Switch Online 6 Years Later: Finally Worth It?

  • Nintendo Switch Online is Nintendo’s paid online service for the Switch, the successor to Nintendo Network and ‘competitor’ to Playstation network and Xbox Live. Since its announcement in early 2017, it’s been a subject of great controversy. Playing games online on Nintendo consoles had previously been free, and now we’re expected to pay for it?
    To be honest, I think more people should have seen it coming. Microsoft unfortunately started the trend of consoles charging users for playing online with the original Xbox, and Sony followed in their footsteps with the launch of the PS4. It was inevitable that Nintendo would jump on eventually.
    So they did
    During the Nintendo switch press conference in 2017, Nintendo revealed the service to the disappointment of many. However, there was hope that this could still end up being a good thing overall. Nintendo has never been known for their amazing online services previously. Xbox and playstation both had features like messaging, party systems, voice chat, and game invitations which are now seen as pretty basic online gaming standards. Nintendo on the other hand was missing some of these, with the others being done in a clunky way or inconsistently.
    For example, on the Wii U you could video call friends, but only in a specific app which can’t be open at the same time as any games. Certain games would support voice chat, but how it worked depended on what they decided for each game. So in games like smash bros and Mario kart you could talk to your friends while in the lobby, but not while actually playing for some reason. The Wii U did have Miiverse, which was pretty cool (sometimes) and allowed you to message your friends in a more convientent way than back on the Wii. The 3DS also had miiverse but you couldn’t message friends through it, and friends had to be added through randomly generated friend codes rather than your custom username. See what I mean about inconsistency?
    So, while there was of course disappointment that Nintendo was charging for online now, there was definitely hope that they would finally get with the times and provide a modern robust service like the other consoles did. They also promised us the now infamous switch online app for voice chat, play appointments, and the fact that NES and SNES games would be available for subscribers to download. This was a disappointing right from the start, as it implied that virtual console would not be returning on Switch.
    At the time, while I was let down that switch online was going to paid, the promise of basically anything new regarding the switch was exciting. I was so used to how it all worked on Wii U that the idea of a fresh, new, modern service was quite appealing, and I’m sure others felt the same.

    I think Nintendo should’ve really promoted the online play aspect a lot more. That’s honestly a huge addition to these retro games. Playing Mario Party 1-3 online without needing to set up netplay on an emulator is pretty big, for example. Yet it barely seems to be mentioned in the marketing

    it really is SO strange that the switch doesn't have themes, to me the expansion plan would be worth it if they just add themes bc I almost spent real money on buying a 3d printed jailbreaking thingy, especially w smartphones becoming even more customizable it feels like several steps back to just have light + dark. no chat features is also insane, I have so many memories of playing around in pictochat w my friends, it seems like maybe they realized w miiverse they needed more/better mods and they didn't feel like paying for it so they just got rid of chat altogether

    I think one of the biggest missed opportunities is not having other SEGA consoles. Genesis games are rereleased so frequently, that most of the ones included with Switch Online are available elsewhere.
    Dreamcast and Saturn games almost NEVER get reissued in the same way. Dreamcast especially has lots of really amazing games that could benefit from being on an online service. Leaderboards for games like Crazy Taxi, online support for Phantasy Star etc.
    It’s a really big missed opportunity, and given the lack of those more modern SEGA platforms anywhere besides Steam, it would give Nintendo something truly unique.
    Otherwise, my only other big gripes are the lack of basic features. Why can’t I message my friends or have parties like I can on other platforms? Why can’t I gift my friends eshop games like I could on the Wii? Why is online still pretty hit or miss?
    The extras are nice, but I feel they come across a little hollow without the basic framework being solid. If Nintendo actually fixed that and had party chat capabilities and online function that rivals the other platforms, I dare say that they would be the best since the extras they give you are genuinely solid.

It wasn’t until the N64 games had doubled and the GBA was added that it started to feel like it had a decent amount of value. Thankfully by that time I was able to split the cost of the service with 5 other friends which made the cost significantly better. That’s the only way I think I could justify paying for it.

    This outrageous price for such a limited choice of games was the final straw for me. 100% anti-consumerist. I very quickly went back to emulation since smartphones can run all of these games without a problem nowadays. You can back up your saves and move files quickly through the cloud between devices now. And history + research has proven, objectively, that the Internet has done a better job at video game preservation than the damned capitalists who are willing to trash anything that won't make them a fast buck so that they can push some new game with some half-assed DLC more expensive than the base game.
    There's literally no reason for Nint*ndo to not have some exclusive PC/smartphone-based marketplace with most of their titles for sale. It's like they're being run by fools who don't understand how to make real money, and then they'll probably go cry about falling stock prices in a few years, as always, with some "surprised Pikachu face" or something.
    Moreover, the rise of Retro Achievements has really changed the game here, too, by adding features that Nint*ndo is literally just too lazy or incompetent to implement. Dudes in their basements can literally make better games and features these days compared to lackluster staff who are probably working 80 hours a week just to afford some instant ramen and pocket cash to walk around Akihabara or something. I guess this is what happens when you let huge corporations milk our favorite IPs dry for 30 years, holding even characters like poor Toad in their death grip until the end.

    Is it worth it from a conceptual standpoint? Yes. Is it great? No. The biggest draw is that it made certain experiences officially available worldwide, meaning you can finally play stuff like the japanese version of Metroid Fusion or exclusives without import-shenanagans or piracy. The emulation for Gameboy and Gameboy Advance is pretty good and they offer other perks as a bonus.
    However, this is just looking at it isolated. if I had the choice between just reverting to how it was on the Wiiu or keeping it this way, I would honestly take virtual console and free online. It is not like they particularly do anything special from a pure game-perspective here(Like patching in translations for the games) to warrant this even being a service charging us 40 bucks a year for temporary access, they simply should have started giving us multilingual options in the eShop like I have seen them do with Pokemon Gen 1 on 3DS. I would be singing a diffrent tune if the previously mentioned bonus-perks weren't the *only* thing needing the service to function. If your main offering has no business being an offering, you built the menu wrong.

    Honestly, since last summer, the biggest seller for me has been the profile icons. Due to their hesitance to add icons for anything more niche than Star Fox, or not seen as first party Nintendo, I never had a profile picture I really resonated with on the console, and used stuff like an Inkling, Samus, and Mechanica as my icons. With NSO finally adding Xenoblade icons, I finally have something to make my profile feel like my profile. I use a Xenoblade pfp on all four of my accounts now, and it’s great. Fire Emblem and Pokemon getting batches is nice too, though I missed one of my favorite FE characters because I slacked for a week. The thing I think most people really don't understand with NSO is that it is paid. Sure Nintendo Network was in many respects terrible when compared to XBL or PSN. But it achieved what it set out to do, and it was free. A lot of the things that NN didn't have that XBL and PSN did, could be excused by the fact that NN is Free. The Fact that NSO is paid, and yet isn't in a much better spot than NN is, is really jarring.

    Considering the Game Boy and GBA emulators have been available for so long and we still haven't seen original classics such as the first Super Mario Land, it's really quite unfortunate. Nintendo recently added two Golden Sun games to NSO, so I do have hope that they will add many other classics still missing from the online service. Personally, I didn't purchase the expansion pack until there was more of a reason to do so. Having access to Online Play, NES, SNES, N64, GB, GBA, and Sega Genesis emulators, Animal Crossing DLC, Splatoon 2 DLC, Mario Kart DLC, and more with the "premium" tier is honestly not horrible. However, Nintendo really should give us more exclusive features and dlc to make the price a little more worth it. In regards to Gamecube and Wii coming to NSO, I think we'll DEFINITELY have to wait for Switch 2. Speaking of which, Nintendo should automatically launch the console with all of the retro games already available on Switch 1. It may sound far-fetched simply because they didn't do this when launching the Switch, however, I would argue that's because the Virtual Console feature on Wii U and 3ds was completely different from the NSO feature on Switch. Nintendo started with a clean slate and I think it's only fair for us consumers to expect them to keep going from here:)

    I mean emulation is pretty easy for the games offered on the expansion pack. And Nintendo themselves are emulating those games on the switch.
    Anything from the gamecube/wii and below takes like 2 mins to setup, even less for the handheld games.
    And from the N64 and below even 2002 PCs can run games smoothly with 1gb of RAM and a 2GHz CPU.
    As you said the games are a nice bonus but getting the pass for them is up to argument.

    We'd get the best of both worlds if they keep adding older console games yet to be added like Wii or DS AND they had the guts to release them available for purchase.
    I'd happily buy a physical Switch cartridge that has all the SNES games for instance.
    Imagine if they did that with every console.
    Easy money, and everyone happy.

    As of the time I wrote this comment, F-ZERO X on N64 Switch Online still has frameskipping issues and a ridiculously high control stick sensitivity rendering it near unplayable vs playing on the original hardware. (Even the NSO N64 controller has too high a sensitivity, but is more bearable due to the button layout being more familiar)

    Call me stupid, but honestly the one thing keeping me from truly "maining" my Switch is the lack of an achievement system. I enjoy playing games and being rewarded with an achievement or trophy as I play or having a reason to go back to a game because, "I didn't get that one achievement yet". Achievements add so much replayability to games (if you're an achievement hunter) and can cause you to, ironically, save money because you may play a game that takes 15 hours to finish for 30hrs because you're trying to complete a singular goal. Nintendo needs to add a larger sense of community to the Switch (and future releases) by having game hubs for developer activity, groups for specific games, friends activity and many other community options.

    I would LOVE to be able to send messages and screenshots to my friends. I feel Nintendo prioritized having a fast, small system UI because of the lack of storage and ram on the console. I feel like it's going to be alot better on the next system. Also I have 8 people on my family plan so I pay like $10 for over 200 games with online play! It's awesome. I feel like if I was a kid with easy access to such great games would have been awesome. All of the games on the genesis app are BANGERS and super fun online!

    Id be happy to pay them thoose 15€ a Year but for that i cant make any new friends online on the switch its like i play against Bots with Human skill since there is no Personality behind a Gamertag on Switch since i cant interact with them.

    What do you mean by “unfortunately starting the trend” Xbox created console online networks. It wasn’t a trend that was the groundwork for the entire online system. It’s regrettable that Sony and Nintendo followed suit but the standard was to pay for online.

    • @thtpopo
      @thtpopo 10 місяців тому +3

      Nintendo and SEGA both had very primitive online services throughout the mid-late 90s (SNES SatelliView, SEGANet, SEGA Channel, X-Band) while Xbox did not create online services but they brought it into the mainstream with the release of Halo: Combat Evolved in 2001. Even back then, Nintendo is mirroring themselves and using obsolete technology and relying on their legacy content and exclusives for a now paid service… which sucks, but at least Microsoft was ahead of their time with backwards compatibility and GamePass/media and streaming services !!!

    If we are talking purely about playing online, it is not, the games and connections are not stable enough. The games themselves were good and most are exclusivities. But since some games based the experience on online play, it was almost a forced necessity, like the Splatoon games, Mario Maker 2, and a few others.
    But if we talk about the other things it gives access, it definitively is. NES, SNES and GB Online contain so many games that make it worth it. The service was already at a low price compared to similar services, but with the mountain of other things it gives access, it's almost dumb to not take it (depending of the games one has, wants and the way he plays).
    Now, there is the + Expansion Pack, at launch, it wasn't worth it, like AT ALL. It only was N64, Genesis and the GBA Online, but the price was so much higher compared to the other it wasn't worth it, more than double the price for not that much more content.
    But now, we get so many free things for buying it once, including the whole MK8DX DLC, the Octo Expansion, AC stuff and more. Buying the + Expansion Pack will always be worth it the first time one buys it unless one already bought most of the free things, but passed the second one, an argument can be made.
    But now, if you used the service once, psychologically, you don't want to loose access to what you had in the past, so you will never want to stop taking it, at least until the Switch dies, and we know it's gonna take a very long time.
    I consider if you are gonna buy NSO, you might as well take the NSO + EP. But that is my opinion.

    • @lpfan4491
      @lpfan4491 10 місяців тому

      I don't even have those games, so the perk of "borrowing" the DLC is sadly lost on me, I legitimately only got the expansion to get access to N64 and GBA.

    • @MaximeLafreniere433

      I get that, and honestly, that's also the main reason why I got it. I already had the Octo Expansion and I don't play AC. At least the MK8DX stuff was on my list of thing to get.
      But I don't think you "borrow" the free stuff... I'm pretty sure you keep them even after the end of the subscription. Guess I'll see in a few months anyway.

  • @zomfragger
    @zomfragger 9 місяців тому +1

    What most don't realize is that reason for nintendo's lack luster launch of games for the online service is two reasons.
    Reason number one Nintendo screwed up on future distribution rights of titles sold under a current system. Since the ps2 and xbox 360 era sony and Microsoft saw that with an online store people are going to buy older titles on newer hardware thus made sure that older games are still available on newer hardware via the online store. Nintendo didn't do this instead focused on sales for that specific system. This came to bite them with point number 2
    Reason 2 The majority of games people liked aren't nintendo property. Games like golden eye, banjo kaszui, and pokemon aren't owned by nintendo and nintendo only has rights to distribute those games on the original hardware they were designed for. Meaning for nintendo to re-release games like pokemon or banjo they have to get permission from rare (now part of Microsoft) and game freak for systems like the switch.

    whilst i like the inclusion of mega drive (or genesis for you yanks) on the expansion pass, it really isn’t needed. there’s enough sega compilations dating back to the ps2, and there’s a load already on switch anyway (and on pc which is way better as the compilation is free, you just gotta buy the roms which you can do whatever you want with them, like sticking them in an emulator and applying mods ect). it’s just a waste of £50 and it’s the least used app on my switch. why they couldn’t put gamecube on there instead as well as n64 baffles me as they have gc controller compatibility but barely anything is used for it. if you want switch online just go for the cheaper standard version imo.

      It’s not a way of £50 for me because a lot of these mega drive games are expensive to buy, especially for me as someone who owns an actual mega drive but doesn’t a lot of the games on Nintendo Switch Online due to the existent prices. So for me it’s an absolute godsend to be able to play these games like beyond the Oasis so no, I think that alone is worth it for me and of course having access to the SNES NES, and N64 as well as GBA games on the ads to the value for me, especially as someone who grew up with the mega drive. That’s may need the reason I even got the online expansion.
