- Loved by critics. Adored by fans. Cancelled by MTV.
Welcome to Downtown.
This is the first, and most overlooked, animated series from the award-winning creative team of Chris Prynoski and George Krstic.
This critically acclaimed, reality-based, animated series follows the lives of Alex and Chaka, a brother and sister pair of polar opposites, as well as their East Village friends. A funny, trippy and often surreal take on modern life in the city, Downtown portrays the intersecting lives of a group of diverse characters who live, work, and play in the greatest town in the world - NYC.
Based in Hollywood, Titmouse has quickly gone from an underground animation nerd collective to a world-renowned animation studio. Check them out at: www.titmouse.net
Enjoy the show? Then why not take a look at the promotional DVD! It's loaded with interviews, behind the scenes footage, production art and commentary, and is the ultimate (and only) Downtown collection out there! Details of obtaining the DVD can be found here: chrisprynoski.blogspot.co.uk/2...

this is such a comfort show
On my first rewatch as we speak
It makes me so warm and happy God i love it
Trussssssssss
It literally makes you feel like you're part of that life even though you weren't even born during that time.
frfr
this show is meant to be watched at night … it just has this nostalgic comfort .
so facts
at midnight specifically
This is the type of show you’d wake up to late night after Cartoon Network transitions into Adult Swim

YESSS I WATCH IT AT NIGHTTT
anyone else associate this show with like,,, 4am? it’s got that vibe.
Literally lmao justt woke up and it's 4:13 first thing I started watching
I’m watching it at 4am rn
It’s definitely a show for night owls
probably because the characters are nocturnal 😭
literallyyy i binged it at 1-3am
I’m in my late 20’s and I never got to experience life like this. I’m very introverted but always wanted to be social and brave so watching this show is very comforting. Make me feel less afraid to be myself
Never too late to try homie. I'm in my early 20s and a few friends and I still occasionally do tagging and stuff like this. Getting out of your comfort zone is often a very scary, yet rewarding process.
You just have to put yourself in many uncomfortable situations learn from them and eventually you’ll learn to stop caring so much and it’s very liberating
I encourage you to go out and immerse urself in the community and then make some friends
Yo I'm almost 40 and never stopped doing hood shit . It ain't to late to become ungovernable.

I've always found this episode to be the best one- just this fascinating look at the underbelly of a major city. The idea of all these legendary "taggers" in this secret alcove... it just seemed to COOL and interesting. Real "Cities of the Underworld" stuff.
Also reminded me of the documentary "Dark Days" about a now gone community of people living in abandoned/unfinished sections of the NY underground.
I have! I really thought it was cool!
Keep those recs coming. Imma watch them all.

I’ve never seen this show until yesterday. I wish they they would bring it back. I love the plots and the storylines. Everything so relatable especially in today’s society.
True! and it has a genuine vibe you don't get from "adult animation" shows these days.
lol the show was on in 99 or 2000, that wasn’t that long ago. I would hope it’s somewhat relatable lol
I know RIGHT!Its like they had a time machine!
@@elm1230 so youre saying 21/22 years is not that long
@@mrperfect9854 No it’s not. 20 years isn’t so vastly long ago that you’d see an unrecognizable society lmao its absurd to think the show wouldn’t be relatable.
Alex at the beginning is really what it feels like hitting your first tag lol
I was shocked when I first saw this episode way back when. I didn’t expect MTV to drop a graffiti episode and be as accurate as they were. Even the idea of finding old graff that hasn’t really been seen in decades is accurate. I remember a few years back, across the street from Kith, there was an original Dondi tag that was uncovered when there was construction work being done on the building. The news of it went viral. I passed by and took a flick just out of respect.
Took a flick? What's that? Pardon the ignorance or misreading. Just genuinely curious. Had tagger friends and their lives always seemed like a fantasy so it's rad to hear about
@@noctumnocturnaljust means took a picture

@@pseudoplotinus O rly?
Also blown away - I was thinking "damn how did they get all this Intel?" But back then was kind of it's own 2nd Golden era of graffiti. Blessed we got to live through that, its like a magical fairyland pasttime now. Also to see a Dondi tag irl would make me feel like I saw Jesus 😂 I'd never wash my eyes again
Fruity was a real hater this episode

SHUT UP
The first time I heard it when this show aired, I wanted to leave that as my answering machine message, lol
As a nyc graffiti writer this ep is so dope to see. The animation is well done and the voice acting is top notch
It really shows that Fruity really is a major fuck up when it comes to graffiti. Think: Matt trusted *Alex* the most strait-laced character in the whole show; to be a lookout over Fruity.
Fruity still saved them from the guards though when they almost got caught!
@@mauhuff yeah but he's still a fuck up. never liked fruity he was always a douche.

I use to watch this show every night during the summer when I was 13. It was the fucking best
same thing for me except I was eleven. Hands down My all time favorite tv show ever. I was growing up in the city with out older siblings, but had crazy older cats around me, & this show helped mold me even more. I'd watch this & then Howard stern on e!, & then later at night fuzzy softcore porn or fucked up taxiCab confession stories, leaking in through the static on HBO & STARS. All my dudes did the same routine too. Shit was ca$h
I loved this show 2004 in the uk but this episode was never showed like keenan and Kel the first episode was. Ever showed

I wasn't even born in the 90s but i really like gems like these.
Okay but actually adding echos for when they’re in the tunnels. Makes it so much more real. 💯
sickest episode
I used to be you could contact the creator and for $20 or so get a non-commercial DVD of the series with commentary and hidden features. Boy, did they tear MTV a new one over their handling of this series. All of the stories are based on real interviews, and some of the interviewees were voice actors. This was definitely a passion project, done in the days of hand drawn cell animation, but nothing before or since looked this cool. And all of the background art got destroyed because MTV wouldn't pay the import duty (all the animation was done overseas) and the creator was still too broke at the time to afford it. The soundtrack did get released as .mp3 files by the artist, they should still be available somewhere on the web.
Taking your shoes and pants off to cross through subway sludge is so utterly insane.
matt is so relatable, everytime he talks it’s like same man
They really don’t make shows like this anymore

Leah isn’t a good representation of the average woman. You’re not ever gonna find one of your female friends getting dressed infront of you! You’ll probably find more girls like Chakra and she’s probably a better way to build confidence talking to women

I once heard a saying that if you were a skater in California your were most likely gonna be a Tagger. I first saw graff when I was in elementary eating out with my family and seeing some kid catch a box truck and my dad talking so much shit about it. Fast forward a couple years later my bigger sister catches my name on my old ps3 tony hawk proving ground game. After that I started to notice it a lot more and eventually just like every teen growing up in the streets I grew hungry to learn that bitch. I never stop to realize how big apart of my life it turned out to be. You meet some cool cats through out the journey, some crazy stories some people just won’t believe, and over all you slowly start learning more about yourself…
yea I'm from Virginia but moved to Oakland on a whim a few years ago and stayed out there for a couple of years just to feel it out. I'm 27 and I really enjoyed the vibe out there. I lived Downtown ironically and got into skateboarding after having a love of pennyboarding in high school. My time in Oakland was also when I discovered the show Downtown. It just perfectly encapsulated that nostalgic, grungy, angsty night time vibe that I experienced while out there perfectly. Met some cool taggers and one specifically who is a dnb producer and skater (just all around dope guy)! I will always love Oakland and I will always love this show. It's just so chill and trippy. It's seriously making me consider a move to New York. This and Broad City lol
