  • The 2024 Low Rider S arrived early this year. One of several motorcycles that Harley-Davidson decided to ship out before the typical January model launch. The Low Rider S comes in a Billiard Gray as the new BASE color that now replaces the vivid black. The vivid black is still available but at a $350 premium as it is no longer the base color. The Low Rider S remains H-D's flagship performance cruiser and continues to be extremely popular since the 2016 model year when we first saw it. In 2022 the Low Rider S received part of the "Further Faster" upgrades which remain some of the highlights in the 2024 model years as well. Things like the 117 CI Milwaukee-Eight engine, taller rear shocks, race inspired gauges, etc. Matt and Nick of Laidlaw's H-D go into all the details on the 2024 Low Rider S.

    I personally think this is a bad move. If vivid black was standard and was sold at lesser price and any other color was premium then the truth is out. There is no extra cost for any color for Harley. it’s a scam.

      But it’s not just Harley. Other companies do that. Tesla base color was once black, then white, now it’s grey right now.

      @@darrianlasarte7498 the point is it doesn’t look like the expiring years justification that other colors had more special efforts for the premium charged over the years was a joke. it’s the same cost. Tesla has reduced price of its car over the years - did Harley do that.

    • @Gigitheefrenchie
      @Gigitheefrenchie 5 місяців тому +3

      It is an extra cost because they have to stock those paints at an extra cost rather than use them. Also, when you buy in bulk, like you would if a color was the "standard" then you get a discount, which get passed in the form of no up charge.

    • @cisa1622
      @cisa1622 5 місяців тому

      @@Gigitheefrenchie Bro . I think you relating a wholesale purchase by an individual with a business that ran 120 years. these are contracts more likely at a price of providing the paint( and these are not mini contracts). Harley has to speak about it more than Matt or Nick assuming things. I can only think the quality control argument on black color by Nick is naive.

      @@fazer2747 In my 45 years of riding I’ve never owned a sport bike. The only one I’ve ridden was Kawi 900 Ninja. Crazy fun ride but with my short arms but a ton of stress on my back, arms and shoulders. I’ve own other Harley’s (Sportster ‘72, Streetbob, 883 Iron). But over time I found forward controls added stress to my back/butt and they ultimately lacked power. The middle controls, pull back handlebars (added) and power of the 117 has been a perfect fit for me.

    I never thought I'd own an H-D until recently. I was looking for a street oriented motorcycle and a friend told me to ride a Sportster. I bought a nice 2007 Sportster Low a few weeks ago. Now, I'm looking at Softails. I think I'm addicted. Now, if H-D would make a small offroad/ADV bike around 700-800cc...
    I passed on a heavily discounted Destroyer Gray Dodge Challenger 392 Shaker in late 2019. It looks to be a similar color as this base color for H-D. We jokingly refer to it as "gloss primer". I'm not a fan. I ended up buying a white Challenger 392 T/A. The black and white contrast is awesome. H-D needs more white bikes.

      I waited until I was 62 years old and bought my 1st one - a '23 fat bob. However, in 2011, I bought my 1st cruiser an '06 Victory Vegas and I added a new '12 Cross Country to do some longer 2-up touring. I used to call them my anti-Harleys.
      Now, my FB is my only cruiser amongst my current stable of 12 in different segments. (I've had about 30 in 42 years of riding.)

    Great video Matt and Nick - very much looking forward to your coverage of the rest of the 2024 lineup. One question - why doesn’t Harley upgrade the tach/speedo on the Low Rider ST to match the one on the S? The low rider s is definitely on my list, but I also I kind of prefer the Mad Max/wasteland look of the fat bob, especially that headlight. However, I'm one of those who can't wrap my head around the smaller 3.5 gal tank, having spent most of my time on an '06 Sportster with 4.5 gals. It may not be a big deal to someone who just rides in the city, or when riding in areas like the Ozarks or Black Hills where speed and wind aren't a factor and your mileage actually increases, but in Kansas when you start adding some bags and the constant wind, you won't come close to the stated fuel economy. It's about having that piece of mind that when you hit 100 miles you're not worried if you can make it another 30 to the next town. Probably one of the biggest reasons why I bought a GS for touring. I'm not saying I NEED 5 gals, but hey at least give me 4. Maybe I just need more convincing. You should do a video and see just how far can you go on 3.5 gals under different conditions.

    • @MattLaidlaw

      You can read my full post 👆, but basically, without even trying, I can get 150 miles to a tank on my fat bob, after breaking in it.
      I live and ride in remote areas and I love my Italians and some of those sucker's low-level light come on around 100 miles. IF you ride them like THEY want to be ridden. Plus, the music they make at higher RPMs with especially with a pipe, is addictive. Ducs, Aprilia and MV Agustas are my reference points. I have to ride a distance to find the 'proper' roads.

I like having this option. It’s time for a change. I bought a black Low Rider S in ‘22. I liked it, but I do believe I should have waited for the ST which came out a month or so later after I bought the S. I wound up trading my S for a Pan Am. I also have a BMW bike that has the clam shell bags, just don’t care for them. I think the touring style bags are awesome, Harley hit it outa the ball park with those. I know there are other options now with advent black making a bracket for touring bags, however I feel touring bags just look way to big on the softail models. Was really hoping Harley would’ve addressed this issue, I feel there have been many complaints per say towards the bags. Either change the exhaust so they can use the larger one with a top opening or just use the smaller one with a top opening and keep the dual stacked exhaust which I really like. Not sure how many there are to wish chrome would be back, I don’t understand why they cant just make it an option at least, custom order only if need be?

    Hey Matt I've got a quick question that you have probably never heard before. The Low Rider S is the right bike for me, but I absolutely LOVE the smaller look of the Street Bob. From the saddle just being able to see the engine poking out the sides & is magical to me & I love the simple single center mounted fuel cap. I just runaround town in Las Vegas so I don't need big range. Could a Street Bob tank fit on a Low Rider S? Thank you & after I get my bike you can use it anytime you want when you Visit Las Vegas.

      Hi 👋🏼. I’m not sure there is a question I haven’t heard before when it comes to HD. Yes you can do that! It’s costly though. With the price of the painted tank and professionally installed, be prepared to spend 4,000-5,000 to do that modification. I appreciate the offer as well. Good luck on the bike.

    Curious to know the age demographic that’s purchasing the Lowrider S & ST? I’m also curious about your comment @mattlaidlaw about the Softail chassis having a better stock suspension than the touring chassis. If so, why do we see so few Heritage Softail on the road doing long hauls? I feel like literally every Harley I see on the Hwy is a SG or RG. Some RK’s. Seems like the Heritage would be a good touring option without a touring chassis, no?

    Even though I have an iron 1200 I can say the 3.3 gallon tank is plently. I commute 120 miles round trip three days a week and run 70mph for 110 of those miles. I average 2.5 gallons of gas everyday I commute on my bike. The street bob will do just fine. Even when I had a touring bike, I would go 100 miles, stop, stretch, piss, and fill up. I know not everyone will do the same.

    How does the Indian Sport Chief compare?

    • @TH3G0ODGUY
      @TH3G0ODGUY 5 місяців тому

      Not favorably in most categories. Its heavier (despite a 4 gallon tank vs 5 for the Low Rider), makes less power, has less suspension travel, less lean angle, and is going to have much less P&A available, especially in the aftermarket.
      It seems to be roughly the same price, I can't find on Indian's website what the charge for frieght is or what their surcharge is (if they still have one). But its 20k MSRP with ABS standard, so thats basically the same or slightly more than a 2023 model Low Rider S.
      The Indian does have ride modes, but without electronic suspension I find that basically just means that you have a rain mode. Which is nice, but hardly worth taking the hit in all the other categories.

    That gray is probably a lot more paint-swirl friendly than the black. I'm afraid to lay a finger on my dusty black 2023 for fear of swirl marks. Gonna wait until Spring and rinse and wash and ceramic coat the thing before any more riding. Swirl marks suck! Is my 2023 black model worth more now? Realistically, there is really no that much paint on the bike...2 fender, a tank and a bikini front.

      A lighter color like this grey, and especially ones with some pearl, hold up much better than black. HD's paint does have lots of clear on it though, so an afternoon with a rubbing compound can easily bring back a bike. But with Black, the second you look at it wrong again it will be swirled haha!

    I'M hoping Harley will come out with a flat Grey and name it BATTLESHIP GREY . ALL the dudes in my area were a lil disappointed with the GUNSHIP GREY being so glossy. If harley is goin to do military named paints they gotta keep it the flat military colors. All the service men and people who respect our military will live those flat military colors. For instance I bought a IRON 883 just cus the DEADWOOD GREEN was close to an O.D. GREEN . Now iF it were that FLAT O.D. GREEN it would've been spot on . There is a large demand for those military colors. It'll help with sales most definitely, harley should either try it or ask the community. THERES ALOT OF FANS OF THE FLAT MILITARY COLORS. THE MARINE COLORS IS ANOTHER COLOR THAT NEVER GETS ANY RECOGNITION WHAT SO EVER, PERIODE . IT BE A WIN . COME ON HARLEY GIVE US WHAT WE WANT FOR ONCE , LISTEN TO YOUR CLIENTEL. • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  5 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for the comment. I think "Club Bike" gets thrown around too often. So I guess it depends on your definition of "Club Bike". The origin actually comes from the actual club riders who mostly rode FXRs and Dynas. Then added things like the Quarter fairings, taller rear shocks, leather pro bags, etc. So in this context some may argue a bagger will never be more "Club Style" than a Low Rider S. I agree in a sense that a lot of guys with the same style and frame of mind (who sometimes do ride serious miles in a club) get the road glide and so by a different definition you can be 100% on the money.

Jes' no valuable reason ton increase a price of a bike without any really value more ( considering in EU all models are stock with ABS so low riderS got since the debut.
