1-AA (FCS today) had been catchingup to 1-A for a while before that time playing very tight games. Today it's actually not uncommon to see the top FCS schools beat FBS schools even occasionally ranked ones. UNI, NDSU, etc... It's also good to see App State make it in FBS as a really good Sun Belt team, same for Georgia Southern. That rivalry continues.

I went to Appalachian State in the early 90's. Jerry Moore had just started building the program to what it is today. Two coaching changes since and still winning. If you've never been to Boone for a game it really is worth the trip. Go Mountaineers!!!!!!!
Well they had been to the rose bowl and in the big ten title run for the past couple of years before 2007. They were ranked No.2 going in to the game in Ohio State.
@Arrowhead Water yup 07. At one point we were ranked number 2 and that Saturday number 1 LSU lost to unranked Kentucky. All we had to do was beat unranked Oregon State and we'd of been number 1. But we lost... and apparently it killed all moral and we finished the season 6-6. I only remember so vividly cuz I was at that game. But anyways, hope you guys come up too, in fact I'm down for any pac12 team to come up at this point. We need a spot in that "playoff" yo.
“Biggest upset in College Football history” was Centre College vs Harvard in 1921 when Centre won at Harvard Stadium 6-0 in front of a capacity crowd of 43,000. The game is significant because it was the FIRST TIME a team outside the East beat one of the Big Three of Harvard, Princeton and Yale. However, like App St, this was no fluke. The previous season Centre was 8-2, losing at Harvard and at GA Tech, but beat TCU 63-7 in the Fort Worth Classic bowl game, and Centre was undefeated the year before that. In 1921 Centre outscored their opponents 282-6 in the regular season and was un-scored upon in 9 games which included AUB, CLEM, Kentucky, Tulane and AZ (all but AZ were in the Southern Conf). Of note in 1920 Center beat Howard (AL) 120-0 and blanked 7 total opponents that year and held most opponents scoreless over a 6 year period from 1917 to 1922. In 1919 undefeated Centre held 5 teams scoreless and outscored their opponents 485-23 while beating WVA, IND, KY and VA among others.
One of my closest friends was a freshman at App State in fall of 2007 and I remember him calling me that day with people cheering and chanting in the background from the campus. Watching these highlights always make me smile because this will forever be one of the greatest upsets in sports history! Great video!
I was a freshman there at the time and we took down the goalpost, threw it in duck pond, then carried it all the way through downtown and up the mountain to the Chancellors house. Epic weekend.
@@Jackplexico I was there too! Also freshman in 07. That was the craziest shit next to Obama getting elected and Osama getting killed lol. I thought when we beat Michigan the town was gonna explode. I remember for days after there were traffic cones and clothes in every tree on campus
I was at App State from 88'-92'. I wrestled, and lived in Justice Hall (athletic dorm) along with all the football players. Jerry had just started building up the football team, but was really struggling while I was there. I lost my mind in 2007. I was watching the game on t.v. , but had to leave and go somewhere before it ended. I was driving when they blocked the field goal, and was very lucky I didn't wreck my car. One of the best memories of my life.
I lived in Justice Hall in the 91-92 year. Actually with the RA on the floor with the football team (4th floor.) Got to know a lot of those guys. Few of them went pro back then. I guess our star that year was Linebacker Rico Mack.
App completely lost momentum in the 3rd quarter. They could have rolled over and taken a moral victory but instead they pulled together and played the best 2 minutes of football in team history. Most incredible football game I have seen in my 52 years.
This was the ONLY football game my daughter attended while at Michigan. Her friends asked her if she knew anything about Appalachian State (since she's from NC) and she told them she thought they were pretty good but were in a minor conference, but she'd like to go to the game since it was a team she'd heard of !

This date represented the culmination of a 10 day nightmare for me as a sports fan. Besides being a Michigan fan I was also a Baltimore Orioles fan. Ten days before this happened on August 22, 2007 the Orioles began a 9 game losing streak when the Texas Rangers set the modern day record for runs in a game when they stomped the Orioles 30-6. The 9 game losing streak ended on Friday August 31 when they beat the Red Sox in Fenway. The next day September 1 2007 my Wolverines didnt just lay an egg but dropped it and it cracked. I thought to my self.......after a 10 day period like this it can't get any worse........well it did. You see......after the Appalachian State loss later on that same evening the Orioles were playing the Red Sox again after beating them the night before to end their losing streak.......well that night the Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz pitched a no hitter vs the Orioles 10-0........nice way to end a Saturday after your college football team become the victim in the biggest upset in sports history since the US hockey team Miracle on Ice vs the Soviet Union in 1980. Oh yeah......as a bonus footnote......although their season hadn't started yet I was also a Washington Redskins fan......nice huh? 😦
I feel like this moment, this singularity, was one that the entire Division I-AA could celebrate as one, whether they didn't play Appalachian State all year or were a conference rival. This team just represented their level and singlehandedly raised their profile tenfold in front of the whole country. I'm glad we're starting to see more FCS teams get some wins on FBS teams now. The gap's closing, makes the sport more fun.
I'm the same way as a WVU fan when we lost to Pitt in 2007. I watched it on TV and was one of my first football experiences and had fucking zero idea why everyone was upset.
I just did a quick scan of the 2007 App State roster- no fewer than 5 played in the NFL is some capacity. It was an upset but we had some talent on this team. App State '86.
Nobody understood how good App State was. As a guy who roots for another FCS school (James Madison, which itself has two national championships), I knew. They dominated FCS for years in the 2000s almost as much as North Dakota State does now. Those guys could ball.
I am a Michigan fan that grew up in VA and followed all of the FCS programs (all my friends and family either went to JMU or ODU). I warned my family a few days before the game that this was a trap and should've never been scheduled. I remember everyone saying this is a 1AA school...this is a cupcake. I was like...dude you don't understand...these guys just won back to back natties.
@@drewsmith4452 And now we'll get to play them in the Fun Belt. Can't wait. I'm happy JMU finally is pulling the trigger and moving up to FBS. It may be a rough time, but the SBC is one hell of a good conference with a lot of natural geographic rivals for us.
I got introduced to them when they lit up SIU in the playoffs one year and said they were for real!Coincidentally enough, NDSU was a power at the same time as App State, but was ineligible for the playoffs because they were transitioning from D2.
16 years later, on the same day, Appalachian State and Georgia Southern would both get major victories against Power 5 schools as a Sun Belt member. Weird how that turned out
I was lucky enough to go to App State from 2004-2008. I was at all 3 national title games, sat with 5 buddies on the 10th row on the 35 yard line behind Michigans bench in the big house, and watched us play LSU with a hurricane on the way right after Katrina the year before. It was amazing to watch this team. It will always be a great day to be a Mountaineer!!!!!!
Great video! Very well put together. I do wish that App St could have had a few clips at the end that show them moving up to the FBS level, joining the Sun Belt, making it to a bowl game and getting their first bowl win. They've really come along, and so has the Sun Belt Conference. Conference-USA used to be a stronger conference but then the Sun Belt went and ate their lunch. The whole Sun Belt thing probably deserves a separate video of its own, but it would have been nice to see App St move up at the end there.
Though I respect Michigan, their and other big name schools entitlement attitude was the reason why I enjoyed their defeat. And the commentators were eating crow but were focused on the loss.
It’s funny how nobody mentions the time management by App State. Not running the clock down and kicking the FG on 1st down with 30 seconds left ended up resulting in the greatest upset moment in college football history.
Love the ending as it is, but had Michigan made the kick, not kneeing it, spiking it and then kicking it with :02 on the clock by ASU would have gone down as the most bone headed time mismanagement ever.
There were so many different emotions in this video. Going from rooting Appalachian state and hoping Michigan looses to then feeling bad for the Michigan coach and hoping he goes out with a win. Great editing!
One thing in the lead up I would've included was the Michigan vs Ball State game where they nearly blew a 31-12 lead, stopping them on 4th down to prevail 34-26. Appalachian State watched a lot of game film on the game to figure out how to beat Michigan as an underdog. That really paid off as we got one of the greatest upsets in history.
@@MarloSoBalJr Hawai'i peaked at #10; USF made it to #2 before falling victim to the #2 curse that year. The #1 spot was owned by USC, LSU, and Ohio State (except for week 13 when Missouri butted in). #2 was where all the movement was; LSU, USC, Cal, USF, Boston College, Oregon, Kansas, WVU and Georgia all made appearances at #2.
I remember this game, and exactly where I was when it happened. I was standing in Beaver Stadium after a Penn State game....it felt like no one had left. Everyone was crowded around the TV's, much like this video showed. Surreal moment.
Holy cow the first two minutes brought back some serious memories for me. I grew up in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area and spent most of my early life going to Northern Iowa football and basketball games! I was only 8 years old when me and my mom went by charter bus to Chattanooga to watch the UNI v App State championship. It was an incredibly fun and eventful trip all around and I’ll remember it my whole life but was without a doubt my first big heartbreak as a sports fan. After that it was history, App State went on an incredibly dominant run for years and years! After seeing the results of their dominance first hand myself and just looking purely at numbers, I really do not pity anyone that underestimates them lol. They deserve all the success they’ve worked for years and years.
you should have gotten the Michigan Radio announcers Pre-game commentary. They were reading the App State program's descriptions for each player. App State did not have any info on their football expirence, just generalized statements on their major and social activities.
To get context of what this means for those that don’t get it. This upset is akin to a minor league baseball team beating the Yankees after just missing the world series the year before.Or Alabama beating the Chiefs with all their starters in.
Updated: Aged like milk. Can we update this video? I have crow to eat Michigan still hasn't been the same. Still losing to Ohio State. No Big 10 titles. Harbaugh has underachieved big time.
@@Daniel-xp4yg they just got whooped by Wisconsin and barely survived unranked Army. The only way this season can be salvaged is by beating Ohio State (miracle #1) AND winning a so so bowl game (miracle #2).

With that being said, programs like App St/Boise St are why I would like to see an 8 team playoff with a place for the little guy to be able to sneak in. If App could get themselves into the AAC they would have a shot, but I dont see a Sun Belt team ever being able to get put into the playoff. Unless they end up playing UNC/S. Supposedly no one at the University ever took responsibility for its creation. Plenty of examples here on UA-cam highlighting its infamy, just search "Appalachian Hot Hot Hot"
You wonder if App St still moves up to FBS level if they didn't win this game. I know it took a few years before the jump up, but that win still gets attention today. They won two straight D-1AA titles before the upset, but everyone treated them like a dead skunk on the side of the road compared to Michigan. The win was truly an Earth-shattering moment for both programs.
@@wjatube That game was nuts. Oregon handed Michigan their worst loss since 1968!! It got forgotten because of that App State game, and rightfully so I’d say.
The Michigan football program had been ignoring the termites eating away at the porch for a while and this was the weight that collapsed it. Complacency and arrogance within the athletic department was laid bare here and then over the course of the catastrophic RichRod era.
Yes I saw that Notre dame vs northern Illinois!! Quite the upset of the season so far!! I would never consider a number 10 team getting beat by a #3 hardly anything close to an upset!! Especially when there is no clear starting QB on said #10 team!!! You can only ask your defense to do so much!! Now you put JJ McCarthy back at QB and Michigan is now #3 and Texas wouldn't of walked out with a win!!!!

This is the first game that really got me hooked on FCS football. Realized that EWU played these guys pretty close in the playoffs that year and thought, why does no one ever talk about this little school down the road? So much fun to study these little schools and see the look on people's faces when they realize how damn good some of the top tier FCS teams really are.
this dude got me hyped up for a game that was played almost 15 years ago LMAO remember seeing this on tv when i was a wee lad, it was such a crazy year for college ball doubt it will ever be replicated
I graduated the year before. I was in Charlotte with my now wife. I’m a marching band kid, my understanding of college football is limited. This video was amazing for me as it clearly explained what made this game so significant and all the intricacies of the history leading up to and leading off of it, without any narration that assumes you know everything and gets annoying halfway through. Really awesome job here, bud.
Where were you when app state beat Michigan ? I was in my sophomore year dorm room with some buddies and a Michigan fan in the room. He was devastated, and I’ll never let him forget about it.
Thanks for giving Lloyd Carr his props. Not a Michigan fan but Mr Carr was classy and HIGHLY successful. A great coach. College football is massively competitive with loads of unrealistic expectations and coach Lloyd knew that. Finally we can look at him objectively. Wouldn't complain about their team, in Annarbor, having a position and status, like they did then, now would they?
Carr was a great guy but Michigan messed up by rushing their intentions of hiring Les Miles. His wife already picked out a house in Ann Arbor. They should've waited until after LSU's title game. Everything went public and Les had to back-out. If not, he certainly would've done a better job than RR and Hoke.
I’m very late to this video but I didn’t see it referenced in the video but that game was seen on tv by almost no one. App State vs That Team Up North was the first game to air on the big ten network but it wasn’t carried by most of the cable providers and was blacked out in most markets nationwide.
16:20 weird how they got down to the 5 and then decided to kick a field goal right away even though they had 30 seconds on the clock still. Obviously it worked out but considering Michigan was able to get into field goal range after...that's some pretty bad coaching
Yeah, they could have tried for the TD to make Michigan have to get a TD or at least run the clock all the way down for the attempt. Didn't matter in the end though
If you try to run the clock down and then spike it. You automatically lose the game if any of your o-line flinch before the snap or an illegal formation because of the 10-second runoff rule. not worth the risk.
Jerry Moore said after the game they did it to guard against a bad snap. If something goes wrong and you have to fall on a fumbled snap, you still have just enough time to get off a second try.
That App State team reminded me a lot of what we did at WVU with Pat White and co. for a couple of years in this same time period. Tons of speed and a spread offense that was tough to stop. They had so much speed and athleticism on both sides of the ball, they would have beaten quite a few FBS/Div-I teams that year. It's always great when Herby is so overconfident on Game Day, winds up having to eat his words quite a few times over the years with his blowout predictions, lol. Great to see him wrong twice in the same video. I see Rich Rod also made it into the end of this...lol.
Before that, they were the announcing team when Boise State upset Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. After this, I'll bet any coach of a ranked FBS team would get nervous if those two announced a game where his team was favored.
When the nearest person is 10 yards away and the RB is pulling away from them only way it wouldn’t be is if the got people penalty. So not that bold haha.

I went to Appalachian State in the early 90's. Jerry Moore had just started building the program to what it is today. Two coaching changes since and still winning. If you've never been to Boone for a game it really is worth the trip. Go Mountaineers!!!!!!!

Geez, I knew Michigan was good when they got upset but I didn't know they had actual national type hype
Yeah, I was surprised as well
Well they had been to the rose bowl and in the big ten title run for the past couple of years before 2007. They were ranked No.2 going in to the game in Ohio State.
"Big time games like cal and Tennessee" wow.... you dont hear that much these days
As a Cal fan it's crazy to think back to the mid to late 00's when we were able to crack the top 5 regularly and compete for pac 10 titles.
upside93 Aaron Rodgers and Marshawn Lynch. You guys had some talent run through back then
@Arrowhead Water yup 07.
As a vols fan, I can’t say that Tennessee has been in a sentence since then either
Arrowhead Water thanks! A bunch of my friends are on the team and I go there as well. We were doin gr8 till we lost our qb :(
“Biggest upset in College Football history”, thumbnail is the Big House... oh, I know what game this is about! Always happy to hear this story ^^
Haven't watched it yet, but is it App State?
InfinityFire Ohio fan?
Hey, I’m an OU fan and I thought losing to Boise was bad, but at least we lost in a bowl game.
Grew up a Michigan fan. I still get chills watching that. Go Mountaineers!!!
I was actually watching the game in Legends bar where the footage is shown at around 17:07
@@Jackplexico I was there too! Also freshman in 07. That was the craziest shit next to Obama getting elected and Osama getting killed lol. I thought when we beat Michigan the town was gonna explode. I remember for days after there were traffic cones and clothes in every tree on campus

I admit I keep coming back to this primarily to rewatch the montage of the final blocked field goal and the reactions. That was masterfully edited.

The 2007 App State victory over Michigan was the greatest game of football ever played at any level of the sport
Yes. Agreed.
It should be on one of those motivation posters in schools.
App completely lost momentum in the 3rd quarter. They could have rolled over and taken a moral victory but instead they pulled together and played the best 2 minutes of football in team history. Most incredible football game I have seen in my 52 years.
You don't really follow sports much, do you?
This was the ONLY football game my daughter attended while at Michigan. Her friends asked her if she knew anything about Appalachian State (since she's from NC) and she told them she thought they were pretty good but were in a minor conference, but she'd like to go to the game since it was a team she'd heard of !
Why did she only attend one game at Michigan? Just never able to get a ticket?
@@ScallywagBeowulf She was just never a big football fan. She did get Ohio State tickets every time they played in the Big House, but only so she could sell them!

This date represented the culmination of a 10 day nightmare for me as a sports fan. Besides being a Michigan fan I was also a Baltimore Orioles fan. Ten days before this happened on August 22, 2007 the Orioles began a 9 game losing streak when the Texas Rangers set the modern day record for runs in a game when they stomped the Orioles
And you lost the Redskins name.
Poor soul
I feel like this moment, this singularity, was one that the entire Division I-AA could celebrate as one, whether they didn't play Appalachian State all year or were a conference rival. This team just represented their level and singlehandedly raised their profile tenfold in front of the whole country.
I'm glad we're starting to see more FCS teams get some wins on FBS teams now. The gap's closing, makes the sport more fun.
Just no respect at all. They refused to learn how to pronounce our name. Refused to see us as serious.
This was my first college football game. I didn’t understand what it meant.

TEAM CLASSIC SONIC I’m crying 😭
@@xdgaming70 you're lucky lol
Look how good they've been in the FBS too. Great program.
They were a small program in a state with big programs.
I always loved signing Armanti Edwards as a free agent in Madden 11, this upset is the reason why I do it
Great video!

Yes
Cupcakes made of granite. They made the mistake of having their tune-up game be against a team that probably could have beaten most FBS teams.
Yep.
Same reason teams stopped scheduling the Dakota State teams
I live in Chattanooga and watching games at that stadium is legendary.
What a time to be alive, the 2007 college football season was like no other.

Really great video! You told a huge story spanning many years without evening talking!
This is an amazing video. Thank you.
Man, I love college football...
Appalachian State was really a pushover for the Wolverines, hey smartie.

25:41 Insert the bad punt at the big house against Michigan State in 2015
People forget App State was the best team in their league at the time
Thanks for giving Lloyd Carr his props.
This is why college football is the greatest sport in the world.
Their sign at 1:11 reminds me of Applebee's.
Dexter Jackson tore up the NFL.
It was pretty awful, should have at the very least, run one play, then spike it with one second to go. Moore nearly cost his team the game.
If you try to run the clock down and then spike it. You automatically lose the game if any of your o-line flinch before the snap or an illegal formation because of the 10-second runoff rule. not worth the risk.
They just wanted to play it safe for having no timeouts didn’t want to risk a fumble
Thom Brennaman and Charles Davis is a heck of an announcing team for a season opener between Michigan and a FCS team.
Before that, they were the announcing team when Boise State upset Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. After this, I'll bet any coach of a ranked FBS team would get nervous if those two announced a game where his team was favored.
7:12 that was a bold move, calling touchdown when he was still at the 30 yard line
When the nearest person is 10 yards away and the RB is pulling away from them only way it wouldn’t be is if the got people penalty. So not that bold haha.
He coulda fell down!
And THEY DID IT AGAIN
