I agree with you about blending with the brushes. I prefer brushes over sponges. I bought make-up brushes and they work perfectly for blending. They're a much cheaper option and they still blend wonderfully
My favorite is Peacock Feathers. I use inexpensive makeup brushes and they work great. Rather than washing them, I rub the brushes against a baby wipe, then a lint free paper towel. This removes the ink very effectively, and the brush dries very quickly. TFS.
I went out and bought 2 sets of the makeup brushes after hearing several people say they do the same and I haven't look back since....my favorite color is Victorian velvet
I was looking for cheap make up brushes to try them out as the others are ridiculously expensive if you don’t then get on with them but couldn’t find any! Maybe all the crafters had bought them 😂
tracey bartlam Hope you've been able to find some. Check eBay as well as Amazon. My set was $8 for ten of them. Love them!
Thanks Alex. I bought some of these from Amazon and they're still sitting on my shelf. You've inspired me to get them out and do some blending.
My daughter bought me these brushes for Christmas and I LOVE them!!! They really are so easy to use and achieve very seamless blends.
Alex I bought these brushes a while back and I will never go back to the others including the clarity brushes I have. I'm glad you did a video on them so that people can see how beautifully they blend. I can do things now I couldn't do before and if I did things just never looked quite right. Thanks Alex
It seems everyone comes to the same conclusion about how great these brushes are. Your video shows there is no doubt about how well they blend, I think its time to get a set for myself. Thank you for testing these out.
I love my picket fence brushes for blending. Had a hard time before as I am older and have bad hands, but these make it so easy!
I believe the makeup brushes came first, several years ago, and boy were they pricey! The same is true with the squishy sponges. Both were also of very high quality and would compare easily to PF brushes. Then the knockoffs came along, some horrible and some almost equal to the PF’s. That’s one reason I like Amazon, you can read the customer reviews and get a good idea of what you are getting. Also,if you’ve used the less expensive ones and really like them, then why waste your money? I have used both, and while there is a bit of difference, I’ll stick with the less expensive ones and save my money for other products, like Distressed Oxides❣️
I also bought makeup brushes instead of PF brushes due to the price point, and they work fantastic! I actually bought 2 sets for less than 1 set of PF. I’ve had no issues at all and I love them. They fit my budget. So glad you’ve become a convert! They make it so easy, right? Thank you again! 💕🙋♀️
Awenda 😎😉
Wow Alexandra! These Life Changing Picket Fence blending brushes seem to be the “cats meow” of blending brushes! I have found the Tim Holtz circular felt blenders a bit difficult to use. I think that these would be as you have shown, super easy to use! I need to pick up some of the Distress Oxides they look like the apply just like butter. Thank you again for an informative and especially awesome demonstration! ~😺Katz
I have these blending brushes and I love them. I bought them the first day I saw them and they are perfect for me. My favorite distress oxide color is worn lipstick followed closely by tumbled glass.
The colour palette you chose to do an example today is exactly what I would have chosen, they're my favourites too! Cracked Pistachio being my current favourite. Great video, full of great information and loving your hair today!!!
I bought my brushes on amazon for way less money. Love them for my makeup and bought some for ink blending.
Unless you try the PF brushes you don't know what you are missing, I got 2 different sets on Amazon and they PALE in comparison,
I agree with you Whooo Ami, the makeup brushes on Amazon are amazing! I think I payed like $11 and they were perfect for blending. The picked fences ones are way too overpriced and will need to come down before I buy some.
Beatriz Aguillon i think that’s about what I paid and you get so many brushes but I find I use the two or three larger brushes and they clean up very easily, unlike having to buy all those sponges that fall apart quickly.
Whooo AmI , I totally agree with you. Happy crafting 🥰
swatts1195 can you share what the differences are between the two? I’ve seen a few comparison videos and from what these crafters say, there’s no difference. Kind of like how the Misti is so overpriced compared to other stamp platforms and I own two of them, plus Tim’s We R Memory keeps and some other brand who’s name eludes me at the moment. Crafting is Definitely a costly business. 😉
I'm just startng to use brushes after not getting the smooth blends with the Tim Holtz foam. I have some of these on order so i am doubly excited now after seeing your endorsement.
Brushes make me a much better blender than sponges. I am too heavy handed and get rings. You make all the products look great! :-)
Thanks so much
Wonderful informative tutorial. Thank you. I don’t have any PF or otherwise blending brushes but I would like to get a set, especially after your detailed review. Thank you so much. Wishing you a super week. Hugs Susan
I just bought some makeup brushes from my local Miniso - they look exactly like the Picket Fence brushes, but were so much cheaper!! These brushes have made my blending so much better. I like blending now - I hated it with the other brushes, sponges, daubers etc that I tried before then. With the brushes I get really great results and it is easy on the hands too! Craft tools don't have to cost the earth to be good!
@Awenda Agree completely, but they must think we are schmucks of we are going to fall for it - they have done it with the stamp shammies, these brushes, scissors... I will pay for something if I need it but these everyday things rebranded and made more expensive, sorry, no. I'd rather save my money to buy other things!
The first color you used didn't show up on camera. These brushes make blending so much smoother and easier than the sponges. Love them!
I like the freezer paper idea
I really love the sponges shaped like mushrooms. But I did fall in love with blending brushes also. I bought bunch of single ones in same size. But I also bought the set of ten too. They do make smooth blends for sure.
Love the Picket Fence brushes!! No more dauber dots!! Love your videos!
Interesting and informative video. I don’t know whether they are available widely in the US at the moment but the Creative Expressions Smoothies are great for blending, they are a denser foam, washable and come in two sizes.
Thanks for the demo. You're right some people do swear by picket fences. They're kind of pricey though and I agree with you if they would make them all in one size or maybe just two sizes in a package it would be really nice. There might be a time and a place for the smaller ones but overall I'd rather use the bigger ones and then I could use some other kind of dabber or something for a smallerl area.
Love the makeup brushes but not the picket fence way to pricey got mine on amazon and love them never use the sponge ones now
That’s what I did. $10. For 11 I believe.
If you compare the PF and the knockoffs you will see the difference,
swatts1195 I’ve found they work the same and for using them as a hobby and not a living, they fit perfectly into my budget. I guess we need to do what’s best for us individually. And create happiness! 💕
Squeezed Lemonade Distress Oxide is my very favorite!!!
Thank you for the tip on storing your Pixie Sprayed Stencils! Now if I could only get my hands on some...And a huge thanks for the heads up on 10% off at Ellen Hutson. I just missed their 20% off weekend while I was on vacation and then I hate making my purchase then. This softens the blow. Abandoned Coral DO all the way!
Awesome blending
Thanks for sharing!
Really appreciate your honesty--I can't see myself buying multiple sets but might break down and but I saw somewhere--I think on Gina K's site that you can buy a set of two.
Bought the makeup brushes... love them.
Thank you for this review! I would have liked to see how these brushes do with the regular Distress inks on a non-specialty/non-coated cardstock (e.g. Neenah Classic Crest Solar White). That, imo, would be the real test. Also, a direct side-by-side comparison with makeup brushes. I got a set of makeup brushes from Amazon--vegan, no less! I haven't used them much--yet--but just can't justify spending mega-$$$ for something like blending brushes. Also, thank you so much for the freezer paper tip! I've sprayed my more intricate stencils with Krylon Easy Tack, and kept them initially on wax paper. BIG mistake! Even the wax paper stuck to the adhesive. I was able to peel it off all the stencil surface, but what a pain and a mess! I tried acetate or page protectors, too, which seem to work better, but I will definitely go with the freezer paper now. Have a wonderful day! :)
Love your videos. My fave is abandoned coral distress oxide. Bev (5/21/2019)
I actually like the picket fence brushes. I am getting older and have arthritis and they are much easier to hold and use than a straight brush. Good for us oldies
I purchased yoseng brand brushes on Amazon...set of ten for about $15. I also purchased 4 of the Picket Fence brushes. They look exactly the same front/back and perform the same for ink blending in my experience. I put washi tape on the Picket Fence brushes....otherwise I couldn't tell them apart.
Thank You ... just ordered a set to test. Nice price $9 for 5! Will test against my pickets ... lol
Will be here tomorrow.
Dudeless Ranch because they are the same! They just ordered a bunch of them from China and slapped their brand on it and priced them at $50.
Have you tried dollar store makeup brushes? I would like to see you try that in a video.
How did I miss this live? I have been looking at these... but, do NOT have 40+$ to "risk" on "new" blending foams. I like the foams and brushes for different techniques.
Seems I am a craft tools junkie. I seem to buy everything you experts recommend ... lol
Believe it or not I have all of those ... even the picket fence.
I am now done with everything but the brush sets ... NO MORE SPONGES.
I guess it is time to try out my own test on all of the brushes I have. My educated guess is the Picket Fence will win out. Ease of use is a big thing for me (time wise). Struggling for a good blend with less expensive tools is no longer my cup of tea.
LOL.......I've done the same!
Picked Raspberry Distress oxide is My fave
Brushes look a lot easier to work with than the blending tools. Blending, in general, is new to me, and I 'm working with regular distress ink. I'm going to have to watch the other video to see the difference between the other tools. I'm still new around here and am wondering if there was a review of the Tim Holtz blending brushes. The smaller size of them looks nice. Hmm favorite color in the distress line... it really depends. Wilted violet/stormy sky/faded jeans... picking just one is too hard. 😅🙈
MeWho I'm a year in to crafting. I haven't done a ton of ink blending probably because I struggled a lot with other tools. The Picket Fence brushes are life changing when it comes to blending! And they're way less painful which is a huge perk for me.
@@sleepydawn2431 thanks for the comment. I guess it is time to save up money for some brushes. They look amazing, but kept flip-flopping between them and the Tim Holtz ones. There are more videos about the Picket Fence brushes, but I like how compact the Tim Holtz ones are. Maybe I'll grab a small set and see how they work first... after I finish organizing my room and desk. 😅
❤️❤️❤️
Was looking for the sleeves that you store your stencils in? Can you tell me where you got them from please
they are brutus monroe cargo sleeves i did a video a few weeks ago with all my storage options and ideas
Distress oxide are my favorite, can't pick a favorite color! That would be like picking a favorite child!
Good video review! What was the name of the paper that you like to blend on? Thank you!
I like Tonic Ultra Smooth White, it should be linked in the description
Wow! OK. I may be sold.. in several months... lol
Loved this video. I’ve been in the fence (pardon the pun) about these. I am a perk member but when I entered the code into Ellen Hutson it says expired. Aren’t we supposed to have discount all month long ? Is there a separate code? Thanks so Much Alexandra!
Me too! Code says expired. I wonder how many sales they've lost because of that glitch?! Add to that $20 International Shipping...no way I can do that. I just pressed cancel and will make do with my Tim Holtz ones which are great.
Megan Harrington Megan - I ended up going on to the facebook page for HH members and found the code there.
@@kimcarlisle1510, oh thanks so much Kim! I'll take a look there. xx
The perks code is different to the one in the description, its always in the group or on the community wall or any issue email support@thehedgehoghollow.com we are always here to help
Hedgehog Hollow Thanks Alexandra! I ordered mine after getting the perks code on Facebook plus a few more things. Then went to Tonic and got a few goodies too! Thanks so much.
Will the pixie spray work on my cricut mats that are losing their stickiness?
yes it works really well
I thought the brushes had bristles until I watched your video. It makes me wonder how long the foam will last, the smaller finger sized foams start to break down fairly quickly. I would have liked to see you use them with other inks (& colours), rather than oxides that blend so easily anyway. I've watched a few others use them and besides the angle of the handle being easier to use, I don't really see the benefit.
I just checked them out on Amazon, got a close up look and they do have bristles. Sorry about the mess up in above comment. I still would like to see other inks and a mix of colours used.
Ok, I joined your channel but... the discounts don’t work, the link doesn’t work, there is no where to get help! What do I do?
you can always email us for help support@thehedgehoghollow.com
P.S. Love the new hair! *newer hair!
Favorite color is lipstick
I bought the PF brush set (10) and and 2 cheap sets from Amazon, Having tested all three I can tell you that the LC brushes from PF are worth the money, HOWEVER, I don't think you need the full set. I reach for approx 4 on a regular basis. The Amazon cheap brushes don't hold the ink and one of the brands sheds terribly. Spend the $ and get the real thing.
Can I buy Pixie Spray in the UK. I have searched and it seems to be US only? Thanks
Not yet but the crafters companion stencil spray is great and thats a UK only
@@HedgehogHollow Many thanks
Why can you not blynd the regular with the oxide
The pigment/dye fusion in the oxide will contaminate your original dye pad
@@HedgehogHollow oh ok thank you
Peacock feathers and twisted citron.... mmm... mermaid lagoon... vintage photo... fossilised amber... let’s just say I haven’t met an oxide I don’t like!!
👋
Can you wash these and use them for different colors example green then wash red then wash then blue etc
These look fool proof for people who are not good at blending
Cari Shields Yes, you can wash them but you really don’t need too. Just rub them on a microfiber towel until the color is gone. Easy.
I just rub the brushes on a piece of card stock to clean. Then I'm never wasting ink, as I eventually have a background panel
Understand Blue has a great video on how to wash the brushes. I just got my supplies yesterday but haven't tried them yet. Most people say you don't need to wash them but I wipe mine on a microfiber cloth til the cows come home and still there's ink...
I wipe my brushes on a moist tidy towel like towel. I just rub lightly until there's no more color, lightly rub on a paper towel til it's no longer moist, voila! Done and clean.
I don't think you did a fair demo of blending when you used 4 colors that it would be hard to see if they didn't blendI I use these as well as other brushes and I love them. If I did not already use these I don't feel I could trust your review of them.
Abandoned coral all day :)
