Leave it to Mr. Dykes to review the Type-R with civility & humility. "Leaving the track day diaries to other channels" and the racing to "more qualified people." And only Alex's "First Drive Reviews" are more thorough than other reviewers.
I understand the anti-spoiler comments completely. But this is a Devil Be Damned automotive choice...the wing is functional, and even those tiny little shark fins over the rear hatch serve a purpose. As a 62 year old driver, however, I definitely understand the anti-spoiler comments. :-) Alex refrained from the almost obligatory 0-60 run with the driver's hands off the steering wheel, and correctly pointed out that you can still get some torque steer feel if you're accelerating out of a corner. I'm glad he spent some time explaining the difference in the front suspension and how this affects torque steer, because this is one of the more expensive design changes for the CTR, and Honda are rightly proud of the design. All in all, I think he did a good job with this. He's clearly not your typical Honda "fan" of this type of vehicle, but he was fair and dispassionate, and explained the faults and foibles as well as the assets.
ha ha ha ha.... :-) I'm surrendering that point. The reason black is proving to be the most in-demand CTR is because that color effectively disguises all of the silly black plastic inserts.
The haters are going to hate. I got to spend some time behind the wheel and found it a blast to drive, comfortable, tons or rear seat leg room and a huge space to put stuff under the hatch. The visbility out the rear is no problem even with the big wing. I'm an old geezer and would glady have a type r. It hauls ass too.
Excellent review! I am re-discovering these Type R videos because I was fortunate enough to buy a Type R and this review has been spot on and informative. I LOVE the looks of this car. It does make you feel special from the inside to the outside and that is an incredible thing to say especially at this price point. That rear spoiler really helps make the Type R a Type R to me. What people don't say is how well you can actually see out the back window. Not only is that beautiful wing functional, but it designed to not obstruct your rear visibility. This car is AMAZING!.
I love the crazy styling, it's possibly the most beautiful production car ever made. From the negative comments, I'd say it's definitely not for conformists, introverts, self conscious types, or just folks who feel old at heart. Maybe I've played Mario Kart WAY too much, or maybe I just don't have the "grow up and be sensible" gene. This was a fine review video, thanks.
Thank you for your review, it's excellent. I own a blue Type R. If you are watching this review for inspiration as to whether you should buy one or not all I can say is I'm a car nut, I've driven my fair share of cars and the Type R is outstanding, very very difficult to fault.
I love the rear of the Type-R. It has some Lamborghini attitude to it, and with so many cars looking so similar, it's awesome to have something blow past it all.
Agreed! I am blessed to own a Type R and what people don't say is how well you can actually see out the back window. Not only is that beautiful wing functional, but it designed to not obstruct your rear visibility. This car is AMAZING!.
Rear wing is over the top for me but there's no mistaking it for what it is. BIG fan of Honda products for over 50 years, they have proven themselves to me many times over. The Type R looks like a blast to drive and like all Hondas should prove to be nailed together quite well. Great video Alex!
Awesome review. This is pretty much everything I am looking for in a car (manual, hatchback, reliable, relatively quick, fun to drive, around $35k (if I wait longer or search hard enough). The only downsides IMHO is the boy racer appearance and the wheel/tire setup (great for track/bad for pothole infested roads). I would also be hesitant to only have a flat repair kit as opposed to a spare tire.
My God . without a point and comma the man. I have not yet driven the other offers but for me it is like this: This Type R is a single sensation in the price-performance ratio. For the first time on operating temperature does not want to off the leash. The ergonomics are excellent. on a perfect road, the fun is incredible. Thank you HONDA.
Very good design. Don't listen to haters. They are losers who can't afford even KIA . And as always Alex you delivered very clean and spot on review. Thank you
Your reviews are always complete and extremely informative. To my taste, almost all honda's cars (including Acura's) are too exuberant int the way they look and make me think of the Anime super heroes my son was watching 15 years ago!
this car is actually faster than RS and golf R. and it a lot practical than the other two. great sport car and also outstanding for day to day based usage. typer4life
Nissan TitanWarrior well from what it looks like Honda decided to lower the hp to 250..but the torque is up to 280 and its going to be lighter than the camry.. so expect a very zippy car.. personally I like the v6 and the coupe which Honda decided to kill for this year.. but at least all cars will have a manual transmission
Nissan TitanWarrior the new accord will smoke the new camry 😍 , why? Because my audi TT 2.0t 2012 smoke the v6 370z and g37 is350 now days is the turbo rules wait and see the new accord
Neither the Camry or Accord are considered "performance" cars. If you look around you about town and take an accounting of the kinds of people who choose these cars, racing around is probably the farthest thing from their minds. By virtue of the turbo in the Accord however, it may be able to provide more grunt where drivers of these cars usually drive them.
Love it or hate it. It's becoming a legend. Even Chris Harris likes this car. He just did a review of it. The Golf R is quickly becoming forgotten because of the old age styling versus the Focus, Subaru and Honda.
This car is not over the top. Nowadays all cars look the same. Finally there is a car looking like this! Remember how cars looked in the 50ies and 60 ies.
The reason it doesn't have 4WD is simply because this is a FWD car and that's what they aimed the development on. Many cars hat are AWD could be 2WD, but aren't. So the arguments Alex is posing are simply incorrect. Honda didn't want it to be a rally-canon-for-the-road or anything. It's a racer not a crosser. Something like that. Honda does F1 and WTCC, not WRC. It's also supposed to be a proof of what a FWD can be as a sporty car, and currently it's the fastest FWD on the Nürburgring. Well, market wise, is this a smart choice? One could argue that in this class people are looking for a rally-oriented car and thus would go for the Focus RS (even though that's way more expensive) or WRX STi (not sure about the prices in the US, but here it's waaaay more expensive because of taxes). But looking at the many Type-R fans out there (and I assume Honda did some market research), I guess there's still some animo for it.
Great review as usual Alex! I like the performance, but not the hatchback styling or the massive wing. I picked up an LX sedan a few weeks ago and really like it.
As the owner of a 2006 Audi A3 I can't see how you would compare the two cars except, perhaps, in "feel". There certainly is a difference in exterior appearance!
Hi, I just mentioned this on another video. Here in the UK we have all the radar and related safety systems. E.g. Collision prevention with auto-braking, lane following, cruise control with distance control, sign reading, etc. The sensors are in two places: In the housing of the rear view mirror and in the bumper's open grid bit below the headlights.
From what i know the Type R has Honda sensing in Europe, comes with parking sensors in the GT version and the engine has 320HP tuned for 98RON fuel. Also i want to add that USA has very cheap cars, the same Type R in my country is arround $46000 while a new WRX STI costs $64000.
It's a little over the top but I'm a lot more forgiving to flamboyant aggressive styling if it's functional. An option to have a clean factory removal of the wing and other pointy bits would solve most of people's hang ups. But Honda won't do that. Honda isn't a big fan of options.
I personally love the Type R. One can argue it looks ricey, but you won't call a Porsche 911 GT3 RS which also has giant wing, diffusers and splitter and both of them are functional aerodynamics. My only reservation is Honda dealers in North America bending over every buyer asking for a Type R. Hopefully with a longer production run in 2018 this won't be an issue starting next year.
Please review the new Civic Si !!! Thank you for all of your videos, Alex. I am currently between the Elantra sport and Civic Si, and a review from you on the latter would really help me make my decision. Thanks again!
I love this thing. I'm not currently in the market for this type of car at the moment, but wouldn't mind owning one in the future. If this does fail, Honda must know that it will be, in part, due to the DEALER markups. Hope they know that.
Honda skimped out on 4WD to lessen reliability issues, yet WRXs and STIs have always been 4WD and incredibly reliable. I think Honda just skimped out on 4WD to decrease costs for them and offer less value to consumer.
Agreed. A compact version of the torque vectoring SH-AWD of Acura would have taken the Type-R to the next level. Honda skipped the AWD for cost reasons. A detailed mechanical review in a different site showed that there is built-in space under the Type-R to fit in an AWD system (aka Type-R is "AWD ready").
As a 60+ grandfather who has driven Honda's for the last 30 years, I'm almost tempted to buy this car for my son so he can stop driving his Honda Fit. He had so much fun in his Integra Type R until it was stolen. Not that's there's anything wrong with a Fit, it's a Swiss army knife type of vehicle. But I'm afraid of my grandsons getting in over their heads. The older one doesn't care about cars, but the younger one does. I drove a Corvette under a guard rail way back in the day and lived to tell the tale, not sorry, but don't want to be the "enabler."
Alex, as always I really like the review. Anyone over 25 yrs. old will look like they are driving their younger brother or son's car. Alex , can you drive this car down to HWY 198 A.K.A. Death Curves and video the handling. If HWY 198 looks too scary, try HWY 25 South bound from Tres Pinos. If you do go down there, stay alive, I do want to see your reviews every Friday. :)
Love this car. Very upset to hear about owners having transmission. Problems. I hope honda works this out. I would love to see a toned down version with 18 rims. Maybe even a bare bones entry model
Alex, the engine in this FK8 Type-R is not completely new, its actually the same K20C1 engine that's in the previous generation FK2 Type-R which is not officially available in the States. The new Type-R does have a different intake and exhaust system, and its tuned slightly higher than the FK2
This car is awesome, though i think they should do a few things to make it more palatable to people like me. I would use this car every day, so i would say if this car lost the wing, went down to 18 inch rims, and increased the fuel capacity, this would be winner!!!
The Civic R Type is a car for those that do not have experience with or know what an actual sports car is. Just the fact that this car is FWD makes it totally undesirable to real "sports car" enthusiasts. Beyond that, it actually looks like a decent car. Well appointed to appeal to it's real user base, which is mostly young, inexperienced sporty car enthusiasts. It would probably make a decent first sporty car for a responsible young person.
really? 7:43.8 on the 'ring and it's just a 'decent first sporty car' for those that 'do not have experience with or know what an actual sports car is'. this thing is the fastest FWD car in the world, as much fun on a track as anything AWD (notice i left out RWD).
lmfao Talk about out of touch This is faster around the ring than v12 lambos - crushes 300hp Cayman lap times and will walk away from a GT4 with just a tune - thanks for the laughs kid
I love the fact that the Type-R is a hatch, but yes, would love to tone down the looks of the rear in particular. Get rid of the big wing and the non-functional black tack-ons in the back.
I'd take the Ford Focus RS over the other performance hatchbacks because I find it the most attractive of all the hatches(up front at least) and for being AWD and having 350 horsepower.
well you know you bought a very Japanese style hot hatch with this one, some will love it and others wont... but thats why there so many other choices out there. good review by the way
If you want a DIY Si Hatchback just swap in the Si's transmission to get the LSD and get a tune. Since they have the same engine in different states of tune, the trans would give you the good power on handling and the tune could actually even make it faster than a stock Si. The only reason I say so, is they decided not to make the Si in hatch form, and they use the same general engines, I believe the only differences are the states of tune since they both make the same torque but one makes more HP. I'm assuming with the trans from the Si it would handle much like it on power and you could always go for coilovers too to get a firmer more sport feeling ride, it may not actually handle better with coils, I don't know how soft the stock suspension is. But with a tune I'm sure you could get somewhere around like 230hp and 200 ft lbs of torque with the stock engine just using more boost and slightly more fuel.
without the wing the type r would look pretty much exactly like the civic hatch. i like the differentation, but understand the stealth appeal of one without a huge wing. imo, honda got the aesthetics right with the civics (it's all subjective anyway). the one glaring ugliness though is the faux vents on the front and back. i was hoping the type r would make them functional but, alas, no.
Come to the UK. Our police are genuinely rock solid, and the country is so small you don't really get "small town" stuff happening. Well we do, but it's on a different scale.
I have to admit, it's a strange comparison set, but I haven't driven the car... Though I know Alex would appreciate a lovely all-out performance machine, his heart lies in the sensible machine with a thick smear of performance and luxury. It sounds to me like Honda has softened the Type-R, perhaps to justify bringing it to the US market, for more mainstream appeal.
When you are getting a type r you are not looking for Honda sensing or safety features like Lane assistant of start stop features or whatever you call those things your getting it for the performance and fun not to drive it like it's a Mercedes that just adding unessary weight to it. you wouldn't be needing these features If you knew how to drive...
I was only able to sit in a pre production Type R that was being readied for a dealer track day at Homestead Speedway... Those seats are incredibly comfortable and I'm a fat old guy! Except for the very weird looking rear end, it is an attractive little sports car, esp in white.. The rear wing is a deal breaker for me, however.
My Type R is being built on 7/1/2019. I'm 62 years old.
I am 63. This car is amazing.
I am 61 best car i have ever driven, good choice Stephen
i am 55. this type R is my best car i ever had so far
I'm 50 and happy with my ctr
Did it come through? It's an astounding bit of engineering :)
Make me laugh, everyone slams honda for being to conservative. They make a car out of the norm and its too much.......i love it
Leave it to Mr. Dykes to review the Type-R with civility & humility. "Leaving the track day diaries to other channels" and the racing to "more qualified people." And only Alex's "First Drive Reviews" are more thorough than other reviewers.

ha ha ha ha.... :-) I'm surrendering that point. The reason black is proving to be the most in-demand CTR is because that color effectively disguises all of the silly black plastic inserts.
Blake Swan they’re cosmetic? Obviously
The look is over the top an ridiculous.... and I love it.

Alex i like your presentation on every vehicle, you are very relax and at the point most of the time. keep it up man.
One of best reviews I've seen on UA-cam good job lots of littles and unknown details told good job.
I love the crazy styling, it's possibly the most beautiful production car ever made. From the negative comments, I'd say it's definitely not for conformists, introverts, self conscious types, or just folks who feel old at heart. One of the best reviews of the Type R. Succient and well executed video. Well done!
Holy shit, this guy can review!! Very thorough and definitely knows what he’s talking about.
As always, a fantastic, very comprehensive review. Keep up the great work
I love the rear of the Type-R. It has some Lamborghini attitude to it, and with so many cars looking so similar, it's awesome to have something blow past it all.

Alex, thanks for your reviews...they're comprehensive, objective and insightful.
Excellent walkthrough!!! Great job!!!
Extremely thorough review. Thank you very much
Alex, good work as always. Yes, I would miss a traditional hand break.
Great Review. I really like this gen Civic more than the previous one.
Rear wing is over the top for me but there's no mistaking it for what it is. BIG fan of Honda products for over 50 years, they have proven themselves to me many times over. The Type R looks like a blast to drive and like all Hondas should prove to be nailed together quite well. Great video Alex!
Awesome review Alex I will always enjoy your reviews
Great pick for a review Alex! Thanks!
Really like Alex reviews. Honest and to the point without the fan boy bias.
atlast I have found a very good review 😊 keep it up sir 👍🏻
Thanks for the work. Keep it up.
Oh and for the internet trolls... FIRST. Lol JK
Did you really just compared a Type R to ... a CLA250? That's insulting to the Type R.
Con Tra what about a qx80 or a q50 you can compare any car to any car .
Your review is by far the most useful review for average consumer. I am very surprised!
I like how new Hatchbacks have Manual Transmissions Ex: Civic Type R and Focus RS
My God . without a point and comma the man.
Thank you
What an amazing review. CANNOT WAIT TO GET MINE >_
Your reviews are always complete and extremely informative. To my taste, almost all honda's cars (including Acura's) are too exuberant int the way they look and make me think of the Anime super heroes my son was watching 15 years ago!
Not very many people like the wing on the back, but I freaking love it!
Definitely my dream car. I think this car only improved with time.
best car reviewer on youtube!
Great review as usual!
this car is actually faster than RS and golf R. and it a lot practical than the other two. great sport car and also outstanding for day to day based usage. typer4life
Julian Eccleshall the R with the DSG is a bit faster 0-60.
Not practical in NH. in the winter
I've seen one in person. It looks good to me.
In Canada, Golf R (base model) and Type R cost almost the same. And Ford focus RS is around 9k expensive than the both.
thisisnalin type R has only one trim which it is fully loaded
99 we have a "tech" package here in Canada
thisisnalin I would go with golf r over this
505 enthusiast Good luck on VW labor rate lol Type R also weighs less.
Focus RS is selling for 57k CAD.... you should check Ford.ca
I just can't get over its looks.
Weirdly this is the first time I've really noticed the fidelity of a 4k video!
Excellent review as always. Your comparisons are spot on, truly agree with your opinions. Nice to have an unbiased, complete review.
4:20
Interesting that he mentions that, since the 2018 Accord will need this much power to compete with the 300+HP Camry V6
It won't keep up with the Camry, but it will get better fuel economy, for whatever that's worth.
yea, what was he smoking at 4:20...
Nissan TitanWarrior the new accord will smoke the new camry 😍 , why? Because my audi TT 2.0t 2012 smoke the v6 370z and g37 is350 now days is the turbo rules wait and see the new accord

Exactly. This is one of those things you either love or hate. The alleged ugliness aside, all people who have driven it liked it quite a lot.
YAY! been waiting on this forever! Alex can we also get a review on the new Audi A4 Please?(3rd Attempt)
Thank you for the details of the nav/ infotainment. Local dealership wouldn't even turn on the case to let me try it for myself.
Good review and fair! 👍

L.GH. Djoetma Honda does have a Type R rally car. It does have 4wd
Thank you, someone finally said it... It looks like a sedan.
great detailed review! I'm doing an "owner's review" after driving mine for over 1k miles, it's an awesome car!
FlyinGato what's up man
What up!
Have any kids? If so, how is this car with them?
Gato how much you paid? I just got mine not even a week ago
Adrian Esteves you like it so far? I’m debating still
Awesome review as always alex
I always find with most things in life, those that cant afford to buy it, put it down.
very well done review. professional and no annoying bullshit. subscribed
Great review as usual Alex! I like the performance, but not the hatchback styling or the massive wing. I picked up an LX sedan a few weeks ago and really like it.
5.3 secs 0-60 is very impressive considering other journalists seem to hit it in around 6 secs
Picked up a 19 Type R about 3 weeks ago, love it
Congrats man, got mine last Tuesday
@@cooleye8887 Thanks! If you're in the market for a vehicle (or even if you're not) check one out!

@Alex on Autos- I can definitely sense more excitement in your voice. As always, you do a great job with the reviews.
A Sam weirdo
D.E.P H MC- Its okay to be a weirdo. Type-R can bring excitement on anybody's face.
A Sam he said that the design was a bit much for him that's not so true lol

We need a 350 HP Acura SH-AWD version of this car. :-)
George Knighton hell yes. Bring back the integra.
I love this thing. I'm not currently in the market for this type of car at the moment, but wouldn't mind owning one in the future. If this does fail, Honda must know that it will be, in part, due to the DEALER markups. Hope they know that.

It would probably make a decent first sporty car for a responsible young person.
really? 7:43.8 on the 'ring and it's just a 'decent first sporty car' for those that 'do not have experience with or know what an actual sports car is'. this thing is the fastest FWD car in the world, as much fun on a track as anything AWD (notice i left out RWD).
lmfao Talk about out of touch
This is faster around the ring than v12 lambos - crushes 300hp Cayman lap times and will walk away from a GT4 with just a tune - thanks for the laughs kid
Cool Casio intro
I love the fact that the Type-R is a hatch, but yes, would love to tone down the looks of the rear in particular. Get rid of the big wing and the non-functional black tack-ons in the back.
I'd take the Ford Focus RS over the other performance hatchbacks because I find it the most attractive of all the hatches(up front at least) and for being AWD and having 350 horsepower.
At 17:15, states that the Ford Focus is starting to feel a bit old. Didn't they just update it in 2017?
+CMUBruin they did, and yet is still shows its age
well you know you bought a very Japanese style hot hatch with this one, some will love it and others wont...
but thats why there so many other choices out there. good review by the way
If you want a DIY Si Hatchback just swap in the Si's transmission to get the LSD and get a tune.
I hope you were able to get some track time out at the Ridge in the Type R.
Alex is the best !!!!!
I think the Si also has the separate steering assist motor on the rack as well, no?
Man if only they put that engine into the coupe model...thatd be an amazing car
Didn't the Integra type r release in America? I'm confused.
If you enjoy having cops following and harassing you, get the Type R.
My towns police followed me in a 30 year old pickup. I can't imagine how it'd be in this thing
Come to the UK. Our police are genuinely rock solid, and the country is so small you don't really get "small town" stuff happening. Well we do, but it's on a different scale.
If I had this in my driveway, my neighbors would think my 17yr old just bought a new car.
Do you like it better than sti or golf r
You'd think that oil temperature and oil pressure were an option alongside the boost gauge.
