@@kristopherhayes1957 well many eastern martial arts use much more flexibility and big leg movements like roundhouse kicks and axe kicks because many are from south east Asia. In Europe armor was easier to make and winters were more harsh so leg mobility was harder with the weight. Boxing and wrestling (pankration is what kratos learns) use wrestling and upper body striking which is easier in rough terrain and with armor
I would have loved to have seen Heimdall and Baldur interact. I imagine they LOATHED each other. Baldur because Heimdall can read his thoughts and emotions (and most certainly mocked him for it) and Heimdall because Baldur was invulnerable, rendering his ability of foresight moot in a fight.
@@charanarandeni6016 I’d imagine heimdall being able to read all of baldurs mother issues and insecurities would also be extremely infuriating for baldur
The heimdall fight is actually a great representation of krato's training. He didn't hit him until he went fist of fury mode, and like brok said, it overwhelmed his senses because up to this point no one had ever hit him. And lets be honest its not the old GOW games but he has to kill at least one god for the title to live up to its name and Heimdall just won the "god who dies" lottery. When Thor stares him down he doesn't engage because Thor is most likely someone who could land a hit on him/kill him too, meaning he is egotistical and a coward because he wont fight anyone who would actually give him a fight. Being able to read intent and predict means he also knows who has the capacity to kill him so he bully's the weak and doesn't provoke the strong. Kratos was an unknown factor, merely looking into his eyes he knew about the spear but was so egotistical that he considered it not a threat. Having no Intel on kratos other then the spear really did literally kill him. Conclusion: Don't fuck around and find out with a god who began as a simple spartan but then grew to the rank of god and slew an entire pantheon and as consequence destroyed his homeland/Realm.
Thing is, Kratos is not Thor, THOR is someone who can go nuclear, fly, way more versatile powerset than Kratos. Area of effect attacks Heimdall can't defend or run away from Heimdall losing to a goddamn spear is so lame. Cause if you get hurt once by the same fucking attack over and over and you dont evolve- really contradicts everything that built him up as a threat. All it took was a hax spear. Woulda been better if he lived to be humbled for the rest of his life. Cause the reading intent loophole makes no sense. Fact is, the guy was broken, and the ONLY reason he lost was because the script said so, Plotarmor.
@@lessermook7608Thor only has some more versatility because kratos greek magic and gear is dead after GOW3. OG kratos is easily more versatile than anyone in the norse saga (odin and freya come almost close). However, older kratos is stronger than before, but he has to restrict his rage every minute or he may become uncontrollable to himself and atreus. If older kratos continued with the same mindset as Himself in GOW3, anyone that was aligned with odin would have died brutal deaths. Kratos is cannonly faster than heimdall (yet his is restricting his full power). Thats how he was able to still land after the spear worked heimdall’s mind.
Heimdall is obviously lazy as hell. A god with such foresight should definitelt be able to go toe to toe with Thor and Kratos, but he is so arrogant he never takes the time to hone his skills to complement his abilities. He thinks all fights will just fall into his favor. He lives in self-delusion, something he must've picked up from Odin
@@scar2377he died as someone who never once pushed himself past his limits, who took his gift for granted until the very breath, blinded by his ego and pride, someone who would only ever win to those where victory was assured. @@Kentashu Kratos definitely didn't low diff everybody. He said in his journal that Thor's punches were like no other, he 3v1'd Odin, and he would have lost to Heimdall without the spear.
@@lekacious3529 You gotta remember the more Kratos WANTS to fight is the stronger he is. He tried to get out of damn near ever fight in this game. Officially stated he’s significantly weaker than he was in Greece.
@@lekacious3529 The only reason he got the spear was because everyone was pushing for it. Even without it, he would've won. This is the same guy who's fought beings like Pollux and Castor (who can manipulate time), the Sisters of Fate (another time manipulators), Hermes, and Zeus (who can move at literal lightning speeds). In the fight, he attempts to strike him three times, first time it was slow and wild, second time, he upped the pace, the third time, he easily lands a hit. He was reading his moves and learning from it. By the time he was sufficiently pissed off, he beat the ever loving shit out of Heimdall without the spear.
In the retrospect; being choked to death and getting his arm blown off was quite easy way out for Heimdall, not like the other Gods that wronged Kratos in the past.
Yeah, but getting his head bashed against the Rocky ground 3 times was very brutal and disturbing way to go. (in reality his head would have been split open)
Heimdall's death was legitimately disturbing to me because: A) It partially undoes the hard work Kratos did to bury that part of himself. As he had him dead to rights by the time he started slamming his head into the ground. There was no need to kill him. But he did it anyway. B) Because Mimir was there to see not only the kill, but the *real* Ghost of Sparta. In that moment, Kratos's closest friend that he had made in his new life saw that , if anything, the stories about him were greatly *watered down* The Ghost of Sparta isn't a legend to be revered and respected, but a monster, a boogeyman to be feared. And should you get in his way or , God forbid, piss him off you are categorically *f@cked* !
Mimir needed to see that side of his brother, to FULLY!!! understand the Ghost, the eyes of Mimir tell da whole story of his curiosity...it always sat in da middle of his mind since he said "ahhh great bloody hell!! I'm dangling from the hip of the Ghost of Sparta himself" or something like that. but honestly I'm quite glad he got da chance to see his full rage...at least now his curiosity was found....I agree witchu but DAMIT!!!!!! I disagree witchu at the same time Kratos: Do Not Call Me That!....
Ok in his defense, Kratos tried to persuade Heimdall to just take the L and move on but no he was too hard-headed and egotistic to stand down, so he pretty much brought his dreadful demise upon himself
10:02 i love what a petty person Heimdall is, he moved around Odin behind his back specifically because he could read that he would turn around, and also knows Odin wouldn’t notice Heimdall moving because of the blind spot on his right side. Heimdall basically forces him to move all the way, just to spite him a tiny bit. Not because it matters, just as a little power play because he can. And Odin on the other hand is smart enough to know what Heimdall did the second he sees that he’s not there, and it doesn’t seem like the first time Heimdall did that with him… but he’s so preoccupied with manipulating Atreus that he just files that away for later and goes on talking.
I disagree. He smiles bc when Odin turns back, he thinks for a moment he convinced Odin and is about to enjoy Odin's interrogating of Loki, and adopts the position of doubling up on Atreus.
Nah, he's actually super confused and disappointed when Odin makes the "mistake". Odin was intentionally making himself look more vulnerable and unthreatening.
I love how they adapted the relationship b/w Loki & Heimdall from the mythology for the game.. They both despise each other a lot so much so that they're supposed to die killing each other at Ragnarok.
It also makes sense that the God of Foresight would constantly be swanning around like a smug dickhead. IIRC there wasn't much about his personality in the mythology, but I can't imagine someone could have his powers and NOT come off as an insufferable know-it-all at least part of the time.
@@kaiyamya9882 Heimdall/r had a decent bit about his personality tbh, he was said to be loyal to Odin and Asgard, as well as a lot more benevolent and just than what he was portrayed as in GoW, also in mythology his main trait isn't his possession of forsight/knowledge and nstead his perception and vision which is able to see across the 9 realms and precise enough to see grass grow. However Heimdall was said to detest Loki (who saw him as arrogant and too self rightious) as they were prophesied to kill each other at Ragnarock
@@blip4106there’s a bit more as to why Loki and Heimdall hated each other. Loki constantly found ways to leave Asgard without Heimdall’s knowledge or consent, and everyone left Asgard with Heimdall knowing about it(except Odin I believe). Plus they just don’t work well. Heimdall is more benevolent and Loki blesses people by causing messes that nobody wanted in the first place. One guy is serious at his job and the other thinks life is a big charade of games. They’re just two different rivers.
What I like about him is that even though he's a cocky asshole, he knows his responsibilities and delivers on them. He is also like that older cousin who speaks harsh but true and thinks hurting is fine till it's not harmful. You can see him hurting both Thrud and Atreus plenty of time but it's always a light smack or punch, never a gut breaking blow or something they can't take. He also speaks true on what's going on in their head and around them, no matter how harsh. It's a well written charater tbh, well performed!
Yeah I understand he's a villain but he was just protecting his people and having his abilities I can see why he's iffy about people. People kinda suck.
@@empath9814 Bro, even his own people hated him. Did you hear the conversations in the food hall when you return as Atreus after Heimdall's dead? Everybody hated his guts and were glad that he died.
@@hunterg.1300 They hate him and yet he's proud of Asgard and takes his duty very serious. The problem with him is that he can see what you think so I assume that's why he's not sociable since people are very hypocrite but they hide it all the time they just can't hide it around Heimdall.
Imagine an argument between Heimdall and the Norns. Norns: You are so predictable, We already knew what you want to say. Heimdall: Do you take me for a fool? I already knew that you knew what I want to say. Norns: Well we knew that you knew that we knew what you want to say. Heimdall: And I already knew that you knew that I knew that you knew what I want to say.
2:05 Atreus response is sincere. At that point he doesn't know much of how twisted Odin is and carry his own judgemental thoughts/feelings which Heimdall can see. Heimdall saw nothing malice in Loki at the time, but since he's been doing this for awhile, he knows people grow/change and may carry these thoughts later down the road.
He even does that head tilt thing, like he's thinking "we'll see about that then" since he can notice that, although Atreus is confused and came from the enemy's side, he truly does mean no harm to anyone there.
Then he said at 19:18 : “well, they are merely, children” about mask failure, l guess he someway tried to protect thrúd. He is not that mean and heartless, I see, Caring and protective sometimes
@@RedfishCarolinaOh, I forgot to mention that in original line from 19:06 Atreus and thrúd should leave study room and shouldn’t listen to odin and heimdall’s conversation. This is a secret line so in fact they couldn’t hear what he said. according to his tone of speaking, it was some sort of protection btw, he mentioned it because doesn’t wanted odin to spill his rage on thrúd for failure (they know odin’s real face and that’s why thrúd was so nervously sad about failed mission) but yeah, maybe he insulted Atreus again as he always does. It was about both purpose
i remember at the very start when he and thor came into the house and he simply referred to freya as his "ex" not ex wife just "ex" felt... very hip with the kids vibe lol
16:08 I love the music in this scene, it is the same of the last game when Baldur started to punch Kratos. It really evokes this sense of sheer rage and dread
He really isnt an ahole though he knew what was gonna happen... they kinda all did and imagine someone who was gonna end up destroying your home, family and everything you ever cared about shows up and while you know this everyones telling you to chill youd be a dick too
On Kratos's side you look at him like Odin's lab dog. But if you in Odin's side you can see all he does is for Odin 1 loyal person. Imagine Heimdall on Kratos side I think he will get a lot of fans
“I am haunted by your incompetence, it keeps me up at night.” “If we can somehow harness your uselessness, we can use is to fuel the whole city.” LMAO He is such an asshole, I love him.
I love how when Kratos goes for the finishing move on Heimdall, he wears the expression he always had on in the first few God of War games. That hateful, intense scowl that arches his eyebrows
Heimdall was indeed a very well made character. His loyalty to Odin and his people blinded him to his own faults. He couldn't imagine possibly being the villain and he couldnt imagine someone beating him in direct combat due to his ability of foresight and mind reading. His defeat was expected but that doesnt mean it wasnt rewarding due to his cocky arrogance.
I like how the final battle between thor and kratos thor said "ENOUGH" and Thrud shouted Enough with electric flowing around her as well just like thor
When heimdall implied he would drop atreus, did anyone else find themselves muttering "Bro, you _really_ don't wanna know what happens if you do that"?
@@AmberGemniaodin did it on purpose, he knew heimdall moved. At the same time, heimdall did the move on purpose as well. That was the moment odin knew he was gonna send heimdall to his death.
I feel that after Garm was freed, Odin knew. I also feel that Heimdall maybe got a "stern talking to" after Atreus left the room. I also feel that Heimdall's absence during the mission with Thrud was just Heimdall thinkning he knew better and just when and did some other shit. If he was there, the whole problem could have been avoided. Once again, very perceptive but sometimes forgets to think, ya know?
@@neo-warkid4edwards222 Ironic that his own arrogance indirectly lead to Kratos and boi getting a giant, immortal, _loyal_ hound that can tear holes through space and travel across realms in seconds.
3:15 many things that Heimdall said in this section is true about Atreus and don't forget when Atreus said he run better on chaos that completely disregarding everything Kratos taught him. I hate it when he keep saying he didn't want war whenever Kratos asked about it but deep down he truly want it and when that war happened he didn't like how many people died in it even though Kratos always warn Atreus about the price of war.
You actually missed a whole bunch of secret dialogue he has though...Like when as Atreus you pick up the hacksilver after meeting him, or if you try to shoot at Gulltoppr during your fight with him as Atreus, or if you summon Ratatoskr during the same fight. But my favourite is the line he has if you try to have Atreus use Eagle Eye against him. That shit's hilarious.
Gotta say tho, well done on behalf of the actor he did an amazing job. Heimdall really is the type to get you pissed off by his personality and it shows with just his voice alone
Something about Heimdall that I appreciate in “God of War” is the possible myth accuracy of his relationship with Atreus. Because in real life Ragnarök, while Thor wins the fight against Jormangandr yet dies to his wounds, Fenrir eats Odin, Hel is doing whatever the hell she wants on that fine judgement day, Loki is actually the one to face Heimdall in the end… on even footing to boot. Because at the end of Ragnarök Loki and Heimdall kill each other. Thus, I like to think this an accurate portrayal how they feel about each other: with animosity. That said, I have no proof because I it only knows of two of their fights: Ragnarök and *the these two Looney Tunes turned into seals and threw hands!*
Gotta say I hate how much I love him. He's a great character in this story. The voice is on point and he is effortlessly cool. I love his movement and how he fights. I particularly like when he climbs on Kratos near the wall and kick off him. Sick.
At 8:44 I noticed some interesting detail. Atreus fires an arrow and Heimdall catches it, but you can see him getting serious about that when he looks at his hand. I suspect he got cut by arrow while catching it, you can say that by a little splash of blood on his face after catching an arrow. Then he laughs but when he sees that arrow actually done a little damage you can see him gets real mad and start to going to Atreus to kill him
It had to have been something that would shock Heimdall so something more than the regular violence they're use to. I really think it was some sick fantasy Thor intentionally thought of to mess with Heimdall. Maybe it was Thor imagining himself torturing Heimdall in a sick way.
I’d often wondered how mimir always ended up on the floor in this particular fight, because it never really happened in previous fights, no matter how violent Kratos got. He musta been A HELL OF A LOT MORE VIOLENT to actually send mimir flying off him. Heimdal really got to him.
Well he's not as fast, he has same speed as baldur they have the same dash and flash movement, difference is he has foresight which is what makes him hard to hit.
Heimdall is too prideful to be spared out of pity, while Hermes cowers when he realises he overstepped some things. Overall they have similarities, but a lot of things make them different.
I wouldn't say upgraded, more like the Norse counterpart, he's definitely not faster since it was confirmed that Hermes moved so fast that Kratos couldn't even see him (until Kratos injured him)
4:12 The voice change when Heimdall says these things. As if for a moment he saw what Atreus is going to be, because after all he wasn't revealed as Loki for nothing.
20:23 “If it isn’t Queen Mistletoe herself… hilarious, by the way.” *What a nuanced insult.* Invoking her son’s death, to which she in part contributed, and/or her failure to protect him as a mother, from MISTLETOE of all things, then MOCKING her for her failings. That cuts so deep.

Area of effect attacks Heimdall can't defend or run away from
Heimdall losing to a goddamn spear is so lame.
Heimdall is obviously lazy as hell. A god with such foresight should definitelt be able to go toe to toe with Thor and Kratos, but he is so arrogant he never takes the time to hone his skills to complement his abilities. He thinks all fights will just fall into his favor.

A) It partially undoes the hard work Kratos did to bury that part of himself. As he had him dead to rights by the time he started slamming his head into the ground. There was no need to kill him. But he did it anyway.
B) Because Mimir was there to see not only the kill, but the *real* Ghost of Sparta. In that moment, Kratos's closest friend that he had made in his new life saw that , if anything, the stories about him were greatly *watered down*

Great analysis
That was the exact moment odin knew he was gonna send heimdall to his death. Funny enough, heimdall smugly smiles while he does it.
