AHHH thanks for tuning in, my fellow mythology nerds! I'm curious: would YOU be willing to take on Baldur's curse of not being able to feel anything in exchange for an immortal life that's free of physical pain? (Personally, I'd have to pass but I’d love to give it a shot for like a week.) Comment you answer below!
I think I’d have to pass. But on the other hand… 🤔 🤣
Pass
I think perhaps a more in depth question would be given the gift/curse, how long would it take for someone to lose their humanity?
Messed up origins of:
Fenrir
Loki
Jormungandr
The Odyssey
Jason and the Argonauts
This video was some BS, bro. 😜
Loki is like that one kid in class who keeps everyone inside for recess despite him being the only one who was misbehaving.
He's the kid who fully intended to keep everybody inside for recess because apparently group punishment is funny
I feel like I'm Loki I was this kid
Oh, you are in for a treat if he covers the story Loketretta (sorry don't know the english/Icelandic name for that story)
@@Ulvejenta what is that?
@@studentdrake He actually did cover some of the story but not to the full extent, Lokesenna, the story is basicly about how Loki talks trash about each and every god but Thor, because news flash, Loki knows Thor hits and oh damn, those threats that comes from Thor, those aint pretty
No one: ......
Loki: and I took that personally
Freya asked all things for permission to protect Baldur except for one.
Mistletoe: "And I took that personally."
I wanna like this comment but I can’t because it’s at 666 and I wanna leave it lol
I like to think Baldur in the game was once a benevolent man but was driven violent and insane the longer he lived without feeling anything
He was loved in Asgard
Kind of the opposite of the actual Baldr.
"LoKi iS nOt eViL, hE Is jUsT mIsUndErStoOd aNd a PrAnkStEr" well letting someone get killed bc you think it’s funny is actually pretty evil
Ppl are normally referring to marvel Loki. Not Norse mythology loki.
And letting your blood brother who took care of you when your family didn't ruin your life is okey, letting the gods threaten his life over a prank that may have gone to far and never take revenge until in Ragnarok, and letting them take your kids killing angerboda (in some versions) because she tried protecting her kids, ect so its okey of Odin and the other gods? Everybody is the victim of each other-
Isn't a good enough reason to then start Ragnarok and stuff. These guys have drama trust me- im a hardcore fan of norse mythology and know to much i could stay here all day telling everything ik but that would take months to finish-
@@sigynfoxy69 theirs no side that was completely right
I mean Thor and Odin are pretty much just as bad as Loki...
But like Odin literally made him come up with a way to trick the builder into doing his biding and with that he was raped by svadilfari in his horse form which was a mare and with that came sleipneir Odins steed so yeah I'd say fuck baulder to if he was anything like thor or odin, yes loki wasn't perfect but neither we're any of the Gods themselves they all had wrong doings but lokis took the cake with alot of his stories.
The beard is back. Fun fact it only grows when it is a Greek or Norse mythology.
Ahh i see that makes sense
Lol 🤣 true 😁

They shoulda made God of War rated E cuz he catchin fades with everyone.
This story is actually very sweet for Norse mythology.
All these Aesir being absolutely heartbroken that their sweetest big bro died and even that Crab-apple Hel was willing to bring him back.
And Thor punted a dwarf.
That's Thor, alright, if all else fails punt a dwarf
Couldn't stop laughing at the image of Thor punting a dwarf. Thanks for that. 😂
The mistletoe wasn't asked because it was so small that it was overlooked. That's why we hang it. So that mistletoe wouldn't be overlooked again.
From an object to be revered to an object people make out under it
I’ve lived in Sweden all my life and though I don’t have a source I’ve heard an alternative version of the mistletoe, where it is an inherently bad plant because it is a parasite. So it was overlooked because it was growing on the tree that promised Frigga not to hurt Balder, but it is a separate organism that was never asked and therefore couldn’t promise anything. And I sort of got the impression it was offended it wasn’t asked😂
Or! If your like me you avoid it at all cost o.o
@@Saltwaterhair heard both that version, and the one where it was too young to make such promises or something 😅
@@Saltwaterhair I won't lie, I heard the reason was because mistletoe was too young, so Freya didn't ask it to promise.

@@Karen-pk3uv Totally agree! His reasoning is spot-on, too. Wanting to educate the masses on a little-known subject. I can name at least a dozen teachers of mine that would do the same thing. 😊
I think it's quite interesting how different cultures can have similar stories. I have always thought both Baldr and Achilles from Greek mythology were quite similar - both were essentially invincible aside from one major weakness and their invincibility and weaknesses were both given to them by their mothers.
That’s probably because Norse mythology was born shortly after the Danes started trading with the Greek. We had a different religion before that, which got merged with Greek mythology.
@@radioinactivescarlet_3348what?
I actually named my dog after Baldur after I read a book about him as a kid :)
Sadly forgot the title of it, but from what I remember the story was really close to what you described in this video. Thank you for bringing attention to such an interesting mythological character! It has always baffled me how little people know about him
I had a baldur too. My sissy had three dogs iggy, loki and Thor. I then got a black cat and his name is Oden( our joke is to the dogs who's your daddy ha a cat) and then I had a pitty named Thor. Baldur passed away and I had him cremated, he went through his process on halloween and the next day which if I'm right are important days made for spirits in norse mythology it helped make his passing easier knowing that he began his next journey during that special time
Next you should cover the origins of Wendingo: Native American Mythology well of course after all the Norse Mythology

Jon: eh he’ll be back
I was disappointed that Baldur didn’t have more votes, that was the one I was hoping to see though so I’m glad you decided to make one on him.
I'm so glad to see the Baldur story. It's one of the ones I really wanted to see.
I know I’m late to the messages. But I’ve been studying mythology often in my spare time and he’s one of the ones I hear the least about. Didn’t even know who he was when I saw his name. You always hear about Freya, Zeus, Egyptian mythology, etc, so it’s crazy that he’s Norse and you don’t hardly hear about him
@@ardenalexa94 yeah, I guess it just depends on who you’re getting the stories and information from. Because in all mythological beliefs you got your OG gods and goddesses that start it all out, but overtime you have some added or taken away from the stories for some odd reason whether it be a “new age” movement of the belief or whatever the case may be. In the end though it’s always fun to look into all the gods and goddesses that are said to be out there, and finding more out there just adds on to the excitement of learning the way these people saw the world around us back then!
After nearly 2 years of following you, my husband finally decided to watch the video with me. You actually made this very serious man laugh a few times. My witty fellow... You are awesome. 😂😊

Jon Solo: Baldur
My brain thinking about overly sarcastic productions: "Loki! You piece of s**t! This is not what a joke is!"
I am always saddened by the fate of Loki's boys. They didn't deserve to suffer for their dad's crimes.
true but its poetic loki killed odins son so he'll kill loki's sons
@@eliasmagus5086 but Loki's sons Jormangandr and Fenrir are destined to be destroyed by Odin's sons Thor and Vidarr and to destroy Thor and Odin as well.
That's surely enough Death. But sure, the death god must get his unnecessary vengeance.
But then again if her sons were not punished for their father's crime, Sigyn might have sided with the Aesir and Ragnarok been truly won. As the gods tortured her family, how can this goddess of Victory stand with her own people and not against them?
It's all a vicious cycle, but apparently that's Norse poetry.
Man they were a fucking giant wolf, a giant snake, and their sister a bloody half corpse whore hel.. what a great family tree. Lol
Although.. were it never for loki, ragnarok would never of happened. His role in it was probably more than just about any characters in the noise mythos, odin included. Maybe that's why he's so loved, even to this day. Takes on loki or his mask or his powers have been told for time and memorium. And will for a long time to come. I was so sceptical about autreus being loki in gow.. but they wrote it in so well and the story told so well and decently I think it works out just fine.
@@Tribrid-zv3nq Sigyn sat with Loki everyday between watching one of her sons disembowel the other so that his guts could be used to bind her husband. She doesn't have to fight in Ragnarok to play her part in it. She waited by his side mourning their children while keeping the poisonous venom of the first son, who had been transformed again into a snake, from dripping onto Loki's head. And is he appreciative? No. Because she has to dump the bowl out occasionally and he still gets the occasional drop of highly corrosive venom on his face.
So, yeah, I feel sorry for her. So much pain and sorrow heaped on her. All she did was marry Loki. And how could I not feel sorry for her boys? Perfectly normal Aesir boys...tortured because of who their father is.
Man, Loki's gonna be pissed about this. He may invade earth again 😂
maybe lol
Let him come
@@kentuckywildcatgobigblue7190 I'll be so happy
Well He did kill Baldur so I guess invading earth won't be necessary
If he comes in the former of Tom hiddleston then I'm cool with it
In one version I read, while Frigg was extracting promises from 'every plant that grows from the earth' she accidentally missed the parasitic vine since it grows from other plants...
Jon: do you want Thor, Loki, buldar or Heimdall
Community: Loki
Jon: did I hear buldar
So basically Odin seals Loki's evil kids, Loki kills Odin's kid for lolz/retaliation, Odin then kills Loki's kids in retaliation for that, so with nothing else to live for when the world ends Loki goes on a suicidal rampage with his sealed children just to watch the Aesir burn.
Dark.
It can get darker my friend :')
I've read many dark versions of these stories
So have I but not many seem to realize that fact.
You seem to have a major misunderstanding of what is good and evil - his children were just his children, and not specifically “evil”. Same with Loke - he isn´t “evil” he just does what he does for the fun of it, since the other gods refer to him plenty of times for help.

This episode made me realise that in the show vikings they used a few refrences to Baldur. In the show the character Floki is punished by being tied up on a cross and there is water dripping on his face. His wife collects the drops to relieve his pain. But sometimes she gets tired of standing up all day.Another character thinks his son is Baldur's reincarnation.
This channel deserves so many more views. Not only is this type of content fascinating, but Jon puts so much effort, and research into each vid. He's very thorough, and u can trust that what he tells u. He tells the stories and info of each person, God etc. in such an entertaining way. This is great. I took multiple college level courses in mythology and hardly anything was mentioned of Baldur beyond “Ppl loved him and Loki got him killed.”

Did he resurrect like in the myths or stay in the world of the dead?

A little bit of comparative mythology here:
The story of Baldur's death by Loki is similar to the deaths of the Greek Achilles, the Welsh sun god Lleu Llaw Gyffes, Bran the Blessed from Welsh mythology, the Norse hero Sigurd, and Samson from Jewish mythology. Just as Baldur was almost invincible apart from a mistletoe dart or spear, Achilles was invincible apart from his right heel which was hit by an arrow, Lleu Llaw Gyffes could only be killed by a spear, Bran the Blessed was invincible apart from a poison-tipped spear, and Sigurd's German mythology equivalent Siegfried was invincible apart from a spear. Sigurd became invincible in the first place by bathing in dragon's blood (blood is liquid), Lleu is killed when taking a bath (water is liquid), and Achilles became invincible because his mother dipped him into the river styx, which is connected to the underworld (rivers are water which is liquid, and the underworld here can be compared to Sigurd's dragon blood because dragons are similar to serpents which are creatures of the underworld). Also, just as Baldur is said to return after his death, Lleu Llaw Gyffes was resurrected after he was killed. Samson was invincible apart from his lover Delilah getting him to reveal the secret of his strength, which was his long hair. So Delilah plotted with the Philistines who cut off Samson's hair while he was sleeping. This is similar to the story of Lleu Llaw Gyffes whose unfaithful cheating wife Blodeuedd plotted with her new lover Gronw Pebyr to kill Lleu. It is also similar to how Loki had to attain the secret of Baldur's weakness from Frigg.
Loki's punishment is also similar to that of Prometheus.
So...the message here is that if a man can avoid bathing, grooming and women, he can stay strong and pure?
@@marybaldwin5944 Some of these stories, such as Samson and Llew Llaw Gyffes, deal with femme fatales, so your point about women in these stories is probably true.
Lots of mythologies are similar in a lot of cases. Especially when you compare greek/roman to the norse. Even when looking further away you will see creation myths sounding awfully similar, or what the world revolves around. But wether that it due to word of mouth from people travelling, or different cultures just ending up with the same conclusion (or something third) is hard to tell.

I think you have a point not enough people know about Baldur. But I think Heimdall is more interesting, though just as much underrepresented. Tyr is another who can join this crowd.
I’m very interested in going down the rabbit-hole that is the disparate origins of the Aesir and Vanir, respectively. That is to say, their origins on earth more than their origins in the mythology. I have heard it hypothesized that they were possibly originally different pantheons belonging to different tribes or even cultural groups and were joined at some distant point as Germanic tribes began to form and spread. Very interesting stuff, the origins of such ancient religions.
