This is the first, and most overlooked, animated series from the award-winning creative team of Chris Prynoski and George Krstic.
This critically acclaimed, reality-based, animated series follows the lives of Alex and Chaka, a brother and sister pair of polar opposites, as well as their East Village friends. A funny, trippy and often surreal take on modern life in the city, Downtown portrays the intersecting lives of a group of diverse characters who live, work, and play in the greatest town in the world - NYC.

Mekka and matt are the most lovable character of the entire series
jen is literally such an awful friend who gets off belittling her best friend. at least alex has the self respect and maturity to acknowledge that and asks jen to leave.
then jen admits she has issues that are way worse than attachment to a cookie monster pillow ... and gets the door slammed in her face. its really sobering to see lots of people dont empathize with jen at all, even going as far as thinking of her as a bipolar lesbian lmfao

@@2diefor not really, chaka so far in the series has been a pretty good friend. sure shes a bit self centered at times but she does seem to really care about her friends. jen on the other hand is just constantly belittling and berating alex for god knows what because she's insecure about herself. thats my .02$ atleast
@@ante646funny how she does that when he's defeated and asks her to get out. Alex clearly has self esteem issues throughout the show. She dogs on him all time. She calls him a pathetic loser whenever he tries to do anything. She certainly has issues with herself but it's no excuse to be horrible to your friends. That being said the show doesn't aim to have exactly likeable character, they're meant to be real.
I have to admit, the ending credit scene is so damn cute, as much as I like Serena, I wish Alex could have gotten with the seseme street girl

I felt bad for Alex this episode I know how it feels to have a friend make fun of your interest and things even tho they know how happy it makes you feel. But it was interesting to hear Jen say she uses sarcasm because she scared to show emotion. Aside from the moment in the Limo it was honestly the closet thing to vulnerabilty we've ever seen from her. And it explains a lot about her.

the transitions in this show are really nice
This show is so. ASMR. the sounds are sooo gooood and the voices are calming. The footstep sounds are incredible

Y'know, Alex's friend is kind of a terrible one, belittling is love interests, his hobbies, his life style, stalking his aforementioned love interest to get dirt on her (for which there was none) and getting rid of everything that meant something to him in efforts to make him more of an adult or whatever. Also what's more pathetic, a guy who has a bunch of nerdy collectable stuff and things from his childhood or a man with nothing in his apartment? Personally I'd go for the nerdy quirky guy, at least he has a personality and is funny.
I used to like Alex until I really paid attention to his character. Hes a nice guy but ALWAYS bails on bettering himself. He quit engineering school and still works at the same dead end job 4 years later. Has an opportunity to get another job and then declines. He knows he needs to work on himself but falls back into old habits 5 minutes later. The only girl he makes a real move on is Jen and thats because he sees her as aviable and possible open (to which she declines) despite him admitting to others he doesnt have any interest in her at all. The only reason he likes Serena is because of her goth look. The last episode he has a good chance with her but gets cold feet because she was abandoning the goth style. Even Goat has more integrity than Alex.
@@Afronadian The show lasted only 13 episodes. It's possible he would have gotten some character development but alas, we'll never know.
@@oktusprime3637 the creator of the show went on to create megas XLR and other shows. If you could do a bring back Downtown video like they did for undergrads it might convince him to revive the show.

@@dasdasdus Good point since the show was back in 99 the main cast would in their 30s and 40s. And most likely with kids of their own.
I always thought Chaka and Mecca were supposed to be freshman/sophomores in college but I guess they're in high school
Yea when I first started watching I felt the same way, I thought they were in between 18-20. They get sexualized quite a bit and with the way they act I thought they were college aged

Aye it was the one thing I noticed the most, hence that scene is so important to me, It reminded me of High School when I listened to a lot of Massive Attack and I had my first girlfriend, after that relationship it put me off relationships but those were some amazing times whilst it lasted, feels like a dream and listening to the mezzanine album again fills me with huge euphoria and nostalgia
This is mostly why they couldn't market a DVD or put it in syndication. Most of these MTV animations suffered the same fate. They all had sick music, but if they were to be licensed and distributed, they would have to buy the rights to ALL OF THESE SONGS. It was impossible. They were able to do it with a few very popular series like BEavis and Butthead and Daria, but they took the originals and replaced them with something else and that frequently altered the "feel" of the scene.
Downtown was never able to be monetized because it only ran for one season and was chock full of all this brand-name music.

this episode drove me crazy! jen is such a terrible friend to alex. she projects all her insecurities on him and tries to change him when really there's nothing wrong with him, he's just a little weird. but plenty of people love people like that! and chaka takes such advantage of mecca. she never addresses how rude she was and instead makes mecca save her skin yet again. i don't think anyone in this show is outwardly horrible, but i think some different friends would bring out the better in everyone.

A lot of people will pounce on Jen for being so harsh on Alex, which she was, but she did have a point. Alex does have an unhealthy attachment with his belongings and should at least get rid of most of it, save his whoopee. The problem wasn't necessarily what Jen was saying, but how she conveyed it, not taking Alex's emotions into consideration and suggesting he just get rid of things that he very clearly had a strong, yet kind of unhealthy, attachment to.
Everyone is hating on Jen so hard she's an insecure mean person out of jealousy. But Alex has been a misogynist freak the whole time the only thing cool about him is they made the goth girl actually talk to him . All the characters in this show are immature

Alex is so cute in this episode. And jen was so wrong for making him get rid of the pillow. I understand her wanting him to be more mature and take care of his living space but clearly it meant a lot to him. Also Jen isn't looking at the situation with his pillow in the perspective of a girl who would be interested in him . Because if a girl really like him she'd think it was cute and endearing that he keeps a childhood object with him for so long. I mean him calling it a "whoopi" still may be a little like weird but still probably would be endearing to a girl who genuinely liked him.Girl at the end is a perfect example of this.
I love Alex’s character he resembles and reminds me of my boyfriend so much this show has a special place in my heart for that reason
