  • Automotive Engineer David Chao loves the 2024 Mazda CX-90 so much that he is thinking of cancelling his order for the Toyota Grand Highlander - to buy the CX-90 instead. In fact, David gives 7 reasons why he feels that the CX-90 is a better 3-row SUV than the Grand Highlander, even though he initially really liked the Grand Highlander. This is a full review of the all-new, Japan-built Mazda CX-90.

As a Toyota loyalist, the only Mazda I ever owned were Rx7s during my younger years and now that I'm a family man with 3 young kids, I was looking at the 3-row Highlander as a replacement for our 2014 Sienna. After watching this video, I will now look at the CX90. Thanks David!

I also have been a Toyota loyalist for over 30 years and during the chip shortage and the car shortage at dealers. I made a decision to try Mazda! Yes I had a Mazda back in the 90s but I have not had one since then. What can I say why did I wait so long to buy a Mazda? There is very little to no road noise in my Mazda CX 9. All of my Toyotas had significant road noise. I have been very impressed with my two Mazda in the last three years. Now I am looking at the CX 90 PHEV! After watching tons of videos about this vehicle I placed my order today for one. Thank you Mazda for making such fantastic products!

The Mazda really lags the Toyota on practicality and might be hard pressed to replace a minivan. Much smaller third row and far less cargo room than the Grand Highlander. Behind the first row it has less than a Honda CRV, amazingly enough and behind the third row the Toyota Grand Highlander will have 50% more space (21 cubic feet to 14.9 cubic feet).

Love this video David! As someone who is ADHD and talks fast, I love your calm, soft pace. I wish I had that ability. 😂
Aside from that, I agree with everything you’ve said. I’m fortunate enough to have gotten a CX-90 (the exact spec in your video) as a 1 year loaner for me to make content with. I’m really leaning towards working out a way to purchase it after the yea is up. My wife loves it, my 1 year old fits great, it’s well insulated, drives well, and I honestly think it makes more power than advertised. Especially if you fill it up with 93 octane. This thing moves which is extremely refreshing in this class of vehicle. I’ve obviously driven crazier, faster, over cars but the quality & fun to price ratio is unmatched. As a reviewer I’m sure you can agree that we not only get excited over cars like the 911 GT3 RS, Escalade V, Raptor R, etc. but we get excited when a car does something extremely well and does it without asking for the moon & stars.

Mechanical engineer here whose last four sedans have been Mazda6s, maybe the most underrated vehicle sold. Thanks for a straightforward professional technical review that addresses significant factors I care about instead of the fluff and subjective personal opinions given by so many YT amateurs.
Just want to add that an inline 6 is also preferred because it is naturally balanced (as is the V8). V6s require complex, power sucking balance shafts and this inferior format only exists because it can fit into the small compartments allowed by minivans.
Mazda made the decision to take the IC engine to another level through innovation and they succeeded - My 2025 M6 with an 2.5L I4 engine has plenty of power and gets great fuel economy. Mazda didn't invent direct injection but they seem to have perfected it; I have not heard of carbon buildup issues like some more expensive German models suffer from. Mazda also stayed with the conventional automatic transmission instead of the two-clutch versions made by German automakers. They improved the shift times and in fact I barely notice the shifts.
Finally the steering, which if I didn't know was electric I would never have noticed anything different. Your comment about the motor being mounted directly on the rack improving feedback was a good one, but another advantage is it offers the best, most direct input to the rack.
    Keep up the good work!

    • @mattkeller5388
      @mattkeller5388 6 днів тому

Not a fan of the dual clutch either. Coming from a VW GTI - the two issues I had with it were intake carbonization (had to take care of this twice in 100k miles I had it), and the jerky awful transmission which was universally lauded when I bought it. With VW no longer offering the class leading semi-premium interiors they used to, I'm definitely looking harder at Mazda.

@@teedeekay9720 Went to look at the top trim CX90.. It drove great, looked great and the inline 6 turbo felt great. Compared to my 2020 Palisade(top trim).. it lacks a lot in space(trunk is small and don't even bother putting an adult in the third row its absolutely useless), usability(considering its size it feels cramped inside and not a lot of storage or storage space are small), luxury features and especially tech(infotainment on the CX90 feels very outdated even compared to my 2020 Palisade). It just didnt feel well thought out and put together inside.. hopefully the refresh will address most of this stuff. Lately, I am feeling the U.S. Operations of Toyota are failing to bring out well thought-out vehicles and their execution is below par. As an owner of Toyotas (all made in Japan) for many years, I have noticed all their Japan produced vehicles are executed better. Also, I agree with you...I would get the CX-90 in lieu of the Grand Highlander. As far as Toyota this year, I am sure Toyota will present a well-made Land Cruiser Prado in North America. We also have a 2016.5 CX-9 (it was a brand new mid model year introduction), almost 7 years and 80K miles and its been flawless with the exception of the wheel paint/coating peeling starting in year 6. Definitely upset over that but it won't stop me from buying another Mazda SUV. Best 'driving' SUV on the market and although looks are subjective, our current CX-9 still looks totally fresh today. I actually like the CX-9 exterior more than the new CX-90..., the 90 looks like the face got punched. Still a great looking vehicle but I do think the CX-9 was just perfect. Love that they went with the turbo I-6 and a rwd biased setup on the CX-90...that is the draw for me. My only dynamic complaint about the CX-9 is that you can still feel that front wheel drive bias and FWD torque steer under heavy throttle. Last thing to note is the price creep. Our fully loaded Signature at the time retailed for 44K and got for 42.5, a fully loaded CX-90 is going to be 50% more than that. So they have definitely moved up a several notches in price, though the engine and RWD biased platform may be worth it.

I have driven this CX90 on a rental for two weeks. It was super comfortable. Fuel economy was good yet it was still powerful. The outlook was luxurious. Everything was excellent except for the interior space. With the size of this vehicle, the room for middle row and 3rd row was below average. Cargo space also need improvement.
The driver and front passenger will love this car. But adults sitting at the back will probably prefer more legroom

I agreed with you about CX90. For the reasons, I actually sawed this vehicle displaying at Costco store. The quality materials made completely with highest grades, more refined & durable with the inline 6.
Secondly, the size of vehicle and tires, the lighting systems.
I always stayed away from Mazda for many decades largely because experienced of 1993 636es, etc.
Lastly, this vehicle manufactured in Japan by Japanese. It’s imported from Japan.

The handling of those two cars are way above the competition. When you execute a turn, it puts smile on my face, because the turn is so precise as if they are on rails, its akin to driving a Porsche I kid you not.
