Nintendo needs to get on the N64 and Gamecube ports to Switch. Those would sell really well a la cart. At the rate that the online app is getting games, it will be years before we get to those. Do they not like money?

My guess is Nintendo is waiting to release games from other console generations like SNES, N64, and Gamecube, to help with the adoption of indie titles being ported/made for the Switch. I think if most people had the option to spend $15 on a new indie title or Super Mario Sunshine, they are going to pick the latter.

A few side notes I would like to add to Bob's video:
-the SNK 40th anniversary collection contains the NES and Arcade version of those games that have a console version of it. They are adding a few more games as free download in the coming months.
-There is also the Atari Flashback Classics, which is a collection of 150 Atari games from the 70s and 80s.
-Somebody already mentioned this on the comments but there is also The Capcom Beat em Ups bundle, which is an excellent collection of 90s Arcade beat em ups from the company, including a game that was never in home consoles before (Sadly it is missing some licensed games like Alien vs Predator).
-SF 30th anniversary collection is a bunch of arcade versions of Street Fighter, SF2s, SF3s and the alpha series.
-Lastly, if you are considering PS2 games as retro: Onimusha Overlords, Okami, Katamari Damacy, Sphinx and the cursed Mummy are also in the service. So...there you go.

The problem is that all the other namco museums for cheaper on other systems include a lot more games.. I thought i might as well spend the extra 10 bucks and get pac man championship but it's unplayable on the small screen, it's just too intense.. The problem with that is Metroid 2 which the only remake it got is so different from the others. Nintendo still doesn't know how to internet. I feel like they just leave SO much money on the table by not doing simple things like organizing their eShop and dumping all their ROMs on it, or making voice chat that isn't a dumpster fire... The ONLY reason I can think of why they wouldn't sell N64 ROMs is because they're planning on making a N64 Classic eventually. But even then, why not still sell the games digitally, too? I swear, the Switch would print even more money if they figured out what year it is...

When they put Road Rash 1,2,3, and the 32 bit version on the Switch I'll be happy. I know that the 32 bit version would be harder because of the licensed music. If they had to drop that music to port it, that would be fine.
If EA won't make a good modern Road Rash, they should at least give us a way to play the best of the series on modern consoles.

On N64 & WiiU you can play a direct port of the Arcade Donkey Kong via Donkey Kong 64 (with enough banana fairies to unlock it). You also play a 1 life variant during the main game for 2 collectibles.
On 3DS there was a modified version of the NES port of the Arcade Donkey Kong to include the 50m level that is absent in the NES versions.

  • @crossmr
    @crossmr 5 років тому

The problem is, I don't really want "collections". The entire point of the virtual console was that you bought exactly what you wanted. Sega released their collection on Steam. It's all DLC. You can buy only the games you want. I want only a couple games from that. Like Phantasy Star 4, which is the only game I bought for it on Steam. People don't want to be drip fed this trickle of games from Nintendo, waiting months and years for the game they want to come out. I really don't know why Nintendo can't get their act together at this point. Create a virtual console (or whatever they want to call it) service, and put up all your first part games from day 1. Price them accordingly. Then negotiate for and release whatever else you can on their too. The only games that you should really be adding later are games that took awhile to negotiate licenses for. Emulation has been a thing forever, it should be almost zero effort on Nintendo's part to make all these first party games available. I really don't know what it is they gain by doing it this way. I guess they're trying to get people to buy switch online, but they did the same thing on the Wii, a trickle of games every month, with some first party games taking forever to release, and then they had no excuse like trying to get people to buy their crappy online service.

I think the reason people care about the Virtual Console name so much is that under that name thy know that certain platforms are covered. Which gives them hope that certain games will eventually show up on the service. Without the banner that is virtual console there's no telling what games will and won't show up on the switch and I think that Prospect is what scares people the most.
I personally only want to see some GBA, DS & GC games get to the switch if it's not available then I can't say I'm fully satisfied with what we have

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TELLING ME CRYSTALIS IS ON SWITCH! That is my favorite RPG of all time! I can't thank you enough!
On the retro aspect, I tend to think retro includes everything up to PS3, but it turns out that since retro just means OLD, it will always be subjective. Pseudo-realistic or believable human graphics didn't exist until PS3. OG Xbox got insanely close with games like Black and Call of Duty. So maybe it's just better to call everything prior to HDMI retro? But in 10 years, someone will think PS4/Xbone/Switch is retro. That's my take.

I like the chance to play the old library, which I would've never had a chance to do unless dropping way more $, and the hassle of a different set up. I just beat The Adventures Of Lolo, like where the hell has THAT been all my life?! Great little puzzler game with good replay value. And seeing my kids try to beat Legend of Zelda? Priceless. They have no idea how easy they have it....Lol. I told them no cheating by looking online! Ha, they're dying. Anywho, great vid, I love the retro stuff being so accessible.

“You’re old accept it just like the rest of us.” Loved that. I remember playing Out Run in an arcade machine sit-down cabinet, so getting this on the Switch could be an enjoyable nostalgic treat. Sega Classics is tempting too once I get through my gaming backlog!

You forget to mention that the Namco Classics Collection, also includes the multiplayer game PacMan Vs., which is a ton of fun to play. It does require 2 switches though.

Wonder Boy in Monster World is another one you missed. Technically it's a remake but you can play through the whole thing with the original graphics if you want. There are also a bunch of old ZX Spectrum and Amiga titles like Putty Squad, Robocod, D/Generation, Sabouter!, Gods and Flashback that have been released in Europe but I'm not sure whether they've been released in the US.

I consider the previous generation to be “semi-modern”, because it’s no longer really modern, but not quite old enough to be considered retro in my eyes, and the generation before that is semi-retro, as in it’s not quite _that_ old, with most of not all of the systems from that generation not even being 20 years old yet, but still close enough to consider them at least kinda retro, and anything before that is just retro.

Actually the "32 bit era" would be the 6th gen consoles(PS2, Gamecube, XBox, Dreamcast), in the 5th generation one of the consoles was 64 bit.

The SEGA collection sounds like a good bang for your buck! I also have been looking into the Atari Flashback Classics which includes 150 games. I didn’t grow up with SEGA or Atari, so it seems like the best way to get into the libraries for both right now 🙌🏼

Would be nice to have Gamecube era games to start getting ported to Switch though. We already have the controller adaptor. Tbh I really just want Soul Calibur 2 and the original Luigi's Mansion but I know tons of people would love to see Super Mario Sunshine come to Switch (even if the controls have to be different because of the lack of analogue triggers) and we know the Switch could do it with the right tweaks.

I'll be honest, I like the idea of the free retro games over a virtual console, I would never justify buying any of these games if it was a virtual console but because they are free I'm actually playing them and they are pretty fun

Life without virtual console. At least we had n64 games. Now all we have is Sega re releasing games that they have been re releasing for as long as they can.

Personally, I don't have much issue with VS Super Mario Bros. Then again, it helps that the Arcade Archives allow you to customise the controls as you see fit, as opposed to the NES service which forces you to use a fixed control scheme that feels uncomfortable on the official joycons.
I recently bought the Atari Flashback collection. It's been an absolute delight replaying old favourites from my youth. At the same time though, it also makes me yearn for a rerelease of the Activision Anthology. That one was awesome.

  • @StormsparkPegasus

Donkey Kong came out in the arcade first, so the arcade version is the original game. The NES version was a watered down port. Super Mario Bros was the opposite, it came out on the Famicom first, the arcade version was the unfaithful port. I don't care if there is a "Virtual Console" as long as you can still get the games.

The SNK 40th anniversary collection is pretty good, a lot of games on it plus they're releasing more games as free DLC. So it's win win.
Just a shame Sega don't do something like that so they can just keep adding games to their collection....
