Just got my 18 si sedan a week ago. Just wanted a manual sedan to daily. Honestly for 200hp this car is a ton of fun, gets attention (surprising to me) and haven’t filled the car up yet with semi aggressive driving. Well worth it.
I think it would be cool if Honda stuffed the 2.0L turbo charged 4 cylinder engine that's in the all-new Accord, into the Civic si! That engine makes 254 hp if I'm not mistaken.

Hi Alex, nice video! I just bought the Si a week ago, having talked myself down from wanting the Type R, and I have no regrets. I upgraded from a 2012 Civic EX so to me the Si has considerable more punch, way better handling, and i find myself staring at it in my driveway through the windows in my house hehe. Best car review I've ever seen. It's hard to believe that your other car reviews would be as good as this one. It almost seems like you're a Civic fan and that's how you know all this stuff so well, but you must really just be a car fan in general, so you know about how many different cars work.
In Canada they actually base the Si package off of the Touring trims so we actually get full LED headlights, navigation and heated rear seats in the sedan.
For anyone looking at the Si. I went with a black coupe and the roof line reminds me vaguely of the new NSX. The fuel economy is amazing. I've been pushing it a bit more than usual this week and I'm still at 36 mpg. One thing I've noticed as I've driven it ~2500 miles now is, although it's a turbo and the power dips after 5500rpm, it's an eager revver and really moves! It'll put you in your seat and before you know it, your accelerating hard past 80mph and it still wants to keep going. It's a really fun car and the handling is very good, I think it would be right with my Audi S4 on the mountain roads near my house. I'm loving this car.
people in cali are so lucky. not only do cars cost less because its in the US, but they also dont need to worry about rust OR winter tires. id be driving around in a dream car if i lived there lol
I just bought a used 17 Civic Si from a friend for a very reasonable price that I couldn't refuse. It's a very nice handling car with a decent amount of road noise but leaps and bounds better than my outgoing car. The Si does have way better seats than the Civic Sport or LX. Si is a great car I just would never buy any car new because of the horrible dealer experience, this one just fell into my lap. Gonna be A LOT of fun!
The standard in this class. The Si Coupe is definitely the best looking version. However, if roads are not good in your area, this may get real tired to drive real fast. Great review as usual, Alex
Do we know how this particular engine (as opposed to the 1.5T in the Sport) responds to a tune? Of course I'd like the 2.0T, but I think for this type of car the 1.5 is still a great option given its light weight.
Gabriel Fuoco do we know how much power they add? I'd love to see some dyno comparisons between the two (though I'm not sure what kind of internal differences there are between the two engines).
Alan Bowers 27hp and 40 lbs torque from hondata plus 6 psi Tune. They have a plus 9 psi that g ives it more power but the clutch can't hold it. Not sure about Ktuner. Results

I do not think the si should ever have an automatic transmission. Every single si in history has had a manual transmission, and Honda needs to continue that historic legacy.
I bought the Si 4 door in September '17. Totally in love with it. Love the engine. I get over 40 mpg on highway trips. Living in Minnesota I had to buy snow tires in place of the summer tires. My previous favorite car was my '84CRX, the Si may soon be my favorite. I would like a spare tire.
Good review - a shame there is no Si hatchback, some buyers would like the "20%" extra fun. The look of the Sport is great and has good practicality, prefer the look more than the Type R.
Si- with around 2000$ will push 400hp. Ktuner or hondata your preference. Cai , exhaust , e85 , tune , etc. Absolutely incredible machine. I’ve had 3 different si. The 8 th 9th and now xgen.... love them all.
Great video! I am really thinking about getting this car, it is nice to have a great review, and I also love the different camera angles you have while driving the vehicle, almost makes me feel as if I am in the driver's seat!
Talking about slicing the pie into slivers... The new Accord Sport is out with a slick 6 spd, all new infotainment, more room and practicality for around 26k. Honda has at least 6 cars I would be happy with now. It is quite a turnaround for a brand I would not have looked at 2 years ago. I wonder what Acura will do to become relevant now?
Great car - even better review. Very good thoughts and a thorough review without being boring, droning or spending too much time on dumb stuff. I'm subscribing. I'm trying to think through getting an si or the EX-T. I think resale value will go with the si, and the better seats matter a lot to me.
As usual, Alex brings up some excellent points. Personally, I'm a hatchback fan, but I also like fun and performance. So I'm torn between the Sport hatch and the Si sedan. The Type-R is cool and all, but it's overkill for me personally. I'm not fond of the boy racer looks, and I don't need such a high level of performance. I want my Civic to be fun and fast, but also my daily driver. (For better or worse, my boy racer days are behind me now.) If Honda made a hatchback version of the Si, that's what I would buy. Sadly, that's not an option. And as good as the Sport hatch is, as a perfectionist, I know I'd keep thinking about that 15-20% that I would be missing (even if I couldn't feel it) if I bought the Sport. Is 20% extra performance worth $2000 extra dollars? That's a tough question, especially since I prefer a hatch to a sedan (or coupe).
@Michael Bailey I ended up going with a used Toyota instead. It's slower but more reliable. While I like speed, I don't like tickets. So I subscribe to the "it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than to drive a fast car slow" school of thought. For the cars you've got, they need to be run on a track to really stretch their legs and have fun. Everyone's different, but I only have one car which must also be my daily driver, so Toyota reliability (and, likewise, naturally-aspirated engines) are my choice. You've got two very cool (and very fast) cars though. Enjoy them! But be careful not to get too many speeding tickets!
really an excellent review.. So many others take cheap shots at the Si, but Alex breaks it down so completely.. Really puts Si in the back of the Civic lineup. I've sat in the Type R a few months ago and it has excellent seats.. However the Type R styling is for a very specific person... you know who you are!
Exactly!!! See this car is faster than the last Si. I own BOTH! And this 10th gen pulls like a beast between 1500-5k! But it doesn’t fall off past 5k it just doesn’t feel like it’s making power. I think it’s dumb to compare of sport hatch haha. Seriously it is nice though
Damn, nice review! I was looking at the hatch before getting the Si. Love the way hatch looks but the thing that sold me on the Si was the Sport Mode features and minor turbo differences to enhance the driving experience. Now instead of buying non oem Honda struts in the future i have to buy oem honda struts where the price of one equals the price of four aftermarket struts. Price for performance, there is no such thing as the perfect car. But i love my Si.
Agree completely with your conclusions. I have a loaded 2015 GTI and when the lease is up in the spring, I will probably get another one. I was hoping for a more upscale SI. Like you said, a dual clutch transmission, LED headlights, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, etc. However, I think Honda thinks that might move into Acura territory. For me, the type R is too impractical. I live in the North East and travel regionally. The tires on that car as is would wear out in several months, and the rims would probably be bent in the same amount of time as well. I actually like how it looks, but it’s a second car and I already have another vehicle.
There's a hidden cost of the type R that'll potentially hit you by surprise is the tires. Those wear much faster and are much more expensive. Of course for the fun factor it totally worth it.
Alex on autos God forbid dude nobody wants a DCT transmission in the SI that car has always been manual transmission and that's the whole point of that car! With a limited slip differential with a 6-speed bottom line NO EXCEPTIONS dude NONE
Where I live, the insurance can be the most expensive part of a car ownership, and there is a huge difference in cost among different types of cars (e.g. coupe vs. sedan). Cars that apparently get involved in more crashes cost way more to insure. For example, FR-S. I think Civic Si becoming less of a "go-to" car for young & immature drivers may help lower the insurance cost, yet it has enough power for some fun, and I really do appreciate the LSD (very rare these days). Obviously, the sedan version will have lower insurance cost.
Just got the SI coup and was sad to find the insurance on the coup is crazy high for a little rice bucket. It’s even higher than my Corvette or Gen 2 Raptor,,,,,,why?
I definitely would go for the Si. Im a diehard manual transmission enthusiast. Also you cannot get a manual Civic Sport with Apple Carplay/Android Auto. For me, that's a deal breaker.
the performance numbers look the same as the 8th and ninth gen but handling is quite better with the larger tires and upgraded adjustable dampers and better brakes
A good a thorough review. The debate between the Sport Manual and the Si is a good one! My son has the Sport Manual and I have an Si Coupe (both 2018). The performance is pretty close, but I chose the Si for a few reasons: 1. Sunroof, 2. Limited slip diff, 3. Apple CarPlay, and 4.) I have a 2004 Pilot for my utility needs.
If I was going to get a Civic I'd get the Si. I think I'll just stick with my 2016, 3.5 liter Accord coupe with 6 speed manual. I really like it, but it does have some torque steer.
Great review, I will definitely look into the Honda Civic , will see which is more suitable , either the Honda sport or si, I used to own a Honda Civic sedan many years ago, great car with the 6 gear manual. The short coming I heard on civic was that it is a hot commodity amongst the car thievery .
I have a '17 Si Sedan. I was originally in the market for an EX-T 6MT and test drove a white/black interior. The only other two available in my county were a black/black and white/ivory. Unfortunately the white/black interior EX-T was sold the day after I test drove it so I opted for the Si (white exterior/black interior).
Just test drove a civic si today. Definitely could use a few more tweaks (e.g. knobs) to help define itself. Missing pass throughs in the seats, that sedan rear bumper, pedal placement...
Excellent take on the DCT from the ILX/TLX with the SI engine. Also with the R available, the SI seems like an afterthought. The Sport Touring seems like a better buy given the minor difference and price difference.
I don't know about the states, but typically an "Si with the DCT" is one of the reasons that Acura sells the ILX. I don't know about the US market, but In canada, Before the ILX, we had the CSX, and the EL. The whole point of those cars were "The sport of an Si, but more livable with a daily basis". They offered the auto as an option, leather seating, but other than that they were basically an Si. Building an Si with a turbo would pretty much make the ILX model obsolete.
nice job Alex! Love watching these vids. The tenth gen Civic has been the best selling car in the US, because it's such a great platform. I have a Type R myself, great hatch (with a couple of things that need to be fixed under warranty)
Okay I subscribed to your channel Alex,I like how you explain not only to the ordinary non-car person but to us crazy car people that like the specs of the vehicle the weight ect, it looks like you do a lot of your filming maybe in the Bay Area? I live just south of Sacramento.
Over a year and a half later dealers are still marking up Civic Type R's. The best deal I found was in SoCal. It's a 2019 at MSRP plus $2700 of accessories that were overpriced by a few hundred dollars. So I said I'll take it.
I have a civic sort manual - my brother just got the SI sedan 2018 - I like the SI way better it has way more torque and acceleration and handles better so I disagree with you but great video great work !
You perfectly sum up my thoughts on the Si. The Si is fun but why spend a bunch more money over the Sport. If I spend that much I already have to sell my s2000 and my 8th gen Si and I could stretch for the type R if they come down. The one Caveat is that I am super skinny and think that the normal civic seats are very meh to unsupportive.
I dont know the interior feature differences, but the bump in power, limited slip diff and active dampers seem like a decent start to justify the $3k price difference. If interior changes are present that people like, it would make an even better case in my opinion.
The interior is the reason to get the Si over the Sport. You get the digital dash, the upgraded seats, a sunroof, and an upgraded sound system. The question is are you going to get an itch to mod it from stock. Thats where you are just better off getting the sport.
I'm a big-time Honda fan I have owned many different Honda 8th, 9th & 10th gen Civic SI the only problem I have with the turbo is once the turbo gets heat soaked it takes a while for it to cool off & do a good fast run again.. the K20 motor had no torque wheel hop couple lil probs.. the K24 was much better & consistent. I have had all of my car's tuned with hondata which helps out a lot I'm not going to lie. I think the newest Civic obviously has the most features & probably the nicest interior but I did really like the K24 motor in the 9th gen SI.
17 lbs isn't going to do alot for changing the weight balance. I'm not crazy about the exhaust note nor how it looks. HDMI ports are for data not gas outlets. They should bump up the power to mid 200s. PS best detailed review of the coupe I have run across for daily driving.
My wife's car is a 2013 Accord EX that has the 2.4L EarthDreams motor and the CVT. Honda's CVT has to be among the best of the CVTs on the market, and, driven sedately, it will have you thinking it is a conventional automatic. Mat the throttle, and then it behaves like any other CVT. Sure, it will go 0-60 repeatedly in the same amount of time, but it is really not very enjoyable doing it. Alex, you fixate on CVTs, DCTs and the ubiquitous ZF 8 speed auto giving the fastest 0-60 times. What you are discounting is the enjoyment and involvement a manual transmission gives to a driver. Honda's manual transmissions are tremendous for shift feel and easy of use; they are among the best on the market. Call me a dinosaur: Bravo to Honda for making the Si manual only, and if I were to get a Civic Sport, it would have the 6 speed manual.
Let's face it, any which way you cut it, most drivers do not push their cars to the limits out on city streets as it is. So in many ways what does handling really mean? Absolute grip, again out in the real world, or perhaps steering response which adds greatly to driving satisfaction? Both? I suggest you take one for a spin and decide for yourself. Honda has been inching up into RWD handling territory for some time with its FWD sport models. If times around a track are your gauge take a look at what they've been able to achieve. Look down the page here for what the Type R has achieved, lightly modified, but look at the heady equipment it was quicker than! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_N%C3%BCrburgring_Nordschleife_lap_times
As a diehard Miata fan, and as someone who went from a modified NB Miata to a mostly stock EX-T sedan, I don't find this too hard to believe. It's amazing how well these new (non-Si) Civics handle, and I'm sure the Si is even better.
You'd be surprised if you drove an Si. Driven both cars, i can say that the 2016 honda civic Si and the 2016 MX-5 are neck-n-neck. Going to track events, i see these two cars within seconds of each other. Getting the chance to take both on a test drive in Mt. Shasta, both cars are truly the top of their tiers. Despite of the honda being fwd, It handles like a dream. Knowing the 2018 having independent suspension; that could only mean a better ride and handling performance overall compared to the older generation.
Idk if alot changed between 2018 and 2019 but the options list for the 19 civic si is like 2 pages long including the hfp package that offers coilovers with a 1inch drop and you will likely never find a type r at msrp not even close. They tend to put every option on them at the dealership bringing them up to the high 40k to low 50k. Just food for thought $1200 in bolt ons and a retune and you will be in the 300hp range and still have only spent 25k
The Coupe is the prettiest, especially at the back. They are nice, even the hatch.
The new Si should have been 230hp...50 more than the Sport and 75 less than the Type R. That would have better separated the three models, while still leaving the R clearly on top.
Rob D I agree. The hondata tune will put it at that power level
At 234HP the coupe would have same power:weight as a WRX. Stinks you'd need the reflash for that.
MrCthur its 650 for the hondata flashpro unit or you can just get the ecu flash at a shop for 350
MrCthur I agree though it should come like that from the factory

I bought the Si 4 door in September '17. Totally in love with it. Love the engine. I get over 40 mpg on highway trips. Living in Minnesota I had to buy snow tires in place of the summer tires. My previous favorite car was my '84CRX, the Si may soon be my favorite. I would like a spare tire.
I feel like Honda stays true to the manual for one very good reason, they are much more fun to drive.
This bad boy moves for sure. I have a regular civic 2012 n i love it!
It'll be too much pressure on the engine . and wont last
Great explanation of the different kinds of Honda Civics out there now. Thanks, Alex. Very informative and well presented.
That's one hell of an in-depth review! New subscriber👍👍
Great video Alex, thanks a bunch for this indepth review, truly the best Honda Civic Si review on UA-cam.
Man, this green color is worth any minor differences between this and a Type R. I'm in love.
Mines fast enough to get 2 speeding tickets! lol time to slow down for me.
Patrick Combs I agree completely. I also like the newly redesigned CR-V, but I think I’ll go with a 2018 CIvic SI sedan.
but no coupe, and the rear and front end do not look so good, and it is huge!
I'm gonna get that red Type R Honda badge for my Si. Yes I'm one of THOSE guys! lol
You're a great reviewer mate, you should definitely get more views :^)
really an excellent review.. So many others take cheap shots at the Si, but Alex breaks it down so completely.. Really puts Si in the back of the Civic lineup. I've sat in the Type R a few months ago and it has excellent seats.. However the Type R styling is for a very specific person... you know who you are!
That green, though.
IKR it's beautiful.
Ya it looks so good
The mpg numbers on the screen starting around 4:30 look wrong. Are they for the regular 1.5T engine?
Excellent comparison and review!
We now know what SI stands for😄 great review, Alex. I'd love the SI sedan not the coupe.
Agreed. I want a Si sedan in crystal black pearl. It will happen soon.
Great job Al ! Almost want it more than the type r. Better looking
You really want this in an automatic. I like it BECAUSE it's only in a manual.
Obviously, the sedan version will have lower insurance cost.
i think they are the same depending on the area you live in
Just got the SI coup and was sad to find the insurance on the coup is crazy high for a little rice bucket.
It’s even higher than my Corvette or Gen 2 Raptor,,,,,,why?
Alex, you have yet to do a full review on a subaru wrx. I would love to see a review of that car please
You deserve more view and subscriber
Fantastic review, Alex.
The short coming I heard on civic was that it is a hot commodity amongst the car thievery .
si with the accords 2.0 liter turbo, and type r front suspension for $2K more.
?
I am getting the 2019SI SEDAN in 2weeks. I had the 2016 ext till a tree fell on it😢
I have a '17 Si Sedan.
Its a shame thr type r are having transmission problems
It's just a handful...not all. I own the 2018 and have none.
They're not having transmission problems. It's just operator error.
Thanks Alex, great review
nice job Alex! Love watching these vids. The tenth gen Civic has been the best selling car in the US, because it's such a great platform. I have a Type R myself, great hatch (with a couple of things that need to be fixed under warranty)
FlyinGato you do not have a type r. Stop dreaming. Lol jk, love your channel man
haha! Thanks EvoBusa!
yooo im actually investing in a civic si atm
hey Leena! long time no see. you buying an Si?
yess because type r is something im looking into 5+ years later or so. Si seems fair because its a reasonable price ¡
Any review about New Accord 2018? Thx!! Continue with great job and a amazing channel...
Okay I subscribed to your channel Alex,I like how you explain not only to the ordinary non-car person but to us crazy car people that like the specs of the vehicle the weight ect, it looks like you do a lot of your filming maybe in the Bay Area? I live just south of Sacramento.
Timboslice he works for the truth about cars. He is Definetly good at his job
New civic Si has 192 lb-ft of torque, not 177 as the video stated.
What a cute lil tennis ball
Looking forward to the mid-cycle refresh. About then I’ll be looking for a sporty commuter and this should do nicely.
Better handling than the MX-5? Have the wildfires over there in California been burning more than just trees in your area?
Antenox hard to believe but Alex does drive ALOT of cars I trust what he says
Update: I drive a 2018 Si sedan now. Can confirm amazing handling easily on par with MX-5. LSD does wonders.
Excellent job
Canadian Si's have LED headlights, not halogen. Also have a compact spare tire, and navagation!
plz review accord 2018 asap
I miss my ITR with its 9200 redline lol
Hey Alex
The Torque is actually 192 ft-lb
I thought something was wrong
could have to do with what kinda gas your using they mad it so you can run normal gas in it and only recommend 91
Awesome video thanks
No more ADMU on Si’s. They’re leasing for between $179-199/mo now. Can’t beat that for a car in that range.
Beautiful Video!
great 4k video!
Great review, keep up the good work!!!
He's absolutely correct. The Si is just not that special anymore relative the rest of the Civic line-up anymore.
they got coupe sedan red blue green but i just really want a yellow hatch si so bad
I need that one.
Imagina esa belleza con 600HP sería una bestia
Say what u want about civics. They handle nice and the parts are cheap (price). Reliable no lemons.
