  • This is a short epilogue of a two week test I set up for eight different single pedals, looking for one(2) standout to use for double bass set up. Some I had, others were purchased. They are all world class devices - smooth, quiet and basically well made (some obviously better than others), and one did stand out to me for my physical abilities and playing proficiency. Take a look. (BTW, for some reason my Reply will not function or I'd be happy to answer new questions).

    I purchased two Drumnetics because of this video.
    No regrets at all.
    In a similar story: I played two bass drums for 15 years, then switched to a double pedal for 20 years, now back to two bass drums.

    Thanks for doing this video. I have to say, the Pearl Demon Drive sounded the smoothest rhythmically (to me) and looked the as though you were exerting the least amount of effort.

    Love the demon drive, smoothest pedal I have ever used. Best factory settings, always ready to go and reliable as all hell. The circular grip plate is really scratched up but everything holds really well. Carrying case is an instant +1 as well. Honestly the best high end pedal imo. The double pedal works great for friends kits and outside performance, but it also allows me to detach the drive shaft to make two individual single pedals for my home kit (which is double bass) I should mention that I have ever only owned and regularly used two other pedals. A pearl chain drive single pedal(That is, their cheap stock pedals usually shipped with kit/hardware combos), and a mapex 500 double pedal. (Which I used for 3 years)

    Thanks for the kind words. I have found dble bounce to be more my own technique, type of beater used, and head tension then the pedal's action. Having stated that I do find the Drumnetics much easier to control than any spring pedal.

    I haven't played in 15 years but I found this very interesting. I tried so many pedals during my years of playing. The old Ludwig SK was as good as any along w/ the old Camco(?) pedal. But as you pointed out, the SK has many drawbacks whether the studio or the stage is your venue. I saw a pedal once back in the 70s that I believe was made by Cappelle. Very smooth pedal. Axxis came along and promised much but didn't deliver. I suppose when it comes down to it, most pedals are good enough and you go w/ what feels good and is financially rational. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

      Thank you for the kind words. Well, six years later I continue to use Drumnetics and recently got a double long board which feels the best yet. I always knew the system would work well with a long board and I can experience it now. Not a tremendous difference but, for me, a little smoother and more easy to control.

    I'm glad you found the video helpful. Mike and I have discussed, at length, the longboard idea. It'll be awhile before that takes shape, if ever. I have experimented with the idea using some of my own "handy-man" modifications. Definite changes in feel and throw, but nothing outstanding. But, I didn't create a true longboard, either. If you are in the market for a new pedal, contact Mike and try one out. It's just a great pedal.

    The new upgraded TAMA Iron Cobra and speed cobras are the pedals I’ve ever played and just exactly what I look for in a pedal. I love chain pedals, not a big fan of direct personally and the new generation Tama pedals are absolutely perfect for me.

    The company has been working on production options for the new 3XF for awhile now. The new design is incredible. Mike modified my pedal for axle magnets like the 3XF and it is ... there's is nothing like it on the market. It is a velvet rocket to Mars. That's the best way I can describe the action. It literally almost plays itself. I cannot say enough fine things about this device. Hopefully Mike will be able to get it on the market soon.

      Of course, if there was a blackout, there would have been no light at all or power for the camera. In the camera monitor the lighting seemed fine. Obviously the back corner didn't have enough light when I checked it out later but, I figured that was the Speed King and Yamaha which were only in the test for comparison sake, anyway.

      @@rainsong7327 I have not tried the Ludwig. For it's price and features I would choose the Ludwig over the DW in that price range. Honestly, for an expansion spring pedal, I'd save $30 and get the new OffSet single pedal, which I have played, which has more structural and adjustment features, imho. Bear in mind, everybody's physiology is different, and the way one pedal feels under the foot of one person can be very different from the way it feels under the next person. It's all very subjective.

    Mate your good what you are saying is correct .being a naturally fast bass drum player ,I used to struggle to try to make people understand how doubling and trebling with a single bass is different for all cos style is completely different for all .getting the rebound and the feel for your footwork is specific.and when live you can find that your doubles can sometimes be slightly less forceful and not come through the .p,a ,as you get more tired or just because the rythyms are fast and don't show up .anyway I've been stuck with dw .but now see that there's choice and good competition out there , so thanks.

      REFondrums from this video, how would you rank these pedals other than the one that you've chosen? By the way, I do have that speed cobra pedal and I like feel of it. I like chain drive version of the pearl demon drive better than the direct. DW 9000 is also nice one too.

    • @REFondrums
      @REFondrums  9 років тому

      DeDaBlake6 Hard to say. The feel of the Drumnetics is so natural and powerful the others are in another department, really. The BOA has its own action, and came in second, as I mentioned in the vid. The others? The OFF-SET has its own footprint-thing going on and has nice adjustments. The SC has been given it's cam curvature, placing the pedal board further back, enhancing its throw. Not a very powerful pedal, though, for me. The Trick is compression spring driven, very smooth but, felt pretty mono-dimensional to me. The Pearl ... smooth but, nothing outstanding for me. The Yamaha needs better heel mechanism to reduce its wobble and audible chatter. Ludwig would be greatly benefited to reinvent the SK and give it adjustment options. All that being said for me it comes down to springs versus magnets. Magnets win. Especially with the new multi-magnet design.

    'Rare earth' Neodymium magnets are permanently magnetized, meaning they never lose strength. The use of them in an aluminum drum pedal, where they never actually touch each other or anything ferrous, renders that phenomena even more so.

    Hello and thanks for the video. I am looking for a replacement for my older pedals. I can't stand any of them. One of the latest I had was a jojo mayer and it let me down several times, I think it's a really bad pedal(the beater I like) . I use to have a pearl eliminator but it always sounded too heavy, yet fast, and I changed for a dw 5000 single chain, andit felt really good, but still a bit heavy and rough. Then I purchased a cheap Pearl with the flat surface, but again, it doesn't do the job. I play mostly heel down and I lift it only when I need it. I feather quarter notes a lot and I really need something light and fast to be player mostly heel down, with a beater which doesn't have a pointy sound. Can you point me in a good direction? As you probably understood, I'm a jazz player, but the range of the music I play also goes towards funk and heavier music. Thanks in advance!!!

    Would you recommend the off set or the speed cobra for heavier music? I use iron cobra jr's and am looking to upgrade really soon. I have tried the speed cobra and liked it, but I probably can't try the off set unless I took a risk purchasing it. I do like the idea of being centered on the kit, but I don't want it to cost me comfort. Would you say the off set plays smooth like a cobra, or heavy like a dw? I don't like the dw feel. Thanks

    • @REFondrums
      @REFondrums  10 років тому

      I've never seen pedals as genre associated. Style of music and style of playing drums are two different things. Find a pedal that works best for your physiology and style. "Heavy" music would seem to necessitate mics on bass drums, anyway. That being said you can hear the general impact of the beaters on the pads during the video, for my style of playing. The Drumnetics and the BOA had greatest impact volume. The others are pretty neutral. Just changing the beater on your pedal can make a huge difference, though. The adjustments on the OFF-SET probably has a feel closer to a DW 9000, than the SC, the way I have it set, but changing the settings could bring it closer to the lighter feel of the SC. Personally I like the centered nature of the OS and would keep it before buying a SC dble.

    Any thoughts on the Demon Drive vs. the Drumnetics pedal, specifically? I noticed you didn't really address the Demon Drive very much. I just ordered the Demon Drive, but after I watched this I am wondering if I should send it back, because the Drumnetics pedal seems to be the most comfortable/natural to play. Also, any reason for not including Jojo Mayer's Sonor pedal in your review? I think it would have been a relevant pick. Maybe you should do part two of this video to include, both the Jojo Mayer Sonor pedal, and the new Drumnetics pedal??? [:

      I don't recall knowing about the JJ pedal when I did the test, but for the most part it's an expansion spring system like most all others, with a concentric cam. Nothing unique about that feel for me to invest in it, had I known about it. I got the DD because of its reputation, basically. It's a nice pedal, but having owned a few Pearls I never found any of them as comfortable as Tama's or Yamaha's for expansion spring pedals.

    • @jmb92555
      @jmb92555 8 років тому

      +Ryan Alexander Bloom I think that's a good point. You can take advantage of the momentum of the springs in certain situations.

    • @REFondrums
      @REFondrums  8 років тому

      +Michael Boykin I don't see how a spring can have momentum, per se. It is constantly pulling back, in and out, in and out, fighting against itself. Your foot would be the source of momentum, dealing with the action of the beater off the head. If a spring can have momentum I would have to say, just from a physics point of view the 3XF, with positive direct force in both directions, would work up serious momentum. As far as chain or direct drive, that's a matter of preference, of course. Direct drive is a much better action for me.

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom 8 років тому +2

      You are right in that the spring does not, in itself, have momentum. The combination of a spring and a weighted lever, the beater and shaft, does carry momentum like a pendulum kind of. That momentum makes playing easier in many situations. I have based my entire approach around it, as have most people. Direct drive totally makes sense, but I just don't like it... no good reason.

    • @justinlee2268

      Ryan Alexander Bloom The only direct drive I’ve tried is the pdp concept. I didn’t want to spend alot of money on a more expensive pedal and hate it...

      The production model will have fewer flux lines, and they will be thinner, too. Looks nicer, imho. I think I commented elsewhere that the design of having the footboard inside the heel, rather than outside, proved to be a better feel when it was designed. The aluminum is high grade and can withstand something like 11-18k lbs per square inch, as I understand it, so strength is not an issue.

      The test board has 1/2" mouse pad material, neoprene rubber. Besides that you can try self-adhesive weatherstripping, kitchen mat material, silicone pads, rug pad, all kinds of things really. You can take a small tom hoop and head and place these kinds of materials behind it, against your board and screw the hoop down to it. You can also use egg crate foam for that. I can't say I have found anything that actually simulates the feel of a bass drum head but, for practicing these materials get close enough.

    • @REFondrums
      @REFondrums  10 років тому +1

      All top-of-the-line pedals have good bearings. Some pedals swing back and forth more because of other factors like their spring mechanisms joined to axle and cam systems, etc. All pedals nowadays are very smooth in action, even low end pedals. The issue is return systems - expansion springs, compression springs, or in this case magnet repulsion, which I like the best. It feels the most natural to me.

    • @machielveldkamp
      @machielveldkamp 10 років тому +2

      REFondrums I do have to say something about the bearings... I changed my Tama Speedcobra bearings a while back. Thought they where nice bearing but instead, Tama used cheap chinese crap bearings. So I changed them with a nice Japanese skateboardbearing and they are flying again!
      If any of you want a smoother action from your pedal, you can buy VERY nice bearings everywhere for under 50 bucks. I got mine with a discount so I paid 20 euro's. That's a very cheap upgrade to any pedal out there. Even the cheap ones!

      Hey man, don't knock it before you try it. main difference is no slave rods, it's all direct pedal and double chain. No reaction time latency. Plus, they come apart at the center just incase you want just one or to have two bass drums farther apart. Pedals themselves are also adjustable and capable of being converted into cocktail kit pedals (See Roy Wooten)! Alas, I could just be biased. I am a Mothertone/Sleishman Artist, after all!

    • @REFondrums
      @REFondrums  8 років тому

      True, I never tried one. In my research, though, I felt the OFF-SET had better adjustment features, and certainly a better price, which is why I got one and used it for years. That is how I grew to love the bi-lateral design compared to typical dble pedals. But, again, they are all spring driven. Magnet actuation is just a different propulsion system and for me is superior. Going back to springs is not an option.

    It looks like the Trick was not doing the sequence of notes as well. Seemed to lack the sensitivity for quieter notes. I was considering getting one of those; now I'm not so sure.

    • @REFondrums
      @REFondrums  10 років тому

      Let me be honest. After all I read I figured the Trick would win the test. It is well made, has compression spring mechanism (which I wanted), and has a very smooth feel, but yes, it does have a rather monofeel to it. No matter how I set it it remained very mechanical in nature. It just didn't have an organic feel to it like other pedals in the test. I suppose for blast beats that is fine, but for articulation, not so much. Not for me, anyway. I believe the test bore that out. The Drumnetics has both the organic, natural feel, and can be used to whip up some serious speed, as well. But really, any good pedal can nurture speed. Speed was not my main concern.

    • @mrnegronis
      @mrnegronis 10 років тому

      I notice you didn't have the Jo Jo Mayer Sonor pedal in the test lineup. That might give you the sensitivity you want. Then again, I have seen other videos on YT showing it's mechanical problems. One guy had one where the board was moving sideways. Sonor probably didn't put bearings on the heel hinge. Another guy had one where the heel hinge was so tight the board was unplayable. It's a shame Sonor skipped some of the details.

    • @REFondrums
      @REFondrums  10 років тому

      The JJ pedal is not a unique device, save for its portability for packing. But its mechanics are found in older, conventional pedals with that type of cam system. Plus, I didn't even know about the pedal when I did the test. Had I known, I might have included one. Seeing the same vids as you, I'm satisfied I didn't.

      As I mention in the video each pedal was tried in every position the pedals allowed. The Pearl was set up in its optimum position for me. Actually, though it's been awhile, I thought the Pearl WAS set up in their long board position. If not, it was simply because it was not as good as the regular position, for me. In actual fact, having messed around with each pedal they all felt better to me in the positions they were in right out of the box.

    I think by ''diving board effect'' you mean the back part is a thin flexure?

    • @REFondrums
      @REFondrums  6 років тому

      Yes, the basic action of the pedal was formed at the heel, like a diving board, which, of course, has springs back there, not up front like ll other pedals using springs. In the case of the BOA it was the shape of the foot board at the heel and flexure of the board as a result which caused the action. A cool design but, one that afforded a flaw, which was the back end of the foot board could crack under pressure when re-positioning was engaged and the heel re-tightened. Apparently DW chose not to try redesigning it to keep it on the market. Bob Gatzen had a ice idea, though. There were other problems as well, like overall quality. Mine had issues with alignment caused by poor drilling of parts (not centered). The pedal had potential. Just one of those things industry can do - drop things and that's it.

    what do you want for the speed cobra?

  • @andyham6094
    @andyham6094 5 років тому +1

    This is a cool test for light speed and dynamic BUT there’s a lot more to a pedal than just this test. Having power along with clean accurate hits is a big factor. It might be clean for one of the pedals in this test but playing a live show and really stomping the pedals while maintaining these clean strokes is a whole other test. Some pedals feel great playing soft and fast and quick like this but when you try to play with power and volume with fast quick accurate strokes it’s not as great. It all depends but just saying just this tapping little test doesn’t say much. Also everyone’s technique and settings are all different of course.

    • @REFondrums
      @REFondrums  5 років тому

      I have never played any differently at home, studio, or live. I do what I do. I don't change anything. You should not have to. Good sound techs should protect a player's style. I don't play for mics. Mics should support what I play. For me, the test is based on what I do, regardless of environment. Honestly, I would not stomp on a pedal if someone paid me to do so. Like you say, the pedals were set for my feel. Some people might max out the tension system on each pedal. That is what they like. Others might barely place tension on the system. I tend to like most pedals I have used very close to what they are set at out of the box. Considering the number of different genres Drumnetics get used in, I have to say they are pedals with an apparent wide range of satisfied users. I continue to highly recommend them.

      Yeah, Gatzen's beater is a real nice design. A real big thump and It had the foam around the cylindrical striking element and took away latent buzz that a lot of beaters create if you "bury" the beater, as I generally do. Oddly enough, the beater seemed really proprietary because changing beaters made the pedal feel very different in a negative way, for me.

    • @REFondrums
      @REFondrums  5 років тому +1

      They are long gone from production but, apparently, because the form of the foot board at the heel end is very thin, it could crack when tightened down. The correction was to make a thicker foot board at the back end but, that changed the action and feel of the pedal in a negative way. They decided to scrap the project. That's my understanding.

  • @reddieseled
    @reddieseled 9 років тому

    I still find the lighter basic designs such a a Pearl P120, Iron Cobra jnr and various other brands (mapex, premier, yamaha..) work better for fast playing. One of my all time favourites was the Pearl P1000, awesome sturdy pedal. I also think it's important to find a pedal with a base plate of sorts, that makes such a difference in not wasting energy through the pedal chasis.
    I do have Iron cobras from my heavy drumming days, but I'm always looking for cheap basic pedals on ebay and then turbo charging them by loosening the bearings up and adding bushings, lube etc.
    It's worth mentioning to try and find a pedal that has solid bearings in the footboard pivot (Pearl, Tama) OR double chains that stop the side to side tortion of the pedal, again wasted energy.
    Best pedals... Pearl P1000, P120, P2000 (more money), Tama Iron Cobra Junior, Yamaha 700.

    • @reddieseled
      @reddieseled 9 років тому

      In practice, the new Mapex p600 looks like a cracking little pedal for the money! Also, no annoying toe stops. I hate those things. I like to be able to slide all the way up and down the pedal because right at the top you can really play some delicate stuff.
      I have to say hand on heart the worst pedals I have come across are Gibraltar and Dixon (same design) That was the avenger series though (or was it the predator?) the one that looks like it will slice you foot up, well it will and it does and it squeeks and wobbles like a mother.

      @NJGuerrilla 9 років тому

      Zachary Williams I have the newer 3FX drumnetics trust me from drummer to drummer you won't want to play anything with a spring ever again... With emphasis on "Ever Again" It has no "Lag" like spring pedals nor will you ever get get the bounce that a chain has if you are playing super fast. Only thing I had to get used to was that they don't have as much resistance as conventional pedals because I'm so used to playing with my spring maxed out. But once you get used to the tension being a little lighter than normal its all she wrote. I encourage you to give on a try you will be glad you did.

    The honest observation I have? Big name drummers have tried his pedal. They love it. They are also under contract to the big companies. It's sad, but in today's marketplace, having "name" endorsers and an advertising budget to promote those endorsements is what sells something. Drumnetics, despite having a world-class pedal, doesn't have the "name" endorsers yet, or the big budget. That will come at some point, though. Just a matter of time.

      Nice pedal in design for a spring-based, direct drive unit. Quite expensive for what it is, as far as materials, though. It is greatly lacking in beater angle adjustment compared to even less expensive Tama pedals. That is a big ?!? many people have commented about.
      The coil underneath is kind of weak, as its predecessor is. Of course, feel is totally subjective.
      With the exception of the sliding cam adjustment, it really has nothing different to offer.

    • @ronaldmiller3096

      Yes and no. It really boils down to personal preference. Music is very subjective, and every drummer is different, so their preference for single or double bass drums, is really about how they want to express themselves. For example, I prefer double bass drums, but use a single bass, with a double pedal because it's more convenient, and takes up less space on stage.

    What did u like better between the demon drive and the speed cobra?

    • @REFondrums
      @REFondrums  8 років тому

      +Larry Tate For whatever reason I have never been comfortable with Pearl pedals. They always felt stiff to me. The DD is smooth enough but, next to the SC it felt rather sluggish but, that isn't the real difference, and it is minor, especially considering the DD' direct link can help with note articulation. The SC takes advantage of the severe cam angle and longer board and it really creates a terrific feel. That said, as you can hear in the video it doesn't present much punch. The Cobra Coil spring is useless. The new model looks as though they made the spring a little more beefy, and the new beater head would create more impact. But, neither provide the natural feel of the Drumnetics. Nor the impact, by design. The Coil cannot really be used to push the board back up too much because it is a chain link. The chain would be constantly losing form and if you dance on the pedal board any gap between your foot and the board could really effect the entire action of the pedal. So, I doubt the new spring does much, either. I'm surprised Tama has not introduced a solid link version.

    • @larrytate1657
      @larrytate1657 8 років тому

      Cool, thanks for the info. I might grab myself a double speed cobra. I need the double pedal and I know drumnetics may be a while yet on that. I have the double mapex falcon now though and I like it a lot. Also have the DW 9002 and it's not for me. It's smooth but the feel is heavy and it fatigues my muscles much quicker than my Falcons do. I'm going to trade them in for the double speed cobra and then decide what I want on my kit and what I want on practice pad between the Falcons and the sc.

      I put toe stops on mine. Just took two pieces of aluminum angle bar and affixed them with Goop. Works well. Actually, now that I think of it, I haven't done that on the dble pedals and don't seem to notice any problems. If I remember correctly the only pedal of those in the video that comes with a toe stop is the OFF-SET. The rest do not. I also affixed stops on the Yamaha, which were pieces of knurled cym boom arm, also affixed with Goop. Added a little weight to the board which also worked well for me.
      As far as price, I haven't checked lately but, the Drumnetics compared well with the other American made aluminum pedals. It was less than the others.

      I'm glad you like your pedal. The purpose of the video was to show the differences between action systems and why I chose the Drumnetics. It would be great if drummers could feel the centered action of a Drumnetics with its magnetic propulsion system. It's just another gig altogether. Like your Premier, 99% of all pedals are expansion-spring driven. I've owned many; far more over the years than what is displayed in the video. Some are better than others but, even beginner's pedals today have good action. I've used them on practice set-ups, and even recorded with them. They might not be "road worthy" but, they function better than pedals of decades ago. The Drumnetics might not be for every drummer. No pedal can be. Still the feel of those magnets working, even better with the new 3XF design, is the most natural thing you will experience under your foot. A double pedal is soon to come, based on demand, and owning the previous version I know the new design will be incredible.

      Using dangerous creatures to name merchandise or sports teams, etc, is an old practice now. It's basically breast beating in the marketplace. From a Christian, biblical, world-view, though (and I realize it is not a poplar view), using association of blatant evil to name anything is, to me, an ignorant practice, given the information we have in the Bible of these entities and the deception and destruction they cause. Glorifying evil is popular today. Just a sign of the times.

      I dig you. I still think it's inexcusably inconsistent to pooh-pooh something with the word "demon" in it and not something with the word "cobra" in it. After all, any fool can see (and prove) that cobras harm people for real on a daily basis, and demons ... don't. One would hope that a person concerned with other people being harmed would object to the thing which is demonstrably harmful rather than something which cannot be demonstrated to even exist, much less hurt folks.
      Maybe that's just me. ;)
      It's crucial to note that, in other mythologies, "demons" aren't universally evil. That's a characteristic of the Abramic faiths, which dismiss as evil any differing ideology; any spirit not God (or apparently one of his angels) is a "devil". The kitsune of Japan, for example, is a demon, called unequivocally that, but is merely a trickster who is often benevolent. Interestingly, the word "demon" itself stems from the Greek "daimon", which simply means "spirit". It only takes on its negative context in Early Modern Christian theology. To the Greeks, diamones could be helpful as well as harmful.
      In fact, the Bible doesn't refer to demons much at all; it mentions "devils" and "evil spirits", but doesn't really use the word "demon", at least not the King James Version, with which I am most familiar.
      If I might be bold, I suggest you look into history, anthropology, and linguistics before passing judgment. ;)
