Remember when Dream said to Death, "and I am far more terrible than you." Yeah, he wasn't lying. Dream is kind of an a-hole but you have to remember that he's not human and does not make choices based on human morals, ethics, and empathy. He has existed since the multiverse began and is not just The Lord of Dreams for humans, but for all creatures across time and space. Trying to understand his motivations is impossible.

The thing to keep in mind about the Endless is that they are universal beings. When Dream does something we consider ruthless, you have to remember he does not think like a human thinks. He's beyond such petty thoughts.

In the comics, we do see times from the Sandman’s “youth”, when him not taking his responsibilities seriously enough resulted in the death of entire galaxies. The entity we are seeing now is someone who’s seen some shit…

Well, the thing with Gault was definitely trauma-induced. His agency and dignity had been taken from him for so long, it's quite natural that when his choices and decisions were questioned, he lashed out in defense of them. It's also a very sore subject for him when his competence as a leader is questioned, because he already felt that what happened to the Dreaming was his failure and his fault. It's also strange to dispute that he IS quite petty.
The Endless are not human, but Dream would be pretty useless as a protagonist if he were completely alien and we couldn't empathize with him at all.

As unreasonable as dream can be, he's also seen so much, he's knows the damage that can be done by these things and rose doesn't understand that yet. But every character has something to learn and grow from.

It is also important to remember that Dream's power is over dreams, not directly over the living or the dead. In order to make Hector and Lyta realise that they were living in a hopeless dream he had to remove the illusion, otherwise Hector would not travel to the Sunless Lands and Lyta wouldn't have let him go. There really was no easy way to do it but to show them both the truth that Hector was dead. And there was really no way you can be gentle about that.
[There are refugees who have managed to create a life in the dreamlands but in doing so they are no longer quite real, even if they may once have been. It really wasn't an option for either Lyta or Hector. They were both too real.]

So the thing with Dream that everyone forgets is he is not Human, he does show empathy in small ways- like waiting to take Gualt until Rose had enough information to find Jed, or when he was allowing them to say their good-byes. But Dream is an Endless and he has a hair trigger- so when Lyta told him to get out of 'Their House' that was it for him. Everything in the dreaming in his, no matter what.
As for the baby- since the baby was concieved in the Dreaming, it is part of the endless and could be used against him. He never said he would take the child when it was born, just that someday he would come for it. I have no doubt he would have let it grow up with Lyta... but she ruined that in the comics.

I'm a big fan of the comic,¹ and have been for decades. As such, I wasn't very happy with this adaptation. However, watching these reactions, and listening to their discussions, I've come to appreciate what the show can be for others. After all, I'm viewing this with that comparison always in my head. So while I see _X, Y_ and _Z_ on the screen, I'm thinking _"Meh, they were done better in the comic."_ And newcomers that enjoy it, are seeing _X, Y_ and _Z_ and probably saying something to the effect of, _"Wow, how interesting and original!"_
So, as I said to _-Stikki-_ and _-Neven-_ _Steven_ and _Nikki,_ I'm really glad you are enjoying it so much. Even if I didn't have this appreciation for how others are enjoying it, I still would never begrudge anyone said enjoyment.

Having read the comics and seen the TV show, I’ve always regarded Dream to be a good being, but not exactly kind. It’s not that he can’t have his kind moments, but compared to Death he’s a slightly more scary being, especially if you upset him. Though, a phrase that comes to mind for Dream is: Looks like he could kill you, but is actually a cinnamon roll. At least in the TV show.

I like the switch up in these story arcs because it further reveals that, though Morpheus is the narrative protagonist, he can end up in an antagonistic position as well. He does have his reasons, but there certainly are things he could handle differently. Dealing with Hector, for instance. I get that Morpheus is agitated and frustrated with things, but Death is his older sister, and she’s very kind and helpful. I get the feeling she really wouldn’t mind if he called her in as a counselor for the situation. It wouldn’t be meddling. It would be working together to resolve things in a better way. I think Death would actually be quite proud of him if he reached out for some help.
I think there’s more to it than “he’s always been this way.” Morpheus seems to have had some personal insecurities exposed by his captivity, and the consequences of it, and going too extra with handling things himself. This happens to be a dire circumstance when he particularly should be more accepting of assistance. Of course, it’s not just petty stubbornness for his own sake. I know he’s also mindful of not troubling the others with his problems. Sometimes it’s just better to do so, though.
The cereal industry sure has gotten weird, huh? 😉
In the comics continuity, the two serial killers mentioned as not making it to the convention, and the reasons they didn’t, ties into other series. The Boogieman (or Bogeyman) did, indeed, meet his end in Louisiana, in the pages of _Swamp Thing_ (what is so hard to understand about “Don’t bring your evil into my swamp”? They just don’t listen), and The Family Man in _Hellblazer,_ Constantine’s territory.

14:08 - The way he made Hector disappear in front of her. While harsh and definitely not ideal...it's a splash of cold water that she needs to move on from her dead spouse. It's reality. And Dream is definitely needing to keep his realm in order. That means no dead and no living. Just dreams. I totally understand why he did it this way.

I found the “cereal convention” so intriguing. It’s like one of those rare sights in nature, like when you see Great White Sharks which are famously solitary and even territorial predators coming together in huge numbers and coexisting. I mean the fact that The Corinthian is being greeted like he’s Robert Downey Jr. at Comic Con was oddly funny.
Speaking of sharks, when Gilbert/Fiddler’s Green found out it was a convention for SERIAL KILLERS it reminded me of my favorite line John Constantine has in the comic which is “I’ve been out of my depths before, and something tells me there are sharks in these depths.”😂😂

Hey, Nikki, Steven! It seems to me (I might be wrong) that you misunderstand Morpheus in the sense that he isn't such an a**hole as it appears. Compared to Desire & Despair he is the one that cares more to the stability of the universe and he himself abides by the rules and knows the disaster than comes with breaking the order. In the end, concerning matters of The Dreaming, he is the administrator that has to take the rough decisions no matter what or how he or others feel. As a point of reference- in episodes 4 and 6 he points out that the universe has rules and it is of utmost importance to follow them. Love your reactions of The Sandman and not only! Dream is actually undergoing some character development. When he talked to Death back in episode 6, he was talking about how nice it was to have a purpose beyond his function, and she said "our purpose is our function."
So he just took that lesson and started applying it across the board with no nuance or flexibility at all.
He's trying... but I guess it's not that easy for an Endless being to change all at once.

I actually was relieved when Dream finally cut Lyta and Hector off. I know it seems cruel because they love each other but I identify with characters like Dream and Dr. Strange who are very big on 'the bigger picture'. When you've lived a long time, and you see humans constantly making decisions that can affect millions for generations to come, decisions that benefit them NOW but they will die eventually and the things they messed up will stay messed up long after they're gone, as Dream you have to harden your heart because humans are very near-sighted. Exhibit A being the ass who locked Dream up for 100 years, died and left him there and the world in shambles because of his selfish desires. He never even got his son back! But a lot of people lost their families because of him.
Like you cannot sacrifice everyone else's lives because of these two and I would be lying if I said I shed a tear for them. Your husband is dead. Everything you get with him after that is extra and an amazing blessing that you never would have had if Rose wasn't your friend. You would have lived the rest of your life without him and eventually, hopefully moved on and maybe remarried and have a family. Lyta was starting to accept it. She knew it was a dream in the beginning and just laughed at Hector when he begged her to stay. However, because she's in the vicinity of a dream vortex she gets this amazing chance to have a baby with her dead husband. Even if it was for a short time, I would have considered the entire scenario a gift, the extra time with him, the baby, all EXTRA that I didn't bargain for because my husband's supposed to be dead!! I would have been thanking Rose and Dream and sneaking out the back door. I know a lot of people don't see it that way but I would have walked away with the EXTRA memories that I never would have had otherwise without them and cherishing everyday with my child until Dream came for him because again, also borrowed time. This child should never have been! And I get to spend time with them? I will take what I can get because it was game over after husband dying.

As many people in the commenats have noted on is that the endless aren't humans with magical abilities, they are entities that stand above even gods, so their frame of reference and morals is on an intergallactic multiverse kinda level. If you want a morpheus who feels more ancient, aloof and dickish then the one in the show then I'd recommend the comics/ audible version. They are amazing but probably not that good if you wanna do the future seasons on your channel (which I hope you do:))

I'm curious if Dream's claim on Lyta's baby will be contested at some point. After all, he might have been conceived in a dream, but the father isn't a dream manifestation--I'm pretty sure it's the actual dude's ghost (ripped out of the afterlife by Vortex shenanigans, hence why he couldn't remember the exact layout of her dream house and why he evaporated in such a gruesome way), so wouldn't that technically make it Death's baby? (If you know, don't answer--I'm just positing the idea, not fishing for spoilers.)

One of the big overarching themes of the entire Gaiman run of Sandman was: Morpheus is (/has been throughout his existence) kind of a dick, him realizing that, and then what steps he needs to take to not be that way

No, no, it's the same Morpheus. The same Morpheus who walked up to hell's gates and demanded that they open for him because he is Endless ISN'T the same Morpheus who demanded Hector go to the Sunless Lands where he belongs and get out of his Dreaming. Nope. It's tracks. Bold-faced then and bold-faced now. It's the same Dream, you all just don't like what he's doing now.

Dream(Morpheus)'s abilities are not "magic", his power and abilities are way beyond magic and are on cosmic level, think more akin to the fundamental cosmic beings in the Marvel universe like "Eterntity" that can shape realty, stars, galaxies, dimensions,etc.. simple "magic" can't do that
Morpheus is one the ENDLESS the lord of dreams and nightmares for ALL sentient races across the entire Multiverse, he not being an "asshole", he's being practical

I read the comics a long time ago, a lot has changed since then, Neil Gaiman (the creator) is a master, I've read everything he released in books and comics, one thing I can say about the child conceived in the realm of dreams... is that nothing is for nothing, this child will become something absolutely incredible

I think Morpheus has had trouble finding them all because Jed was severed from the dream by Gault, Rose makes her own dreaming, and Corinthian is a nightmare so he doesn't dream at all.

While not *_my_* ideal adaptation,¹ your videos highlight how this show can be everything _to you_ (and others), as the comic² is _for me_ (and I also presume, is to others).
So glad you are enjoying it. I may not like it _in comparison_ to what I know of this story, but I am beginning to appreciate it more through your experience. . _.Through your enjoyment._
_-Stikki-_ and _-Neven-_ _Steven_ and _Nikki,_ be well! And _sweet dreams!_ 🙋🏼‍♂️

¹ ─ As a longtime reader and fan of the comic, I was unhappy with much of this adaptation.
² ─ As well as the recent dramatization from *Audible.* An absolutely phenomenal near-verbatim dramatization of the comics. 🥰 Also, the talent involved is delightful.

I love comic so I didn't really understand how I felt about this series. I showed it to my sister and she loved it. And then my father started to talk about the show and Tom Sturridge's incredible acting. He said Dream is an extremely interesting character (though he didn't know anything about comic and he watched the show in russian dub without Tom's voice)
So I decided if my family loves it and Neil Gaiman is okay with it, then I will allow myself to fully enjoy it too.
I mean comic is too good, no adaptation will ever be as great

You got to remember dream wasn’t ever a good guy nor bad guy. Hers a god pretty much. He doesn’t have the empathy us humans have plus those who are that powerful are used to creating thing an destroying this. Gods don’t think like oh this would have been easier this way rather then this way. Dream is learning the empathy as he moves forward. Think bout that as you watch superhero movies. When it comes to power it would be to easy to just create or destroy things . There needs to be a story / reason behind things. If that makes sense. We’ll great reaction. Till next episode have a good night.

The Endless aren't human, and Dream rather notoriously lacks compassion.
That said, he received a taste of human suffering during his century of imprisonment, and that did change him, significantly.
In many ways, Gaiman's story is about Dream's growth into a more humane being -- but it takes awhile.
The Endless have a lot of personal inertia to overcome.

I do agree that Jed's foster father was trash, but so was his foster mom to me. She did have options to help herself and Jed like call the foster agency to save Jed, call the cops, or when Jed ran away the last time, she could've helped him and drove off to get away from her husband. She did none of those things and it prolonged her and Jed's suffering.

You're not wrong but bare in mind she was likely not in her right mind. Years with Barnaby doing everything he can to break down her personality and make her dependant on him may have left her unable to mentally function without him. It's a recognised issue with long-term abuse victims; they just can't see a life outside the situation they are in.
Notably this is a change from the books, where Clarice was an active participant in the abuse of Jed with no evidence Barnaby ever mistreated her.
