  • The CR-10/S is by far one of the most popular "kit" 3D printers. I love mine but I had some issues with the design. I decided to update my CR-10s to deal with the issues and hopefully improve the printer as a whole. In today's video, I will be going over all the mods I have done to my CR-10s and why I think they improve the printer.

    Great video! I just got a CR-10s about a month ago and I am definitely using your mods. Thank you for taking the time to make and post these amazing videos.

    My CR-10S favorite mods: PEI build surface, 750 watt bed heater (Im in love with ABS - 60 sec to 100c!), all metal extruder clamp thingy, rubber motor vibration dampners (these solved all the vibration for me), motor smoother boards (if you use Klipper /w OctoPrint add one to the extruder too - you'll be printing THAT fast). I do industrial size printing and am looking at doing a main board swap and going 32bit (Klipper sold me on the benefits with my 8bit board). Moving the entire computer to a micro ATX case with a complete re-cabling (I do electrical engineering / programming in college and 3D printing is a really fun (and inexpensive) hobby for this). I wish a company made solid aluminum or copper heat beds like 1cm thick that would mount to this (I dont feel like drilling if I dont have to). Right now Im using the stock aluminum platter with a sheet of glass (thermal pasted) with a sheet of PEI. A thick sheet of aluminum could be leveled easier than glass at a factory. All in all the CR-10S was a headache but its running good now for the money how can you beat it? I spent $750 on it bahhh

    Savage build, dude! Love it

  • @pr0xZen
    @pr0xZen 3 роки тому

    It certainly isn't all negligence or using up leftovers. With this build volume, you can easily do single prints that chews through multiple full filament spools. Then a filament runout sensor, and stop and resume functionality accordingly, becomes _really_ handy. If not critical. The sensor is basically just a microswitch, some use a microswitch with an idler wheel on the lever. So making your own, doing a custom housing, baking it into another mod - is very simple and easy. On the CR-10S and CR-10S Pro variants, all 3 terminals (common, open and closed) are wired, that way the controller knows the difference between the filament having run out, and the "sensor" itself being disconnected. If you only wire two of them, the controller doesn't know the difference between one of the two sensor states (depending on if you wire it NO or NC), and the "sensor" not being there.

  • @Inkomstkatt
    @Inkomstkatt 5 років тому +2

    For the filament run out sensor: I just superglued mine into place. Not ideal if you expect to ever need to detach it, obviously, but a cheap, quick and easy solution to it popping off the frame whenever the extruder retracts filament.

  • @MrJohnnywlf

    I added a binder clip to my filament sensor works like a champ and cheap

    • @pr0xZen
      @pr0xZen 3 роки тому

      The filament run-out sensor is basically just a microswitch (lever type, the one for the Pro has an idler pully on the switch lever) so you could very easily make your own in a different format to better suit your individual setup. Or bake it into some other mod bracket or cover.

    Great video and standalone! The link to the mod collection is confusing though since it contains so many different versions. Would it be possible for you to list out all the mods and extra hardware you needed to buy with links? For those of us with only 1 printer, we need to print out all the right parts before taking the printer apart otherwise it would be a pain to put everything back to print the missing/forgotten part or wait for shipment. Thanks!

  • @owenpeery2788
    @owenpeery2788 4 роки тому

    Most of these issues are ones I'd like to fix, if I went one mod at a time, is there an order that would be best? I'm a little intimidated about putting all the electronics under the bed the way you have. I wonder if I could modify the feet with racquetballs to be tall enough that I can just place the whole control box underneath without disassembling it. Would that change some of the cable management ideas in this video, ie some wouldn't work because placement would be different since box is still intact? If I put the whole box underneath, then I won't need to custom LCD mount and I already have the mini sd to sd card adapter so it's easier to plug in sd cards.
    In order of importance for me
    1. Get the control box under the printer somehow and the filament spool on top to reduce footprint
    2. Some variation of the cable chain for better cable management
    3. camera holder, although I have a small tripod with flexible legs and I put an old phone in front and it works well, so I'm not sold on the camera mount
    4. Maybe the gantry mount for stabilization
    It seems like keeping the control box intact simplifies what you have to print but also leaves open the possibility of going that route if just putting it under doesn't work out as well.

  • @jmgraydz
    @jmgraydz 5 років тому +1

    Pros looks amazing. Cons. Holy crap with the wiring. You should have found a metal box to place it in, in case you know it catches fire... also you have way to much weight at the top with zero support front to back. Tall models will suffer. I would put some kind of wire or bracket to maintain the vertical

    Vibration is a devil for the ears and the print quality and I wanted to get rid of both problems.
    My solution was to place a 500 x 500 x 50 mm concrete tile on the work table, using the original 4 rubber supports from the CR-10 between tile and table as vibration suppressor.
    Four hard rubber stands provide the support between CR-10 and the tile to provide a firm connection the frame and a large mass.
    The result is, that the vibration noise has diminished considerately as has the vibration of the CR-10 frame.
    In the original setup, the resonance of the frame induced by the nature of the stepper motor motion has a tendency to produce waves on the vertical sides of the print.
    These waves have been drastically reduced with the new setup.
    The next step is to introduce a new stepper motor controller with a sinus-wave-like waveform, - still have to find the right solution.
    I'm still a newcomer in this technology, but have worked as an electronic engineer in development since 1978 :-).
    Regards from Denmark

    Hi, hoping you can help. I have a brand new CR-10s and when I save my slicing from Cura and then try to print it, the print starts in the top left hand corning instead of in the center where it should. I'm sure this is just a setting issue cause the test print I did first printed in the center and perfect. What I am trying to print is a two piece filament adapter for the larger spools. I thought it was that so I tried a different single piece nosile holder and it does the same thing and they print right over the glass clips.

    Great stuff. As I am running the Tevo Tornado, would love to know if similar mods for the control box can be adapted like the CR-10 which, as it's a knock off type, it should be. Running a direct extruder feed to the E3d-V6 hotend but the control box and cable management really sux as standard. Should the control board also be upgraded? sorry if a bit off topic, but it seems what you have done here can be directly transferred to the Tornado. Love to hear your thoughts.

    Horrible printer. Not worth the money. I've been printing with this device over 2 months. Always a problem. Screws gets loosen during long prints. Heating bed problems. You need to adjust this before the prints and after. One project Ive printed 4 days of non stop print, nozzle part (bottom wheel screw) readjusted due to vibration and damaged the project. there's many other problems. So those guys who say such nice thing about this is because they get free parts and even printers from the company.
