- 2024 Mazda CX90 Phev review by The Straight Pipes. The Mazda CX-90 is putting down 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque from a 2.5L phev 4 cylinder. At $64,700 CAD, would you take it over the inline 6 Mazda CX90?

Mazda knocked it out the park with this one! Don't need a 3 row but eagerly waiting for the CX70
Me too. I'm concerned about the price though
@@jstrig Right now CX-90 are already slightly below msrp at some dealers in the US which should help.
@@jstrig it's best to hold off and save money than spend it on a car that you can't quite afford yet. I would caution you to buy a used car than a new one if you can't stomach the price of even a Mazda. Auto Debt is a scourge and should not be encouraged
@@jstrigIn USD it starts at $40k so the CX-70 will start with a 3. I’m guessing $34k before destination.
@@jstrig I think the price will hopefully go from like 35k-45k for the non PHEV that’s just a rough ball park, an MDX tops out at 70k and this tops out at 60k, so maybe 45k for a top CX70 vs 53k for a top RDX?
Main reason the charger didnt work at your house is due to the GCFI outlet - my EV had the same issue - for some reason the charger units will not accept the GCFI breaker as it has one built in - Try plugging into a normal non GCFI outlet
Same for my Tesla.
Sorry, what exactly is 'GCFI'?
This needs more attention these guys are actively scaring people away from PHEVs and EVs with their lack of electrical knowledge.
@@felixli5279 Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. Its a type of electrical outlet with a built in circuit breaker that turns the outlet off upon detecting electrical abnormalities.
Weird, the instruction manual for the charger specifically states to use a GFCI. Still, I’ll try without.
“I like the pumped in audio” When did this change!?! Yuri, get it together!
There’s certain cars with good pumped in audio and bad pumped in audio
Idk guys!!!! Lol
@@TheStraightPipesthere’s a good shit and a bad shit. Lol.
Sounds like a Mazda SUV fanboy lol
@@TheStraightPipes Thanks for mentioning this. On a related note, do you feel that EVs lacking the "visceral audible flair" of ICE engines is a knock against EVs? If so, does good pumped in audio simulating ICE engines change the dynamic? Does BMW and Hyundai creating all new sounds create a new path forward to reduce that impediment to EV adoption? Or is the ICE noise thing really just an excuse for people afraid of the future?
Absolutely the PHEV CX 90 all the way! I have one on order it will be here in August.❤ I absolutely love my CX 9 !
Did you receive it yet? How is it?
I test drove it yesterday, better than what I expected after I tested the inline 6 version. It's not perfect but definitely worth the money, give Mazda couple years they will work out all the quirks.
Quirks and features
What quirks?
@@jalmonte91 Transmission, it's not bad on PHEV but still needs some work. MHEV needs a lot more work.
@@jalmonte91 The CX-60 has been out in other markets for a few months and has the exact same power trains except a diesel is offered. Research the problems thay have been having and expect the same
@@GooseVan The transmission is exactly the same on all versions. The PHEV has a stronger electric motor/generator
Mazda makes some of the best cars coming from Japan. Period. Why more people don't buy them is a mystery to me. Maybe with this model and the newish CX-50 and the cool little CX-30 they will finally get the success they deserve. Maybe they'll bring back the RX-7 at some point. I can only wish.
They don't buy them because they are not practical. This is probably the least usable interior of any midsize SUV. Cramped seating, driveshaft hump, small cargo capacity. That's why the brand new CX-90 with all its accolades can easily be found on lots while Tellurides, Highlanders, and Pilots have huge waiting lists and dealer markups. Most "journalists" who fawn over this thing have lost touch with what the market wants. Mazda seems content to remain a niche player.
People STILL think they are connected with Ford. Their partnership is still affecting their sales even though they have nothing to do with them anymore. Such a shame. Love my cx9. Wouldn't mind the v6 power of the cx90 though.
What @plmn93 said, as a owner of a Mazda 3 and CX-5, there are times that I wish it is bigger so I can haul a big furniture, some plywood boards and etc. if you are a DIYer, Mazda does make you wonder why they just don’t make it a bit bigger. Otherwise this car is pleasant to drive.
@@plmn93 nah you’re crazy SUV is massive unless you’re 300lbs+ quit exposing yourself bud😂😂
@@liangzhao6638 true it was for handling tho that’s why the cx50 & cx90 were built on new platforms to maintain handling while finally making their SUVs a bit bigger
Your complaint was mentioned by manyy owners lol
"Except I don't want to spend money and keep my cx5 forever" , I think a lot of cx5 owners are on the same boat. The car, especially on the top trims, is just too good to give up.
Am in this group. CX5 is even more awesome with no payments. But the family has grown and the car is out of extended warranty. Test drove the CX90 IL6 and am so tempted to pull the trigger on the PHEV. ‘Except I don’t want to spend money’ 😂
I have a 2020 CX-5. I'm just waiting for them to make a CX-5 hybrid since I don't need the extra space the 90 has.
I paid off my 2016 CX-5 GT, so it's nice not having a car note. 135,000 miles and still nice and runs great! I hear they can go 300,000 to 400,000mi. I just bought a 2023 CX-9 carbon edition due to great deal, paid invoice price & Mazda loyalty $500 off & 0% interest from Mazda Finance. Can't afford CX-90 $55K & CX-9 just as nice for $13K cheaper. KEPT my CX-5 also, Love that thing! Why not? It still has 200K miles to go, I'll let my Son & Dad use it.
+1😂
I have a CX-5 and was looking to move up to a CX-70. But they say it is the same size as the CX-90 with one less row. Also everything about the CX-70/90 is completely new except for that 2.5l and the bugs will not be worked out for at least a few years. The CX-60 owners are already reporting problems.
To answer the heating question - I don't think it has to start the gas engine. You can use the app to preheat/precool the car and the car has a heat pump... so I'm assuming it can do it all electrically
Very nice and detailed video as usual !! Thanks guys. For your information the PHEV have Heat Pump so it should be good in winter to be in EV mode only !
Oh good. If I were to consider a PHEV, heat generation would be a big factor. Why have a PHEV if you MUST run the engine for heat half the year?
Is it the same for the Lexus NX 450h?
@@deansmits006 I have a PHEV now. Running your engine when you get to cruise ~ 35mph. Ensures fast warmup and efficiency. I don't understand this argument from PHEV folks. The whole point of PHEV is to still burn gas when needed. Gas engines provide heat faster than heat pumps too.
Traded in a 2023 RAV4 PRIME XSE PREMIUM...It's the king...However, I like the CX-90 so far (got it yesterday). I agree with them on how the system works. I like how, in normal mode, it will go to hybrid on the interstate around 70mph. This helps you automatically preserve the EV for where it's more efficient. It does go into EV at those speeds too. It switches back and forth. You can lock it into EV by selecting EV instead of Normal at start-up.
Oh, as a ND2 Miata owner, I took it out while the wife was sleeping and when to my favorite off-ramp: THE TAIL CAME LOOSE WITHOUT ESC intervention! It was STUNNING. It really does drive amazingly! Way better than our 2019 X7 (although that one was beautifully floaty on the interstate).
You think I should change my inline 6 to PHEV?
@@mbenton6Depends on which trim level. I would've bought the Turbo S because "Lane Tracing Assist" is a big deal for me (because I've owned Teslas for so long).
I do really like the PHEV. We've only had it a day though, but drove it home on interstate and country roads. It'll likely save you some money, even though it costs slightly more.
@@carsbykev7037 turbo S artisan red with tan-brown leather. Or top trim phev
@@mbenton6 I put another post up here about what’s missing from a top line Premium Plus PHEV and a Loaded Turbo S. Look at that post, and if you desire any of those features (I’d they’re deal breakers) you should get the Turbo S. The PHEV feels faster, btw. Try to drive them back to back if a dealer near you has one.
Did you calculate savings? It gets 25 miles on EV only and 25 mpg combined mileage on ICE. That means that one battery charge only saves at most 1 gallon of gasoline and in my area 1 gallon of gas cost less than recharging that battery with 16 Kwh. That is unless you get electric for free.
That is the sickest dashboard display Mazda ever created! Usually car manufacturer uses green, blue, white, red and orange, but the purple used by Mazda somehow looked sensually interesting.
I wish I could drive with the purple in any mode… I think it looks that good.
Loving this from Mazda. I hope they now expand on their BEV's.
I would love to get a PHEV which is only driven by electric motors, with more EV range (100 km) and the gasoline engine as a generator, similar to the MX-30 R-EV.
I’m loving my Turbo S Premium Plus and Mazda definitely hit a home run with this CX90. The personalization feature is one of my favorites. It is so nice to get into the car and says Welcome Ray and sets me up to my preset driving mode. Go Mazda🎉
How is the transmission so far in everyday driving ? I believe this is the million dollar question for a lot buyers.
@@kevtn8 I only have a few hundred miles on it so far but overall it is a smooth and quick shifting transmission. I have read some of the same on being jerky at a low speed feedback. Very different transmission from other Mazdas that I have owned, CX-5, CX-9 and MX-5, so I’m still getting used to driving it and my first car with I-Stop which I despise.
Now all you need is a sex robot and your life is complete.
I drive my own vehicle. Set the seat and steering wheel position once in the 5 years I have owned it. I know who I am and don't need a computer chip to tell me my name. But to each his own.
@@clarkkent9080 No need for a robot, I have nice big hands. The nice thing about the 90 is when you turn off and exit the car, the seat and steering wheel move out of my way to give me more space to get out. Almost like having your own personal valet.
@@RayBrown-u2n lol....I understand that in order to sell newer vehicles they put more and more technology in to the vehicle. I just find much out it worthless, cost adding, and more things to break. At what point do we let technology do things that we as humans are perfectly capable of doing?
I understand that the face recognition does not work all the time. So people are spending more time fooling around with trying to get it to work when they could make the adjustments themselves.
I am sure people could make a case for power turn signal stalks and climate controls that read your mind on the desired temperature. But you have to buy the Mercedes to get the automatic aroma dispenser and I find it hard to live without that
Sorry for so many comments, here's what's all missing from this TOP LEVEL Car (I have the PHEV Premium Plus):
-No power tilt/telescoping wheel
-No Interior-matched faux suede door panel (still has contrast stitching and piping)
-Nappa leather, but not Quilted
-No lane tracking
-No body colored wheel wells
-No Driver Personalization System
-No Adaptive Headlight
-No rear footwell lighting
-No Side Mirror reverse-tilt (they do power fold. Didn't see tilt in settings...I looked for it...Will look again)
-No illuminated tailgate taillights (Turbo S only: looks better going all the way across)
-No rear air conditioned seats
-Smaller trunk than 6 seater (The 7 seater 3rd row tilts back, keeping you from placing a 2nd carry-on on top of another...It matters...Check my page for a video of this soon)
-No automatic unlock on rear door handles
-No 2nd row center console (although Mazda's site states that it does?)
-No "Turning across path alert and brake" and Reverse brake support doesn't have "Pedestrian detection" according to the sight. I actually felt this system when turning right onto a road (alerted me of an oncoming car while creeping forward)
That's a lot of stuff missing for $800 MORE... But my wife likes riding on solar-sourced electricity. I'm bougie, so this bothered me quite a bit. It's her car though, and it likely will do what we need nicely. And it handles great.
On my Mazda 3 the side mirror reverse tilt happens when you have one of the mirrors selected on the driver door. There are no other settings for it. Just whichever mirror you have selected (as if you are going to adjust them) will be the one that tilts down in reverse.
I wish they didn't punish PHEV drivers as much....not having lane tracking, a touchscreen, the premium lights, or driver personalization just for picking the hybrid power train sucks.
@@djw1091994 Exactly, it's just too much important stuff... For mirrors: The car will be back soon and I'll make sure I had a direction selected. It's like that on a lot of vehicles I owned so I don't know why I didn't confirm that.
@@djw1091994 They definitely DO NOT tilt...but the ones in the Turbo S do...Just one more missing feature. About the Cruise: It works better than my Model S Plaid's when it comes to following distance / vehicles changing lanes while another vehicle in front of them is braking / etc. The distance function is very cool. But it pains me that my $60k didn't get lane tracing, as I'm sure it's amazing. I don't need "Hands-Off", I just want "easily stay straight."
It does have touchscreen carplay, you may wanna check some more. Go in to Communication settings, and click in to your phone’s name, scroll to bottom for always enabling touch in motion.
I’ve heard elsewhere that the premium plus trim on the PHEV CX 90 does not have memory for the mirrors, just memory for the seats
Yeah, just bought the Artisan Red...I wanted the white too, but the wife wanted Artisan...Which looks AMAZING at night, in the day too. Sometimes it can be Brown too. It's beautiful...But I would've bought the white. Gonna put a range test video up tomorrow or so. It charges quickly on our Tesla charger.
What’s the infotainment screen size
@@Avijit1308 I think there are two that they offer. Mine is a massive 12.3" and it's bigger than it appears in the youtube videos. It looks really good.
Is your screen touch enabled for android auto and apple carplay?
@@aditya81291 Just Apple CarPlay I think. I don’t own any Android phones, but I hear it’s just CarPlay.

beautiful.
It's ridiculous that Mazda doesn't offer the interior and tech of the Signature Inline 6 in the PHEV version. I really want that trim level in the PHEV, and the fact I have to choose between the 2 may just be what pushes me away from Mazda. I was at the dealership just yesterday looking at these, and they look and feel better than any other comparable non premium SUV.
Agree 100%. I think some of the stuff you can't get on the PHEV that you can get on the top I6 is stuff that people shopping in this segment are going to want to have (power tilt/telescope wheel, Nappa leather, ventilated 2nd row, adaptive headlights, lane centering, and a couple of other things.) I'm in the market for the CX-70 but if they do the same thing I'm going to end up waiting a year for them to fix it.
I work with Mazda doing the launch for consumers and dealers across Canada. In Halifax now wrapping it up and carrying on to Quebec City. Spent 2 months with the I6 and the PHEV. The reason they don’t offer the PHEV with signature features is the price point. Both come out to 65k. If PHEV had signature features it would be close to 80 with everything all in. The PHEV infrastructure is worth about 7k. Both get equal gas mileage though on the highway with 0.1L/100km difference average. Only PHEV benefit is the pure electric mode :)
I believe they’re trying to keep the car under $65k so that all trim levels are eligible for the federal rebate.
“a passenger car, where the base model Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) is less than $55,000; and
higher priced trims of these vehicles, up to a maximum MSRP of $65,000, will also be eligible for purchase incentives”
I can see customers getting pissed over trying to get all the fixings then having to shell out another $2500 extra. They probably predicted that very few people would go for that trim level since it’ll jump up significantly and not offer equivalent value.
@@gavanphotography7814 I placed a reply here going over ALL that was missing. This is what i assumed. Thanks for the confirmation. I'm most upset about the rear taillights on mine not going across and no reverse mirror tilt. I can do without the power steering column, but that's definitely next.
I would've paid the $2500 for it.
Love this new CX90 so much
I'm patiently waiting for the 70 phev! I think it'll be later this year it comes over to NA. I don't need the three rows.
Thanks guys. My choice too is the C-90 PHEV. I've driven them all and like the PHEV.
->"I think I'll keep my CX-5 forever." Yeah, me too. I've added SO many upgrades in powertrain (Sport Cork intercooler & pipes), gas hood struts, roof racks, LOTS of interior trim like lighted CX-5 door sills and (only) the tasteful Ali Babba Express interior trim - don't laugh, it's good stuff.. So yeah, I'm keeping mine "forever" too. It's beautiful, quick and fast. Plus my Michelin Cross Climate 2 all season tires are JUST as good in snow as the best snow tires I've ever owned.
I’m waiting for the Cx-80 in Europe. My next family-mobile. Hopefully
A follow up video to show how long that 1500W outlet will run on gas for extreme emergencies would be nice.
Mazdas largest SUV and you can’t fit a set of golf clubs in the cargo area. Truly wanted one of these and the width of these vehicles needs to be a foot wider. Measured the internal dimensions at a dealer and I think it was 39”. Hysterical.
The gears shifting in ev is trippy. I remember porsche having the 2 spd on the taycan and this mazda have 8 😂
Interesting, the Mazda engineers also preferred the Phev driving dynamics/feel over the inline six!!!!!
Mazda may not be a luxury brand, but they make such good cars! This and a Miata for a garage?
Ok i wanted to watch a few of your SUV videos after seeing the CX90 vs Palissade video and liking the content. I literally had to pause this video at 05:09 to comment that i loved the "Yuri forgot to ask" XD
I love the looks of the CX90! Too bad I don’t need that large of a vehicle!😞
Can't wait for Mazda 6 with that and manual transmission.
CX-60 PHEV did it's best launch in OFF-ROAD mode for some reason. It was half a second quicker to 100 than factory quoted time. Maybe you should try that mode next time just for fun.
This is probably my next family car - replacing a 2011 CX-9. I am disappointed in the eletric-only range though. The world NEEDS Phev's with 100 miles of range if we want to turn the tables and get more total EV miles driven. Electric only is not yet up to par for families who do lots of long driving trips and then PHEV's don't give you enough range except for a one-way trip to work for most folks. I'd take this car with 250 HP if it had more electric only range!!
Do you realize that electricity is not free and charging that battery (15 Kwh) cost almost the same amount as the gas it saves costs.

@@DEFE1994 Mazda3 is on a older FWD platform
It pretty much done deal. Japan may see Rwd sedan as early next year. My guess is NA market will get it in 2025 for 2026 model year. This meshes with Mazda USA timeline for them to focus on hybrids first of all their current crossovers over next 1.5 - 2 years.
I do not care about SUVs at all but I do like what Mazda does with the styling and driving feel (current Mazda3 owner).

The artisan red looks so good! Jacob is right bout that vibration on hard acceleration. The ride is very refined but when that happens it feels misplaced, almost like something wrong is happening. I am annoyed about the omission of smaller features in the top PHEV vs. I6turbo but overall I love mine so far. 2wks and still don’t need to refill my gas where I had to do it every 5-7 days in my Mazda 3.
Now put this engine in the CX50 and take my fucking moneyyyy!!😈
Watch the Care Care Nut review of the CX-90 before you say that
I wish the PHEV was designed without the context of the I-6 engine, that hood length could have been reallocated for more cabin space and practicality. But in aiming for a premium segment they made a great vehicle overall that's going to be a tempting upgrade for me, from a CX-5.
This would be a no brainer for me if they just had lane centering. I have long drives so lane centering really helps out with overall comfort and safety.
it has all that if you look at the specs: Lane Keep-assist System (LAS),
Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS),
Emergency Lane Keeping with Road Keep Assist . If I get it, I would disable all that, don't want it to ever take control of steering or breaking.
@@schwinnbiking mazda's LAS are not lane centering. They talk about it in the video. It's a lane assist, but not a lane keep/center. The difference is pretty big while driving

If you actually use more than five seats this is one of the worst choices.

The bit of body work above the rear lights is like 10% too bulgy. It’s like almost really attractive but not quite
If you get federal, provincial and Mazda loyalty, it is actually cheaper (marginally) than the inline 6 highest trim. That’s in BC, not sure in ON if the programs are the same.
Mazda understands that technology should be used to make *driving* better.
For pricing, you also get $2500 fed rebate and we have up to $2k prov rebate in BC, makes it same price as GT-P.

Should really only get this car with the inline-6 and top trip Signature with that interior.
Nah, the PHEV is easily the best version. The PHEV is the more "traditional" version and has a more reliable engine and smoother driving experience. It's as fast or faster than the I-6 Turbo S as well.
DAMN it looks good.
I’ve driven a 2011 Mazda 3 since 2017 and it has been a great car for me. I’m proud to drive this brand and I love the stuff they’re doing today. The new CX-50 looks really nice, I don’t want an suv but I want them I make a Mazda 3 that has some of that new design, more squared off instead of rounded everything. I also work at a car wash so I see a lot of cars in person, that metallic red color that Mazda has is fucking insane. It’s rare that a red car comes through with a better red than that Mazda metallic red.
I love the soul red crystal color! I have it on my Mazda!
I've been seeing almost exclusively Mazda ads on UA-cam for about two years now. Do they have ANY money left for R&D, after spending so entirely much on advertising ?

At the dealership, it looked like the CX-90 just gave birth to a near by CX-5.
That back end body lean around cliche is hilarious. Overall impressed tho and excited for cx-70.
Solid review here, except you don't focus on the fuel economy aspect. That's the big reason someone would opt for this version.

Lane centering is an optional pack even on the highest spec trim level. I think it's called Driver Convenience pack.
Do a summer special where you review local gta builds, that would be dope!
Been pricing these out for a bit. Just picturing 22 or 24” HREs 🤔
Car prices are insane these days ; but you already know that …😅
I Believe Toyota & Mazda did a collab on this, matter fact TMCC offers financing on Mazdas new line up. Not to mention, they're assembled in the same Huntsville manufacturing plant.....🤔.....interesting....🤔
The real question is long term maintenance, after the warranties have expired
Here in Ohio, we used to get 94 @ some stations. But 91,92,93 was premium. Some stations had 91 and 93 along with 87 and 89. Also ethanol! Some places i used to get 98, 102, 108 and 110 for my MX bikes!
We usually have 87, 89, 91. Some stations have 93 or 94 but definitely not most
I make at least half a dozen trips daily taking kids to school, sports practices, and other extracurricular activities. Having that twenty something mile electric range will save me so much in gas. I want one. And I actually like the plastic over the fenders black more than body colored.
Tsp.TrueCar.com 👍
25 miles of EV range on one charge.
or
25 Mpg EPA combined rating
so one battery charge (15 Kwh) saves 1 gallon of gas
In my area it costs $2.85 to charge that battery and one gallon of gas is $3.19
45 years to just break even on the $4,000 PHEV option cost.
I also suggest watching the Car Care Nut review on the CX-90
@@clarkkent9080wow the spam is laughable. I own a new cx-90 PHEV I'm getting up to 33 miles on EV and my gas is 5$ per gall or more for premium in Seattle.
@@Nitek09Z Some situations are better than others. I have chatted with people that have 0.11 per Kwh electric rates and $5.75 gasoline prices and it still takes 4 years to just break even on that $4,000 PHEV option.
The information I provide is for people considering a CX-90 PHEV. People that already own them have made that decision and you can't change that now.
The 25 miles of EV range is the typical range almost everyone on these channels have stated that they get. If you get 33 miles of EV range, I would assume that you get at least 33 mpg on gasoline so the calculation comes out the same with one electric charge saving no more than 1 gallon of gasoline.
The only people who tend to get mad, like you, are people who already own a CX-90 and once they learn these facts they are reevaluating that decision.
@@clarkkent9080 mad? Quite the opposite actually. Curious though, are you? Seems that way because you appear to strongly dislike the PHEV. What you don't realize is how convenient it is to plug in at home and rarely go to the gas station. I'm nearing 1000 miles and still on the original tank of gas from the dealership lol.
I have one in the states and it actually takes 8-10 hours on a standard outlet (unless Canada has more output) and 2hr is standard for the level 2 charger, not 1hr.
They cap it at like 7kWh charge rate, and you get about 14kWh and then there’s another 3 or so kWh buffer they don’t show you in the percentages. So 2hr to 2hr 20m.
Also the PHEV does have touchscreen but only if you have the largest 12” display, which in the states is the Premium Plus.
The reddit threads for transmissions issues are concerning maybe wait for the next model year. The teething issues need to be worked out.
These issues haven't been noted with the PHEV though. It has something to do with the mild hybrid system in the I-6
Not transmission issues
Am I the only one who thinks the backend is just bulbous and not very good looking? Really like the car but idk something about the way the trunk looks like it got overinflated is just off to me
Went to the Mazda dealership last Sunday because I really needed to see the CX90 in person. Now, this is very subjective, but I really do not like the bulbous D pillar. Wanted to overlook that styling but just couldn’t.
BMW in the back. Mazda in the front. Love that!
For work, I'd get the PHEV. For personal, I'd get the inline 6....
