  • In this episode working on fixing my VW T4 2.5tdi ACV engine, I decide to set the diesel pump timing now rather than when the cylinder head is fitted because I think it will be easier to do now with the head out of the way. To be fair this is that a hard a job but you will require a dti gauge and adaptor.
    Thank you for watching.
    Matt
    Tools required
    10mm 12mm 13mm socket and ratchet
    21mm on a breaker bar
Tool to hold the cam pump pulley
    21mm spanner
    DTi gauge
27mm socket to turn the engine from the crank/damper pulley
    Quick description
You fit the DTI to the back of the injection pump through the timing port via a threaded adaptor that fits between the injector pipes in the pump head
    Then Pre load the DTI
rotate the engine backwards(anti-clockwise) till the DTI needle stops moving.
    Zero the gauge.
Rotate the engine back up to TDC.(clockwise)
measure the reading on the DTI
The measurement you are expecting (or aiming for) is .55mm.
If the measurement in more than .55mm the timing is too far advanced.
If the measurement is less than .55mm the timing is retarded.
Slight adjust can be made from the idle pulley, I wouldn't recommend to do this.
To adjust the timing you do the following.
Slacken the pump lock bolt via the 10mm headed bolt, remove wedge and nip up.
Slacken injection pump timing belt at the cam pulley.
Hold spanner on the injection pump sprocket pulley and slowly undo the pump lock.
Set the DTI to desired position.
lock pump by tightening the bolt.
    Tighten cam pulley.
undo pump lock and refit wedge.
    Recheck timing.
Once you are happy that the basic position is set, make sure all pulleys are tight, and the pump lock set to unlocked.
You can purchase a dti timing kit by following this link amzn.to/3L3zx2S
This is not a guide or how to.

Hi. Nice explanation. You need to be sure that the pump is a bdc after you align the marks. You need to rotate the pump slightly clockwise until the dti doesn’t move anymore, then zero it, before then moving to 0.55mm anti clockwise. Apologies if you did this, wasn’t super clear on video. You can the confirm timing using VCDS once it’s running. Can’t wait to hear it running, keep the videos coming 👍👍

Thank you, I did do exactly as you said, but I got it all set up tested and then tested again, then realised I didn’t press record 🤦‍♂️ so when I done it again I couldn’t remember what I had and hadn’t said, I didn’t want to repeat myself but doing this I forgot to show me rotating the pump backwards to check it was bdc. Also that reflection on the dti you couldn’t see me zero the gauge. Once I get it running I’ll get it up to temp then check on VCDS 👍👍👍🤙🤙🤙

I bought the same kit, am I right in thinking the extension rod screws into the gauge rod? That’s what I did as it was too long to work otherwise and to make it work the tube was only partially screwed into the pump and sat loose and at that it barely clamped the gauge to it! The extension rod seemed too long! Got the van running with it but like a smokey bag of spanners so need vcds now although not convinced how good this set was for initial setup! Great video thank you 👍

I use vcds to set the injection timing after the engine is at 80°C.....( Aprox 5° BTDC)
    Ps
I have dti gauge...but I'd rather read the ecu ...then adjust the injection timing regarding the ecu says

I don’t have vcds, I do have an obd tool and it does tell me degrees, but I only use that after I timed it just to double check.

Hey Matt, grate videos about setting up the injection pomp using the gate tool. Hey, do you have any knowledge where to find BDP on 2.5TDI 102hp 2003 with automatic gearbox?

Hey Twiggs! Love the video! Could you point me in the right direction where I can buy that kit? I've been searching ebay but all I come up with is kit's that cost like 30-100£

Thank you for your feedback. I’ve just had a look and the seller I got mine from has sold out. Also it looks like the prices have gone up since the beginning of the year, handy bit of kit to have tho and it’s still cheaper to pay the extra to get the timing kit rather than getting a garage or someone else to do it

would this gauge work on the 2.4 engine diesel pump

    • @TwiggsT4
      @TwiggsT4  Рік тому

Yeah it should work, I’ve not done one of these but I have read before on forum the fuel pumps can start to run retarded as they wear with age. Autodoc tec say to adjust to .60mm lift instead of the normal .55mm. Personally I’d time to .55mm run van upto temp then see how the timing is using an obd2 diagnostics tool, and then make adjustments

I got a kit from eBay which had the adapters to screw into the fuel pump, I have another set of dti and tested the accuracy of the eBay gauge and it’s accurate enough to do fuel pumps

Hello, greetings from Turkey. my 2.5 vehicle shakes at 1300 1500 rpm at idling and shakes at take-offs. My vehicle is 325000 km, how much should the advance setting be, thanks

    • @TwiggsT4
      @TwiggsT4  2 роки тому

For the pump timing it should be set with the dial gauge at 0.55mm but you can advance it too 0.57mm which people recommend on the forums

It can yes, although it could be the engine mount on the gearbox, or it could be the dual mass flywheel
