That's a good theory. Norse mythology is written as poems, and I believe are thought to have been sung, so it would be more poetic the way it's written rather then "seer of the 9 realms" or something like that. It isn't that uncommon even today to believe there's a connection between mother and child so that connection could be refering to his ability to see into all 9 realms.
I remember reading one translation saying that his mother's were the nine waves. Might mean he has a connection to Rán and Ægir, the Jotun of the sea, but then again who the Hel knows?
That is exactly what I thought and maybe he was actually born from the night realms that figuratively but literally so maybe maybe not it is just myth so they say
Yes that makes sense, there is a fairy tail of a boy raised by nine women. He is born to the youngest of the nine but he is raised by all nine. So that might be the same with Heimdall
“ The son of 9 mothers, to whom their all sisters.” Maybe it’s saying Heimdall is the son of the 9 realms that he watches which is all connected like family
Since God of War Ragnarok was already released, and Heimdall made his appearance on the video game, can you do an update on this vid and give us an impression of what you think on how he was portrayed in the game?
Can you imagine that when Heimdall gets introduced whenever he enters the Valhalla court and the dude who has to introduce him ends with "And Enemy of Loki!" And everyone just claps, b/c everyone hates Loki.
No one in myth "Hated" Loki just tolerated him or were somewhat close to him if you notice Thor in particular does go to Loki if he couldn't solve a problem by beating it with Mjölnir lol Heimdall maybe the only one that did not like Loki because of their feud however that came about but he too tolerated him for the most part due to Odin. But after Ragnarök is started sure they hated him then for obvious reasons of pointing out their flaws and well starting the literal end of all things is understandable. But of course I'm one for Loki he was necessary to push them or save the day then ultimately be their undoing.
I just love how ironic it is that Heimdallr is played by Elba while the Norse myth version of the character is literally described as "the whitest of all the Aesir" lol. I know he's based on the comics character not the mythological one but it's still hilarious.
White didn’t mean white skin color. It could mean a bunch of things, but in this thing it probably means smart or wise, since the word “white”was used to say that someone is wise or experienced. This is done till this day actually in northern countries, which is where I’m from.

I am just now seeing this video and I'm on the floor with "These names are killing me!" Norse mythology has always been an interest of mine, (Yeah, I know I'm black, lol) so this was a good view, thanks.
I remember a Grims tale about the son of 9 mother's. 1 was his mom, the rest were her sisters. They were imprisoned by the king I don't remember for what and he would bring them food. Keeping them alive. He tricked some evil lady and ended up freeing them. Think his mom lost an eye. They all swore to raise and love him.
I'm no expert, but I think the myth about Heimdall having made the social classes adds some context to his rivalry with Loki. Like the person responsible for the status quo probably would despise someone who constantly breaks it.

Something occurs to me: Could you go over the origins of "That's a 4-letter word"? Obviously, that's meant to signify a bad word like "f*ck", "sh*t", or even "damn", but it can also extend to certain economic terms, certain car brands, and other things depending on who you talk to. And there are so many other 4-letter words that aren't bad: like "like", "hike", "thin", "that", etc. Heck, "four", is a 4-letter word, and the only number the same amount of letters as its number. So, where did the expression come from?
Maybe it just means all nine sisters had a hand in raising him? Or since it’s mythology, they all hand in creating him/willing/welding him into existence? Like they all contributed to his abilities and characteristics.
Hey Jon, being that Christians very often incorporated or adopted/reimagined many myths/legends of other cultures/religions into the Christian mythos, perhaps more of Heimdall's story can be found or, at least, speculated upon if researching through Christian mythos that is either known to have evolved from Norse mythology or has very similar/coincidental aspects. The Russ were mostly from Sweden, and were either traders or Vikings. I'm guessing they looked "red", due to them being out on the water so much. Brunettes would have a reddish hue not only to their skin, but their hair would be sun bleached, also lending a reddish hue. It's amazing. We used to be called "Red". Now we are "white". However, I'm sure that the ancient Norse knew which among them had skin color closer to the tone of snow, and would use a terminology for it. "You are more Fair", "You are lighter", "You are the palest among us". Yea. I'm sure of that. I hate to be a party pooper, but the double "L" in norse is pronounced as a short hard "KL" sound so his name phonetically is Haymdokler. Kind of like the double "L" in Latin languages is a "Y" or "I" sound. So you say Pancho Via when you read the name Pancho Villa. Please contact Hrafna she will certainly make your love of Norse mythology grow. The proper pronunciations sound absolutely beautiful.
I’m from Iceland, we have to learn this stuff in school. I am also half black (father American), Heimdallur being black is weird, and insulting to the mythology.
The Rigsthula myth reminds me of the Grimms Fairytale called Eve’s Various Children. The story is more of an explanation on why rich people are pretty and poor people are ugly, and it replaces the random couples with Adam and Eve, but I bet it’s a variant of the same myth.
This was excellent - one of your best. One thing that you might be interested in is the etymological origins of black and white in Nordic languages. You need a conceptual shift in the idea of colour, first, though. Black and white were perceived as the same philosophical concept - an absence of colour (the idea of black and bleach - the withdrawal of colour - are the exact same). What we regard as 'colours' were regarded as shades of 'grey' between an absence of colour. So the cinematic portrayal of Heimdall as a brown-eyed, brown-skinned man is exactly as accurate as a portrayal of him as a blue-eyed, pink-skinned man. Once you work from the basis that there was day and night and everything between was variations between absences in being able to see things with your eyes, that human evolutionary leap between experiencing things in nature that we call colour and being able to control the colour (through dying and painting and staining) of things we see becomes enormous. Oh well, just an idea.
From a philosophical standpoint then, or at least with what you said, maybe it means like "the most pure" so as the gateway guardian he's like Someone who can't be tainted?
My take on Heimdall being "white" ... it makes the most sense if he's something like a warrior who's survived to middle age, not quite as strong as in his youth, but more experienced and seasoned. So while Thor is well-suited to roaming around and getting peed on by giants, Heimdall's talents dispose him towards a role that's a little less active but also beyond the capabilities of a young warrior. His cunning - such as recommending that Thor disguise himself - would also be appropriate to an older warrior. His age would also make sense if he was around at the beginning of human society, cultivating the classes of mankind as well as the sickest burns.
i have no idea what point you were trying to make but heimdall has always been depicted as pale and blonde, the reason he was black in marvel was because of a new phenomenon known as ''blackwashing'' which has grown to be quite common in hollywood these past years
If you were disappointed with the lack of representation Heimdall gets in video games, I should let you know he's a playable character in the mythology themed MOBA Smite! He's a hunter (ranged physical attacker) and some of his abilities include teleportation using fragments of the Bifrost, blowing the Gjallarhorn and yeeting enemies through Muspelheim and Niflheim!

You are thinking way too literally. Offspring of 9 mothers all of who were sisters. Long story short, Nine daughters all of who had a only girls except for him. Even Shorter, the only male heir. Please contact Hrafna she will certainly make your love of Norse mythology grow. The proper pronunciations sound absolutely beautiful.

I’m from Iceland, we have to learn this stuff in school. I am also half black (father American), Heimdallur being black is weird, and insulting to the mythology.
This ought to be interesting.
Then again less than 2 minutes in and maybe not...?
Odin had 2 ravens {Huginn (Old Norse: "thought") and Muninn (Old Norse "memory" or "mind")
The Rigsthula myth reminds me of the Grimms Fairytale called Eve’s Various Children. The story is more of an explanation on why rich people are pretty and poor people are ugly, and it replaces the random couples with Adam and Eve, but I bet it’s a variant of the same myth.
What if the 9 mothers who are sisters refers to the planets. Before they said Pluto wasn’t a planet

Just one question, what does a black person do in Norse mythology? Why is Heimdall a black giant?
"Ya boy has a grill" love it, love your vids.🥰
Are you a doll
@@johnlawful2272 no, hella makeup and photoshop 🙂
Boy I remember the racist incel fanboys had a fit when when they thought Idris Alba was going to be Thor.
From a philosophical standpoint then, or at least with what you said, maybe it means like "the most pure" so as the gateway guardian he's like Someone who can't be tainted?
i'll never forgive idris elba for thinking he could play roland deschain. heimdall's cool with me, though.

So, according to the comments no one if slightly offended by how he portraits Christians. Well I feel bad for my faith 😕

You know. you have inspired me. I'll swing by the store and get some while I'm out shopping.
@@MissCaraMint Awesome! You don’t need much at once but it’s really good. Not all stores carry a big variety of it. Most have Chaucer’s, which is like the commoner’s mead, which is usually fine for me, I’m not that picky. But it’s not really expensive. Even the fancier kinds are really affordable.
Well, the Nigerian descended actor was never supposed to play Heimdall. Go figure.

YES, CO-SIGNED!
You’ll have to update this since he was in the new GoW.
Nobody ever bothers to ask Heimdall about his parentage, because it probably takes hours to explain. :D I like to think that the ones who tried fell asleep before Heimdall could finish his explanation.
Heimdall would look like that one meme whenever he has to explain his family tree, especially the maternal side. (That meme where that dude has the conspiracy boards behind him)

there is no such thing as ''african mythology'' nor ''Native american mythology'' same as there is no ''european mythology''. Putting all those continents mythologies into one category would be as if you put the greek gods and the norse gods into the same mythology just because they both stem from europe
Not to sound like a hater but if there no crusades we'd have a lot more content on ancient religions...
Jon, I love you and the videos you make because they're amazing and not only does it sorta kinda ruin my childhood, but it opens my eyes and makes me think twice if what I hear was real or not. Kinda sounds like he's the "sun" of nine mothers "planets?" 🥴🤷🏾♀️
Now Pluto is mad at you!!!!!
If I was you I will not mess up with god of the underworld...
What they're trying to say, when they say Heimdall is the whitest of the Aesir is that he was the Wisest, i think.
Why’s a Norse myth character being played by a black guy
The son of nine mothers explanation is simple. He was *raised* by nine sisters which would explain why he's tremendously perceptive.
"Relax Karen I was only joking." Honestly, I, a Christian, had literally no problem with you referring to (militarized) Christians derogatorily, but calling us Karen's? Come on man you're better than that.
Dam can brother get any love anything he do some body have to throw some shade
Yea they did get it wrong, all the Gods and Asgardians were white.
Hyndall's head sword is obviously his man package (and maybe he even used ManScape back then, no just kidding). White back then meant bright or brilliant, not his skin color. Makes sens Alba played him also.
He should make another video on God of war Ragnarok
Me watching this while playing Ragnorok
My guess is they're playing us with the poem. They made it vague on purpose so we don't forget them. Thats how you keep your memory going forever, confuse the masses
nine mothers who were also sisters might also mean his mother was a sister wife
A character that got "blackwashed" but somehow worked because of the current generation
what do you mean?
You are thinking way too literally. Offspring of 9 mothers all of who were sisters. Long story short, Nine daughters all of who had a only girls except for him. Even Shorter, the only male heir. He had a bunch of female first cousins. The other way you can interpret it is, the only direct male in 9 generations. Think The Seventh Son.
That makes sense
@@chadfalardeau5396 The other way, which is kind of weird is, nine women all sharing a single set of reproductive organs. Kind of like a Hydra.
