber pad glued on each end to span between the two front forks. The rubber pad protects the paint. Then, jack the mower up the same as you did. Once it's raised, you can place your jackstands under the square tube for safety. This way, the deck is free to hang naturally and there is never a strain placed on the deck or the leveling mechanism, that might be able to twist it. Instead of the square tubing, you can substitute a 2x4 or two.
Richard Manzo Despite the robust construction of this machine and the Kubota that was mentioned...I still would not jack up any machine by an attachment. I cannot see that passing muster in the workplace, for certain. I am sorry Mr. Johnso, no disrespect intended to you but I believe that this approach is not safe and not a good idea.
That is exactly right Wade Johnson. I have a Tiger Cat 52" that was bought in 2014 that has around 900 hours on it and has been raised like that daily since it was bought and some days more than once and it has suffered NO damage. The Scag is not built of stamped metal and it hurts nothing to raise it that way.
You clearly have never seen a Skag up close. This mower cannot be damaged, nor harmed. Compared to the flimsy ass Deere junk they sell at Lowes, this is light years better than that. The deck alone on this mower weighs 1/2 of what the entire Deere mower does.....Try it.
I've been wanting to get an impact wrench and now have a reason to. Can I get by with a cheap 250 ft-lb model, or would I need something with more power?
I would get something a little more powerful. It is very frustrating when the impact wrench is not powerful enough and then you have to use a breaker bar to get the nut off
I use anti seize compound on spindle blade bolts, I had one seize up on me, I had to cut it off. We even used heat to try and loosen it, It won't budge I had to cut down on the sides of the nut and us a chisel to pry it off of the threads, it was that bad, some people go crazy using impact air tools. I use a breaker bar, because don't want to spend 3 hours trying get the nut off, I was lucky it was a outboard blade, I replaced all three bolts and nuts because they all looked like they were in rough shape on a low hour machine, that was on a 2006 Wildcat that was a home owner machine. Great mower best money I ever spent.
+Raymond Farwell thanks for sharing. Once I took mine to a mechanic who worked on big trucks. He used heat and a serious impact wrench to get the blade off
I tried that and it wouldn't budge and I didn't want to damage the bearing in the spindle housing. So I had to cut the nut off down the sides. I went to my dealer he was out of the bolts the same with two others. I got them on line.
Scags been having issues with blade bolts bending like butter because that spacer they have designed into the blade mounts it weakens the bolts all the Scag guys are bending them left and right across US according to all the post on LS, my buddy 30mins away just got one a new TT and it is doing the same thing.... Still a beast of a mower one of the top out there with Deere.Pretty much the top 2 all around overall condition cutters + stripers... being thick/wet/dew/rain whatever not much build up in decks the 7Iron does stay cleaner but Scags Vel decks are just right under them. Way it looks all the Gravely guys have dropped their fleets and gone to JD for the better 3/4 of the nation for some reason up north Scag or JD is not selling people are sticking to their exmark fleets in that thick nasty treated stuff double/triple cutting along with Gravely but the G's do it in all conditions pretty much you will see a unit here and there that actually cuts half up to par but that company is going down the drain fast rightfully so
Think Deere is fixing to release a small block diesel for the 900 Ztrak line hopefully this year it will be shown @ GIE it will be a 20-25hp range and one beast lol
Ok, nothing about the mower but right about the 4:25 mark I seen something crawling out from under your mower and over to the rock area. WHAT was that?? It is very light colored and creepy looking.
Lawn Care, do you have a video of changing the Hydro drive belt on a Scag? I've searched and can't find anything on youtube. Hopefully you can make one soon.
Can you take them off from the top on all ZT's? I have a Bobcat that I tried taking off from the bottom with an impact wrench, but they won't budge. Maybe the top will work. I was afraid that taking that nut off it would take the spindle off. Love your videos.
I'm not sure if you can take the blades off on the top of all the zero turns but I think you can on most and sometimes it is easier to loosen that nut from the top than turn the entire bolt from the bottom.
Great video and very proper. I however use a CORDLESS IMPACT WRENCH with the 15/16 in socket. You can do this at the jobsite on your trailer. Sometimes you hit a rock and have to change only one blade. This is very fast and efficient, and are not restricted to changing blades at your shop
Who said anything about recharging. I already knew that and have been doing this for years and continue to do it. My snap on 14 volt impact also takes up less space and will out do any craftsman 19 volt, and lasts longer. I also still have a GASOLINE powered AIR COMPRESSOR on my trailer for any air powered repairs on the mowers including sharpening. Also EXCELLENT for tires on the mower, the trailer and I have fixed customers tires ON SITE when they picked up a nail and had a flat.
Ten years ago I got lucky and bought a second hand Walker as my very first ride on, and it became my reference for "easy", and this isn't easy. On a Walker it's a matter of sliding two pins then flipping the deck up 90 degrees (one hand lift) and then the rest is done from the comfort of a garage stool. These are good machines except for this. This is way too much work for something as important as changing blades. It's just part of daily maintenance if you want to get a good cut.
I would never raise any mower by the deck, not good.. Scag mower blade bolts are the hardest to loosen that I have ever owned I hate when its time to sharpen the blades u need a torch get them off.

thanks for you input. A lot of good thoughts. Sounds like you are cutting a lot of grass. Bahia can be a real blade duller
What kind of blades do you use?
really love the fact that I can't see nothing you doing
classic
That means you can at least see something.
Go back to the dealership service center…your car is ready…
😂😂
It is possible to install the BLADES UPSIDE DOWN) please show the correct DIRECTION of the BLADES
ONE MORE SAFETY THOUGHT HERE: Under no circumstances do you want to try to reach under neath the mower to hold backup when using the impact. The blades will at times spin and it would be like the mower was running if you had your hand underneath it. It works incredible on a Scag especially though.
Is that lip of the deck a load bearing structure though? Maybe I'm seeing things but it looks like it's bending as you're jacking it up.
That’s the design. it’s an illusion.
These are the exact tools i have for this lol. Wasnt sure if i could lift from the deck. Thanks!
Do you feel it isn't necessary to use a torque wrench when done? I want to change the blades on my ZTR, and wondered if I had to purchase one.
tigergreg8 I don't use a torque wrench though you can. I use an impact gun and it tightens them up plenty
Having hard time removing the bolt and I’m using an electric impact wrench, one came off but the other two didn’t, can I get the some advice here
I have a tiger cat 2
Have a rider but it's not ztr. Are bolts on bottom reverse threaded or anything like that?
No
I took mine out from the bottom just now and for the life of me couldn't figure out why the muddle one would not thread back in. lol Thanks for the vid! I was making this ALOT harder than it is. I'm tired of paying folks to sharpen my blades as well. gonna try to teach myself how to do it...
Sharpening blades is not difficult. Maybe I will try to do a better video demonstrating
+Lawn Care Business That would be greatly appreciated, Sir!

Love it! Very happy

not if you're using an impact wrench. If you're using a torque wrench then you may have to hold it from the bottom
suggest using a 'C' clamp on the side of the deck on each side. This will keep the blade from turning...(don't forget to remove them...lol)
Looks like a cheetah 48". I was about to buy one. The Gravely 148 has the same engine. I settled for an Exmark 52" E series, which also had the same engine

Richard Manzo This is a Scag. It's not made from stamped steel. Lifting like this puts no strain on the mower. Read up on them.
Wade Johnson My Kobota is the same way. I lift it from the deck.

richharr that's the best idea so far
I do the same. Bit sketchy when you back off and the casters rotate but it works.
you dont need to make sure the blades arent spinning when loosening or tightening?
sirmart42 I don't have to when using an impact wrench. It just blasts them off
is that a freedom z?
I like how you hacked up the mower. Thank you
Ok, nothing about the mower but right about the 4:25 mark I seen something crawling out from under your mower and over to the rock area. WHAT was that?? It is very light colored and creepy looking.
I watched a man change the blades but he didn't show me how he did it.

I stood my zero turn up to get something that was wrapped around the blades and now it just clicks and won't start? what could that be do u know?
Can you not block the blades from underneath and take them off from the bottom?
yes, but on a scag it is also easy to take them off from the top of the deck
What model is that scag?
It is a tiger cub
No I mean like model number?
In scag liberty ,show how to get service to the blades please, thanks .have a good day.
+carlos rodriguez v. Sorry, I do not have that particular model so I am not familiar with it
Great video and very proper. I however use a CORDLESS IMPACT WRENCH with the 15/16 in socket. You can do this at the jobsite on your trailer. Sometimes you hit a rock and have to change only one blade. This is very fast and efficient, and are not restricted to changing blades at your shop
MrLmm001 That is a great suggestion.
The 19 volt Craftsman with the Lithium Battery will change many blades before you have to recharge it
Who said anything about recharging. I already knew that and have been doing this for years and continue to do it. My snap on 14 volt impact also takes up less space and will out do any craftsman 19 volt, and lasts longer. Also EXCELLENT for tires on the mower, the trailer and I have fixed customers tires ON SITE when they picked up a nail and had a flat.
Yeah I agree 100% with previous comment.
Wow! I wish my Husky did it this way.
Nice mower love it
Ten years ago I got lucky and bought a second hand Walker as my very first ride on, and it became my reference for "easy", and this isn't easy.
On a Walker it's a matter of sliding two pins then flipping the deck up 90 degrees (one hand lift) and then the rest is done from the comfort of a garage stool. The more I look at other ZTs the more I appreciate Walker as an inspired piece of design. Unfortunately I can't afford to buy one first hand.
You can get dirt and stones on your spindle shaft be careful with that and make sure you grease up when done
I'm going to pass on this routine I don't like the lifting of the deck like that we got thrown out of alignment or bend it
thanks
learn a lot bro thanks :)
Do you know how to change blades on a Encore 61" Front cut Prowler
I don't have any experience with that mower
That was a YOUNGER Jason C. 😢😮😅😊
I have the MoJack Pro for my Hustler Super Z. It's worth the money and I highly recommend it.
+231MasseyFerguson I have seen the mower Jacks though I have never owned one. Seems like a great invention
You're lifting it by the deck!? Uhh no thanks
🤔 because it's not the frame of the mower. It literally hangs and is not made to be the lifting point. Being a scag, I'm sure that deck is a thicker gauge, but that's not good practice. But hey, you do you.
I would never jack it by the deck
@TowME trailers good for you... I wouldn't, and the other guy says he wouldn't .
@TowME trailers and I have owned three of them
@TowME trailers no I don't make you tube videos . Not sure what that has to do with the price of tea but okay . I simply said I would not do it that way . I don't care if you do . Having a scag mower is not some huge deal , I personally dumped scag for Deere s and like them better
I have never seen a mower that you can loosen or tighten the blades from the top. My blades are held on by a bolt that can only be accessed from the bottom.
William Watson I have seen both. It sure is easy when you can loosen them from the top
That's because Skag mowers are the best ever built. Please don't think Home Depot or Lowes, this is a military grade piece of kit. The decks and frame alone weigh more than the entire flimsy ass mowers they sell at HD....
same here i run gravelys all bolt from bottom
Scag tiger cat?
keep in mind when you jack up the front end of your ztr Scag (if your gas tanks are full) you will leak gas out of the breather vents in the caps. Been there...done that...
jj
That Jack take forever
I have to see if I can remove the blades from my mower that easy. If so, I have been wasting time doing it the manual way which takes about an hour.
R they right handed or left handed Thread
joseph lingerfelt righty tighty, lefty loosey. I am not sure if that means right or left handed thread

Awesome video.."
"Look how easy this is!" Yes, I'll just run out and buy an air compressor and pneumatic impact wrench to change my mower blades. :/
I guess you may have to just use your bare hands
That only works on a Scag. This won't work on any other Z.
I think you are correct. Others you have to chance from underneath
All I could hear is a air leak. Check your tires for a nail.
You never jack a mower up by the deck and rest all the weight on it like that!

I would never raise any mower by the deck, not good.. Scag mower blade bolts are the hardest to loosen that I have ever owned I hate when its time to sharpen the blades u need a torch get them off.
