I was at Beaver Stadium watching Penn State win. When the kick was blocked that was the loudest cheers of the day. It was deafening. Absolutely awesome still.
Received a phone call from a friend right after this play as they were playing it on the big screen at Penn State after their game was over with. Their crowd was going crazy!
I’ll never forget keeping tabs on this game on the sports ticker. All day getting texts saying “app state is hanging in there vs Michigan”. Then every TV in the bar had the game on for the last drive and the blocked kick. Set the tone for the rest of the college football season.
Michigan really should have no business being in the B1G or the FBS after losing to Appalachian St. My Buckeyes be beatin their bitch asses every year since we had Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer is 6-0 against those scrub asses , and they always struggle against small schools cause the year after Appalachian St. beat them, my hometown Toledo Rockets beat them and a couple years ago in 2013, a bad Akron almost beat them, cause it was 4th & goal at the Michigan's 4 yd line. All Akron had to do was complete a pass into the end zone, but couldn't convert.
I'm about 30mi away from app st and I remember that morning telling my dad that app st will get a butt kicking then I turn ESPN on about 4:00 and saw the score i had to see 3or4 times before i could believe it
I remember this like it was yesterday week 1 this was a early game too 11 a.m. kickoff my time they cut live to the field goal attempt and it was just a MASSIVE upset and story to start the day and really for that whole season. Crazy!
have you ever noticed that when something bad happens to the team a person is roting for they always put their hands on top of their head like they are soldiers surrenduring
I love it. Fans also put their hands up when a last second basketball shot is made. Then the hands either go to the defeated position you mentioned if the shot is missed, or they go wild with celebration. Best example of this is Villanova's arena watching the 2016 NCAA title game.
3 years old when this game happened. There are videos of me taken by my mom during this year. And you can here my dad saying “oh my gosh” in the background, its hilarious. WPS!!!
"There is nothing ... there is nothing that can keep me down, not a loss to Appalachian State, not a loss to Oregon, not 100 losses and not the loss of my job." Lloyd Carr
Notre Dame's loss was pretty bad, too. They lost 33-3 at home to Georgia Tech. But I have to admit, Michigan's loss to Appalachian State was easily more stunning.
Comcast and other cable outlets in Michigan didn't pick up the Big Ten Network right away. The Big Ten Network just premiered last Thursday. Michigan fans should thank Comcast for sparing them from watching perhaps the most stunning loss in Michigan's football history.
@piratesmvp What you're talking about is the old 1-A and 1-AA classifications. Agreed that it's not Division II, but there's a pretty big difference between 1-A and 1-AA. It's a really big upset because Michigan has been a perennial Big 10 challenger and possible national championship team.
Four events shaped 2007: Boise State 43, Oklahoma 42 (Fiesta)(1/1) Appalachian State 34, @ Michigan 32 (9/1) Stanford 24, @ USC 23 (10/6) and the 15 Laterals (1 minute and 27 seconds) it took for Trinity to beat Millsaps on 10/27 College Football in 2007 was wild. Any other year-making events that I missed, please post on this board.
Dude you forgot the biggest one of all in 2007. The Gators crushing the Buckeyes in Championship Game 41-14 after all of OSU's boasting and arrogance. Leading off the domination of the SEC and the humiliation and downfall of the B10
First game of the season, 5th in the country. These games are suppose to be warm up games for teams like Michigan. They lost on a blocked field goal which rarely ever happens. Pretty crazy if you ask me.
Im a Florida Gator fan and APP. State deserves a shot in Div.1. hey they might be the best in the country if they believe in themsleves. Go Gators!!!!!
@Society619 WTH are u talking about. App. State plays in the FCS subdivision (formerly known as 1-AA). They're both in division 1 just different subdivisions.
Ahah i remember this , me and my dad were watching this very game and my dad is a big wolverines fan and he like ligit almost cryed!!, and i was on the floor laughing!! Go hokies!!
Im an alabama fan and i dont really watch big 10 but i happened to watch this game and i had to say WOW like 100 times. but i still think michigan is good even though i dont like them. u cant judge a team by 1 upset. ROLL TIDE
I wouldn't be surprised if Michigan drops out of the Top 25 completely after this shocking and stunning loss to a I-AA school. Ohio State took care of business, beating up on their division I-AA opponent, Youngstown State. They almost certainly will soar ahead of Michigan in the polls.
Watch #1 for Michigan, the last guy on the left... he is supposed to block inside-out, or the gap to his right FIRST because he has the shorter distance to the ball. #1 blocked to his left, the defender came through the gap on his right, untouched, and blocked the kick. If you watch the blocked kick from just under 2 minutes to go, earlier in the game, #1 throws his shoulder into the guy coming to his right, then lunges at the guy to his left. Neither of those two blocked that kick.
Appalachian State isn't just "some I-AA school". We're actually good, and that's why we won. More people should be giving our school and the FCS/I-AA subdivision respect than making excuses for Michigan's loss.
I remember that day, I was just completely stunned. That is the greatest upset in sports history. It's the equivalent of pitting a college football team against an NFL team and the college team winning.
I was at App when this happened. I have friends who are just now getting over their hangovers.
I will remember this forever.
I hope they're okay
Yo they good yet
@@HawkstaBeard A few of them are over it but they went back to drinking when we wong that championship a few seasons ago
you may know my friend/co worker tilley then. he was at app state during this time also
“No one wants to see Michigan playing Appalachian State” - Kirk Herbstriet
Michigan sure af didn't
Classic. The coach is so stunned he doesn't even take his headset off!
😂😂😂

Coach so shocked he forgot to take off his headset lol
Smart Man.. A Win that'll last the test of time
As an Ohio State fan, this never, ever, ever gets old. :)
as an MSU fan i concur.
Penn state alum, couldnt agree more
Go bucs
Idk... would you rather have this, or Touble With The Snap?
Couldnt be more correct
Didnt Paul Crew say that this was supposed to be a "tune-up game"?
Whoa. The blocker CAUGHT THE BALL. That's insane! I hadn't noticed that before.
I go to App State and my Dad lives in MI. There are very few things that give me more joy than wearing my App State gear proudly whenever I visit.
I was in the Horseshoe when they announced this upset. definitely one of my favorite memories as a buckeye fan!
16 years later... this still makes me smile.
Signed, Buckeyes fan.

One of the greatest upsets!? This is the GREATEST upset of all time!!!

@wolfjak wait. The US hockey team also plays college football???
@@GabrielUngacta the announcer said in sports history, meaning all sports.

It has to be.
This should be required watching for all Michigan fans...
At 0:12 you can hear 110,000 disappointed fans yell out a collective "NOOOOO" hahaha
This'll never get old.
It’s 2022 and I still get goosebumps over this!

That's a coach that just couldn't be prouder of his boys. Him choking up was icing on the cake.
Funniest upset ever. Michigan should be kicked out of FBS.
Lmfao, this is historic. ..

i visited app state on a college tour and the tour guide probably mentioned their great victory over michigan about 5 times :)

Im not a fan of either but I love to hear stories when the underdog pulls through. Good job App. State.
Nobody talks about that app state we’re the FCS national champions that year.
Back-to-back in '05 and '06, and they would win their 3rd consecutive in '07.
He was totally choked up.
Who's here after Michigan won the national championship?
Oh baby. This NEVER gets old.

that was great! best upset ever... gives me chills
They've won 3 straight Division I-AA championships. They're for real.

That would be even a bigger upset. App State had won two straight National Championships in FCS so they were a considerable force to be reckoned with.
