My son is your age. We have no dog in the fight, (ACC schools for us) but we both remember this vividly. Just as I remember watching football with my dad in the 60s and 70s... You are wise, sir.
Im from Alabama and this was the first football game I ever saw in my life. It made me realize why so many people love this sport. This moment was magical .
One of the most significant losses in college football history. Bama was undefeated and ranked #1 for the entire regular season and was looking to three-peat...and boom! All of that was undone by that final second of regulation by their bitterest of rivals. 3:35 It was at this moment Saban knew, he fucked up.
Your toxic given I'm a huge bama fan and auburn is In the state of alabama idc how big of a rivalry there is. its stupid to say that you would route for a different state to win against your own. I would route for auburn if there not playing Alabama because it makes our state teams look good And you can sit there and say "aww someone had there feelings hurt cause there team lost" but truthfully that was an amazing play I'm not gonna be toxic about it
I just stumbled on this today. It's fun to watch and listen again to the broadcasters, two of the best in the business, talking about the play. They were stressing that nobody thought of a run back possibility, but I honestly did. When 'Bama decided to go for the field goal I said to my wife, who just happened to be in the room, "Auburn can win this on a run back." And it happened. One of those truly great moments to relive. Thanks for featuring it.

I remember going to school the following Monday and all the Alabama fan kids were all pissed off and sour! “He stepped out of bounds! Watch this video!” And showing everyone this video of the run that someone had edited/photoshopped to show the receiver had clearly stepped out of bounds. Making every excuse in the world. I live in Mobile, Alabama. My AU/UA friends were arguing and wanted me to pick a side (I’m a Gamecock fan obv). I just told them I have no part in this lmao.
I wonder what the odds were in that situation. 28-28, one second left, one play to go, Alabama kicking a field goal, and Auburn wins the game. 100 to 1 easy.
I'm not sure how familiar you are with Gary Danielson, but people that are fans of teams in the SEC have a general consensus that he's a fucking moron.
not a fan of either, but if I was in the stadium, I would repeat the words I've seen from a soccer palyer after his team won the league after 18 years "I wanna cry and die right here"

@@tommytimp That's why I don't understand why more teams don't send back a return man on 55+ yard FGs, especially in college. It's damn hard to get a ball up high enough for a college kicker, so I think there are more returns to be had.
@@andrejg4136 IDK if NCAA rules are different, but I'm assuming the reason is because there would almost never be a reason to take that risk on a 55+ yard FG unless it was the end of the half. You return anything less than to roughly mid field and you now have worse field position than if you didn't return it.
@@tommytimp No, but it's kinda surprising they didn't leave one or two speedier players in given Auburn seemingly lined up in Nascar package for the kick. In other words, Auburn didn't go so DT heavy. But on a return Auburn's personnel with extra speed has plenty of power to kick out enough blocks

Tyler Morgan131 Will have to look that one up, thx! I’d say these two Auburn games already have an edge because they are against Alabama and Georgia. Three big time football schools! Kentucky obviously is a big time basketball school. That’s strike one on any comparison with these.
I saw this at the Colisseum before the SC/UCLA game in the Sports Arena with 1,000 other SC fans. 1,000 neutral fans went absolutely ballistic. I can only imagine what it must've been like at Jordan Hare.
This game shattered my heart into a million pieces. My older brother cried all night long and for weeks after anytime we would here about that darn kick six ether on the radio or sports tv we’d share some tears. Nothing gets me more emotional than watching my team loose.
I will always remember this play not because of the play itself but I was watching it with my brother who could not care less about sports but on the last few minutes and especially the return he was frozen solid watching this game. It got people who don't watch sports to even freeze for just a moment to see this insane play. Always makes me smile remembering. Sports will always be amazing.
With pro teams, you're just cheering for some dudes who get paid millions of dollars to play for your city and don't have any particular loyalty to it. With college, you're cheering for players that specifically chose to go to your school. And you're cheering for them to represent your school. Then the fans get crazier when you add in marching bands, fight songs, game day traditions, etc. Pro atmosphere just can't compare. Real bands beat canned music over loudspeaker every time.
Just to give them a little more credit, old school announcers know how to let what the home viewer can see and hear tell the story. It's the new school of tv talking heads that can't shut up for a minute. Find a video of Vin Scully calling Game 1 of the 1988 World Series. Kirk Gibson hits a home run to end the game, and once Scully calls it gone, he doesn't say anything for nearly 70 seconds.
I'm back here watching this 11 years later, on the morning of the 2024 Iron Bowl. As a lifelong Ga. Bulldog fan, I really enjoyed this game. I'll be watching this for years to come along with The Dawgs 44-42 win over Georgia Tech after 8 overtimes last night.
@@saabrian it was a hilarious quip from one of the commentators but not a deliberate effort on Saban's part to throw his players under the bus. He had big guys out there to protect the field goal attempt. He thought it was going to be the last play of the fourth quarter so even if his team missed the kick it would be a safe call. No one in their right mind was banking that Auburn would return it the whole length of the field for a touchdown.
sometimes i get tears watching this. The history of this rivalry, passion on each side. An absolute College Football legendary moment for decades to come. When Davis actually made the corner without going out, that was just an awesome moment. ...and it's always nice to see the devil get his comeuppance.
Not an Auburn fan. But man this gives me chills still all these years later. Just one of the most incredible plays ever and the stadium going apeshit just adds to the insane intensity of this play.
kingzms ツ yeah it’s like they’ve never heard of Larry Allen. This “fat guy” chased down literally one of the fastest linebackers from a standing start from behind. Dude was a legend
Deacon, I was there sitting sitting 17 rows up on the sideline that Chris Davis streaked down. It was the craziest sports moment I have ever experienced in my life.
One doesn’t have to be a die hard Auburn fan to want to come back and watch this amazing 2013 season they had. Arguably the two greatest plays in college football history: same team, same stadium, back to back games. Unbelievable!!!
droidean Stakes weren't nearly as high? Dude, the winner would've gone on to the SEC and BCS title games. The winner of the Iron Bowl for the past 4 years has gone to the NC game. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about.
***** Actually, the only thing the winner of this game was entitled to was a bid to the SEC conference championship game, nothing more. Still has to play a good Missouri team for the automatic bid to a BCS bowl game. The previous winners of Iron Bowls to Natty games is irrelevant, logically speaking. Nice try, though.
The 06 National Championship/Rose Bowl was more entertaining than this game and had much higher stakes, and that is just a game within the last 10 years; let alone all-time.
droidean Missouri was no challenge, so the SEC was a guaranteed title. The 06 NC doesn't even compare to what the Iron bowl has produced in the past few years. The Iron bowl is never irrelevant, it's the greatest rivalry in college football and one of the best in all of sports.
Well, Saban’s focus was on the kick. He had his guys out there that could protect the hold and kick. 9 times out of ten, even from 57 yards, the kick will sail over the end zone which is why returns of missed field goals are rare. Kudos to Auburn for even having a guy back there. Someone in the skybox noticed the personnel Bama had and thought quick. Personnel for a field goal and a kickoff are totally different.
As a Kentucky/College Football fan, I’ll never forget where I was watching this live. One of the most unforgettable moments in CFB history. I was absolutely stunned.
So crazy to think that this happened almost eight years ago... I was watching this with my brother and his friend (who was a Bama fan), and my mom and dad were watching this in another room. Watching Bama lose this game is one of the greatest college football moments EVER!!!
Artemis because they never lose ? right 😂
One of the most significant losses in college football history. Bama was undefeated and ranked #1 for the entire regular season and was looking to three-peat...and boom! All of that was undone by that final second of regulation by their bitterest of rivals. 3:35 It was at this moment Saban knew, he fucked up.
No, Johnny “Failure” Football tearing up bama for 4 quarters was best
Your toxic given I'm a huge bama fan and auburn is In the state of alabama idc how big of a rivalry there is. its stupid to say that you would route for a different state to win against your own. I would route for auburn if there not playing Alabama because it makes our state teams look good
And you can sit there and say "aww someone had there feelings hurt cause there team lost" but truthfully that was an amazing play I'm not gonna be toxic about it
Mr Drip you’re commenting on a 10 month old comment with shit english, why?
I just stumbled on this today. It's fun to watch and listen again to the broadcasters, two of the best in the business, talking about the play. They were stressing that nobody thought of a run back possibility, but I honestly did. When 'Bama decided to go for the field goal I said to my wife, who just happened to be in the room, "Auburn can win this on a run back." And it happened. One of those truly great moments to relive. Thanks for featuring it.
it was too good to be true I guess

@@tommytimp That's why I don't understand why more teams don't send back a return man on 55+ yard FGs, especially in college. It's damn hard to get a ball up high enough for a college kicker, so I think there are more returns to be had.
@@andrejg4136 IDK if NCAA rules are different, but I'm assuming the reason is because there would almost never be a reason to take that risk on a 55+ yard FG unless it was the end of the half. You return anything less than to roughly mid field and you now have worse field position than if you didn't return it.
Lol
@@tommytimp No, but it's kinda surprising they didn't leave one or two speedier players in given Auburn seemingly lined up in Nascar package for the kick.

It got people who don't watch sports to even freeze for just a moment to see this insane play. Always makes me smile remembering. Sports will always be amazing.
How come college sports crowds are more passionate than professional sports crowds?
Well this was an instate rivalry and whoever won was going to the BCS National Championship
Pro games too expensive to go to for young college kids
it's cause they are tied to the schools live and breath passion for 4-8 years
+PabloCruise91 A professional sports team only represents a city. A college team represents an entire state!
Best ending to a college game ever! I loved the announcers stunned silence. I will never forget where I was when it happened. Amazing! War Eagle!!
Jason Thweatt while that’s good, I love Gus Johnson commentary. Easily the best color commentator ever.
This was the play of the decade!!!
"There's no athletes on the field for Alabama. They got all fat guys." 😂😂😂
Too true tho. All their hogs, and they did their job. Davis' return was the second-tier worst-case scenario.
And who put them there? The guy paid $6 million a year to throw his unpaid athletes under the bus.
@@saabrian You sound fun
@@saabrian it was a hilarious quip from one of the commentators but not a deliberate effort on Saban's part to throw his players under the bus. He had big guys out there to protect the field goal attempt. He thought it was going to be the last play of the fourth quarter so even if his team missed the kick it would be a safe call. No one in their right mind was banking that Auburn would return it the whole length of the field for a touchdown.

definitely too much. not even close to the best game ever. the stakes weren't nearly high enough. a shot at a chance to go to a bowl game? meh...
droidean Stakes weren't nearly as high?
Whenever someone tries to downplay the importance of a good special teams unit, show them this video.
