MTV's Downtown, Episode 03: Hot Spot

- Loved by critics. Adored by fans. Cancelled by MTV.
Welcome to Downtown.
This is the first, and most overlooked, animated series from the award-winning creative team of Chris Prynoski and George Krstic.
This critically acclaimed, reality-based, animated series follows the lives of Alex and Chaka, a brother and sister pair of polar opposites, as well as their East Village friends. A funny, trippy and often surreal take on modern life in the city, Downtown portrays the intersecting lives of a group of diverse characters who live, work, and play in the greatest town in the world - NYC.
Based in Hollywood, Titmouse has quickly gone from an underground animation nerd collective to a world-renowned animation studio. Check them out at: www.titmouse.net
Enjoy the show? Then why not take a look at the promotional DVD! It's loaded with interviews, behind the scenes footage, production art and commentary, and is the ultimate (and only) Downtown collection out there! Details of obtaining the DVD can be found here: chrisprynoski.b...

Really enjoying watching these again. I used to be a sound recordist/editor and mixer, and was, for "Downtown" among other things. As others have mentioned the cast was mostly non-professionals - although it was scripted we encouraged improvisation once we had good takes of the script. It was a group effort and a LOT of work getting those performances, but the naturalness shows. Ultimately the show was cancelled because a VP at MTV pushed for their pet project instead - which flopped ("Spy Groove"). So glad to see people still enjoying it!!
Hola, Me podrías dar los scripts de los episodios sin importar que sean los finales? Encontré el script del episodio 1 y aunque no fue el final me ayudó a muchísimo a traducir el episodio y subtitularlo, sería de gran ayuda si me ofrecieses el material

It's not what they said it's how they said it. Beautifully done if you ask me.
“The bigger the booty the more for fruity”😭 my new fav quote
The most unrealistic thing about this series is that Alex and Jen work as shop clerks and manage to live in apartment in NY. Jen has a roommate but Alex pays for that studio all on his own. Even in 2000, that was impossible.
Rent control
he gets paid ten dollars an hour. and his apartment is very dirty and like worse than the other rooms. im sure they gave him a deal for the room due to the last person.
nah that wasnt impossible, it just depended on where you lived. i hear anecdotes from family members all the time
am guessing the landlord was very kind
10 bucks is about 18.06 today, meaning by today's standard he's probably pulling 1k a week, with overtime. That's just about enough for a shitty apartment in 1999.
Why this hasn’t made a comeback is freaking beyond me
Me too undergrads is making a comeback so is clone high

Edit: you people were right Jesus Christ Jen and Chaka collapse in this episode. I still like them but wow just wow.

@@WocklessGamingforAnimeMoms Daria
@@WocklessGamingforAnimeMoms that's hard because there really weren't many shows like Downtown when it came to borderline realistic dialogue. Daria has good satire and somewhat a similar feel to this. I'd also recommend Mission Hill, it has a similar atmosphere followiing 4 young adults (one of which a nerdy teenager) and them navigating through life in the city. The main character isn't really nerdy like Alex but he is stuck in a job he hates lol. The show also has a 90s feel to it since it came out in 2000.
@@WocklessGamingforAnimeMoms undergrads
Home movies. It's similar to this show dialogue wise
The way that retail spot transitioned from an old school dive bar to a hip underground club, and finally a gentrifying yuppie lounge is so emblematic of NYC in the 1990s.
Back when kids who had older siblings could go missing for days and not get the cops involved. Ahhhhh the late 90s early 00's
As long as the sibling found a way to call and let u know everything was cool. Like how back in the 60s kids could go for a walk or ride their bikes when the sun went down. They didn't have to worry about ending up on the back of a milk carton.
You know it
@@slanetroyard92 bruh you are so naive to the 90s and the 60s. At those times kids would get missing much more than nowadays just say you fantasize the "olds days" and leave
@@Mylifeisperfect190 Yeah back then there were countless children who went missing and ended up being victims of horrible people. That's how Jeffrey Dahmer got many of his victims. Everyone assumed the kids ran away or were probably out with friends and didn't bother looking for them.. Those good old days never actually happened.
@@Mylifeisperfect190frr a serial killer named dean corll had all of his victims vanish from a small part of houston tx and even after nearly 60 young boys went missing the police was like "uhm theyre runaways"... nobody cared, the police didnt care. and that was the early 70s. it was way more risky to disappear, when parents wanted to report law enforcement didnt take it seriously

@@damiengomez581 shes funny so people see it that way. Ive met people like this in real life and it gets old quick. Hating everything as a personality trait is annoying. I promise.
@@Faaade_ Shes a perfect example of how hypocritical everyone can be, even if they think they're on different sides, we're all just people living with our personal demons. And Jen cannot see that. Her view on the world is a paradox in itself. That's just her dealing with her own personal demons. But the thing is, she's afraid to really be herself on the outside out of fear of being like one of "them". Jens a very forthright, blunt, but stubborn, girl with deep insecurities. She realizes this but refuses to understand the other side, how hypocritical her hate statements are. Jen is a lot more tolerable than Chaka. I think the reason why people find Jen a tad annoying is because she has a bit of that "I'm not like other girls" attitude with a clinical hipster vibe, due to seeing a lot of those uptown fashionistas and trust fund hipsters.

I know a lot of people are quick to brand Jen as a “I’m not like other girls type of girl.” But growing up in the 2000’s...the archetype of women was you were either skinny (I’m talking size 0) and hot or you were worthless. We’ve come a long way in terms of celebrating and accepting different types of women NOW, but back then it was exhausting. I don’t blame her attitude at all. There wasn’t really any social media that promoted body positivity. You were at the mercy of whatever was in magazines or on tv.
Thank you. It's a little annoying how people are saying that she's a hater and "not like other girls" type but it's mostly because the ones complaining are younger and didn't live through the 90s and/or early 2000s when heroine chic was the look that was being touted as most attractive for women to look like, the whole Kate moss look. Jen's attitude was a reaction to that mentality when it was more relevant. Before social media and all that.
It’s almost like they’re perceiving a time period that they did not grow up in with a modern lens. I personally was not a teen in the 90s but it’s quite obvious Jen is supposed to be the “against the herd” archetype. That’s all, she’s just a character.

Talking about being vegan even all these yrs before😗 wow
veganism has been "hip" for decades. it was even hip in the 80's with all of the damm yuppies, and in the 70's with all of the hippies and revolutionaries.
The vegan society was formed in 1944, and there have been various episodes of 'trendy' veganism since then as Joey described. The society gains members during these periods, although a lot of them leave when that particular episode of fashionable veganism does. Of course at the current time the 'hipsters' have predominantly adopted it, at least for a while.

Back when this was released, Jen's attitude was known as sassy and funny lol. I guess these days the culture is more about finding reasons to be offended and "you can't tell me how to live my life even if it's shitty" so people find her to be a hater. Chaka always made me wish I had a sister, she has so much energy and actually gets along with Alex better than it seems sometimes. I have a younger brother but we were never particularly close growing up so I envy how close they are. Weird name though, I don't think anyone ever named their kid that. It's like they took some random Arabic words in Chaka and Mecca and slapped them on there.
They’re not “finding a reason to be offended”, the critiques they have of her are valid, the only reason you feel otherwise is bc you relate to them…
I don’t think people are finding reasons to be offended when it comes to Jen, it’s just that having someone beat down on u like that all the time is annoying. Even Alex realizes that.
I think Chaka is a nickname.
Youth culture right now is horribly conformist. I think Gen Z and late Millennials grew up in a monoculture that was the product of social media… never really experiencing any true “counterculture” phenomena. Right now it’s hip to deride a person who bucks trends as a “pick me.” Honestly, it’s a very stifling environment. The attitudes of 2020s are replicating those of the 1950s and 1980s in their hostility toward individuality.
