Perhaps he didn't grow up with Nintendo and didn't play Dr. Mario, Techmo Bowl, or Ice Hockey as a kid? Granted these games aren't great graphically and some are limited in their play, but these are classic games if you grew up with them. Part of NES' charm is the nostalgia that comes with these games, not necessarily how "playable" they are, esp the early titles. It's interesting to hear a different perspective, though, so I'm not knocking his opinions--I was just taken aback by the dismissive attitude towards those particular games.
I mean come on I think if we all sit down and really think about, its obvious that, above all else, Tennis is #1. Not just on the service, not just on the NES, but the best of all time. The monumental three shades of blue that make up the crowd, the amazingly unique and interesting court (even more interesting than Ultra Smash's court), and above all else Mario is the ref. It doesn't get any better than that. Sorry Bob, but the facts are just undeniable.
I think my favorite title here is Balloon Fight. It's a pretty fun title once you get used to the controls and physics. I for one am very satisfied to have NES titles as part of the Nintendo Switch Online service, as I never had the chance to play any of these titles on the Wii/Wii U/3DS Virtual Console, and these titles were first released long before I was even born!
I am only 20 so my first introduction to SMB3 was on the Wii as a download. And I played it religiously. I am so happy to have it back. And yeah it is worth $20. The replay value of it is insane
I'm looking forward to playing Ice Hockey online, it should be a fun time. Balloon Fight and Gradius what I'm HERE for all day (not literally, I have work)
Wulffden's Ranking List: with 20 being the worst. 1) Super Mario Bros 3. 2) Super Mario Bros. 3) The Legend of Zelda 4) River City Ransom 5) Ghosts n' Goblins 6) Double Dragon 7) Gradius 8) Excitebike 9) Ice Climber 10) Balloon Fight 11) Mario Bros 12) Dr.Mario 13) Donkey Kong(arcade game) 14) Yoshi 15) Tecmo-Bowl 16) Pro Wrestling 17) Ice Hockey 18) Baseball 19) Tennis 20) Soccer sauceyyyy
List looks pretty good but like others have said, Temco Bowl should be top way up there. I wasted so many hours with River City Ransom tho. I'm glad to see it online because I was disappointed not to see it on the classic.
The tennis and baseball have nostalgic value for me cuz I played them a lot with my kids Loved baloon fight, ice climber, and excite bike too. My youngest used to call it becite bike. He was only 1 My Mother paid 90 bucks for Mario 3. That's my fave on your list. My son and I stayed up all night long playing that on the weekends. My Mother threatened to take it away if I continued to be such a slack mother.
What annoys me is that people make it sound like 20USD is a lot. It's 20 bucks A YEAR. That's literally 2 bucks a month rounded up (1.6 USD exactly). While other features are 100% lacking in the service, the price actually is fair for what you're getting. You're paying 2 bucks a month to play multiplayer and enjoy Nintendo's NES version of Netflix, which gets new games every month that you play LEGALLY. Assuming Nintendo eventually adds more features to Switch Online, you'd be getting more bang for your buck and the service might eventually become the cheapest one after PC, which is arguably irrelevant to the conversation.
@@retro527 Honestly, I'd pay the $20 a year just for the cloud saves or just for the NES games. Getting both and online multiplayer for Switch games is fine by me
@@retro527 It doesn't matter what the cost is. If a service isn't good I'm not paying anything, period. That's like if the government started charging 5 cents a year just to breath oxygen and you saying "Come on, it's only 5 cents!"
@@thegrayghost1786 The online service is bad, but on the nintendo online subcription, you also have a lot of NES/SNES games for free and a good cloud service (to save your game). The online is bad for smash/mario maker, but to do trade on animal crossing, is enough. For me it’s essential. You also have sometimes free game for 2weeks to try it (not a demo, the real game), like one days, splatoon was free for 2weeks for those who pay the online.
Meh. I'll be getting it because it is really cheap, but the titles aren't super intriguing tbh. I would obviously prefer SNES titles. That said, some cool NES titles would be SMB 2, Rampage, and Silent Service.
I like that you review these games from a current gamer perspective, lots of us play these with the nostalgia goggles on (me absolutely included). This video will be really useful for people who never played these on release.
Yeah Tecmo Bowl is great! I literally know nothing about football and I figured out the game with just some trial and error. If anything, it made me love the game more by trying to figure it out little by little. Plus the music... so good
That game was fun. In my Algebra 1 class As a clone named "Dinosaur" On my TI-84 Calculator when there was nothing else to do :| Even that was the last option to play out of the installed games
I love it. I Will finally play the original Metroid. And the first Zelda (legally). And that makes me happy. Plus I could just have Fever and Chill running in the bg for when I have to draw. Really looking forward to it.
The plan was to pick up Super Mario Bros 3 (my favourite 2d Mario) for the Switch whenever we got any form of Virtual Console, so I'm happy with that. I do hope they will expand at the very least into SNES era with this service as well and I'd jump up and down in joy if they went beyond it.
Very disappointed Bob, another Switch video that's not about useless accessories -_- Jk I am actually excited to play Dr Mario and Legend Of Zelda on my Switch!
My best friend came over and we spent all night trying out different games and while River City Ransom was easily the deepest co op experience, we had one of the best nights in a long time playing tons of Tennis... We didn't win a single match all night but we DID get slightly better and getting off a perfectly timed spike or cross court shot felt soooo good. Missing your serve also provided endless laughter. All in all, don't knock the sports games, with a friend they can be a whole lot of fun if you give it a chance.
I am disappointed in online tbh but i do love online and i do love super mario bros 3 its my favorite 2D mario game! Also nice list bob for sure later we gotta know what you think of the online update tho
NES graphics have really stood the test of time. When I play my NES classic, the graphics still blow my mind to this day. They don’t make em like they used to. They’ll never make consoles that powerful again. Kids today play games and they have no idea how amazing the graphics were back in the 80s.
Ice hockey rules. Better than blades of steel because you have total control over the goalie. Tip: quick tap the b button and your team will swarm around your net on defense. Great video.
When I compulsively bought a years worth of Switch Online I had no idea I'd be getting all these NES games as a bonus. Since then, I've only got one piece of the triforce to collect before attacking the final dungeon. Glad they included it. Definitely getting way more for 20 bucks than you could get with a years worth of an Xbox subscription.
I think you totally undersold Adventures of Lolo, a brilliant puzzle game that got SO much play in my household as I was growing up. It was the only NES game even my parents got into in a major way. It's not much of an overstatement to describe it almost as a 2D version of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.

For sure! Dr. Mario is a lot of fun. Sure it’s not as combo heavy as Puyo Puyo, but that doesn’t make it worse. It just means you have to think differently. It’s all about using what they give you.
Agreed. I have to be honest and say I just played it for the first time a few weeks ago, but I absolutelly loved it. Probably would rank it very high too
@@mariox7070 well that's morally questionable. I get it for people who can't obtain the game (can't afford the NES mini, a TV etc. because there are families like that) but to enjoy something a company creates but STILL go out of your way to make sure NOT to support said company is just fucked up. If you don't like Nintendo, then don't play their games. If you like their games and can afford to purchase them legally then do so. Don't pirate shit out of spite.

Got Nintendo switch and the NES games. My uncle (in his 30s) was so happy like a kid in a candy store. He beat Ghost and Goblins so easily and we spent all night playing that and Mario
I own two SN30 Pro and an SF30 Pro controller and they are great gaming controllers. The 1.28 update made them even easier to sync and lowered the latency down and they are as responsive as first party hardware or close. 8bitdo is killin it right now.

stapuft come on man, it’s like 3 bucks a month. And Nintendo needs to make up money for their dismal Wii U sales I’m sure. This might be part of it. But at the end of the day it’s still 3 bucks a month, with a lot of cool benefits it seems like.

There are a lot more that need to come back that you might shit on, but these are all great imho.
Getting to introduce my 6 year old daughter to Super Mario Bros. and seeing how much fun she had with it was so much fun. I can't wait for SNES games to get added eventually.
To those of you that have not played SMB3 with a friend... When it is your turn go to where the other player is and start the level. :) You're welcome. Just be careful not to lose because you will lose your turn. He did not mention that with SMB3 your "turn" when playing multiplayer was that you played until you died and then it was the other player's turn. Also a good house rule to stop fights is that if you "unlocked" it then you get it. ...just trust me on that.
I don't mind paying 20 bucks for online play, I spend like a 100 bucks every week on games anyway. Also having the original Zelda and Mario 3 on my switch is worth it alone.
@@badbroozer6561 well when you take into account people who own the NES mini, people who own the Wii U, and people who own the Wii, this is the same stuff they've been playing for years. there is no incentive to buy this if you've already been buying it years prior.
Daren Richards but it’s 20 dollars. Plus you get online service. I know it’s been free before, but if I had to pick between 20 or 60 dollars only, I’d pick 20.
+Daren Richards if you already own a Wii, Wii U and a nes mini I doubt anybody would be butt hurt about paying 20 bucks for the nes games again. Plus they're gonna expand this collection for free every month.
@@itsoracle 40 dollars more better.. idk.. I have an xbox one only for multiplayer. If they would add party chat too switch it would be just as good. It's not the switches fault that there aren't for multiplayer games.
Honestly? I'd much rather have it be 60 dollars like the other services if it meant it would be just as good as ps plus or xbox live. I mean, cloud saves (WHICH SHOULDN'T EVEN BE LINKED TO A PAID SUB WHEN YOU HAVE NO OTHER WAY OF BACKING UP SAVE DATA) that are limited to specific games with no buffer time if your sub runs out, 'free' games that are just old NES games we could already play on emulators, NES Classic and Virtual Console, not better multiplayer because it's still the same peer to peer it's always been, no in console voice chat or messaging. I get it's 20 dollars, and we knew it was coming from the beginning, but why is it a thing? When a console maker offers you a paid multiplayer service you expect it to come with perks and better multiplayer. Better mp isn't there, its the same old, and these 'perks' are things we already had, or things we should have had from the beginning.
I used to love tennis and Ice Hockey. Pro Wrestling and Techmobowl are iconic! Man, you're sleeping on some great stuff. Baseball and Soccer were actually fun, too.
While Super Mario 3 is a take turns multiplayer, it offers more than the other take turns. You both take turns on the same map. So, you are working together in the same space. Also, if the other player passes over the level you just beat you can tap the button to challenge them to a regular Mario Bros. stage where you compete for the next turn. You can steal the other player's turn and their cards. So, it definitely offers more for a take turns style multiplayer.
"I'd pay $20 for this game alone"
Don't say that Nintendo might do it

I mean come on I think if we all sit down and really think about, its obvious that, above all else, Tennis is #1. Not just on the service, not just on the NES, but the best of all time. The monumental three shades of blue that make up the crowd, the amazingly unique and interesting court (even more interesting than Ultra Smash's court), and above all else Mario is the ref. It doesn't get any better than that. Sorry Bob, but the facts are just undeniable.
This exquisite masterpiece of a game shall be noticed!! As I, your gracious partner, shall bring it to justice!!
Best game? What about knack three?
What about SUPAH MAHRIO BROS 2 BAYBEE!
I like it

Balloon Fight and Gradius what I'm HERE for all day (not literally, I have work)
Okay
Ice Hockey is sooooooooooo fun! I really don't care for standard sports games, but this one is a blast
Id rather fuck my wife....
well, with your friends really.
Calling it "Online" kinda defeats the purpose.....
So tonight I’ll be able to play mario bros 3 and legend of Zelda...

Except for where tecmo bowl is
That's very low for Tecmo bowl that game is an all time classic.
Swap Zelda with Mario 3 and perfecto
List looks pretty good but like others have said, Temco Bowl should be top way up there. I wasted so many hours with River City Ransom tho. I'm glad to see it online because I was disappointed not to see it on the classic.
Zelda, Metroid, and Mario 3 are my favorites.
The tennis and baseball have nostalgic value for me cuz I played them a lot with my kids Loved baloon fight, ice climber, and excite bike too. My youngest used to call it becite bike. He was only 1
My Mother paid 90 bucks for Mario 3. That's my fave on your list. My son and I stayed up all night long playing that on the weekends. My Mother threatened to take it away if I continued to be such a slack mother.
I say yes, yes it is. I'll pay 20 bucks for Zelda and SMB3 alone.
I saw somewhere that snes titles will come eventually
Those controllers are kinda cool, but the 8bitdo controllers are better in every single way since they are usable in any games and on any system.
I like that you review these games from a current gamer perspective, lots of us play these with the nostalgia goggles on (me absolutely included). This video will be really useful for people who never played these on release.
I will throw hands if you keep ragging on Dr. Mario Bro! Respect the Doc!!!!
Skip Tecmo Bowl?! What?? That's a great game, and if it's available to play online, omg, hold me back
Dallas Moye I think it’s because like he said, you need to know football to enjoy
Well isn't it that you can't play with randoms? That'd be stupid.
Yeah Tecmo Bowl is great! I literally know nothing about football and I figured out the game with just some trial and error. If anything, it made me love the game more by trying to figure it out little by little. Plus the music... so good
I rather have super tecmo bowl
I used to love Yoshi on gameboy😐

I have fond memories of playing this too.. But I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who didn't grow up playing it
I love it. I Will finally play the original Metroid. And the first Zelda (legally). And that makes me happy. Plus I could just have Fever and Chill running in the bg for when I have to draw. Really looking forward to it.
FBI open up
The plan was to pick up Super Mario Bros 3 (my favourite 2d Mario) for the Switch whenever we got any form of Virtual Console, so I'm happy with that. I do hope they will expand at the very least into SNES era with this service as well and I'd jump up and down in joy if they went beyond it.
I was so excited for this! I love old video games and now that I've played some I think it's 100% worth it.
Also, exitebike is the best track on MK8.
The amount of tricks in that course gives me MKW flashbacks
You are absolutely correct!

Very disappointed Bob, another Switch video that's not about useless accessories -_-
Jk I am actually excited to play Dr Mario and Legend Of Zelda on my Switch!
im ready to destroy in dr mario. idk how he can say that game is terrible!!

Mr. Johnson Where have you seen me?
yeah but they are portable now. like ever since i got the nes mini i was thinking "but can i play this on the go? " and now i can.
Adam Eason you can easily emulate these games, even on the shittiest Android phones ever.
Just bought it. For 20$. Wow! Was really hard! Never thought I could do it!
Bro why you h8ing on that tennis!? That's what my childhood was!!!

Yoshi and ice hockey were actually Really enjoyable imo, much more so than ice climbers
I have always loved Startropics. If you're not familiar, give it a try. An underrated classic.
It's kinda difficult. I don't even know how to activate potion or medicine or whatever it is.
I am disappointed in online tbh but i do love online and i do love super mario bros 3 its my favorite 2D mario game! Also nice list bob for sure later we gotta know what you think of the online update tho
The only nes games I wanna play is super mario bros and zelda.. Lol
and they would cost 8 bucks each- so your paying 4 bucks for cloud saves- THIEVES!!!!
I absolutely love the save function.
When will Earthbound Beginnings come is my question.
fuck ikr
That actually seems like a good idea.
A nerfed EarthBound Beginnings would be great.
Best gameboy game of all time? Dr mario. Excited for this. Never played on nes. Color? Holy crap!
Oh I remember I played Ice Climbers almost every day and yelled at my friends for being a stupid 2P.

I mean, Dr. Mario is a great puzzle game, come on
For sure! Dr. Mario is a lot of fun. Sure it’s not as combo heavy as Puyo Puyo, but that doesn’t make it worse. It just means you have to think differently. It’s all about using what they give you.
Dr. Mario is one of the best puzzle games of all time I was pissed when he ranked it so low
Agreed. I have to be honest and say I just played it for the first time a few weeks ago, but I absolutelly loved it. Probably would rank it very high too

I own two SN30 Pro and an SF30 Pro controller and they are great gaming controllers. The 1.28 update made them even easier to sync and lowered the latency down and they are as responsive as first party hardware or close. 8bitdo is killin it right now.

If no one bought this shitty online service, Nintendo would be forced to accept defeat and go back to the way things used to be. And we could have the true gamers safe haven again.
stapuft come on man, it’s like 3 bucks a month. And Nintendo needs to make up money for their dismal Wii U sales I’m sure. This might be part of it. But at the end of the day it’s still 3 bucks a month, with a lot of cool benefits it seems like.

I like these games. It gives me a chance to look back at gaming from when I wasn't around.
I don't mind paying 20 bucks for online play, I spend like a 100 bucks every week on games anyway. Also having the original Zelda and Mario 3 on my switch is worth it alone.
FryyoAss exactly. Glad someone isn’t bashing on the online. It’s 20 dollars, not 60. For 20 bucks, I think it’s worth it
@@badbroozer6561 well when you take into account people who own the NES mini, people who own the Wii U, and people who own the Wii, this is the same stuff they've been playing for years. there is no incentive to buy this if you've already been buying it years prior.

@@jimtaylor3917 40 more for better games every Month and Party chat
I also have Xbox
