We’ve been meaning to hit this live show for a long ass time, and it just amazing. Oozing emotion and that classic gritty psychedelic feel we’ve come to love from Floyd, hope you guys are having a great week! 😁🔥
Andy & Alex I thought your faces froze towards the end of the song ,lol.LOVE THIS SONG.i got to see them in Tempe in 94 .absolutely mind blowing ,the entire stadium frozen in awe.as always dudes, great job, great life
when i was in high school there was a theater that would show midnight rock n roll movies on saturdays. saw this movie at the midnight show. mind BLOWN.
It is necessary to start from the beginning to understand the IMMENSE, THE COLOSSAL role of Pink Floyd in the history of music in our time. And what better way to get back to the basics, so that a young person like you can grasp the precise time when the influence of this group was felt. There is no greater testimony than the recording of the historical video of Pink Floyd in Pompeii (1 and 2) to capture its full scope. Why?... Because this is the exact moment of the changeover. Middle, of which Echoes is a part, was made at that time. But what people have to realize is that in 1971, the world is still under the yoke of the Beatles and the little melodies 'Yeah. . . Yeah. . . Yeah'... Commercial compositions, short in time, and without any pretensions. And here comes this band!. . . . . Celestial. . . Interstellar. . . A music that comes straight from the edge of the universe. Can you realize? The Beatles in 1964 and 7 years later Pink Floyd. UNBELIEVABLE!. . They literally opened the musical skies to other bands like Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Metallica etc. . . . They are the first of our time to build a bridge between the long works in musical duration ( 18, 25 min. etc. ) such as Beethoven, Mozart. A melody of Elvis, the Beatles were all very short and of a commercial nature. One last point. . . Before them the shows were minimalist. Very little sound, visual and minimal lighting support. They really revolutionized these aspects too. . . Also they are the biggest band of all time. In three, four hundred years, they will still listen to them and have the same reactions as you
Damn straight! I went to visit my mom last weekend & while walking my dogs, a guy in her neighborhood had some PF playing inside his house loud enough for me to hear before I passed by. He was outside grilling...grilling & chilling 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
In case you guys were curious, the music you hear on this video was the *actual* music recorded during that session on film. Pink Floyd insisted that that be the case with the film director prior to agreeing to do the film. NO post-production music over-dubs. That's why you see their entire 1970's production and recording set on the ground in the video. IT'S THE REAL THING.
@@jimhardiman3836 Only the visuals were recorded for the Paris clips. The director felt he needed more cutaway shots so they mimed to the audio of what you're seeing here.
@@Skraboing649 Not sure about miming, but with the scenes in the studio of David overdubbing Eclipse, (and I think also Roger on the Synthi AKS doing On The Run) it's true that they'd already finished DSOTM by that point which was in the process of final mixing, so they just basically went in the studio and played some stuff.
Agreed..! Check out the compilation albums too! They have alternate versions of songs, older remastered songs not known to most pink floyd listeners, and live versions of songs too like Pompeii and Live at BBC
Well if you have the whole entire DVD it makes sense they open up with Echoes and then the ended with echoes..And I got the DVD awesome times I had for over 15 years with it :)
I saw this in the theater in 1978. At the end, a young kid behind me said, "they didn't play any of their good songs". To which I replied, "nope, they just played their best songs".
About a month or two ago, there was a David Gilmore guitar collection display at Christie's in Beverly Hills, right across the street from a place I deliver to often, but I had no time to enter and look around. I was pissed when it ended
I've listened to this 50 times recently, discovered the 25 minute one and listen to it every night before going to sleep. It's like a relaxation tape, but better.
The first time I heard Echoes was at midnight in June in the dark with all windows open and a breeze blowing through the house. When the echoes began, the hair on the back of my head raised and I was transported to another place and time. A most surrealistic experience, all without ANY chemicals. WOW!
There is a part two of the song. It is on yt also. The song started and ended the concert film. Check out the behind the scenes vids from the remaster/extended version. There were some cool scenes about recording their new album Dark Side. The entire concert is worth a watch too. I prefer the original version over the new one which has animation.
Ugh...Don't ever speak about "The Director's Cut" version. It completely ruins Live at Pompeii. I try convincing myself that it doesn't not really exist. "Hey, I've got an idea... Let's take that concert the Floyd did in Pompeii. You know the one. The performance that is considered to be God's own work among Floyd fans. Yeah, the one that is so perfect it could never, ever be improved. Let's take that and fucking ruin it with the world's worst CGI. Yeah...That way the viewers aren't actually focused on the Floyd boys, but they'll be focused on a steaming pile of aids infested shit!!"
I saw Pink Floyd at Carnegie Hall circa 1970's and they said we are going to do some music from their as yet unleashed new album and proceeded to play Echoes. They were using a quadraphonic sound system and the music was swirling around the hall. Mind blowing to say the lease. Saw them twice again during the Dark Side of the Moon tour. Always a great experience.
This is, according to me, one of the greatest tracks ever made. I played that to my son when he was 1 while rocking him to sleep, he absolutely loved that song and would instantly calm down as soon as he heard that first "piing".
Is there anybody out there who had discovered this band in the 70s without the use of drugs?really soooo cliche.i doudt those who connect always those two things could ever understand and apprecciate this music from oxford students.very smart music for such a wasted generation.literally.if you dont believe me listen to what other -ahead of their time- bands have to say about this topic, such as the who and jethro tull.its like when you send a message as an artist (baba o riley) and everyone is so trully wasted that noones gets the irony of it.you need to reach a certain age to understand irony.imagine to try it with drugs.you ll be a laughing stock for generations to come.unless they take drugs to.a perfect way to ceep a whole generation comfortably numb.
Μαρια Χουρδακη , You ask about discovering PF’s Meddle without drugs, we’ll yes I did, given I was only thirteen at the time but in reality after listening to it I was naturally as high as a kite and certainly wouldn’t have needed anything to smoke or to take anything else to achieve the overwhelming power and effect the album had on me after my initial first listen. I’m not sure if it was my age and no doubt raging hormones may have contributed also, maybe? Who knows. Neither can I say it remained that way when I grew up and left home though. During the early seventies drugs were everywhere, nothing as evil as today though except for heroin. Heroin was the worst by far but then only in one major city in our country. In small towns like mine it was never seen. Weed or dope as we referred to it back then was extremely easy to come by and more often than not homegrown, not saturated in ‘God knows what’ as I believe it is today. But at least that was relatively short lived time of smoking for me, unlike my eternal love of PF which will remain forever. So many years now have passed but they still remain number one on my desert island disc list, closely followed by Radiohead. :)
Part 2 is a must see/hear. Also check out the version from David Gilmour live at the Royal Albert Hall ('Remember That Night') with Rick Wright if you didn't already! ua-cam.com/video/BW9Kts3fo98/v-deo.html
Yes, there is a Part 2, it comes later in the video. Part 1 is the first track, Part 2 is the last track, with 7 other songs sandwiched between. You guys should just watch the whole show, you'll love it.
First 2112, now Echoes Live in Pompeii?!?! You guys are killing me (with EPICS!!) I remember when my girlfriend (now wife) gave me this video for my birthday - we sat with a joint (or two) and grooved out to this amazing performance...and what a video! The sound was amazing, the visuals stunning - was great to capture the Floyd as they once were!! Great reaction guys to one of the best prog songs EVER! Now you need to do Part 2 and complete the song, it bookends the 'movie' - starts & finishes with Echoes, with a whole bunch of psychedelic goodness in between!!
They are all just so calm and unhurried; they get to things just when they should and no sooner or later. I live my life like this, because of them. Great vid and reactions as-always.
I always start all my listening experiences with the studio recordings then go to the live. And on occasion, you get epic live, which we’ve got here. I must have watched this 50 times. Never gets old. Make sure you watch the rest. You won’t regret it.
The Pink Floyd - Live at Pompeii DVD should be part of every Floyd aficionado's collection. Not only do they do Echoes and other tunes from Meddle, but you see them actually in the studio laying down tracks for this new album they've been working on called Dark Side of the Moon, and playing around with all the new fangled electronic toys they have at their disposal to make some of the weird sounds you hear in "On The Run" and elsewhere. I think you see a little of Gilmour laying down some of the "Brain Damage" guitar parts as well. There's also a few really spaced out sounding interviews in there. Lol!
When my family first got a video recorder (hired not bought) the first (VHS) video I rented for myself was Live at Pompeii. That version didn't have the studio scenes.
Alex wouldn’t look out of place if he went back in a time machine and joined the band at the venue. It’s often been said that looking at Nick Mason with all the hair and moustache etc. - now THAT’S what a proper drummer should look like! Great revue as always, and I agree, I was disappointed that we only got about half of the piece. But great live playing and nice to see early (ish) Floyd live.
Hold on guys! Pink Floyd delved into the movie industry also and this was just 1 scene from 1 of their movies. Pink Floyd Live in Pompeii is a full feature movie and you just listened to part of 1 song. I experienced the show on a full screen movie theater with surround sound at the midnight movie series that my local theater was showing. You need to watch the entire movie on the largest screen you can find. Yes there's another movie 😁 Obscured By Clouds. Have you died and gone to heaven? They have other awesome music videos and their epic production of The Wall. 🤭
back in the '70s the midnight showing of Floyd at Pompeii was the only way many of their fans actually got to see them since they did no American TV and so rarely toured the states. The midnight showing of Pink Floyd ran for years in theaters all across America. This was the first music video/movie I ever bought back in 80...81? somewhere in there. (they actually did do an 'American Bandstand' back in the '60s but none of that really registered at the time with post Dark Side era Floyd fans.)
I haven't watched it in a long time....but there is a DVD of that entire concert. They did the FULL album out there. I believe the crew had to run power cables a couple of miles out thru the jungle to reach the amphitheater.....and supposedly, a couple of backpackers stumbled across them, as they were filming this, and were allowed to just hang around & watch. How cool would THAT have been?
I always dig the amp/speaker stacks! This reaction is suited to your style of a straight listen. Part II will complete the trip! P.S. - was at that amphitheater in '95. It is the oldest surviving Roman amphitheater. Modern amphitheaters and stadiums even used the designs of the washrooms.
chris b and they recorded it in pieces. If they didn’t like a take, they re-recorded the part.. they would finish a section, go listen to it and decide to continue or re-do the section. True perfectionists.
There was 1 audience member. A kid who snuck in. They found him 45 years later and interviewed him for Gilmour's concert there. Also, worth noting a teenage Black Strat sporting a white pickguard makes its appearance. Little did it know that it would go on to have the career it had ending by being auctioned for $3.9 million just a few weeks ago. This guitar featured on Atom Heart Mother (1970), Meddle (1971), Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii (1971), Obscured by Clouds (1972), Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), David Gilmour (1978), The Wall (1979), The Final Cut (1982), About Face (1984), David Gilmour Live at Hammersmith Odeon (1984), Live 8 (2005), On an Island (2006), Remember that Night (2006/07), Live in Gdansk (2006/08), Bryan Ferry, Olympia (2010), The Orb, Metallic Spheres (2010) and Pink Floyd Endless River (2014), Rattle That Lock (2015), Live at Pompeii (2016). There is a part 2. Part 1 and part 2 bookmarked the the beginning and end of the Pompeii film. Part 2 is a little annoying in that the director chooses to silhouette the band during the albatross guitar section. Music's still great though.
This is one of my favorite PF songs and videos. It show just how great DG is at working that black strat to perfection! He recently sold it at auction for charity for a total of 3.975 million!
Saw this at the theater in the early 70s there is interview footage with the band as well, just the live tour, at that time, recorded at the Roman ruins in Pompeii. I got to see them live in 75 with the Wish you were here tour, they did Echos in as the final song. Da Bomb.
Excellent reaction. Love the duality: grooving the music, grooving the visual. Most PF fans know that Echos was a glimpse into what was to become next: the premier concept recordings ever: Dark Side of the Moon. One the charts for over 700 consecutive weeks (look it up). The rest as they say...is history! Love your channel! Keep it up!
I saw them perform this live as the encore for the wish you were here tour back in 75 or 76, it is the best concert I have ever attended and I have been to hundreds since then but nothing beats echoes live in its integral version.
A great reaction guys. It's great to see Nick Mason channelling his inner Bill Ward and the harmonies between Rick Wright and Dave Gilmour are so haunting. Rick is a sad loss of a great talent. You must do part 2 in fact do the whole Pompeii performance awesome.
Pink Floyd couldn't have come up with a more unique venue to play this fantastic track - the ancient arena at Pompeii, what a place to make music ! The ancient Romans would have loved it ! Excellent, pure joy. Now guys, you must see David Gilmour and friends play "Comfortably Numb" at the exact same place in 2016, it is a breathtaking rendition of one of Floyd's best tracks ever. 😘
I saw this film in the late 70s and the movie splits the 2 halves of the song. If I remember correctly part 2 was the climax and ending to the film, but I could be wrong about that. But just imagine you're me - a 16 year old in a theater at midnight madness circa 1979 watching this movie. It was surreal.
Of course that there is a part 2. And Fyi David Gilmour the guitarist performed live in pompeii in 2016 in front of a small crowd that you can find on youtube
One of the best Live performances of any band out there! There is something mystically haunting in Pompeii, and Floyd music captures it tightly. PF for life!
I found this so enjoyable. Watching you two experience Echoes part one Live at Pompeii for the first time and expressing genuine awe and enjoyment. I saw Live at Pompeii for the first time on an old tape when I was very young and had been in love ever since; pretty much my whole life. It makes my heart happy to see people currently experiencing and enjoying their magic when they've been with me since the beginning. Thank you.
Wow! See the difference from the studio version.Their is no sound at all like this in any music .Its like a movie from beginning to end. So organic, Raw, pure perfection. I wish they would have done a lot of their songs with this same sound.Their is a modernized version of Echoes: React to songs from... David Gilmore live in Gdansk, especially the blue ; )
Amazing how good they were live. No auto tune there. It is weird that the arena that they are playing in was used thousands of years ago for gladiator fights to the death. You can feel the strange feeling.
When I was in high school I got to see them perform this among other amazing tunes(set 2 was Dark Side of the Moon from start to finish) This is exactly how they sounded. Perfect!
I didn't know much about Floyd. Then a friend and myself went to a Midnight showing of "Pompeii", in the 70's. This was the opening song. That was the clip, that truely introduced me the the band. It has a special place in my musical heart. Thanks, ASAP Hollywood
This was part of a movie they did called "Pink Floyd at Pompeii". I watched this in college when they showed it in our dorm back in 1982. Part 1 that you watched led off the film, and Part 2 comes at the end. They also show other songs as well as showing them making Dark Side of the Moon. Highly recommend watching the whole movie.
Me and my wife were in Pompeii 8 years ago,it was only us two in the whole arena and I of course was thinking about Pink Floyd, kinda cool being the only peeps in there at the time, gives you time to think and reflect on life. Greetings from British Columbia 😎
The whole movie, "Pink Floyd at Pompeii" is worth watching. Shows a lot of stuff leading up to DSOTM including some studio footage. I first saw this in 1981 when the Dorm I was in played it for the first week in our activities room.
DAMN!!!! I was not expecting that! The whole time I was thinking that this would be a good soundtrack to a horror film. The whole song would be a good soundtrack actually. Also I noticed that since this video didn't feature the whole song live, I didn't get the same feeling I experienced when I listened to it the first time, however I still loved it and the creaking noises in the beginning. Another plus side is that this video made me appreciate the drummer and bass player more because they were so good!!!! Watching them play their parts live was unreal! The guitar player was excellent too. With that being said, can't wait for your next video!
Yes, there are two parts to that song but it's my favorite part of that one. Excellent sound for 1970 still makes my skin feel goosebumps after 49 years.
I saw this at a midnight showing a few years after it appeared (kids lining up at midnight at movie theaters to see rock concerts on film was a common occurrence in the '70's), and was *_blown away_* . I'd never seen anything like it before or since. Props to the guy who made this film - it's the only decent video of them performing in this era....
We’ve been meaning to hit this live show for a long ass time, and it just amazing. Oozing emotion and that classic gritty psychedelic feel we’ve come to love from Floyd, hope you guys are having a great week! 😁🔥

Welcome to The Floyd, still listening after 50 years and still great.
Yeah, this was a cool chill reaction, to one of favorite bands. Cheers Boys
Saw Pink Floyd at Pompei in 1979 as a freshman in college at the midnight movie plex. Blew my mind permanently.
@@Britonbearpretty sure it was the first video I ever bought. Up to that point I had never seen them play. Couldn't wait to get it home.
I often think that Alex looks like a young David Gilmour with the hair ^_^ Certainly would fit easily into the 1970s
Always thought Alex was more of a Dave Navarro doppelgänger
Glad to see you check this out. The whole thing is amazing!
Now the live in Gdansk Version! The cool thing about Echoes: Each version (studio, Pompeii, Gdansk) is so unique.
Try my channel sandkasten
That feeling you get when nick mason he does first drum notes . It be like that mates.
React to CAREFUL WITH THAT AXE EUGENE from Pompeii!
Yes
I haven't watched it in a long time....but there is a DVD of that entire concert. They did the FULL album out there. I believe the crew had to run power cables a couple of miles out thru the jungle to reach the amphitheater.....and supposedly, a couple of backpackers stumbled across them, as they were filming this, and were allowed to just hang around & watch. How cool would THAT have been?
195511SM Man, that would be awesome!
There is no jungle near Pompeii, it's not a tropical environment.
Yesss! Love this song thanks for doing this so glad you did it!!
I think the film maker Adrian Maben originally wanted the band to mine to this track but they refused and played it live.
chris b and they recorded it in pieces.
I just checked it out, and that is the same black Strat that was sold at auction for $3.9 million this year
Yes, I bought it.
This is one of my favorite PF songs and videos. It show just how great DG is at working that black strat to perfection! He recently sold it at auction for charity for a total of 3.975 million!
This is definitely one of my favorite Floyd songs. Check out the full 25 minute version
Saw this at the theater in the early 70s there is interview footage with the band as well, just the live tour, at that time, recorded at the Roman ruins in Pompeii. I got to see them live in 75 with the Wish you were here tour, they did Echos in as the final song. Da Bomb.
Yes, there is more. Echos at pompeii part II. It can be found on youtube. Always like to watch Pink Floyd reactions.
Keep it up!
Alex’s face for like a full minute during the intro is everything 😂
They also show how ahead of their time they were with engineering with sounds. Yeah, you need to watch the whole thing
That’s right kids, actual great music!
I saw them perform this live as the encore for the wish you were here tour back in 75 or 76, it is the best concert I have ever attended and I have been to hundreds since then but nothing beats echoes live in its integral version.
Yes there is a second part you guys need to totally check it out. Check out the rest of the film as well, you will not be disappointed.
Saw it last night for the first time. Fucking fan-fucking-tastic!
Yeah this concert always blows me away even after 35 years of seeing it time and time again!
The acoustics in this arena are incredible.
Even though this came out 50 years ago when I was 12 it still sounds like something from 50 years in the future
It always will.
Of course that there is a part 2.
And Fyi David Gilmour the guitarist performed live in pompeii in 2016 in front of a small crowd that you can find on youtube
Prob my fav song of theres of all time, its just so damn epic, what a trip they take you on. This is a great live version.
THERE IS A PART II ON UA-cam AS YOU ASKED
That funky groove....wow :)
You ought to check out the famous transition into funk on David Gilmour Live 2006 Remember That Night. The audience cheered when they did it.
Finally! Been trying forever to get people to react to anything from Pompeii. The whole thing is amazing.
I've stood on that very spot in '86,great show!
This is a great, great film... You guys definitely need to see the whole thing.
There’s only one Gilmour
I like that you guys watch the whole video and not stop it during. You give your opinions when its over that's great, keep it up.
their voices just give me chills
Can we agree that nick mason is criminally underrated especially in this set, probably his best work
Yes.
Thank you.
that was the proper response. Yalls should do the pompeii One of These Days
I love the version of Echoes from Gdansk. You can tell from the parts between Dave and Rick they're totally in tune together. Love that part
Gilmour*
Amazing how good they were live. No auto tune there. It is weird that the arena that they are playing in was used thousands of years ago for gladiator fights to the death. You can feel the strange feeling.
When I was in high school I got to see them perform this among other amazing tunes(set 2 was Dark Side of the Moon from start to finish) This is exactly how they sounded. Perfect!
Pink Floyd London...yeah
The entire movie is a gift!!! You get to see snippets of them recording Dark Side of The Moon!
I first saw this in 1981 when the Dorm I was in played it for the first week in our activities room.
what a band there is no one out there like them
I find this version much better than the studio version, even though the "song" is cut in two parts. I still have the VHS video of "Live in Pompeii".
Really enjoy when you discover what I was listening to when I was your age...blew me away then too and even now I still get blown away.
It’s a masterpiece and IMO along with part 2 is the greatest song ever produced
Not enough words to describe how good this song is. Thanks for another great reaction. ✌️
It's the first time for me too.
Great moment
Mi canción favorita desde siempre bro! Se ve que ambos si saben de buena música. Great reaction 🤙🏼
