In this video I am demonstrating the DW DWCPMDD Machined Direct Drive Bass Drum Pedal. This is an amazing, almost futuristic kick drum pedal that feels fantastic under the feet and makes for a great kick drum sound.
If you have never checked out a Direct Drive kick drum pedal then I suggest you really should. Direct drive pedals have a direct link between the footboard and the beater assembly which takes away the need for a traditional cam. There is absolutely no lag time from when the beater hits the drum head to when the pedal goes back to it original position.
This DW Direct Drive Pedal is machined from solid aluminum and comes with a lot of fantastic features. It has a perforated solid-aluminum footboard with a contoured heel plate and an interlocking Delta hinge. There is also the Tri-Pivot swivel toe clamp, Drive linkage and cam with Threaded Bearing Technology, vertical sliding spring adjustments, and a Control beater with adjustable weights so you can achieve your perfect impact.
This is one great kick drum pedal - thanks for watching!

Yes, it’s expensive, but it’s beyond worth it. I’m 45 and I have arthritis in my ankle, and I do roughly 100-120 shows a year. This pedal makes that possible for me, and helps me play like I did when I was 25+ years younger.
In the beginning of the video you said it was " casted out of solid aluminum " just wanted to clarify after reviewing this on other videos and from the designer at DW this pedal is MACHINED out of aluminum and he stresses that it is not casted hence the name "machined direct drive bass drum pedal". To be casted would mean liquid metal is poured into a "cast" and cooled this pedal is CNC machined from a solid piece of aluminum.
Sorry for being picky but just wanted to clarify for someone looking to spend a grand on a pedal
+Jeff B You have the soul of a machinist!
more like machined out of seperate blocks of solid aluminum and assembled
The parts are cast out of solid aluminum. Of course they need to be connected.
The pedal uses extruded aluminum parts with as little CNC machining as possible in order to cut costs and maximise profit.
yes, very observant asshole
For all those bagging on this pedal here, I own two of them and I think it is an amazing pedal. For reference I will let you know I also own a Trick pro1V Bigfoot double and a Pearl demon drive direct drive double both of which are also direct drive. This pedal takes the cake easily over those other two pedals and many others I have owned... it is expensive yes, but you pay close to the same price for a Trick Pro1V or an Axis and I don't see anyone complaining about that... the only thing I do agree with is that this pedal should have came with a Better case, for this price you absolutely should get a hardcase for free with the purchase. Other than that I have literally ZERO problems with this pedal, like Nick says here in the video DW really thought of everything on this one. Some of the features unique to this pedal that you can not find in other pedals that are absolutely AMAZING are: 1. the hoop clamp - it is absolutely wonderful the way this pedal adjusts to the Round shape of the bass drum hoop like Nick points out in the video here. You will never put you pedal on and have to readjust it because it is slightly slanted due to not being perfectly in the middle. This saves set up time allowing you to throw the pedal on very quickly with margin for error. this in combination with the rubber feet on the clamp protects your bass drum hoop from getting scratched like no other pedal. Usually you would have to use a bass drum hoop protector for this but not with this pedal. 2. This pedal has markings on EVERY adjustment you can make on the pedal. Some other pedals do have some markings on SOME of the adjustments but I do not know of any that have markings on EVERY adjustment. The Trick Pro1V comes close but it does not have a marking for the spring tension which is very disappointing because it is the MOST important setting. 3. Because of these markings you are able to PERFECTLY match your master and slave pedal when playing the double because you can see exactly what each adjustment is set at and mirror that on the other pedal. This annoyed me on the trick, it always seemed the two pedals were ALMOST exactly the same but I could never get the spring tension exactly the same due to the lack of markings there which as I mentioned is literally your most important adjustment on any pedal.
Chase Steinberger When i first purchased these pedals that very same thing ran through my head.. "Are they really worth the $$$?? What's so different about these than the rest of them out there????" Well, I am very impressed and glad to have made the move...only complain??????? The case. They should really come with a good quality flight case not a gig bag.other than that, these pedals are awesome!!!!
Love your review ! I own a pearl demon drive , hate it . I am going to purchase this with the chain . Have you played it ? Thanks ! Great review !
An Axis pedal isn't "close to the same price."
@@scottgarvey7011 I just purchased the tama dyna sync direct drive, and can highly recommend. Awesome piece of gear
tell us more
This is absolutely hands down the best Pedal I have ever owned. Thanks Brent at Sweetwater!
1:48 don't sound too convinced there
I just got this pedal in an awesome trade only 250 bucks outta my pocket for what I traded him and I gotta say I liked this pedal so much I sold my 9000 pedal for 200. Feeling very lucky!
The double is like 1000 dollars. You pay 1000 for a double pedal and don't even get a hard case? The least DW could do is make a hard case, not some unprotective bag.
Way too much. I'd recommend the Tama speed cobra. Way cheaper and come with a case.
+Edward Pignataro IV man I just bought the Tama 2016 new speed cobra double pedal and it's the best fastest smoothest most powerful pedal I've ever played. WAYYYY better than the DW 9002's for my feet at least. The action and throw on the new speed Cobras is insane. Plus I love the new accu strike cobra rubber beater that comes with it. Super durable beater and a nice punch to it, kinda in between felt and wood. Best pedals on the market IMO 2016 Tama speed Cobras. I'm gonna buy the 2016 new Tama iron Cobras as a back up.
any pedal besides this one is a better option. Save your money.
+Andy Ham i love the new beater too! I actually just picked it up! I kept the old model and just bought the new beater. Been trying to upgrade my drums as much as I can to keep playing! I got a dark horse kit with all paiste giant beat cymbals.
I would like to try the pearl demon pedal some time. Looks nice! Sticking with Tama though!
Hey Guys... PDP has a direct drive pedal too. Not as fancy as the new DW but is very nice for like 1/4 of the price!
This is my second one. I have one at home on a set of DW's and one on my gig set of yamahas. Awesome pedal !
Great demo Nick! Thanks for the plethora
of information. There's been a lot of fanfare, news & debate on these pedals.
Imho I think these pedals will replace the speed king in the history of percussion equipment.
I just bought a 5000 turbo too. I understand it performs pretty well....worth a try
Got the double and love it
A very cool pedal Nick.
Never ending cutting edge technology by DW
pfft nothing but ideas ripped off Tama
the name of the pedal is mdd 'machined' direct drive, so why would you say in the first 10 seconds of the video 'cast' out of aluminum?
I happened to get my feet on one of these.... when I was visiting guitar center. I reaaally loved the feel. would had bought it, but didn't feel in the mood to pay more than half a grand for something that took less than 100 to make.
brdane axis or trick. Cost less then these and much better
brdane ...Look at the DPD direct drive pedals. I think you will be happy you did.
Everything DW is expensive because they build the products in USA. Unlike some of the other drum brands
I will listen to this guy explain anything.
I'm tempted on buying the red paint footplate!!!! I wish they would of made it red, white, and blue!!!! 🟥⬜🟦🇺🇸🦅
If I had the money to get this pedal, I would! We only live once!
Finally. A pedal with a centered beater.
He forgets to mention this is one of the most expensive pedals on the market
i believe "the most expensive pedals" ... this pedal makes Axis or Trick pedals look really cheap.
Like butter? I thought everything was like silk here.
I played the double pedal version earlier today. And it did feel like butter. It was so smooth when I played it.
@@mikepzep it better for $1200.
Still looks amazing, even in 2022! 🥁😁
So glad I discovered this before getting the DW 9002.
how are you enjoying your pedals? Iñm thinking about getting them over my 9002...
@@jesusbruschi9579 I actually got the 9002. It felt just as responsive and is very adjustable. One person told me that once you play a direct drive it is really hard to go back to chain drive because the DD spoils your foot. On the other hand, this person said, if going to a DD after CD it is not so hard.
@@CountrySingerWannabe thanks for the quick response, man. I appreciate it.
@@jesusbruschi9579 No problem, youtube notifications make it easy. Also, to clarify, if you get the DD and play it for awhile it will be harder to go to CD if say the kit you have available has a CD.
@@CountrySingerWannabe I see. I usually take My pedal everywhere anyways, but I get your point. And I'm also planning to have both, 'cause I do like the feeling of the CD, but I Guess it's a lot easier to play metal on a DD. Thanks for your sharong your thoughts
What the advantage is of a hinged soleplate over a pivoting solid soleplate I have never been able to figure out.
Been using Dw 9000 since 07 never had a problem and play 3 weekends a month sometimes more pedal still looks and feels new thought about the new DW DD but just something about the look I can't get past so I figured I'll get the new beaters and leave well enough alone ,just not sold and read some reviews cats didn't like it ,and what a price for that kind of money should do the work for ya lol
Premier 252s had direct drive and Spring tension done from your drum stool in the 70s,and also a one piece footplate, like the axis, which is a great pedal,Joe Morello no less, made dw make a pedal with a one piece footplate..
The thud that thing made when all the weights were in the beater.
I have the Dyna Sync pedals they is awesome
They are waaaay better than these pedals
@@dcmastermindfirst9418 why do you find them better? Could you please elaborate? :)
Today I reciewed my DW 5000 accelerator (wasn't happy with speed cobra at all cause it's not speed maybe only cobra! ) and I feld in love I'll keep it for ever! :) Even if the 5000 model is on the edge with price. Before I did believe to this guy about Speed cobra cause every staf he review "is amazing gooood and perfect" ! .....
Just got mine!whooo
Awesome!
Is there a newer version of this pedal ? I heard the pedal plate flexed.
Super cool explanation mate. I´ve liked very much the video. Just covering all information I needed!
That’s the beauty of Nick D’Virgilio. He’s a fantastic drummer, singer, guitarist (check out Looking for Answers by Spock’s Beard. He plays drums and guitar), and he’s never arrogant. I really wanna meet him someday. In June, my family and I are actually going to go to Sweetwater in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
what do you think the best peddle is for playing Bonham foot triplets like on Good Times Bad Times ?
If u have a half decent pedal and work on you bass drum technique your fine
This pedal took many features from the Czarcie Kopyto pedals.
Those are amazing pedals..I was able to play around in a buddies set... he has had em about a year..n loves em.. kind of pricey tho!!
Cool!!
Greetings friend. I like the reviews you do.
I apologize for the question.
Can you tell me what brand and model are the shoes you use in this video? They are very pretty.
Thanks, best wishes.
John.
1:08 - "DW thought of everything when they made this pedal." Not true. They may have considered every aspect of adjustability, but not before Trick did around 10 years ago, and not before Pearl about 3 or 4 years ago. Let's give some propers here.
Let's not forget the Ludwig Speed-King - made in the late 1940's, perfected in the Early 50's ???? Hello !. Want an Endorsement of how good they were - John Bonham always had them. Nuff Said.
What does he mean by "lag between the footplate and the beater" ? To me it suggests a time delay between footplate movement and beater movement. How would that be possible with ANY drum pedal ?
That's exactly what it means. Sometimes when I do fast double kick runs with my chain drive pedals the footplate comes back up faster than the beater and the chain sort of scunches up a bit. It's mostly just user error bc my double bass chops still aren't great yet but that kind of thing would never happen with direct drives
I'm not sure I trust the pedal height adjustment (2:40). You want the srew to be real tight because if it loosen and slides you might use bad words... If the problem occurs I would put a rubber stoper. Otherwise the features look great!
onuj. You say that there is no drum covers out there that use this pedal.
Try The Warning foo fighters pretender cover.
Why wasn't Nick playing on a whole kit when he did this ?! Did DW ask to show it on just a bass drum?!
Can you switch these to lefty?
Every looks so nice... except the bag... I prefer the plastic hard case.
That return lag mentioned is exactly what can be expected from this pedal. The adjustment moves from bad to worse. It can be proven and this pedal will fail every test when compared in speed to other pedals that have their geometry in the correct order. DW will in the future admit this has been the exact opposite to the way pedals should work. An an inversion of engineering.
Do you think the DW 9002 is good? I was thinking bout that one or tama speed cobra
Can you explain a little more? Why is it a bad design?
Yes please do explain what the hell you are talking about...
I'll send $5 to whoever counts how many times he says.... kickdrum
57
What should he call it.
@@CountrySingerWannabe drum kick lol
is the pedal (Chrome) or(Black Nickel) Finish
Those little round felt beaters that twist off suck. They fall off. Lol. No biggie though I use the original beaters but still for over a grand one would think that's the last thing that would happen. And too be honest anything DW makes is solid. Well made, of course you're gonna get a lemon sometimes but that goes for anything or anyone for that matter! Lol
WHAT ARE THOSE?
Is this better than the Trick Pro1-V?
i believe not... its super hard to find DW pedal used to play super fast (i personally have never met not even 1 video). while trick pedals have been proven to be able to play as fast as possible . (and trick pedal can be converted to 2 single pedals or 1 double pedal)
So I could buy an excellent used drum set, or a brand new pedal? Hmm.
you could buy a whole ass superstar brand new, or a double of this.
Is it like the pearl demon drive?
That is probably a good choice too.
No, because the demon drive isn't overpriced.
Dyna sync is way better than that
can anyone tell me the peddle that John Bonham used ? or the best new peddle to play foot triplets like Good Times Bad Times ?
Bonzo used a Ludwig Speed King
I recommend the DW MCD pedal over the MDD.
The hateful and triggered comments are pretty sad and pathetic. Sure the pedal is very expensive but some people who appreciate a cool piece of craftsmanship, and have the means, don’t mind spending the money. There’s a big difference in the cost to manufacture from cast components made in China vs billet machined components made in the USA. Any company has the right to charge whatever they want for their product. The comments here suggest many of you have socialist tendencies. That’s pretty terrifying actually. If you don’t see the value in it then don’t buy it. Go buy something else and be happy. There are countless great options on the market. The bottom line is you have the right to an opinion and the right to voice it, but you’re acting like you also have the right to demand that a private company charge what YOU want to pay. I have news for ya... you don’t.
I don't like the spring being "inside" the area of the foot board. Also, for the money it's still a stretch spring where Trick's pedal has a compression spring.
You can buy just the beater on amazon for 30 bucks
ryan averna that's exactly what I've done.
Keep the camera on the pedal vs the constant zoom in - zoom out!
For DW being sooo expensive they never include a hard case.
The dw8000 came in a hard case. Neither it nor the dw9000 are not better than a dw5000.
so there is a spring.
Love DW but the cost is way too much
If its cast out of solid aluminum how could it be called the machined direct drive pedal???
9:07 HA!!!
Why is more expensive the the Trick Pro I-V?
Possibly more adjustment options and part of it is the name
I'm gonna make one out of wood.....could take a few runs, but would be fun
Its very nice, although....$500???? No thanks....I'll pass.
should be worth it though. that pedal is made to last through an apocalypse lol
So are the new updated 2016 speed cobra for 429.00 for a double. I got dw 9002 and they also have been reliable.
+Larry Tate good advice.
1,000 dollars for double
YAMAHA FP9500D """THE BEST""""
00:10, it's not "cast" out of aluminum rather it's "machined" out of aluminum on one of their "HAAS" C.N.C. machines. Good information though on the pedal.
The footplate and heel plate are machined, not the whole pedal.
I think I'll stick with my trick pro V doubles...
Has anyone heard of an electronic (servo assisted) drum pedal for people who have weaker knees to play for longer periods?
Played this pedal. It's awesome but I can't afford it.
John Good mined the aluminum out of ancient mind shaft found deep in the Uganda forest.
I don't like the raised heel plate. I wish they would have made it long board similar to Trick or Axis.
$1000, really why not $2000??... save your money... I do love DW, I own a 9000, purchase it from a friend for $200, but truly any pedal if you get used to it, is good for you, I used to have the 5000 series and it was amazing. You can buy a bunch of hi-end cymbals, or even a new drum set for that price, that shows you how much DW start seen musicians as an $ $ing and not as people that hardly make it.
I bought the Double version from Sweetwater and did not like it. Staying with my Axis A21 Laser. Does not even come close to my Axis. Very heavy feel compared to my pedal. tried every adjustment even took weights off the beater. someone else may like it but just not happening for me so sold on ebay.
where are the drum covers??? this pedal has been out for months and no youtube drummer uses them? wtff
They cost $500 for the single and $1,000 for the double, not exactly cheap for a non endorsed drummer to afford.
NathanDrums No, I completely agree with that statement but it's normally the death metal drummers who I expected to bust-out covers using them. Kind of disappointing, isn't it?
+onuj yeah it is, I know jay Weinberg of slipknot USED TO use them, but said he didn't like them. It seems the only company that actually has people using their direct drive models is Pearl.
NathanDrums really? I thought Jay Weinberg only used 9000 series. Where did you get that info?
Bass 24?
I don't feel like this guy loves this pedal..
I'm not sensing real enthusiasm. If you see his speed king reissue review, he likes the pedal and you believe it. I'm looking at pulling the trigger on one of these used but I'm hesitant. I'm disappointed the speed king hasn't worked out for me. I loved one as a teenager but I'm not finding the love. Any suggestions would be appreciated, I'm open to any. Cheers
0:52
I'm yet to see one DW guy switch to these yet, anybody have?
Aaron Spears uses this pedal.
Ah ok. Way too expensive imho. Prob would just go for a George Kolias signature pedal at this point.
Larry Tate it is expensive. Which is why I don't want to get it. But the way the pedal feels is amazing.
Yeah I think uptake is due to the phenomenal price. The are as refined as you'd expect to dare to ask that sort of money.
Larry Tate He's a DW endorser but Conner from Beartooth uses them.
Dear God for a time machine, to put a pair of these in front of Bonzo to play with... 😳
trick pro 1v or this?
Paul Fuller this!
Trick
between buying a pedal that only the tail of the brand DW and buy an Axis I prefer the Axis of course, same settings , and more affordable , I'm sorry the fans of the brand.
"Cast out of solid aluminum" 😆
are those better than axis?
no
tb banshee definitely!
Yep DW does it again... ANOTHER extremely over priced product that doesn't function better than of its competitors 1/3 of the price. Sometimes worse and more expensive too.. I really don't know why some drummers endorse DW, totally selling out..
Nevertheless, the pedal is around $1000 and beater is $30. Im going to put that $30 dollar beater on my $200 iron cobra :)
At least the beater was well priced DW.
Cheers.
I would never buy this, but DW's 9000 and 5000 models are amazing, and pretty fairly priced.
Yeah they rly bank on the psychology of more expensive must be better. Don't buy it, I prefer my 400 dollar pedal over my DW 9002
Jerome BMG I got the dw 3000 double pedal
Mike BMG I agree, the beater is the only thing that is priced right about this MDD pedal
I'll put it on my 100 dollar Gibraltar direct drive.
long boards?
Sure are!
Edward Pignataro IV sure are not you mean. they might be fractionally longer than 9000 footboards but these are by no means longboards
DW wants to get paid! Lol
Esse deixa o satanás drive no chinelo.
WAY TOO EXPENSIVE....
You can do better with an old tama peddle from the 1980's or Ludwig.
se4821....Yep, I'm still using my Ludwig Speed King direct drive pedals I bought in 1979.
Pearl Demon Drive was there first. Have a double.
Did not like the sound, there did not seem to be any DRUM sound/tone/resonance only the beater slapping head. Also the comment solid steel was suggested at 0:54.
review or sales pitch?
Why does it cost 599€?
Because
1. It's a direct drive, they are more expensive
and
2. Come on, what do you expect from DW?
Cause DW believes if they charge more people will believe it has to be better. Just like they do with their DW 9002, which I own and is 600 bucks but I perform better on my 400 dollar mapex Falcons. Don't fall for it.
Kickdrum sounds like a cardboard box
corne van der wal the ironic thing is.. it's also DW just like the overpriced pedal
@Stork Legs You can tension the heads for the sound you want.
why is it so expensive? I can get an iPhone 10 for 1000 dollars and it does so much more than that
Have you ever tried to play kick and slide on your iPhone?
Czarcie Kopyto are the king of Direct Drive pedals. AND ship better than theseAAAAND are better in every way.
why is this better than DW9000? Because it is aluminum and looks cool? I wonder! especially with the price tag for the double!
am i alone when i say it looks awful and gody?
TheRadrussian1 I think that too
