Over 100 major college teams woukd like to trade for that. " Upset wins over North Carolina and South Carolina on their home fields. 'Nuff said !
Appalachian state has definitely evolved into big time game players and it’s been great to see them come up and while they’re not my team(LSU is)it’s great to see teams elevate their level! You go Mountaineers!
I went to school at Appalachian State in the early 90s. Jerry Moore was just starting to build the program when I got there in 1990. That program has nothing but go up ever since. From the team to the facilities it's definitely a top notch program and continuing to improve.
Lou Holtz is the only one who actually showed Appalachian State any respect. Thankyou Lou Holtz!! While the other two, especially the guy on the right, couldn't and wouldn't realize we were the better team. And the thing that pissed me off the most, say the name right. Its appaLACHian, not appaLAICHan. Get it right
DarkKnight9688 It's all about the coach. if you don't have a coach who's a fit (RR) or you have a coach who isn't mentally strong enough to handle a big program (Choke) these things happen.
when you completely change the style of offense it'll take time, RR isn't a bad Coach but he wasn't fit for Michigan to begin with. one bad year affected the recruiting he got defensively. idk why anyone liked hoke or why he was even considered. they said that he's great with recruiting, it's Michigan, they'd get recruiting already! he really just said shit about how Michigan is great and everyone just ate it up. talking doesn't make up for terrible performance

As proud as you must be to be related to players on that team, I’d like to know what position Blake Elder played on that team. I don’t think Blake would have also been a backup QB if Trey already had one of those spots
This is a game that I will never forget. It serves as a reminder of never underestimating your opponent and always being humble when confronting the biggest and smallest of opponents. Michigan didn't have respect for App. St. that day and thought they were just going to walk all over them.
Granted, that was the best App St team ever. Armanti Edwards, Dexter Jackson, Coco Hillary... they had a bunch of guys especially on offense who could have started for I-A schools. But still... a GOOD Michigan team. Not the joke version perpetrated by RichRod and Brady Choke. A team that had an 8 game winning streak, held Ohio St to 14 points and less than 150 yards of total offense and beat defending national champion Florida in their bowl game. And yet they lost to Appalachian State.
@@beaz3784Let’s not forget that the January 2007 Boise St Fiesta Bowl upset win over Oklahoma kicked off the 2007 college football year! Plus Thom Brennan (one of the announcers for that Fiesta Bowl) also announced this App St vs Michigan game on the Big Ten Network
10 years My goodness how time just flows by. Appalachian State believed in themselves that very day that they can handle and hang with Michigan. If I thought the game was shocking to watch, the ESPN post game Analysis was crazy to watch. Lou Holtz went off script when he mentioned what happens to a team after they lose a game like this. Bitching and moaning I know its cold hard facts, but DAMMMMMMN!!!!!!
I turned on the new-fangled Big Ten network that afternoon just to see what it was about. I watched Michigan score right away and thought this game would be a rout. Then I saw Dexter Jackson convert a 6-yard pass into a 68-yard TD, saw that Michigan's safeties lacked the speed to stop the slants and Armani Edwards, and I settled in to watch. The rest of the first half was one-sided: Appl. State was a LOT better - faster on both sides of the ball. In the second half, Michigan finally took off the blinders, forgot who they were playing, and recovered. Still, Appl. State's speed led to the go-ahead drive. Only a miracle pitch-and-catch by Henne to Willingham gave Michigan a shot. Holtz was right about Appl. State - ignore who was wearing which uniform and just watch the game - was NOT an upset.
Lloyd Carr definitely was sitting on the sun for the fans, but his long tenure coaching Michigan combined with the news of the 2007 season being Lloyd Carr’s final season before retirement explains why he was not fired
App State is a really program and this may always be their signature win. When I was little I put them into what I called my big 3 along with grand valley state in D2 and Mt Union in D3. These teams always seemed to be national champions again and again in the early part of the 2000s. I actually was a Michigan fan after at this time and feared something like this would happen because of Michigan's arrogance and they got a knuckle sandwich. 13 months later it happened again vs Toledo October 11 2008. It nearly happened a 3rd time vs army in 2019. Bottom line because of this nobody fears Michigan stadium or Michigan football anymore and the world especially teams roughly app states size have this group to thank for that.
We’ve come full circle in just a bit over a decade, huh? App State’s back to serious relevance. People are taking this team seriously for the first time since this huge upset! I’m tellin y’all now... something big’s aboutta happen with App!
I am a huge Michigan fan but I give App. State a TON of credit. They were very impressive but in defense for my team they did make something out of a lost season in the end.
ESPN showed no respect to App State when... Michigan didn't just lose the game... App State BEAT them. With two blocked FGs in the 4th, that usually means a WIN
Michigan went through a weird stretch of games over that 2-year stretch [2006 & 2007]. First 11 games of 2006: 11-0. Next 4 games: loss to Ohio St [42 points allowed], loss to Southern Cal [32 points allowed], loss to Appalachian State [34 points allowed], loss to Oregon [39 points allowed. Next 8 games: 8-0. It's like they forgot how to play defense for the 4 games in between the two winning streaks. What happened? And you can't say it was with different players. The same players who produced the 11-game winning streak gave up 74 points in their final 2 games of 2006. The same players who gave up 73 points in the first 2 games of 2007 produced an 8-game winning streak immediately afterwards.
Lou Holtz pretty much sums it up. ASU took it to Michigan's ass from the first play from scrimmage, all the way to the last blocked field goal. The score was close, but Michigan was soundly beaten in just about every category. Their guys were roughed up because ASU was lean and mean up front.....Henne heard footsteps all game long because he kept getting the shit knocked out of him....lousy blocking. Michigan played in panic mode for the better of 3 quarters, and for that they lost.
Incidentally, Michigan would have an 8-game winning streak and beat defending nat'l champion Florida in a bowl game after suffering the haymaker from App St. That was a darn good team the Mountaineers beat, not the joke Michigan became under RR.
I'm from California and a huge fan of college football. There's no question that the SEC is the best conference or at least tied for first with the Pac-10. But the SEC, they showcased a lot of depth in their bowls and since the BCS was implemented, the SEC has won 3 National Titles with three different teams. That's a lot of depth there.
Elitist mindsets due to Michigan being highly ranked and ignorance looking at App State, they even called 1-AA the lower division on this clip. Real college football fans know the only difference between a good FCS team and most FBS is resources and not talent. FCS is still D1 at the end of the day.
They were pissed, Lou Holtz was the only one that kept it real lol. FCS is not a joke division and the only reason why the FBS versus FCS games be so lopsided is because FBS rarely schedule the good FCS schools because they don't want what happened on this day to happen. They often schedule lower-rated teams they know they're superior to, and definitely not trying to schedule a defending champion like Michigan did lol. The top schools in FCS are serious and it only shows that the only real difference between the two subdivisions is money.
Strangely enough, considering how 2007 turned out, had Michigan won out after losing to App State, they probably would have won the national championship.
Michigan would have needed to have every team ahead of them (Michigan had 33 teams ahead of them before week 2) either lose two games or lose one game by double digits in addition to not losing another regular season game to have a chance. Plus only the top 2 ranked teams made the national title game in the 2007 season
@@brav3hearthalo189 True. Both are amazing. Appalachian State did beat 5th ranked Michigan in the big house. Georgia State football started in 2010 and they beat Tennessee, an SEC school, in their own stadium.
What's really weird about that season: Michigan held Ohio St. to 14 points and under 150 yds. of total offense. But they gave up 34 points and 400+ yds of total offense to Appalachian St. I have *no* explanation for that. Michigan had an 8-game winning streak after they got over the shock of the App St loss and beat defending national champion Florida in a bowl game. So I can only conclude that App St was a lot better than everyone thought...
App State has been a massive, big winning football program for years. The team they put on the field that day was probably like an upper trier MAC team. This wasn't the biggest upset in the college football history.
I agree they think here's mighty Michigan and lowly ASU. ASU was as talented ,and more determined ,smarter and a had lot more heart .Michigan was schooled by a better team !
APPALACHIA STATE WAS RUNNING AROUND MICHIGAN ALL DAY. ALSO FACTOR IN THE BIG TEN THAT YEAR WAS FULL OF BIG BACKS. APPALACHIA STATE SPREAD THEM OUT AND MICHIGAN NEVER MADE ADJUSTMENTS TILL 5 MINUTES IN THE 4TH QUARTER
Whooptie do, Michigan did what they were supposed to against a team with a new coach and in the middle of FBS transition. Michigan can beat App 100 more times and they’ll still never live this loss down.
I miss this college football final show. Also since this game Michigan hasn’t recovered on a national level: haven’t won a big ten championship, only beaten Ohio state once, won only one big five bowl game.
The fact that we are three years removed from Michigan's loss to App. St. and UM's inability to rebound from that loss is almost sad................almost. : )
The SEC and the Pac-10 are the two best conferences in college football. Sure, the Pac-10 had a great non-conference resume going 7-7 against bowl teams, but the SEC has the toughest in-conference schedule in the nation.
Dynamic nothing personal, your missing one game on the roster, (App St-34 Michigan-32). There no way around it, the game did occur, it was seen on t.v, newspaper, txt msg, Internet, on the jumbo screen of (Ohio St,)
I think so - and I don't blame him for it. If ever there was a time and place that even someone in his position could use it, this is it, after the biggest upset in college football history.
All these comments and no one mentions the possibility that APP State was better, player for player than Michigan was.(and is) App St is geared to play a modern SEC ACC style game, while Michigan is geared to an outdated big white slow Big 10 approach. It was plain to see that UM was just no match for this type of game. (and still are not.) If it werent for careful non conference scheduling Big10 teams are known for, Michigan would have found this out a long time ago. The Toledos, the Eastern Michigans the Western Kentuckys will not prepare a team that has aspirations at the national level. The modern game is DOWN HERE in the South, not in the rust belt.
In my opinion this is the case of how At any time at during any game Anything can happen. I think it's the case of taking the other team not to serious and have it bite u on the ass.
*DOES ANYBODY HAVE THE FULL GAME OF THIS TO UL???? I NEVER SAW THIS GAME LIVE B/C STUPID FUCKING COMCAST HAD A BLAZING ROW WITH BTN AND THEREFORE DIDN'T HAVE THE NETWORK THE VERY FIRST YEAR IT WAS ON!!!!* (BTW, it was on here at one point by thornsx2, but it was deleted. ;-()
This wasn't even the biggest upset that year. Michigan was "only" favored by 28 points. Later on that year the University of Spoiled Children, playing at home against a Stanford team that was missing it's starting QB and coming off a 1-11 season, twice had a 2-possession lead in the second half but folded like a cheap tent in the 4th quarter, falling 24-23 to a 41-point underdog.
this was a bigger upset, favored teams lose to underdog teams in conference play all the time, this was the only time in history a school from the lower division beat a top 10 fbs school, and Vegas never put an official line on the game so I'm not sure where you got 28 points from
1VC4U they absolutely put a line on this game and it was around the 28 mark. The lines on games tell me more about how big an upset. Hes right, stanford was plus 41
@hollabackitsobi So how do you explain Ohio State, who went to the Rose Bowl as conference champs, doing absolutely nothing against them? What's OSU's excuse? BTW, Florida played pretty well for a team that didn't show up. They had 35 points and over 400 yards of offense, they just couldn't stop Michigan.
even though they blew balls in recent years this was the only time i heard mark may say anything semi-decent about ND usually he just insults and says whatver bad thing he can about Notre Dame. This was a terrific game though.
Think Michigan will be ready to play in that one? Nothig will ever erase what happened, of course, but perhaps a win over ASU would provide some small measure of solace for UM. And if App St should happen to win AGAIN... well, it will be a cold day in he!! before a team from a power conference schedules them again.
In 2005 there was a movie a remake to the classic 1970s filled the long as yard. It's stars Adam Sandler and in the film he says something which is the most ironic line and probly sports movies history. In college, we'd start every season against Appalachian State or some slack Division II team," Sandler says. Kick the living shit out of them to boost their confidence up. This was the truth Appalachian State was Supposed to be an easy when. A game where the game was over by half time and the coaches were ganna play everybody in and Michigan wolverines uniform Even the freshman and the 2nd string players who probly would never play any games for the rest of the season. But Appalachian state was ready to play and they pulled off the biggest upset of the season probably the biggest upset of all time.
even if michigan did make the field goal, they'd be pushed out of the rankings because of the score difference. beating a 1A team by 3 points. they'd then be ranked 50 something or worse now.
"Well, maybe scheduling those teams from the lower division may not be such a bad idea after all." North Dakota State would like to have a say about that.

The SEC and the Pac-10 are the two best conferences in college football.
Sure, the Pac-10 had a great non-conference resume going 7-7 against bowl teams, but the SEC has the toughest in-conference schedule in the nation.
Lou Dolt talks about Michigan "regrouping". Fat chance of that.
2008 was over before it began.
That was the biggest choke of all time. It was great
great game go app state!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now, Appalachian State football is in ESPN.
Listen to the ESPN announcer (not Lou Holtz) make excuses for Michigan!
I like how they say how embarrass michigan should be. But what if the 1-AA team Is better?
Dynamic nothing personal, your missing one game on the roster, (App St-34 Michigan-32). There no way around it, the game did occur, it was seen on t.v, newspaper, txt msg, Internet, on the jumbo screen of (Ohio St,)
today we salute u app. st thank u for shuting up the wolverines OH...IO
Lou Holtz said "bitchin" on national television....WIN!!
I NEVER SAW THIS GAME LIVE B/C STUPID FUCKING COMCAST HAD A BLAZING ROW WITH BTN AND THEREFORE DIDN'T HAVE THE NETWORK THE VERY FIRST YEAR IT WAS ON!!!!*
(BTW, it was on here at one point by thornsx2, but it was deleted. ;-()
I do go to my liked videos
What did he say that makes him an idiot? Did you not hear his analysis? He was spot-on.
You must be a Michigan fan.
The Michigan football program still hasn’t recovered from that loss.
Do they play them again?
How'd that go again?
Now, Appalachian State football is on ESPN2.0
Listen to the ESPN commentator (not Lou Holtz) make excuses for UM!
that was awesome; he should do it more often
FCS teams are actually very good in 2022 all those top 5 schools are definitely scared to play any top 5 in fcs!
Go Big Blue!!! Way to represent the Big Ten...
Go Gators!!!
I never saw this...because I didn't turn on ESPN for a few weeks
Wow 10 years 😢
you know the BCS rankings are a joke when this michigan team somehow made it back to #13 in the rankings
Benjamin the other teams were getting beat by lower ranked or unranked teams
And Michigan after getting blown out next game against Oregon did win 8 in a row. They were in fact back in the rankings when the streak was 5.
@jbmasongator LOL, im a michigan fan(just sayin) but when holtz said Bitchen and Moanin on ESPN LOL!!! classic ESPN Moment there !!!
Give some credit to app st. Back to back national champs and had one hell of a team. Mark may doesn't get it.
@TheChucky4664 add virginia tech losing to james madison to this discussion if you wish ;)
This wasn't even the biggest upset that year. Michigan was "only" favored by 28 points. Later on that year the University of Spoiled Children, playing at home against a Stanford team that was missing it's starting QB and coming off a 1-11 season, twice had a 2-possession lead in the second half but folded like a cheap tent in the 4th quarter, falling 24-23 to a 41-point underdog.
this was a bigger upset, favored teams lose to underdog teams in conference play all the time, this was the only time in history a school from the lower division beat a top 10 fbs school, and Vegas never put an official line on the game so I'm not sure where you got 28 points from
1VC4U
they absolutely put a line on this game and it was around the 28 mark. The lines on games tell me more about how big an upset. Hes right, stanford was plus 41
chris forgione
www.si.com/longform/appstate/
according to Sports Illustrated, there wasn't an official line set on the Vegas sports books
You are wrong, Chris: There was NO line on this game as I was ready to bet the HOUSE
It seems like these guys are making excuses for Michigan as opposed to giving due credit to App St. for a great performance.
@hollabackitsobi
So how do you explain Ohio State, who went to the Rose Bowl as conference champs, doing absolutely nothing against them? What's OSU's excuse?
BTW, Florida played pretty well for a team that didn't show up. They had 35 points and over 400 yards of offense, they just couldn't stop Michigan.
even though they blew balls in recent years this was the only time i heard mark may say anything semi-decent about ND usually he just insults and says whatver bad thing he can about Notre Dame. This was a terrific game though.
they play in 2014?
I thought Lou Holtz was going at 100 MPH with that rant.
And Jim Tressel has been involved in three of those nine losses.
A great victory for App state
Think Michigan will be ready to play in that one?
Michigan also lost to Toledo yesterday.
GOD BLess YOU ALL!!!!!!!
Did Lou Holtz say "Bitchin"? Apparently with the comments below!
It's actually dubbed 'The Hidden 11'
Michigan is App. State's little brother.
He DID!!! @ 3:02!!!
3:02 he cursed in front of a all ages audience
Good
even if michigan did make the field goal, they'd be pushed out of the rankings because of the score difference. beating a 1A team by 3 points. they'd then be ranked 50 something or worse now.
I don't think Lou understood the magnitude of this upset.
lmao lou said bitchin and moanin lmao lou is the shit
i thought the same thing, Lou said "bitching". Can he do that?
"Well, maybe scheduling those teams from the lower division may not be such a bad idea after all."
North Dakota State would like to have a say about that.
3:00.
