The first time I heard that solo was at the show Earls court Friday October 28, 1994 I was a very lucky 20 year old The Floyd did 4 nights at earls court to end the world tour from 26th until the 29th October 1994 and played Dark side of the moon in its entirety in the middle of each show. great reaction guys for other live pink Floyd performances try live in Venice from July 89 also their mini set from Knebworth music festival 1990 , I think that version of comfortably numb is even better and run like hell is also top notch. and of cause you cant forget live in Pompeii 1972.
Welcome aboard @Alex From AndyReacts. I think I heard the studio version of this in 1989. My neighbour had just seen their gig (at Lahden Suurhalli, Lahti, Finland) and played me some music of Pink Floyd.
A little off-topic: I remember back in time 1984 at secondary school we once drew album covers and our arts teacher did "The Wall". It was the first time I saw this album. (I think I drew Electric Light Orchestra "Three Light Years" compilation cover art.)
1980, I was 12 and my FAVORITE Aunt just bought The Wall on vynil...I knocked on her bedroom door and asked to listen after Another Brick in the Wall pt1. She let me in if I promised to be quiet while it was on...I thought it was amazing. Surprise to find out she got tickets for 3, and she was taking me. She took me to the show when they came to Philly, told my mom we were going to the beach for the day😄😄😄 with her boyfriend. I had to promise NEVER to tell my mom, but it came up during Xmas one year, we all laugh about it now.. Great reaction, can't wait until you do the FINAL CUT.
There are guitarists who "shred," guitarists who play music, then guitarists who play great music, and somewhere far, far above them is David Gilmour. This could well be the best guitar solo ever recorded.

Perhaps. However check out the rendition from his Royal Albert Hall concert " Remember That Night " in 2006. You may change your mind. This is a version with David Bowie sharing lead vocal and Crosby and Nash singing back up.
I met David Gilmour in 1984 back stage at a concert in Hollywood Calif. He gave me a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. All of us fortunate enough to have seen this show live were in a TRANCE.... MESMERIZED the entire show... as you can imagine. We walked out saying.... What did we just witness? That was out of this world incredible. The Red Fender Stratocaster he used for this concert in the Guitar Collector World is ....PRICELESS
Unquestionably the best concert performance of any band in history. After all these years, I still get chills. And if you think this was sublime, check out their closer from this concert, Run Like Hell. It’s transcendent.
I saw that show live sitting in VIP. That was the most amazing show I've ever seen! When he plays the solo, we didn't want it to end. We were deeply and totally enjoying every last seconds, almost in tears knowing too well that it was ending.
Excellent video, guys. I'm a 58 year old USMC Veteran. Good luck with college- you both obviously have a good head on your shoulders. I was very lucky growing up. We had literally nearly 100 great groups at one time to listen to.
This guitar solo is historical. That was phenomenal and so emotional, splendid and extremely powerful! I was there, that specific day, I was really young and everybody after the concert was speechless and still in trance. We were walking in silence, thinking about this phenomenal concert, looking at the stage sometimes just to remember this moment forever before we leave for good. I also remember the smell of joints, especially in front of the stage (yes, that was of course forbidden but ... Pink Floyd is Pink Floyd, right? Some people couldn't resist). Now, when what the video and when I listen to this guitar solo, I always remember that the sound was everywhere around us, it was unreal, like dreaming. It was so impressive and so imposing, like ... the massive, colossal, powerful, and majestic machine of Pink Floyd, directly connected to your soul! And I can tell you that we were all vibrating! I will never forget this concert in my whole life. I remember all the details, smells, sensations, emotions ... everything. It was unreal and magic ... it's PINK FLOYD!
I love it when young people appreciate good music, whatever its genre. I was also good to see you two reacting as I did in my youth, the head nodding and grimacing is universal and timeless. Keep up the good work from a 63 year old in the UK.

I keep coming here just to see Andy enjoying This band. That passion ... The way you look at your friend is the way I look at my friends listen to Pink Floyd and I always feel like they don’t fully get it the way I do. I believe that to love Pink Floyd the way we do we have to have a totally open soul. I just want to cry every time. Because it is just so overwhelming. You have that Andy.

I jus commented on the Pompeii video that between what woulda been coursing thru my veins and the immersion of sight and sound if I woulda been somewhere around the plane crash ending On the Run I would likely still be there to this day in a cosmos coma.... Did get to see Roger opening night of his last tour at the KFC Yum Center and all it lacked really was Dave.... guitarist was terrific, but nobody touches Emperor Strat imho... idc what anyone says Gilmour is my favorite #1 guitarist of all time.... #1-was the disco ball as mind-blowing as I’ve always imagined.... #2-how amazing was Run Like Hell with all those people “Run, Run, Run, Run”... ???????????????? Yeap! Been at one of their shows in the previous tour, right after the Momentary Lapse of Reason and i totally agree with you. Best show ever...unforgettable. Especially the Run Like Hell intro at the end. P.S.: They were using a "quantophonic" (or something) sound system and the sound was all over the stadium... oh man...
OMG....every time I see David Gilmour live, I think to myself: "How is this even possible!" The best guitarist of the world, the most beautiful voice combined in one person." Every time he blows me away. His voice, his guitar-play just go straight to my heart. I've heard many times Comfortably Numb live, but have never seen this version. OMG, you have to get me from the floor, I am totally totally to-tal-ly in a different world right now. Is this heaven?
headphones are nice, I don't deny. but when listened to on top-notch speakers like Polk audios, something super clear and crisp with thunderous subwoofers that is what does it for me. feeling the music vibrating through you at high decibel is the best.. my best case scenario, 1988 in Philadelphia JFK colosseum momentary lapse tour. the best hands down!
@@01stenny I prefer to listen to Floyd with headphones on cuz I want all other sounds blocked out. That being said my first time hearing Dark Side of the Moon was at a friends house. He had just bought a Fischer Quad system and had 4 Bose 901's, one in each corner of the room. Talk about blowing your mind!

I liked the old headphones that fully covered your ears, and of course dsotm was perfect for them..don't care for the new type bud headphones..crap sound, no bass.. just my opinion.
Thanks man I'm 67 and grew up listening to some of the greatest music in 60's& 70's. It makes me feel good that your generation can appreciate where we are coming from. I have often played music from my era to younger generations and the reply is usually, That is so much better than the stuff we listen to. We got John Lennon you guys got Justin Beiber.
This is one where those of us who were teenagers long before you got it right. They were (are?) amazing and still relevant today. It puts a huge smile on my face at age 58 to see the two of you enjoying this as much as I still do. I saw them twice, once in 1987 and again in 1994. I'm truly sorry they're not touring in any fashion today, you truly deserve to see them live

I love that the guy on the left said, it always makes you tear up. THAT is how you know a true PF fan. I have seen PF live, Ive seen DG live and I have seen RW live. Of course the original band is and always will be best because of the magic they have in collaboration. However, i have teared up or outright cried every single time I have seen them. In my humble opinion, no other band can measure up. Enjoyed your appreciation of this video of CN One of my favorites.

Stevie Ray Vaughn didn’t have to sing. He spoke to us through his soul and his Stratocaster. Les Paul created the electric guitar and guitarists like Gary Moore and Joe Bonamassa are maestros of their Les Paul Customs.
In the early 90's I had the joy to see Pink Floyd live in Clemson. Watching it on a screen pales in comparison to live. Thanks for taking me down memory lane.
My older brother introduced me to his favorite band PF back in the 70's. He's 8 yrs older than me. He got to see them live back then. No idea how many times he's seen David Gilmore play that song. I can see how younger generations appreciate how amazing they are. Greatest always stands the test of time. 👍👌👏
Yo. Shout out to Nick Mason. Turned 75 today! The Pulse tour was amazing to witness live. Saw it in Tampa and Orlando. I'm so glad that it's recorded, both so the masses can enjoy it, and I get to re live it. Awesome...
I saw it but preferred the previous tour. Pulse for me was indoors, this venue I think, but the other was Wembley stadium and they had more effects (big inflatable 🐖 pig with car headlights for eyes dancing above the crowd, a hospital bed on cables heading towards the stage), fireworks and the light pods floating around the stage (on cables, not actually hovering. 😊).
They actually edited the solo down by about 3 minutes. The full solo is out there on youtube. The 2 'helpers' you referenced are Guy Pratt on bass and Jon Carin on keys. Guy has been with Floyd/Gilmour since '87 and has played on all of his tours and albums since. Same for Jon, only he tours with both David and Roger. He also appeared on Live 8 reunion. He probably has more inside knowledge about the 2 Floyd big heads, and to his credit he's not dishing out the dirt. This version of the Numb solo is fantastic and probably the best properly recorded version out there, but I'm hesitant to say it's the best version ever. There have been some incredible solos over the years, some of which were played on David's solo tours, particularly in '84. And for sheer drama, my favorite in person viewing of Numb was in 1980. Blew my young mind when David appeared on top of that wall. There isn't a lot of professionally produced film of Floyd concerts available. It is a shame, but by the same token the word of mouth and the bootlegs are what pumped up their mythology. That said, you really should watch Live at Pompeii. Features the young and ambitious Floyds without extra musicians. That's my favorite version, just the 4 of them playing Echoes with grit and beauty. It's required viewing for any Floyd lover.
Very jealous of you seeing them in 1980. I was reading Pete Townshend’s (The Who) autobiography recently, and he was recounting a tale of going out on a date with the actress Theresa Russell, for which they decided to catch The Wall. He said something along the lines of ‘’Gilmour’s solo on Comfortably Numb that night will stay with me for the rest of my life'. Perhaps you were at the same gig?! I saw him a couple of years ago at the Royal Albert Hall, London. Was stood no more than 15 feet away from him. Damn near tore my face off. Amazing. :)

@Wendy Beacall - Calm yourself... Pink Floyd is not a "blue grass" or "unplugged" band... They used "state of the art tech" of their time... Yes auto-tune can be misused and is abused, but don't act as if Pink Floyd were not "tech friendly". Your comment seems a bit too much "romantic".
Anybody out there that went to the Haden Planetarium to see the Floyd show? Circa 77-79. Just as any Planetarium, seats back, looking at the stars and universe, listening to the most quintessential drug music ever.. Their concerts were ABSOLUTELY INSANE!! Remember those days well, ;( I wish I could transport myself back to those days! Ah to be young again!
Guy Pratt was a great fill in for Roger Waters on Bass....John Carin was a great support keyboards with Richard Wright...Dick Parry did the sax...Tim Renwick was co-guitarist & Gary Wallis was percussionist...kikass show..loved when it came out. Very emotional song no doubt. 😥
@AndyReacts Guy Pratt at the Bass and John Carin at the Keyboards a part of the Pink Floyd Family. Love them. Backing Vocals (Ladies) are not that good at that Tour. They were much better at The Delicate Sound of Thunder Tour.
I love watching when people react to this version. I saw them do this in Gothenburg, Sweden, just a few weeks before this recording. It was an open-air event, so the mirror ball rose up out of the audience, and the thousands of light beams were reflected onto the low clouds overhead. That moment, just as David Gilmour takes the solo to a whole new level, is one of the most awesome moments I have ever experienced. The bass guitarist is Guy Pratt. Although he is not a member of Pink Floyd, he has played on most of their albums and tours after Roger Waters left. He is married to Rick Wright's daughter and has also played on most of David Gilmour's solo albums and tours, and is now playing with Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets. The extra keyboard player is Jon Carin. He has also played om most Floyd albums and tours after Roger left, then on both David's and Roger's solo tours.

I was at earls court........what a show. Before the ball opened it was shining an unbelievable amount of points of light all over the stadium and myself and when it opened it was almost a religious moment 😊
The “ball” opened above me and my buddies in the “Horseshoe” at OSU Stadium in 1994. The Wall came out when we were all seniors in high school and we couldn’t afford to go to any of the 20 shows they toured to in 1980 so we never got to see Floyd with Waters but hey, the memories of 94 will do.

I was there at Earl’s Court in 1994 with friends. The wide-angle views in the video do no justice to the impact of the light globe in the finale. During the main performance it was hidden in black drapes and only lowered for the outro solo. It was staggeringly bright and throwing out a lot of heat. There was a fair bit of generated smoke in the arena which accentuated all the light beams darting around it. If anyone in the audience was on acid, they’re probably still having flashbacks now.
I have been a big Pink Floyd fan since the first time I heard DSOTM back in 1973. Sadly, I only saw them play live once during the Animals, In the Flesh Tour at Ahaheim Stadium in Southern California. In the afternoon, before the concert was scheduled to start in the early evening, a single dark cloud slowly moved across the sky near the stadium. The crowd grew quiet as it became clear that, the only large rain cloud in the sky for miles, was going to move directly over the stadium. It was early May, so the rain wasn't cold, it was pleasantly cool. The crowd was hushed as the rain began to cover the Anaheim stadium in a fine mist. We were damp rather than soaking wet. As quickly as it arrived, that single dark cloud moved away and vanished in the distance. As sun began to shine, a large rainbow as appeared over the stadium. It was very visible and impossible to miss in the now clear sky above us. The crowd was in amazed, because nature had provided her own awesome light show just a few hours before Pink Floyd took the stage. Many people thought it was good sign that the show was going to be great. How could it not be, after an opening act like that? The concert was fantastic. The sound and the light show were excellent. The band played great. There was a big screen with that strange animated movie playing on it. There was a large floating pig balloon overhead. There was a pyrotechnics show that eventually set the pig on fire. And then of course, there was that spaceship like cloud and that rainbow. What a day!
Ok, no worries. I was a bit of my face at the Earl's Court gig in London (Pulse '94) smoking Thai stick and other trippy Afghan resin with friends and I probably shouldn't have. Still loved the gig but spaced out a bit at times! Haven't smoked anything now for over 4 years.
@@PaddyDixieTheMinerva82 was also there and brought my tin of herbals but didnt need them,EVERYONE was toking and it was being passed about the whole time (2nd block from the front,earls court) and a damn good time was had by all,but NO ONE was prepared for the utter magnificence of the drama and emotion that was about to unfold. Absolutely unforgettable for this 65yr old gig veteran.
Congrats ! You saw the absolute best live performance with Pulse!! I probably heard the studio version hundreds of times on our local "play 4 Floyd songsevery 8 hours". Hard to believe but first time I heard the Pulse version was when I bought a 99 cent cassette . After the song was over there were sounds of a lawn mower and birds and it made everyone at work just break out laughing!!
Great analysis about the guitar solo where you said he takes you to the place you get to on the record and then smashes through and takes you on a journey. I liked that.
Great choice. Comfortably Numb is always one of their best live songs. "Run Like Hell" is also right up there. No one does a light show like the Floyd! Andy, good to see you rocking the Zep shirt. I love seeing people 30-40 years younger than me wearing Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd t-shirts! Keeps me young at heart. And Alex, you're right on. Some guitar solos completely fit with the flow of the song and some are just, well, good term: mental masturbation. David Gilmour is a master and kind of follows the B.B. King style; saying more with one note than most musicians can say in a whole song. Many thanks. Always love the awestruck shots of you both.
Other big bands have caught up with the grandiosity of live show effects but I think I'm right in saying that Pink Floyd were the first band to start doing big expensive shows with loads of lights, lazers, film projections, fireworks and massive props. They were definitely the first to have big inflatable puppets and flying dirigibles. I went to see Roger Waters doing The Wall and it blew my head clean off!!! It started with a fucking plane crashing into the stage and exploding!
I just love to see the young folks building an appreciation for the music of my generation. I've seem Floyd live twice, Animals and the wall... great shows from a truly great band! I saw the Roger Waters "The Wall" show, and it was spectacular and very much like the original.
@@progmeup I meant these performances. They took a few songs out because they played the entire Dark Side Of The Moon. I saw them in Raleigh, NC and On The Turning Away was performed.
Saw this in Vancouver '94... sat next to soundboard, and the mirror ball was nearly right above me. I've been to/worked at over 600 concerts, and that show is in my Top 5. Absolutely. By the way, the "Pulse" DVD originally had a blinking light on it. Mine is still blinking !!!
I've loved Pink Floyd since the 60's (yes, I am THAT old) and it's a real delight seeing people enjoying their music for the first time. Seeing your reaction I caught a little of the magic I first had way back then. The adage 'music is timeless' is so true with their work. I just read a couple of days ago that David Gilmour is auctioning off most of his guitars including the "Black Strat" for charity. When asked if was going to have a hard time letting some of those go he replied; "Nah." I don't think we will see his likes again, at least not in my life time! Just a real class act! That all said, it was cool watching this. The first time I saw this, many years ago I had the same fear that the solo would not measure up. Like you, I couldn't get the smile off of my face!

There is a song in the concert called "Sorrow " that is Amazing! I have the DVD and have watched it so many times. Everything is just done superbly. Check out Sorrow, Run Like Hell, Wish you were here.
Sadly the video is cut after that song. Because after it, there is Run Like Hell, which is the last song of the concert. I think, those 2 songs should be played together.

The video actually doesn.t do the “Glitter ball” - moment justice. I was @ Parken (Denmark national stadium) on Aug 25 1994, and when the Super Troupers hit the ball, the entire world exploded into small glowing dots, so You felt like You were floating amongst the stars. That was a truly magical moment. And even though I had ingested neither drugs nor alcohol, I still left the show high.
Can never get enough of them but watching you 2 young guys listening and sharing it confirmed its timeless beauty ... you dudes brought me tears of joy ... thx !

It's so amazing watching reactions to music I grew up with. I was a teen in the 70s. There was so much amazing, diverse and incredible music then. I've been to 54 concerts, 4 last year and I plan on going to many more. 🎼🎶🎵🎶

Around 1983, my 15 yr old brother took up electric guitar. He then started album collecting from Rush, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin & Pink Floyd...one group at a time, in order of release. One day he dragged out his boombox & played this album for our 60 yr old mom. He came out & flipped the cassette over for the 2nd side. I can still see her sitting at the kitchen table, bobbing her head & flipping through her Woman's Day magazine. This ended up being her favorite song. Great video y'all!
Thank you so much for reacting to this. I was in high school here in North Carolina when this song first came out in 1979. I remember it well. My girlfriend and I at the time loved attending concerts. It was one of the things we loved doing together. My wife loved concerts as well during that time. There were a huge number of wonderful groups at the time and concerts were not very expensive to attend. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Boston, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Triumph, 38 Special, Foreigner, and many others. I can not describe to you what a wonderful time it was to be young then. We were happier, relationships were closer, life was more carefree, and the music was spectacular. My heart just aches that young people will not get to experience life as we did as teenagers in the 70’s/80’s. Again, thank you so much for posting this video. It was a wonderful treat.
There are few bands that sound as good or better live than they do in studio. Floyd is one of them. You'd think they wouldn't considering how complex and layered their music is. But the fact that it is, is a tribute to their perfectionism. That solo can be a seperate song all by itself. BTW, those lights were absolutely blinding live. You can see how it destroys the camera lens. It was as if you were being blinded by the sound and power of the guitar. Hair raising! There was lightning and thunder in the air over Soldier Field in Chicago that night which added even more to the fury and spectacle. Truly a memorable night. FYI, Roger would normally sing the 'hello' part but Rick and the young backups were a pretty good substitute.

I would say *historical* event now looking back on it. btw, the floyd light show is another whole discussion. they literally set the standard for all other big touring bands that came after. Whether in studio or in person, these guys were the truly the complete package.
@fred bloggs oh yeah... the background sounds and voices come at you from all around the stadium. Not just from the front like most concerts. I was up in the stands at soldier Field, and you could literally hear the sounds of clocks ticking and whispers coming from over your shoulder. Floyd!
Seeing you 2 jamming out to this has instilled hope in me about this generation's love of music. Hopefully in about 50 years your grandkids will be jamming out to The Floyd!
I was there, 6 rows back and remember vividly looking over my shoulder at the mirror ball and back at David Gilmour as the ball opened up and the incredible solo was just keeping us in that moment. I can't watch it without tears rolling down my cheeks by the end of it. And that's 26 years later!! I'm so glad there were no phones waving about everywhere.
I hope I didn't comment on this before but I can only say that the expression on your faces at about 10:27 says it all. And, as can be seen there were really no bad seats at a PF concert. They include every part of the arena. Great reaction. Loved watching with you!

@John Allen Yes you are right!! We just haven’t figured a way to have two headsets going on at once that are synced together while also having the computer recording the sound. I’m sure there might be a way but we just haven’t had time to fully get it yet, but I hope you know I agree 100%, he will not hear Echoes without a headset, THAT’S for sure!!! 😁
I saw the Pulse tour performed at Pittsburgh's 3 Rivers Stadium in 1994. My youngest brother had to hold his head together during that solo. 25 years later it still brings tears to my eyes.
The harmonies between David Gilmour & Richard Wright (RIP) were ALWAYS immaculate!! Just listen to the song Echoes (both album and Live at Pompeii versions) as an 'early' example of how those two were meant to play (& sing) with each other! I remember my reaction first time hearing (then seeing) this song, and it gave me the biggest smile seeing both of your reactions! Indeed, they knew how to kick this song up to an ethereal level (it was amazing before, but we just reached omnipotent status with this!!). Add to that the 'spectacle' of their stage show, and you have an experience like no other!! Great video guys!
While its great that younger folks are digging this music, and are stunned by the performance, this is only a fraction of the experience. As good as these performances have been documented, they barely compare to the real live experience. The Floyd tours after Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall were beyond belief sonically. They played at volumes bands are no longer allowed to perform at. Gilmour's guitar for the Animals tour was like a laser cutting through the mix. Recorded Floyd (especially the studio stuff) was nothing like live Floyd. The live energy was a 10-fold difference. Unfortunately, recording technology hasn't figured out how to capture performances without loosing that dynamic range, so the only way to get close today is with some of the better tribute bands.
Even tributes don't get it close to the old 70's Floyd concerts. The Animals tour had David playing his most aggressive guitar to date... Even by todays standards, his playing on the Animals tour was jarring. Sheep being a point in question.... There is No band today that can unify 80,000 people and emotionally move each and every one of them. This song brings tears to my eyes every time I watch it. It is like listening to a masterpiece no one can touch. This is absolute perfection. The greatest solo ever played
I was at their very last show in the United States at Giants stadium in 94. Upper deck by the far goal line. A ways away. I was in college and I took my father who used to own a record store. By far this is the best spectacle for a concert I've ever seen. The ball rose from the middle of field by the mixing boards. They had the flying pigs. You should React to the video not just the audio. The songs are fine but it's all very choreographed. I saw this showv twice but the second time they played Dark Side in its entirety. That was a treat and very cool. Watch it.
My dad saw them live on the Pulse tour in Tampa, FL. May of 1994. He’s been to various rock concerts throughout his life but said there was absolutely nothing like Pink Floyd. An experience he’ll never forget and I am envious of!
I do love to see all of you young folk really appreciating the Floyd. I went to my first concert in Brighton, England in 1968. I was 14yrs old. So pretty old now! I was at a free concert in Hyde Park where they played a song called "Eclipse" which turned into "Darkside ".
May 29th, 1994 Ohio State University. It doesn't feel like 25 years ago.One of those nights you can never forget. The huge disco ball didn't come out of the ceiling, there is no ceiling. It rose up at about the 30 yard line of the north side of the stadium. It was beautifully amazing!
I saw Pink Floyd on twice, one time was on this tour at the old foxboro stadium( open air, where the New England patriots use to play)and I remember Gilmores solo echoing through the nitetime air during this. Plus everyone was in a happy state of mind 🤪. And the big spinning disco ball was so mesmerizing, the solo was sorta background noise. Then it flowered, got very intense. Felt like you wanted to jump out of your skin. Lol

A little off-topic: I remember back in time 1984 at secondary school we once drew album covers and our arts teacher did "The Wall". It was the first time I saw this album. (I think I drew Electric Light Orchestra "Three Light Years" compilation cover art.)
1980, I was 12 and my FAVORITE Aunt just bought The Wall on vynil...I knocked on her bedroom door and asked to listen after Another Brick in the Wall pt1. She let me in if I promised to be quiet while it was on...I thought it was amazing. Surprise to find out she got tickets for 3, and she was taking me.
She took me to the show when they came to Philly, told my mom we were going to the beach for the day😄😄😄 with her boyfriend.
I had to promise NEVER to tell my mom, but it came up during Xmas one year, we all laugh about it now..

Perhaps. However check out the rendition from his Royal Albert Hall concert " Remember That Night " in 2006. You may change your mind. This is a version with David Bowie sharing lead vocal and Crosby and Nash singing back up.
I met David Gilmour in 1984 back stage at a concert in Hollywood Calif. He gave me a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know.
All of us fortunate enough to have seen this show live were in a TRANCE.... MESMERIZED the entire show... as you can imagine. We walked out saying.... What did we just witness? That was out of this world incredible. The Red Fender Stratocaster he used for this concert in the Guitar Collector World is ....PRICELESS
Unquestionably the best concert performance of any band in history. After all these years, I still get chills. And if you think this was sublime, check out their closer from this concert, Run Like Hell. It’s transcendent.
I saw that show live sitting in VIP. That was the most amazing show I've ever seen! When he plays the solo, we didn't want it to end. We were deeply and totally enjoying every last seconds, almost in tears knowing too well that it was ending.
David Gilmour can play with more emotion and passion with one string than most other guitarists can do with six.

This guitar solo is historical. That was phenomenal and so emotional, splendid and extremely powerful! I was there, that specific day, I was really young and everybody after the concert was speechless and still in trance. We were walking in silence, thinking about this phenomenal concert, looking at the stage sometimes just to remember this moment forever before we leave for good. I also remember the smell of joints, especially in front of the stage (yes, that was of course forbidden but ... Pink Floyd is Pink Floyd, right? Some people couldn't resist). Now, when what the video and when I listen to this guitar solo, I always remember that the sound was everywhere around us, it was unreal, like dreaming. It was so impressive and so imposing, like ... the massive, colossal, powerful, and majestic machine of Pink Floyd, directly connected to your soul! And I can tell you that we were all vibrating! I will never forget this concert in my whole life. I remember all the details, smells, sensations, emotions ... everything. It was unreal and magic ... it's PINK FLOYD!
I love it when young people appreciate good music, whatever its genre. I was also good to see you two reacting as I did in my youth, the head nodding and grimacing is universal and timeless.

I keep coming here just to see Andy enjoying This band. That passion ... The way you look at your friend is the way I look at my friends listen to Pink Floyd and I always feel like they don’t fully get it the way I do. I believe that to love Pink Floyd the way we do we have to have a totally open soul. I just want to cry every time. Because it is just so overwhelming. You have that Andy.
Every time I watch this, I always think one thing: "Human beings (this little species who can't even get our shit together) are capable of doing that."

Did get to see Roger opening night of his last tour at the KFC Yum Center and all it lacked really was Dave.... guitarist was terrific, but nobody touches Emperor Strat imho... idc what anyone says Gilmour is my favorite #1 guitarist of all time....

Every time he blows me away. His voice, his guitar-play just go straight to my heart. I've heard many times Comfortably Numb live, but have never seen this version. OMG, you have to get me from the floor, I am totally totally to-tal-ly in a different world right now. Is this heaven?
Gilmour's 2nd solo here is a greatest mankind achievement since invention of fire.

Matter of fact, The Dark Side Of The Moon was recorded with the intention of being the best album to listen with headphones.
headphones are nice, I don't deny. but when listened to on top-notch speakers like Polk audios, something super clear and crisp with thunderous subwoofers that is what does it for me. feeling the music vibrating through you at high decibel is the best.. my best case scenario, 1988 in Philadelphia JFK colosseum momentary lapse tour. the best hands down!

He had just bought a Fischer Quad system and had 4 Bose 901's, one in each corner of the room. Talk about blowing your mind!

Thanks man I'm 67 and grew up listening to some of the greatest music in 60's& 70's. It makes me feel good that your generation can appreciate where we are coming from. I have often played music from my era to younger generations and the reply is usually, That is so much better than the stuff we listen to. We got John Lennon you guys got Justin Beiber.
I graduated from H.S in 67 in L.A., so I'm a tad older than 65 but....YIKES what a ride. I was 18 in the summer of love, living in California.
This is one where those of us who were teenagers long before you got it right. They were (are?) amazing and still relevant today. It puts a huge smile on my face at age 58 to see the two of you enjoying this as much as I still do. I saw them twice, once in 1987 and again in 1994. I'm truly sorry they're not touring in any fashion today, you truly deserve to see them live

I love that the guy on the left said, it always makes you tear up. THAT is how you know a true PF fan. I have seen PF live, Ive seen DG live and I have seen RW live. Of course the original band is and always will be best because of the magic they have in collaboration. However, i have teared up or outright cried every single time I have seen them. In my humble opinion, no other band can measure up.

My older brother introduced me to his favorite band PF back in the 70's. He's 8 yrs older than me. He got to see them live back then. No idea how many times he's seen David Gilmore play that song. I saw it but preferred the previous tour. Pulse for me was indoors, this venue I think, but the other was Wembley stadium and they had more effects (big inflatable 🐖 pig with car headlights for eyes dancing above the crowd, a hospital bed on cables heading towards the stage), fireworks and the light pods floating around the stage (on cables, not actually hovering. 😊).
I was at the Tampa Stadium show too. Best concert of my life.
They actually edited the solo down by about 3 minutes. The full solo is out there on youtube. The 2 'helpers' you referenced are Guy Pratt on bass and Jon Carin on keys. Guy has been with Floyd/Gilmour since '87 and has played on all of his tours and albums since. Same for Jon, only he tours with both David and Roger. He also appeared on Live 8 reunion. He probably has more inside knowledge about the 2 Floyd big heads, and to his credit he's not dishing out the dirt.
This version of the Numb solo is fantastic and probably the best properly recorded version out there, but I'm hesitant to say it's the best version ever. There have been some incredible solos over the years, some of which were played on David's solo tours, particularly in '84. And for sheer drama, my favorite in person viewing of Numb was in 1980. Blew my young mind when David appeared on top of that wall.
There isn't a lot of professionally produced film of Floyd concerts available. It is a shame, but by the same token the word of mouth and the bootlegs are what pumped up their mythology. That said, you really should watch Live at Pompeii. Features the young and ambitious Floyds without extra musicians. That's my favorite version, just the 4 of them playing Echoes with grit and beauty. It's required viewing for any Floyd lover.

Very jealous of you seeing them in 1980. I was reading Pete Townshend’s (The Who) autobiography recently, and he was recounting a tale of going out on a date with the actress Theresa Russell, for which they decided to catch The Wall. He said something along the lines of ‘’Gilmour’s solo on Comfortably Numb that night will stay with me for the rest of my life'. Perhaps you were at the same gig?!
I saw him a couple of years ago at the Royal Albert Hall, London. Was stood no more than 15 feet away from him. Damn near tore my face off. Amazing. :)

Anybody out there that went to the Haden Planetarium to see the Floyd show? Circa 77-79. Just as any Planetarium, seats back, looking at the stars and universe, listening to the most quintessential drug music ever.. Their concerts were ABSOLUTELY INSANE!! Remember those days well, ;( I wish I could transport myself back to those days! Ah to be young again!
Guy Pratt was a great fill in for Roger Waters on Bass....John Carin was a great support keyboards with Richard Wright...Dick Parry did the sax...Tim Renwick was co-guitarist & Gary Wallis was percussionist...kikass show..loved when it came out. Very emotional song no doubt. 😥

I was at that gig! Great to see the Floyd are still being appreciated by a new audience.
I love watching when people react to this version. I saw them do this in Gothenburg, Sweden, just a few weeks before this recording. It was an open-air event, so the mirror ball rose up out of the audience, and the thousands of light beams were reflected onto the low clouds overhead. That moment, just as David Gilmour takes the solo to a whole new level, is one of the most awesome moments I have ever experienced.
The bass guitarist is Guy Pratt. Although he is not a member of Pink Floyd, he has played on most of their albums and tours after Roger Waters left. He is married to Rick Wright's daughter and has also played on most of David Gilmour's solo albums and tours, and is now playing with Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets.
The extra keyboard player is Jon Carin. He has also played om most Floyd albums and tours after Roger left, then on both David's and Roger's solo tours.

I saw Pink Floyd live in Paris in 1986. You cannot ever experience anything like that in life ever again it was a turning point in my life.....
I was at earls court........what a show. Before the ball opened it was shining an unbelievable amount of points of light all over the stadium and myself and when it opened it was almost a religious moment 😊

The “ball” opened above me and my buddies in the “Horseshoe” at OSU Stadium in 1994. The Wall came out when we were all seniors in high school and we couldn’t afford to go to any of the 20 shows they toured to in 1980 so we never got to see Floyd with Waters but hey, the memories of 94 will do.

I was there at Earl’s Court in 1994 with friends. The wide-angle views in the video do no justice to the impact of the light globe in the finale. During the main performance it was hidden in black drapes and only lowered for the outro solo. It was staggeringly bright and throwing out a lot of heat. There was a fair bit of generated smoke in the arena which accentuated all the light beams darting around it. If anyone in the audience was on acid, they’re probably still having flashbacks now.
Love the way the whole stage just changed colour effortlessly. Magnificent stuff
I have been a big Pink Floyd fan since the first time I heard DSOTM back in 1973. Sadly, I only saw them play live once during the Animals, In the Flesh Tour at Ahaheim Stadium in Southern California.
In the afternoon, before the concert was scheduled to start in the early evening, a single dark cloud slowly moved across the sky near the stadium. The crowd grew quiet as it became clear that, the only large rain cloud in the sky for miles, was going to move directly over the stadium.
It was early May, so the rain wasn't cold, it was pleasantly cool. The crowd was hushed as the rain began to cover the Anaheim stadium in a fine mist. We were damp rather than soaking wet. As quickly as it arrived, that single dark cloud moved away and vanished in the distance. As sun began to shine, a large rainbow as appeared over the stadium. It was very visible and impossible to miss in the now clear sky above us. The crowd was in amazed, because nature had provided her own awesome light show just a few hours before Pink Floyd took the stage. Many people thought it was good sign that the show was going to be great. How could it not be, after an opening act like that?
The concert was fantastic. The sound and the light show were excellent. The band played great. There was a big screen with that strange animated movie playing on it. There was a large floating pig balloon overhead. There was a pyrotechnics show that eventually set the pig on fire.
And then of course, there was that spaceship like cloud and that rainbow. What a day!

Ok, no worries. I was a bit of my face at the Earl's Court gig in London (Pulse '94) smoking Thai stick and other trippy Afghan resin with friends and I probably shouldn't have. Still loved the gig but spaced out a bit at times! Haven't smoked anything now for over 4 years.

Congrats ! You saw the absolute best live performance with Pulse!! I probably heard the studio version hundreds of times on our local "play 4 Floyd songsevery 8 hours". Hard to believe but first time I heard the Pulse version was when I bought a 99 cent cassette . After the song was over there were sounds of a lawn mower and birds and it made everyone at work just break out laughing!!
Great analysis about the guitar solo where you said he takes you to the place you get to on the record and then smashes through and takes you on a journey. I liked that.
It just goes to show you that you don't have to be fast and flashy to be a great guitar player. David Gilmour proves that. This man plays with feeling

Andy, good to see you rocking the Zep shirt. I love seeing people 30-40 years younger than me wearing Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd t-shirts! Keeps me young at heart. And Alex, you're right on. Some guitar solos completely fit with the flow of the song and some are just, well, good term: mental masturbation. David Gilmour is a master and kind of follows the B.B. King style; saying more with one note than most musicians can say in a whole song.

Other big bands have caught up with the grandiosity of live show effects but I think I'm right in saying that Pink Floyd were the first band to start doing big expensive shows with loads of lights, lazers, film projections, fireworks and massive props. They were definitely the first to have big inflatable puppets and flying dirigibles. I went to see Roger Waters doing The Wall and it blew my head clean off!!! It started with a fucking plane crashing into the stage and exploding!

I just love to see the young folks building an appreciation for the music of my generation. I've seem Floyd live twice, Animals and the wall... great shows from a truly great band! I saw the Roger Waters "The Wall" show, and it was spectacular and very much like the original.
Probably one of the best stage shows ever performed. Pulse was incredible
On the Turning Away is another great tune from this performance.

I've loved Pink Floyd since the 60's (yes, I am THAT old) and it's a real delight seeing people enjoying their music for the first time. Seeing your reaction I caught a little of the magic I first had way back then. The adage 'music is timeless' is so true with their work. I just read a couple of days ago that David Gilmour is auctioning off most of his guitars including the "Black Strat" for charity. When asked if was going to have a hard time letting some of those go he replied; "Nah." I don't think we will see his likes again, at least not in my life time! Just a real class act!
That all said, it was cool watching this. The first time I saw this, many years ago I had the same fear that the solo would not measure up. Like you, I couldn't get the smile off of my face!

During a couple of shows I had floor seats under ball. Amazing.
There is a song in the concert called "Sorrow " that is Amazing! I have the DVD and have watched it so many times. Everything is just done superbly. Check out Sorrow, Run Like Hell, Wish you were here.
Sadly the video is cut after that song. Because after it, there is Run Like Hell, which is the last song of the concert. I think, those 2 songs should be played together.

The video actually doesn.t do the “Glitter ball” - moment justice. I was @ Parken (Denmark national stadium) on Aug 25 1994, and when the Super Troupers hit the ball, the entire world exploded into small glowing dots, so You felt like You were floating amongst the stars. That was a truly magical moment. And even though I had ingested neither drugs nor alcohol, I still left the show high.
I have seen this in the Netherlands in 1996 I remember the moment Wel when the lights hits the giant mirror ball. Xtc without Xtc. Best concert ever

It's so amazing watching reactions to music I grew up with. I was a teen in the 70s. There was so much amazing, diverse and incredible music then. I've been to 54 concerts, 4 last year and I plan on going to many more. 🎼🎶🎵🎶
The best reaction is that you have almost no reaction....you are sitting there as Wow'd as the crowd. It is the perfect storm of great song, great live performance and great video of the show.....
Around 1983, my 15 yr old brother took up electric guitar. He then started album collecting from Rush, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin & Pink Floyd...one group at a time, in order of release. One day he dragged out his boombox & played this album for our 60 yr old mom. He came out & flipped the cassette over for the 2nd side. I can still see her sitting at the kitchen table, bobbing her head & flipping through her Woman's Day magazine. This ended up being her favorite song. Great video y'all!

Thank you so much for reacting to this. I was in high school here in North Carolina when this song first came out in 1979. I remember it well. My girlfriend and I at the time loved attending concerts. It was one of the things we loved doing together. My wife loved concerts as well during that time. There were a huge number of wonderful groups at the time and concerts were not very expensive to attend. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Boston, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Triumph, 38 Special, Foreigner, and many others. I can not describe to you what a wonderful time it was to be young then. We were happier, relationships were closer, life was more carefree, and the music was spectacular. My heart just aches that young people will not get to experience life as we did as teenagers in the 70’s/80’s. Again, thank you so much for posting this video. It was a wonderful treat.
There are few bands that sound as good or better live than they do in studio. Floyd is one of them. You'd think they wouldn't considering how complex and layered their music is. But the fact that it is, is a tribute to their perfectionism. That solo can be a seperate song all by itself. BTW, those lights were absolutely blinding live. You can see how it destroys the camera lens. It was as if you were being blinded by the sound and power of the guitar. Hair raising! There was lightning and thunder in the air over Soldier Field in Chicago that night which added even more to the fury and spectacle. Truly a memorable night.
FYI, Roger would normally sing the 'hello' part but Rick and the young backups were a pretty good substitute.

I would say *historical* event now looking back on it. btw, the floyd light show is another whole discussion. they literally set the standard for all other big touring bands that came after. Whether in studio or in person, these guys were the truly the complete package.
@fred bloggs oh yeah... the background sounds and voices come at you from all around the stadium. Not just from the front like most concerts. I was up in the stands at soldier Field, and you could literally hear the sounds of clocks ticking and whispers coming from over your shoulder. Floyd!

I was there, 6 rows back and remember vividly looking over my shoulder at the mirror ball and back at David Gilmour as the ball opened up and the incredible solo was just keeping us in that moment. I can't watch it without tears rolling down my cheeks by the end of it. And that's 26 years later!! I'm so glad there were no phones waving about everywhere.

Yes you are right!! We just haven’t figured a way to have two headsets going on at once that are synced together while also having the computer recording the sound. I’m sure there might be a way but we just haven’t had time to fully get it yet, but I hope you know I agree 100%, he will not hear Echoes without a headset, THAT’S for sure!!! 😁
I saw the Pulse tour performed at Pittsburgh's 3 Rivers Stadium in 1994. My youngest brother had to hold his head together during that solo. 25 years later it still brings tears to my eyes.
David solos are some of the most beautiful guitar solos of the world!
The harmonies between David Gilmour & Richard Wright (RIP) were ALWAYS immaculate!! Just listen to the song Echoes (both album and Live at Pompeii versions) as an 'early' example of how those two were meant to play (& sing) with each other!
I remember my reaction first time hearing (then seeing) this song, and it gave me the biggest smile seeing both of your reactions! Indeed, they knew how to kick this song up to an ethereal level (it was amazing before, but we just reached omnipotent status with this!!). Add to that the 'spectacle' of their stage show, and you have an experience like no other!! Great video guys!
While its great that younger folks are digging this music, and are stunned by the performance, this is only a fraction of the experience. As good as these performances have been documented, they barely compare to the real live experience. The Floyd tours after Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall were beyond belief sonically. They played at volumes bands are no longer allowed to perform at. Gilmour's guitar for the Animals tour was like a laser cutting through the mix. Recorded Floyd (especially the studio stuff) was nothing like live Floyd. The live energy was a 10-fold difference. Unfortunately, recording technology hasn't figured out how to capture performances without loosing that dynamic range, so the only way to get close today is with some of the better tribute bands.
Even tributes don't get it close to the old 70's Floyd concerts. The Animals tour had David playing his most aggressive guitar to date... Even by todays standards, his playing on the Animals tour was jarring. Sheep being a point in question.... I was at their very last show in the United States at Giants stadium in 94. Upper deck by the far goal line. A ways away. I was in college and I took my father who used to own a record store. By far this is the best spectacle for a concert I've ever seen. The ball rose from the middle of field by the mixing boards. They had the flying pigs. You should React to the video not just the audio. The songs are fine but it's all very choreographed. I saw this showv twice but the second time they played Dark Side in its entirety. That was a treat and very cool. Watch it.

My dad saw them live on the Pulse tour in Tampa, FL. May of 1994. He’s been to various rock concerts throughout his life but said there was absolutely nothing like Pink Floyd. An experience he’ll never forget and I am envious of!
By the end, that guitar was crying out for us to wake the hell up!! Everyone is too comfortably numb.
I do love to see all of you young folk really appreciating the Floyd. I went to my first concert in Brighton, England in 1968. I was 14yrs old. So pretty old now! I was at a free concert in Hyde Park where they played a song called "Eclipse" which turned into "Darkside ".
This never gets old, because it’s stupidly Good. P.S. the Worlds greatest technical Guitar players, I think couldn’t get anywhere near this.

May 29th, 1994 Ohio State University. It doesn't feel like 25 years ago.One of those nights you can never forget. The huge disco ball didn't come out of the ceiling, there is no ceiling. It rose up at about the 30 yard line of the north side of the stadium. It was beautifully amazing!
I saw Pink Floyd on twice, one time was on this tour at the old foxboro stadium( open air, where the New England patriots use to play)and I remember Gilmores solo echoing through the nitetime air during this. Plus everyone was in a happy state of mind 🤪.
And the big spinning disco ball was so mesmerizing, the solo was sorta background noise. Then it flowered, got very intense. Felt like you wanted to jump out of your skin. Lol
