This is the first, and most overlooked, animated series from the award-winning creative team of Chris Prynoski and George Krstic.
This critically acclaimed, reality-based, animated series follows the lives of Alex and Chaka, a brother and sister pair of polar opposites, as well as their East Village friends. A funny, trippy and often surreal take on modern life in the city, Downtown portrays the intersecting lives of a group of diverse characters who live, work, and play in the greatest town in the world - NYC.

Honestly both Jen and her roommate are pretty mean spirited. Leia full on pointed out Jen being short and overweight, she’s also dishonest with her lovers. Jen is a self-destructive personality and is clearly trying to cope with self-consciousness. They aren’t meant to be fully likable, just human

Jen just assumes the worst in people and honestly I find it entertaining.
They're not her lovers; they're her fuck-toys. A lover is someone you're lovingly devoted to.

It seems that Jen just hates everything to the point where it's ridiculous. Leia genuinely tries to bring her into the greater world, and give her a good time or give her the opportunity to do stuff and Jen just craps all over it. Meanwhile Alex is kinda coming out of his shell, exploring unexplored areas of himself. Jen is just stagnating imo and it's not doing her any good.

I can't stand her. Also when she called the business woman a hooker, her bitterness was showing. I don't find her likeable at all.
That's kinda the point of the character. She's not really supposed to be 100% likeable. Her dislike towards some women might have to do with how she was treated in high school and her dislike towards Serena is mostly because she fears that Alex will leave her for her. Not in the "love" sense but losing the only friend she had since she's not close with anyone else save for maybe Goat but her and Alex were friends since high school.
I feel like if the show got a second season, we more than likely would've gotten some episodes where we saw what high school was like for her and Alex and could've explained more about why she's so cynical.

Hate him? He's tried to live his life peacefully yet people constantly drag him into doing things he's not comfortable doing just for the sake of “being different”. Every character besides him has major issues they don't recognize but Alex is somehow to blame since he's just a nerdy dude? That's wack.

Considering the voice actress for jen(Tammy Lang) does cabaret, it makes sense she has an amazing singing voice and morphs into that persona pretty seamlessly

Goat is like the Kramer of this show.
He's a self insert; he is the exact same character in Megas XLR (which takes place in Jersey!) and runs the junkyard Coop buys his mech from. It's fun because each show has a throw away line close to "wow hey what do you even do when you're not hanging out with us" and Goat says "yeah I have other friends" and it's an indirect reference to the other show, and each set of characters blows it off like "psh whatever you don't have any other friends they're imaginary, you lame"

This shows very cool and accurate, I'm an old guy now, divorced, a few long-term relationships, nobody loved women more than me but I quit trying to make them work, I just can't say one more time, "idk what'd you wanna do" or the popular "how was your day", and the, come home on a good mood only to be met with a bad mood that I have to join on on because I'm empathetic, can't be all smiles while your significant other is brooding, so I quit, I live alone, what a waste but I'm mostly sane at the price of loneliness, but it passes.
