  • First there was the frappé, the iced Nescafé born in Thessaloniki that revolutionized Greek coffee culture. Then came the freddo, iced Italian espresso, which surpassed even the frappé in popularity. I went to Thermaikos, the most historic and hippest café-bar in Thessaloniki, to ask the owner, Natasa, and top barista, Athanasia, to share the secrets of making these iconic drinks.

Where do you get these metal cups with the half sieve? She put the coffee inside and the ice cubes, shake it and then in the Glas, but without the ice prieces?

It's not necessary to have these! You can just add the warm coffee in a glass with one ice cube and stir it well for 5-10 seconds, then add the rest of the ice cubes and then the whipped milk on top and you re good to go !

once you drink a freddo you will NEVER go back to a frappe. anyone you see in Greece drinking a frappe is most likely a tourist that doesn't know any better
