Use your impact wrench and you won't have to use a box wrench on top. BIG help!!! If you have a trailer, you can lower the ramp/gate and go up one side or the other, leaving one of the front wheels off the side of the gate. You can get right under the deck without using a jack.
Holy crap that is the hard way to do it. Drive a front tire up on a car ramp, Slide 3 ton jack under center front lip of the deck. Quickly jack it up. Grab impact gun with 15/16 socket and zip the blades right off. I can change a set of blades on a commercial zero turn in 2 minutes.
I took the rear roll bar off and attached it to a rectangle motorcycle lift table. Then attached a winch on the top of roll bar. Drive on table, lift table 4 ft off ground and then winch the deck up and use air line to impact gun.
A set of car ramps works very well and no danger of a 1200 lb. mower falling on you when you are cleaning the deck or changing blades. I paid about $30 for the composite ramps, they are stronger than the metal ones.
Thanks for your comments. I already have a pancake compressor 6 gallon 2 HP will it run a pneumatic impact gun for blade changes. If so, I will pick one up. I only need to change my blades about once every 2-3 weeks. I mow 5 acres a week. Please subscribe.
Posted former post before I saw what looks to be an electric impact. Why didn't you use it? I've been running mowers and doing all of the routine maintenance for over 40 yrs never torqued to a specific ft/lb and never had a problem.
That is a wide deck and I saw one thing which worried me and that is the car jack which has been known to let the load drop. I got a special jack from Harbor Freight which is easy to lift the mower by the wheels and much higher and is safer. They are making mowers cheaper today with plastic parts rather than metal ones. That is why I have to look at the equipment before buying it today. I have a John Deere z445 mower and love it when it is working fine.
There is no name on the jack, but it is one they had on sale at the time for $79.95, which was a $10.00 discount at the time I got it. It is the type which has a pedal on the cylinder to pump up the mower using your feet, and another pedal to lower it. It also comes with a bolt to place in a hole provided so if the cylinder fails while the mower is jacked up, it won't fall. I used it to lift my lawn tractor and it lifted the unit very high so I could do anything under there.
Sidney Mathious It's made by Hi-Lift. I have the Hi-Lift X-treme jack. I actually set mine in the yard and let the jack base dig in the ground slightly.
That is what I have to do also, though it isn't left there. i keep it under a shed when not in use. I recently used it on my Craftsman Lawn tractor to lift it up and replace a belt for a second time. This jack comes in handy for me and I don't think I do without it. It is an important tool for anyone.
What about round-holed blades? I can remove and install them with an impact tool but I can't torque them with a torque wrench. I'd need a pulley holder.
Another reason to use an impact wrench to loose/tighten the blades is to keep your friggin hands as far away from the blades as possible! I used to do it the way you show in the video, but last summer I had a mishap with the wrench on top of the deck popping loose as I was tightened the nut on the botton, and cut the back of my hand badly. Severed a tendon even. Now I use an impact wrench. I'll never do it manually again. Please don't make the mistake I made.
Good video I have a 2002 60 in master. In the 1950s bumper Jack. Never have your head above handle. At junk yard. Friend was jacking up car with bumper Jack. Started to lower with his head above Jack. Catch gave and Jack handle looked like machine gun it was moving so fast. Handle caught in under jaw. Right thru to teeth it was ugly. Big hole under chin and knocked teeth out. I'm 78 now never forget that. Floor jacks. Brother in law was going to lower large van. Bam Jack broke down it came. Lucky no parts of his body were under the van
I can't get my blade off that not you put the Box end starts coming off instead of the blade I don't want to tighten that top one too much cuz I'm afraid I'll break it and then I'll have to buy a new one
@jerome clements That guy is going to kill himself with that old ass Jack man. That thing is old as dirt. I haven’t seen one of these since I was 8 years old when my grandpa use to fix on his cars. 😂🤣😭
I just sit on the floor put one boot on the blade and with the breaker bar on the blade bolt and push the blade w my foot , breaks the blades loose w very little effort . Otherwise sometimes the spindle and the blade want to come off together
model number 74704 48" toro time cutter serial no. 260000001 The nuts are 3/4-16 SAE fine thread, and you use a 1 1/8" socket size to remove/install them. no lie.. i spent 4 hours on google trying to find the size of my nut (lol) and i finally found it on ebay a guy selling them.. thought id post this to help out the next guy. thanks.
also wouldnt it be easier to just drop the deck and work on it that way? most industrials you just pull 4 pins and drop the deck and pull mower off the deck..
You should title this "how to drop a zero turn on your head" or "how not to work on mower blades" ishook my head at the 1970 jack, then i saw your backup safety bucket. I called OSHA btw
Definitely not how you do this. You need to drop the deck down and remove it. Then flip it over to access the blades. No way in hell im getting under this thing with a plastic bucket holding it up. I’m surprised you are even using a torque wrench as many corners you cut
>doesn't chawk wheel >uses a bucket on one side rather than stands >jacks mower by deck rather than frame >uses tq wrench to loosen bolt rather than breaker bar or impact. Yeah. Not taking advice from this fool.

3:15 You should never use a torque wrench to loosen fasteners. Thanks 4 the vid.
The elephant In the room a breaker bar.. or an impact gun.. 😎
This technique worked great. Box wrench on the top while using the socket on the bottom was the key for me. Thanks for posting.

Mower is 900 lbs.
On that torch bar how high does it have to go did you say 100
Hi,
I did what you said for the blade removal. How do i remove the hex bolt on the pulley to replace the entire spindle assembly?
do you have a video on how to replace the spindles?
Thanks for your comments. I already have a pancake compressor 6 gallon 2 HP will it run a pneumatic impact gun for blade changes. If so, I will pick one up. I only need to change my blades about once every 2-3 weeks. I mow 5 acres a week. Please subscribe.
Are the blade bolts left-handed threaded or??????

How did you break the belt in the toro mower

I've always use a 2x4 underneath to leverage against the blade then used mu ratchet to remove. Is this ok or could this cause a problem? Thanks
Thats fine, I've been doing it that way for years. Sorry for the late reply. lol
Thanks for keeping it simple with basic tools....
A small compressor and impact are well worth the $ when it comes to this! You'll wonder why you didn't get them sooner. :-)
Good video thanks...How about on how to remove the blade belt?
What about round-holed blades? I can remove and install them with an impact tool but I can't torque them with a torque wrench. I'd need a pulley holder.
This video is very informative and straight-forward. Thanks for posting.

Wow, thanks for sharing that advice. I am new to doing stuff like this for myself and this is valuable information!
Look at the MoJack mower lifts. I have the Pro model and love it. Very good safe investment.
Looks like the front wheel spindles are bent back from hitting things in the yard. Mine do this on my finishing mower on my tractor.
Where you get the jack ? also an item number would be nice so look it up ...
Amazon, or your nearest farm supply store. Here's their website: www.hi-lift.com/hi-lift-jacks/x-treme.html
Jack stand looks like it's leaning, hope that's OK? Also, buckets can crack, I would never climb under that thing. Decent video, thanks for posting.
Bucket can crack, or the wheel could roll

Do you still have the lawn mower and just notice how old the video was
I can't get my blade off that not you put the Box end starts coming off instead of the blade I don't want to tighten that top one too much cuz I'm afraid I'll break it and then I'll have to buy a new one
I quit watching when the bumper jack appeared.
Not to mention the 5 gallon bucket under the front tire.

how often blades need to be sharp
+Saul Pineda everytime they get dull
Saul Pineda every other day
Great video. Probably out of my skill set, but still a good video.
cool ..i was wondering how to pick up my 1,200 lb ZTR O_o ..thing is built like a tank...
also wouldnt it be easier to just drop the deck and work on it that way? most industrials you just pull 4 pins and drop the deck and pull mower off the deck..
Not everyone has an impact tool, if you work with mowers chances are you have no portable impact on the job, so hand tools it is.
Harbor Freights got a regular Jack for this
You should title this "how to drop a zero turn on your head" or "how not to work on mower blades" ishook my head at the 1970 jack, then i saw your backup safety bucket. I called OSHA btw
should have used a mojac to raise the mower..a hell of a lot easier..
nice old bumper jack !!!
route 49&61 clarksdale
That what I do with my exmark 36 inch walk behind also good video its hopefully
u
+Nita Loving My Life your what do you mean ?
The video helped a great deal thank you.
Anyone that uses a torque wrench as a ratchet wrench to Loosen anything knows NOTHING about tools. You should not be showing anyone anything.
Thank you, that's very helpful
jesus - great bucket compression test ....call your lawyer and make sure when you are crushed you can blame it on somebody
Very Dangerous! Please don't try this at home...
thanks for posting - just subscribed and liked - again thanks for posting ;)

Why not drop the deck pull it out flip it over and use blocks of wood to hold the blades? A lot safer than doing it the way you did it.
Now the deck needs re leveled. Stupid.
Because it's heavy as hell and a struggle to get it back on!

I’d bet he knows how to spell chock though!
ROFFLOL. I luv it.
Sorry I has to stop watching this! No jacks and using a torque wrench to remove the bolt...YIKES GO BUY SOME DAMN JACK STANDS AND A REAL RATCHET!!
