"Pretty Woman", "Only the Lonely" "Blue Bayou" "Running Scared" "Its Over" are all big big Roy Orbison hits from the Sixties. Roy and Elvis came up together and were fans of one another.
I too brother. I'm headed rapidly to 73 yrs old. Once in a blue moon of blue moons I hear something I have not heard even on Mr. Orbison compilation albums. BUT not many. The Raybans were initially to hide behind but he found he could see the audience past the spot lights and kept them as a trademark.
My dad used to play Roy Orbison all the time growing up.😊 They were pretty close in age. Maybe about a year apart. Elvis Presley was a big fan of Roy orbison. Elvis even once said that he thought Roy had the most perfect voice in the world. Elvis even said that he'd never record one of Roy's songs because he wouldn't be able to do it any better.
Most likely the song you've heard maybe in movies that Roy Orbison did was called oh pretty woman but my personal favorite of his songs is (anything you want) I sang that song to my everyday while she was going through chemo treatment it's very hard for me to listen to it now without crying
@@laupstad Don McLean had a cover of this very song, Crying, that was a bit of a hit. I remember Orbison drawing a distinction saying that he did in full voice, without using falsetto.
Roy was not blind but he did have poor eyesight. He forgot his normal glasses for a performance once so he wore his prescription sunglasses instead and that became his signature look. He was also self-conscious about his almost white hair from a young age and dyed it jet black. Incredible singer and musician.
This is actually not true that he had poor eyesight. It was just more speculation from him wearing the dark sunglasses all the time on stage. He had stated several times in interviews that he never had a stylist or anyone like that so he wore whatever he was the most comfortable for him. He wore the dark sunglasses because the made him more comfortable on stage, with the lights and even having to look into large audiences. So it was a lot of rumors and speculation that just wasn’t accurate. I have no idea about the hair thing, I have never heard that before.
Same with Stevie Wonder, they Were legally blind which means they couldn't see farther than , 2 feet in front of them. Elvis after he got glaucoma was the same after 1973.which makes it even more amazing how he performed on stage! The lights hurt Elvis eyes so bad that it caused him alot of pain . It was tears streaming from his condition, not sweat like people thought streaming down his face. There was always someone waiting in the wings to lead Elvis out to the car from the stage because he was blind from the lights!
The most cruel turn of fates I've seen in my life was when in the middle of of his late 80's comeback, He was taken from us..He'd been through sooo much heartache in his life and deserved to live a lot longer.

It's called respect. When you go to hear someone sing, you quietly sit & listen. One of the reasons The Beatles quit doing concerts was because no one actually listened to them.

Not the best version,I saw him perform a few years before he passed. He stood perfectly still and blew us out of the theater with the power of his voice. He was magnificent ☮️ Not blind just wore shades
To me, the difference between Roy and Elvis is that Roy’s singing had the power to make me cry because of the pain he showed . I love Elvis’ singing but I don’t cry hearing sing, except for his song, Are You Lonesome Tonight?
Saw him too, in the early 70's he didn't talk much just introduce his next song and we clapped so hard our hands turned red. Back then recording or not you sat quietly and listened to the song and clapped at the end. If you made noise, you would be ushered out immediately.
There was no one like Roy. Those songs, that voice! The beauty of his voice is something you can never forget. I loved everything he did, except Pretty Woman which was his biggest hit. Saw him once in concert, toward the end of his career. Still had that gorgeous voice.
Flooded with memories of one of my dad's all-time favorites. Learned early on the AMAZING power of Roy's music on fussy babies. Our grandbabies and now great-grands have been soothed and drifted to peaceful slumber by this phenomenal artist. Thank you, Dad, for sharing wonderful music that blesses me to this day. Happy Father's Day up there.
That was pure talent a singer who could actually sing a song in a live performance flawlessly. Sample Linda Ronstadt's Blue Bayou also a live performance no autotune.
I watched this video when it was new. I loved your reaction and appreciation for Roy and his music. I'm an Old Broad (b.1954) so I remember hearing Roy on the radio when I was quite young. Only The Lonely and Pretty Woman were on the radio then. I felt so bad for him--he sounded so hurt. Turns out he was hurt-more than folks should be: he lost his wife in a motorcycle (I believe) accident, and 2 of his children in a house fire. He could try to hide that pain behind sunglasses (and poor eye-sight), but he couldn't hide the pain from his voice.
love, Love, LOVE Roy Orbison! I grew up on 60’s pop music and it helped me through some difficult times. It makes me so happy to see younger people loving these classics! Keep up the great work!
I was born in 53 and had the luxury of hearing the best music ever. I still listen to these songs and am so happy that the youngsters are finding our generation was the best ever.
Roy had so many hits. He also did this with K D Lang. She later did a solo tribute to him. She was one of his backup singers. The lead singer for the Mavericks patterned his style after Roy. I bet You have heard Pretty Woman by Roy.
Yes, he did all the songs you listed. You should REALLY check out The Traveling Wilburys, some his later group and an absolute supergroup, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. End of the line, or Not alone anymore both heavily feature Roy on Vocals.
Music scholars say that Roy Orbison has three-or four-octave range and his powerful, impassioned voice earns him the sobriquet “the Caruso of Rock.” In fact, he and Enrico Caruso (opera) were the only 20th century tenors capable of hitting E over high C
Many (many) years ago I had the privilege of seeing Roy Orbison in concert - he hit every note and in person his voice was even more thrilling. If you haven't seen the Traveling Wilbury's "End of the Line" or "Handle Me With Care" they're just fantastic - sadly 3 of that super-group (Roy Orbison, Tom Petty & George Harrison) have all passed on but the music lives on. Listen to his song "In Dreams" - it's a heart-breaker.
Hey man. Love this reaction and of course Roy Orbison. Since you mentioned Elvis; he was actually envious of Roy because he effortless ability to hit those high notes!! Elvis loved Roy's voice... 'Keep On Reacting' man. We are watching👍🏻🔥
Roy Orbison was amazing! I was a teenager in the 60s! It was a time of excitement, opinions, turmoil and war! I feel lucky to have been a part of that generation, although we haven’t done well by yours! We are now old men and women who have lived good lives and we are leaving you in times that are very much like the sixties, both the good and the bad! It looks different but feels much the same.
Elvis was first, they both recorded at Sun Records, along with Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. They all came after Elvis was famous and they were all greatly influenced by him. Almost every singer that came after Elvis was influenced by him. He changed everything about popular music, dress, culture, etc.❤
@@InspectorVolthey did. They also loved Elvis as John Lennon said, "before Elvis there was nothing". They said if not for Elvis there wouldn't have been the Beatles.
Roy was not blind. He had a condition that made him very sensitive to light. Elvis’ first national hit was heartbreak Hotel in 1956. Roy Orbison’s first national hit was in 1961, with Running Scared/Love Hurts. Roy started performing in 1956. Elvis started performing in 1954 but didn’t go anywhere. In 1956, he recorded That’s All Right, and his career hit the big time.
Google says: Roy Orbison wore sunglasses due to photophobia, an extreme sensitivity to light likely related to a medical condition. The iconic shades became a trademark of his image, adding to the mystery and uniqueness of his stage presence.
The greatest voice of the 60s, he wrote and sang some amazing, dramatic ballads. 'In Dreams' might be the greatest of his songs. 'Oh Pretty Woman' was his biggest hit.
Hi BP, Roy Orbison an icon. He was not blind.and he did sing them songs. I love his voice, vocally from low to high and in between omgosh!!...Peace🤙☝️😌
I remember when this was a huge hit. Actually this album generated a lot of hits. His voice was unique. Every teen girl loved his songs. Yes he wrote and sang Only the Lonely. Miss him. Yes, Pretty Woman and many more songs.
Love to see you reacting to arguably the greatest voice ever!! We used to actually listen to great performances. Check out kd lang, and The Traveling Wilburys. Love your reactions! Keep them coming! I'm a 74 year old musician, and you keep breaking down my favorite artists!
You must listen to K.D. Lang singing this, at the request by Roy’s family at Roy’s tribute show. Roy sang with the supergroup The Traveling Willbury’s. I also believe Roy was about the same time as Elvis. Roy also sang Pretty Woman!!
According to Roy Orbinson's son, Roy forgot his glasses when he went to do a show in Europe. This was before easily replaceable glasses with plastic lenses or easy quick deliveries. He only had his prescription sunglasses to wear. So he wore them in place of his regular glasses. He wore them even during his performances. Later he decided to continue to wear dark glasses for subsequent performances even when he had his regular glasses. The dark glasses became his personal trademark during his performances.
My personal favorite of Roy's is Running Scared. My personal connection to that song involves me heading home after my first game playing for my HS football team, after we won, my dad was driving me home listening to the oldies station (this would have been 1988) and that song came on as we pulled out of the parking lot and the song just hit me that (the other teams) "they were running scared". Unfortunately that was our only win of the season we were terrible. LOL But that song and memory stuck with me.
He had many hits , I was 20 years old when he sang this one. Danced my feet off to his music. I actually like KD Langs , cover another amazing artist from yesteryear. Hope everything is well with you and family BP🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾. Love Gmaw❤️❤️❤️👵🏼
Roy wrote Oh, Pretty Woman with friend Bill Dees. Story is his wife Claudette (another song) came in to get money from him and left, walking down the street to go shopping. He and Bill penned that song while she was gone.
As a teen I was into hard core punk & when I heard Roy. I was so moved by the beautiful tone of his voice & really spoke to the sorrow of my soul at the time.
No, he was not blind. But his eyes were very light sensitive. So he the dark sunglasses to help him see on stage. And if you have ever performed on stage, then you know how bright they can get.
Enjoying your reactions very much! Loved Roy Orbison and this song. The video of k.d. lang's performance of "Crying" at the tribute to Roy after his death is a must-see. He was one of a kind, and k.d. lang is a one of a kind voice as well.
This is another one of Roy's songs. He was a great song writer. He had a lot of tragedy in his life but he never seemed to stop performing.BTW,Roy wasn't blind but he often had stage fright. This sounds familiar because you just listend to K.D.Lang covering his songs.
That Roy Orbison is being discovered by this generation is fantastic. Have always loved his singing and still want to hear his music. His voice is beautiful and squeezes my heart no matter what he’s singing!
When Roy Orbison joined The Travelling Willburys (George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan) they all were in awe of him. Elvis was a baritone. Roy was a counter tenor. Elvis would have killed for his range.

Turns out he was hurt-more than folks should be: he lost his wife in a motorcycle (I believe) accident, and 2 of his children in a house fire. He could try to hide that pain behind sunglasses (and poor eye-sight), but he couldn't hide the pain from his voice.
Roy is a classic glad to see you expanding your horizons here❤
love, Love, LOVE Roy Orbison! I grew up on 60’s pop music and it helped me through some difficult times. It makes me so happy to see younger people loving these classics! Keep up the great work!
Elvis said his goal was to sing as well as Roy! He thought his voice was The-Standard to strive for!
"Blue Bayou" is a great Roy Orbison song.
Love his rendition and Linda Ronstadt’s cover of it. ❤
I was born in 53 and had the luxury of hearing the best music ever. I still listen to these songs and am so happy that the youngsters are finding our generation was the best ever.
His voice is just so incredible and his song writing is unique - check out his story: it's truly about overcoming tragedy.
Roy Orbison is an icon! His voice is incredible! Love your reaction!
Roy had so many hits. He also did this with K D Lang. She later did a solo tribute to him. She was one of his backup singers. The lead singer for the Mavericks patterned his style after Roy. I bet You have heard Pretty Woman by Roy.
Roy Orbison = legend
I'm 45 year old and found his best off cd on my mother's closet. Amazing artist. Roy and also The Platters was my gateway to this old music.
Loved seeing the guy live and in person … great vocals!
I love that you are into music I heard first hand. I graduated in 1964 when music was incredible. Thanks ❤
Always listened to Roy. What a voice.
His voice! Smooth as butter❤Much love from Canada❤🇨🇦
The Beatles loved Carl Perkins.
The King had mad respect for Roy & other artists of the times - it was a Golden era of musical gems.
@@InspectorVolthey did. They also loved Elvis as John Lennon said, "before Elvis there was nothing". They said if not for Elvis there wouldn't have been the Beatles.
Yes, yes!!! More Roy Orbinson PLEASE ❤
The Big O had major top-ten hits with "Only The Lonely" in 1960, and also with "Blue Angel" later in that year.
What was that???? The greatest falsetto in the history of music. Orbison was just incredible.
All his…Roy is a true icon!
I remember when this was a huge hit. Actually this album generated a lot of hits. His voice was unique. Every teen girl loved his songs. Yes he wrote and sang Only the Lonely. Miss him. Yes, Pretty Woman and many more songs.
My grand children 21 25 27 28 were raised on this music ! And today they respect every form of music ! Don’t have to like but respect the talent!🎼🎸🎼
Glad you got around to Roy what a talented man he wrote and sang so many banger’s 🔥
Roy Orbison came before Elvis Presley ❤❤
Love to see you reacting to arguably the greatest voice ever!! We used to actually listen to great performances. Check out kd lang, and The Traveling Wilburys. Love your reactions! Keep them coming! I'm a 74 year old musician, and you keep breaking down my favorite artists!
Ohhhh Roy....what a voice. Love him.
You must listen to K.D. Lang singing this, at the request by Roy’s family at Roy’s tribute show. Roy sang with the supergroup The Traveling Willbury’s. I also believe Roy was about the same time as Elvis. Roy also sang Pretty Woman!!
Now you know how great he was young man the pleasant voice of roy orbison is second to none just outstanding ❤
Roy is awesome, one of a kind. K D Lang does this song as a tribute to the late great Roy. You need to hear it, amazing!!
Roy Orbison had so much talent and the most beautiful voice and a ethereal stage presence. He was simply wonderful
Yes! Luv Roys style. I listen to pretty much anything he did. One of my favs is Blue Angel.❤
Elvis loved Roy Orbison voice, he wouldn’t cover his songs because he said he had the perfect voice.
A Black And White Night with Roy Orbison is a great watch. Star studded event. Orbison has always been my favourite singer. :)
My dad loved Roy Orbison and this song... I grew up on this stuff. Amazing voice. Love tour reacrion.
My favorite voice in my childhood. Was totally obsessed with his music. No, he isn't blind.
He did all those classics 🙏🐊❤️🦉👍
They’re quiet because they’re respectful of his talent.
Those time!! SINGERS! Were just AMAZING!!! REAL SONGS & MUSIC!!♥️♥️🕊️🕊️🕊️ROY! Elvis!! 🕯️♥️🕊️ JOHNNY Carson!! ❤🎉
His voice is so unique and beautiful. Should listen to him with K.D. Lang😊
roy also wrote Blue Bayou. what an amazing guy. i also loved him in the Traveling Wilburys.
Roy's voice was next level ,his life story is incredible.
You boys keep playing my childhood. I never woke my dad. Every morning, every day... record player☺️ I ♡ Roy
I loved him more than Elvis, my aunties thought I was nuts.
As you are just discovering K.D. Lang too, you HAVE to listen to her and Roy doing Crying as a duet ... OMG! You will not be disappointed
Everyone knows him from pretty woman but there are so many other good songs from him it's worth diving into the catalog
