The Sandman comics drew in a lot of characters from the Swamp Thing comics, including Matthew Cable (who died in his sleep in the Swamp Thing comics and became Matthew the raven as a human) and John Constantine. In this episode the imposter at the convention impersonated The Boogie Man, who died in the Swamp Thing comics (in the Louisiana bayou). The Corinthian is the replacement guest of honor for The Family Man, who was killed by John Constantine (starring in the Hellblazer comics)
Sort of funny how _The Sandman_ has this little collection of tie-ins with _Swamp Thing,_ including the less direct connection that Swamp Thing first appeared in an issue of _The House of Secrets_ (the anthology series which Abel hosted).
As far a reading the Sandman Comics. Season 1 covers 17 of the first 18 issues of the original comics and 2 1/2 of the reprinted collected volumes. The first collected reprint is volume 1 call "Preludes and Nocturnes" which covers issues 1-8 of the comics and episode 1-6 of the TV show. Vol 2 "The Doll's House" covers issues 8-16 of the comics and episodes 6-10 of the show. There is overlap of issue 8 "The Sound of her Wings" is reprinted in both of the first two comic reprints. In the TV show episode 6 the first half is the story is issue #8, the second part is part of the The Doll's House arc. The show skipped the story of Issue #9m but that story will probably get told in season 2. The Bonus episode is from the 3rd reprint volume. Issues 17 & 18. There are audio books available too. The first covers the first 20 issues of the comics. The audio books follows the comics more closely than the show so it doesn't have all the changes. It would be the same as reading the first 3 reprint volumes.
In the Sandman universe, all sorts of things can happen when you die. You might go to Hell if deep down you believe you should, or if a higher power sends you there. You might go to Heaven, or some other mythological afterlife if you deeply believe in it. You could be reincarnated. A few other exceptions may exist as servants for certain Endless. For example, if Dream has the position open for his raven, you might be offered that job if you die in your sleep. All the others are up to Death to help you reach.
People go to hell because they believe they should be there- unless you’ve done something to involve a greater power. Like poor Nada. Demons or the children of Lilim have always been there i believe. They were the result of Lilith having “ dalliances” with fallen angels and Hell was their homeland. Angels were made by the Creator. The Dead typically go to the Sunless Lands, though I’m not sure if that qualifies as “Heaven” like the Silver City, or a waiting place. Some things aren’t as cut and dry.
Oh, I highly recommend reading it. Though if you want to avoid anything that might spoil whatever you’re likely to see in the future of the show, just avoid issue 9. Everything else from 1 to 18 is covered already in season 1, so you’re safe with those. Well, I say “safe”, but you might find yourself compelled to read on further than that. Just don’t blame me if you can’t resist. 😄
I definitely recommend reading the first two volumes now. The show follows the overall structure of the plot, but a lot of the details of the story are very different. Some things about the comic I like better. Some things about the show I like better, but they are both awesome. The one issue that isn't included in the show might be considered a minor spoiler, depending on how they do things going forward. Three words: Backstory for Nada!
The comic books and audiobooks are both amazing. Maybe one of you could read them and one of you listen to them. Then you could review them on YT. The show is very similar, but they didi make significant changes.

Gilbert realizing what the convention was about in those three rooms was so really good.
The Sandman came out on August 5th 2022

I heard that Gaiman was taking the piss out of America's fascination and sometimes glorification of serial killers.
