My babysitter use to come over to MY home and I was the one who owned the Sega Master System. LOL. She use to play Double Dragon with me A LOT (Double Dragon on Sega Master System can be played by two players at the same time. It was a great two player team-up game). Rocky was another game we played together (Rocky has a two player mode where player 1 plays as Rocky and player 2 can play as any of the three opponents: Apollo Creed, Clubber Lang (who I always called Mr.T) and Ivan Drago, A.K.A: "Mister I will break you" as my babysitter called him. LOL). Rocky on Sega Master System is actually pretty fun as a two player game. We also played Pro-Wrestling on Sega Master System together and fought each other since that game has a two player versus mode. Most of the time I would play as the Great Maskmen (who were homages to real hall of fame wrestlers known as Mil Mascaras and Dos Caras) and she would mostly play as the Mad Soldiers (who were homages to real hall of fame wrestlers known as The Legion of Doom / Hawk & Animal: The Road Warriors). That game was really good as a two player versus game. Time Soldiers was another Sega Master System game (similar to Ikari Warriors, but better) which had a two player mode where we teamed up together. We would beat the prehistoric and ancient Rome and World War 2 levels together. We both made it together as far as the beginning of the Future World before the enemies would annihilate us. LOL. We also played Great Baseball together (which was another game which played great as a two player game. We would always try out different teams against each other). She liked baseball at the time and so did I. She also helped me level up on YS: The Vanished Omens (YS: Book 1 on Sega Master System. It's a one player only action RPG, but she helped me level up my character in between the main parts of the game. She would have Aron / Adol run around and kill enemies to increase my levels and then hand the controller back to me when I had to go through the main parts of the game. However, she helped me out greatly when it came to navigation (like in the cave), especially when I had to go through the tower since I would easily get lost and she would help me find my way through. Finally, the one game we both HATED was "My Hero" on Sega Master System. We would both take turns playing "My Hero" only for both of us to get extremely frustrated by this crappy game. LOL. It was one of those games with a "FAKE two player mode" (one of those games where each player takes their turn after the other player dies but you can't play together). I think the farthest we made it was the beginning of the third level before we were both killed. We both HATED "My Hero". LOL.
It's ambitious but not a great video for people that didn't grow up with the master system. Joe sounds flat when talking about absolute classics such as fantasy zone, spellcaster, cloud master and California games just to name a few. I almost feel like he's over making videos.

The fun in Spy vs. Spy is the traps you can plant. Despite both players seeing the same screen, this really works well and is what makes the game fun. Even better on the harder level. On the easy ones the traps don't matter as much, but *can* when used right.
Seriously appreciate all the work that went into this episode. I was an original Sega Master System owner. I still remember the day I got my Sega Scope 3D Sega Master System bundle for Christmas. Those were some great times. With all the Sega Genesis compilation releases it always puzzled me why Sega never released a Sega Master System compilation on modern systems or PC complete with FM sound when available. Again well done and thanks!
It's unfortunate, sega only ever re-release a select number of master system games, usually including them in either one of their games, or in their genesis compilations.
I remember seeing print ads for the Master System version of Asterix, possibly in mid-1991. Sadly it appears it was canceled when the system died. Oh well. It's a great game and I have a copy now. ;)
When Dave originally left I was worried but you have kept such an insane level of quality and passion the whole time and are still going above and beyond. Massive respect to you and I love this channel more with every video I watch.
This video must have taken a long time to make, but in return this has to be in my opinion the best UA-cam video about the games on the Sega Master System because of that. I did know that the US had way less games for the Master System than the EU, and that became very clear watching this video. Only the first 8 bit Sonic entry available, Castle of Illusion but not the impressive sequel Land of Illusion, no Bubble Bobble (the Master System version is by many regarded the best home console release of that game), no Tom & Jerry or Submarine Attack, no Wonder Boy in Monster World (8 bit conversion of the Genesis game) and so on. I live in Europe, and the Sega Master System was my very first gaming console.
I remember Joe mentioned that the Master System was the console he wanted to have a complete US fullset of games. His work and dedication on this video is absolutely out of the charts. Thank you!
Damn, good memory.....,I believe he said that on their game room tour episode.(edit......upon watching he did say there was one game he didn't have, James buster Douglas boxing. It's a crappy boxing game, it's 2000 in box complete, so who can blame him lol)
Joe, this is the best episode you’ve made since going solo. I can hear your enthusiasm for the Master System throughout this whole episode. I’m sure this video took a lot of work, but watching it was a real pleasure.
This is such an intense undertaking.🙌Thank you so much for your hard work. I still love the master system controller and it's soft an comfy directional pad.🥺
I remember walking into a cash converters was at 14 and buying like 20 Master System games for 2 dollars each. Still in my collection to this day 👌 slept on system for sure.
I would be sooooo happy to see a Game Gear version of this video. I felt like it carried the torch of the Master System (quite literally) and had a superior library all around. Literally dozens upon dozens of titles I could talk about all day.
Spy vs spy was amazing if played in multiplayer. We spent hours at a time playing this planting traps for each other was a lot of fun. My favourite mastersystem game has to be wonder boy 3 though.
Really enjoying this, great video. For someone in the UK who got his Master System in 1992, it's bizarre to think that the system was already discontinued in the US by then and a huge shame that you missed out on games like Ninja Gaiden, Sonic 2, Power Strike 2 and Land Of Illusion over there.
Not to mention, the Sega made Asterisk and Obelisk games...they're so much better than their 16-bit counterparts....and the 8-bit Core one. But Tonka sold the Master System here, as bad as Mattel sold the NES over on your side of the pond. I saw more people with Atari 7800 consoles, despite the 2600 quality sound. Just the box art alone made the Master System look like a rip-off. Assuming you could find it at all. Sega took over at the last minute, hyped up Sonic and Golden Axe so they could hold their heads high in defeat...and then they were gone.
So I'm watching thinking "He forgot Sonic 2.... ah I bet Joe is playing some sort of joke on us here..... THEY DIDNT RELEASE SONIC 2 IN THE US?!??!?" Well to be honest the first one is better in any case.
Best part about the SMS is it is not region locked, even with the PAL games so there are loads more games you can get and playing them on a US system is effortless.
the only thing i have to say about that is, dont be afraid to check out games from other regions, some great games never made the trip overseas and that can go for any console.
@@UltimateGamerCC thats how i found out about jurrassic park, who wouldve thought it would be an excellent platformer if not one of the best for the system
This was awesome. Would love to see this for other consoles with smaller libraries such as the N64, Wii U, Sega Cd, TurboGrafix 16/cd, Atari Jaguar/cd, and the Neo Geo Aes.
My 5 year old son is starting to show an interest in games and I'm thinking of starting him off on simpler games of this era so his imagination can fill in all the gaps due to the simple graphics, rather than go full blown PS5 straight away.
I was raised in the 128 bit era but started with an old Genesis renting cartridges when the stores were already dying. It was probably the best thing that could happen!
Honestly, retro games are just more fun than most of the new games....the stylish and/or cute pixel art, the simple to learn and fun (but hard to master) gameplay...i remember thinking when the 32 and 64 bit systems came out 'why would i ever want to play those crusty old 2d 8-16 bit games ever again?'....little did i know retro gaming would become my fav hobby, when i was in my 40s lol.
I think the speed, lighting, and quantity of visuals are very important to consider. I got fairly overwhelmed playing Sonic 2 the other day (but I still enjoyed it). My point is that I am sure there are slow-paced, non-flashy modern games if overstimulation is a concern. If not, I can invite myself to piss off.
“Hit by a pitch” wow this has unlocked some memories I forgot I had . Also I had a freeing who swore she played a snail game on her master system and we tried all day to get it to work and I never believed her lol
Great summary video, thanks! Golvellius at 13:50 is a favorite adventure game. Plenty of games I didn't know were released in the US, as finding them at stores was often hit or miss back then.
Great video, loved your opinions (other than psycho fox lol) and the additional information such as needing glasses or gun only, and master system pad etc was very useful.. top job Sir!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Ghost House was the first game I played on Christmas morning 1988. My dad knew his onions so he bought two second hand systems that came with a load of games, cost as much as one new system with about 2 games. Me and my bro had a system each and about 6 games on Christmas morning. Genius.
I'm unsure where the onion expertise comes in. Did he trade a bunch of quality onions for the console? Onions are chock full of folic acid, which is great for your colon, but I'm not sure where onion knowledge comes into picking out good used games deals?
This video is PHENOMENAL. I never had Master System growing up, so outside of a few classics, most of it's library has remained a total mystery to me. Just having exposure to all of these games makes me feel like I've filled a hole in my retro game knowledge a bit!
Another amazing video Joe! Game Sack should easily have at the very least 1 million subscribers but for some reason people would rather watch crap over high quality informative videos. A video I would really enjoy seeing is a review of every PS1 game released in the US. Of course I realize that is basically impossible seeing how there are someone around 1,278 US PS1 games. Even at 20 seconds per review that would end up being over 7 hours of video! Not to mention the work of capturing footage from each of the games. I had an idea to make a youtube series where I'd randomly pick games from the NTSC PS1 release list and review a new one every day until I got through them all. I still would kind of like to do it but I'd most likely get 1,000 views per video at best. Probably more like 150! It would be fun but idk.
As a big SMS enthusiast, this video absolutely rocks, cool to hear your take on these games. Like any system, the SMS has some really bad games, but there are many super stellar games on here for the time, and a bunch that are still fun to play today. Yes Penguin Land is a puzzle game. It's definitely one of my favorite games on here (top 20). But you have to like puzzle games. Psycho Fox has momentum issues in the controls but once you get used to it it's a pretty cool game. Aztec Adventure is a quirky, overlooked action/adventure game. The bribing mechanic doesn't really work and I think this is where some people stop playing, but you don't have to use this mechanic at all and then it's just a challenging overhead action game that takes some perseverance.
Originally found your channel randomly 5 some odd years ago talking about the master system.Years later we go full circle back with the master system! Awesome :D!
James "Buster" Douglas Knockout Boxing, George Foreman's KO Boxing, Heavyweight Champ and Rocky are almost the same game with some reskins/tweaks here and there. Well for sure you did miss many good games of the SMS in the USA back then. No Wonder Boy in Monster World, Bubble Bobble, Streets of Rage games, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic Chaos, Ninja Gaiden, Land of Illusion, Aladdin, Star Wars, Sagaia, RoboCop Versus The Terminator, Road Rash, Rainbow Islands, Prince of Persia, Power Strike II, Mortal Kombat games, Master of Darkness, Lucky Dime Caper, Ecco the Dolphin, Deep Duck Trouble, Chuck Rock II, Batman Returns, Asterix games, Alien 3, T2: The Arcade Game, Speedball games, Smash TV, New Zealand Story, Micro Machines and many more...
I watch so many videos that I turn off after awful editing, terrible scripting, off-putting delivery, misinformation, or any number of other things that indicate I might be wasting my time. I have watched The Sack since the beginning, watching and rewatching most of your content. Thanks for sticking with it, Joe. You are damn good at this. It's amazing that I still find your output so consistenly engaging, considering you are a such a Sega fanboy and Nintendo is far superior.
Cool episode to watch. I still have my original MS. Me and my brothers spent hours on it, especially on the 2 player games like double dragon, scramble spirits and secret command (I was waiting for that one in the video to find out it is called Rambo in the US lol). And of course Shinobi (best MS title imo) and Sonic. Keep it up!
Awesome video! Not only the best Game Sack video I've been but also one of the best retro gaming videos ever, period. Takes me back... Master System was the console that introduced gaming into my life. I'm from Europe but I of course remember many of these games.
Both a friend and I had Master Systems and I can remember playing a fair few of the games you slag and enjoying them - Great Football, California Games, Great Golf and World Soccer (as it was known here in England): of course, we were about seven/eight years old and were just amazed to be able to play games in such variations of colour that our humble ZX Spectrums could never conjure. Cali Games at least has the honour of being my first exposure to 'Louie Louie', if nothing else. Excellent work, Sir!
@@GameSack Maybe Neo Geo some day? It's such an illusive console to most. I don't think people would mind some emulating and stuff since it's so pricey.
Dang, with a library like that, it's no wonder I never knew about the Master System till the mid 90s. Props to you Joe for putting this massive video together!
In general the SMS looks good but the palette is awfully saturated and the best looking games are on the NES when the graphics made the most out of the system, for example Kirby's Adventure
Top tier games on the NES, such as Ninja Gaiden II, Kirby, or Bucky O'Hare, had graphical effects that put the Master System to shame. Not that the SMS couldn't do similar effects, but sadly, no one ever made as much effort to actually put them to use there.
@@monolyth421 There is a reciprocal complaint against the NES for is desaturated color palette. It's kind of silly either way, since both systems use CRT monitors, and any decent set should be able to adjust its saturation to your personal preference.
Thank you so much for making this! Freaking fantastic video & a great reference to know what games to try! I would LOVE to see you do a follow-up where you cover all of the Japanese & European games that didn't come out here, as some of the best games for the system only came out in those regions.
@@ostiariusalpha look at the differences in Rampage too. With games like Strider and Ghouls N Ghosts, Capcom was like, yeah, let’s just make a whole different game or not even try while Sega was like we can port this stuff.
Great video. I can't imagine all the work put into it. I only briefly owned an SMS, but I enjoyed the time I had with it. Seeing games I didn't even remember till now was a trip.
Wow! This must have been a huge labor of love. Thanks, much appreciated. I've never played the Master System, or even knew anyone who had it. It was nice seeing all the games that I missed out on. Hope to see more of these reviews for other consoles too in the future.
Dude that Monopoly AI was FAR from boring. Get to the point where you’re about to beat the game and it ACTUALLY throws a tantrum, sells all its properties and quits!
Why is everyone obsessed with that Donald guy? I barely notice when I'm watching an episode, whether it contains this Daryl guy or not. Especially as I skip over the parts that show actual human beans, because I don't want to look at people. Anyway, I barely notice if Drake is in a video or not, and I don't feel any need to pay someone money, almost as if I was going to a prostitute, in Nevada. I don't miss Damien, I barely noticed that he exists. Chill out. If a guy wants to spend more time with his family, then it's clearly not something money can fix, and what a shallow human bean you are to think it's all based on money.
Btw I'm not sure if its on all of the Sms but missile defense 3d was built into our system if you booted it with no cartridge. We didn't find this out until owing it for over a couple years.
Great video. I guess I’m pretty in agreement except maybe for the oddest titles. Me and my friends had tons of fun with Pro Wrestling. It had a nice move set. Tennis actually was very good. And I probrably liked Alien Syndrome and Quartet more than you did.
Considering the number of titles that require a SMS controller I think it's time the aftermarket makes a new gamepad for the platform. Genesis D-pad and a more rounded shape, that would be sweet. Although maybe a GEN/SMS combo is more likely, add a mode switch.

Or , at least , every other Saturday night . Except when there are bonus episodes .
sunday noon for me
Great video, loved your opinions (other than psycho fox lol) and the additional information such as needing glasses or gun only, and master system pad etc was very useful.. top job Sir!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Wow this is excellent. Thanks for covering so many games that are rarely (if ever) discussed.
Amesomly ambitious Joe. No sleep for the weary! Amazing how you are able to keep such consistent quality after all these years and now flying solo.
@@Boogie_the_cat exactly
2:42 WHAT!!? YOU CAN JUMP ON WALLS??? I never attempted it! Time to try that.
I'd love to see you do all-console reviews for other systems, like the Neo Geo!
Awesome episode. Kudos to joe for the task and commitment. Long live the Master System!!
Legit favorite episode! Thanks for what had to of been a month or more of work! Love this. I grew up on EGM paragraph reviews.
This video is PHENOMENAL. I never had Master System growing up, so outside of a few classics, most of it's library has remained a total mystery to me. Just having exposure to all of these games makes me feel like I've filled a hole in my retro game knowledge a bit!
OMG what a feat Joe! I love compilations, and this is special af!
Appreciate all the work you did to make this video, it was rly cool to see all these games. Great job!
Great watch just a few weeks after i got my Mega Everdrive and being able to enjoy Master System games for the first time
As a big SMS enthusiast, this video absolutely rocks, cool to hear your take on these games.
I was the weirdo on the block with a Master System. I absolutely loved Cloud Master and RC Grand Prix.
I love Cloud Master. So underrated. Love the feel of the Japanese type games like The Ninja, Kensiden and Black Belt
Joe, just reading the title of this episode... Your insane! And that's why we love ya! Keep up the great work!!!!
He also missed Dynamite Dux
This is one of the best videos you have ever made. Now please make a 12 hour video with each game covered in depth, and I can die a happy man.
Such a great episode, i really really like these compilation ones where you review a lot of games, great job!
One of the best episodes this fantastic show has to offer. Loved the 3D reverb.
Thanks very much for this episode and the skill / time invested in its creation!
This is the best concept for a video I've seen in hours. Kudos.
This is an excellent idea for a vid. Would love to see more like this, even if it has to be multi-part episodes to cover all of the NES etc.
yaaaaas
Yes !!!!
yeah
I plan on doing all US TurboGrafx games the next time I do something like this (both HuCard and CD).
I'm fron Brazil and your Channel is marvelous. For me master system is the best ever
This was my first console had the ms1 at my grandma's and ms2 at my house. Loved this console so much, still my joint favourite with PS1
Saturday nights are right for GAMESACK!
Haha enjoy! Sunday morning for me. Ideal breakfast content with a side dish of coffee and some wake n bake. Have a great weekend!
Sunday afternoon for me
I like this being in alphabetical order very comprehensive. I'd love to see this as a series maybe a evolution of Sega? I'd watch that.
25:20
Hehe, no matter how much of a stretch they often are, Joe's "did you just say 'tit?'" always gets a chuckle out of me 😂
LOL
Aaa nothing can beat Sunday morning with new game sack episode
I never saw a Sega master system irl but it looks so much better than my NES was, graphically at least.
The NES would explode if it tried to play some of these games I think.
R-Type would melt the NES.
@@ostiariusalpha look at the differences in Rampage too. With games like Strider and Ghouls N Ghosts, Capcom was like, yeah, let’s just make a whole different game or not even try while Sega was like we can port this stuff.
@@DrGamelove The NES could have matched the SMS version of Rampage, it just got a straight up bad port.
I'm always impressed by the colour palette of the Master System
me too, some games looks almost 16 bits
Great video. I can't imagine all the work put into it. I only briefly owned an SMS, but I enjoyed the time I had with it. Seeing games I didn't even remember till now was a trip.
I used to play the ninja all the time when I was growing up. The boss is so cool
I really hope this one does well so we can get a TG16/CD version! :)
Wow! This must have been a huge labor of love. Thanks, much appreciated. I've never played the Master System, or even knew anyone who had it. It was nice seeing all the games that I missed out on. Hope to see more of these reviews for other consoles too in the future.
This is epic! As a master system mega fanboy, it is always great to see the system getting some love. Thanks for all the hard work!
I love it too, the library on it was a way better good games to bad ratio than the Nintendo
Awesome to hear your thoughts on so many great titles for the Master System. I forgot how Zillion's button maps are backward. Great video!
Im just gonna give this a like before I even watch it because I can feel its awesomeness. How much combined Mega Power is this?
Still the only person on UA-cam who knows how to place the ads well.
Dude that Monopoly AI was FAR from boring. Get to the point where you’re about to beat the game and it ACTUALLY throws a tantrum, sells all its properties and quits!
Joe, you missed Dynamite Dux. That was a U.S. game, ported from the arcade
Always looking forward to these late Saturday/Sunday posts! You're one of the few old school UA-camrs left who has totally sold out.
Hasn't?
You might wanna edit your comment
few? Other than Game Sack ,who else?
One of my brothers got the master system when it came out. It had lots of great games that we played a lot! Love this system.
You should do this for the PS2 so I can watch you go mad
What a robust episode to enjoy this Sunday afternoon!
I would crowd-fund an effort to bring Dave back to a few more episodes
Why is everyone obsessed with that Donald guy?
I barely notice when I'm watching an episode, whether it contains this Daryl guy or not. Especially as I skip over the parts that show actual human beans, because I don't want to look at people.
Anyway, I barely notice if Drake is in a video or not, and I don't feel any need to pay someone money, almost as if I was going to a prostitute, in Nevada.
I don't miss Damien, I barely noticed that he exists.
Chill out. If a guy wants to spend more time with his family, then it's clearly not something money can fix, and what a shallow human bean you are to think it's all based on money.
man that super mario bros 3 really threw me off for a second there. thanks joe
Wow, what an undertaking. Kudos to you buddy. 👏
I’m 28 seconds into this video and I’m so fucking excited! The Sega Master system is my absolute favorite retro system!
4:02 im pretty sure I have the NES version of this game. The first NES game I ever got actually...
