Hi guys . Brody thanks for the info. Little story here . I owned both an echo 501 and a husqvarna 550xp for 5 years and used and i mean used to think the husqvarna had way more power but i always seemed to use the echo, jusr seemed to prefer it . Honestly the husqvarna from new as i bought it new has only 5 to 10 hours on it and the echo 100 to 200 hours on it . Recently i rebuilt a stihl 038 super which might i say is one of the toughest and best of stihls saws ever made . So i needed a tachometer to tune it when the Restoration was done . I put the echo on the tachometer just to be nosey and it was only hitting 11500 rpm out of a 13500 max . S i turned it up to around 12800 wow what a difference. That got me thinking so i removed the muffler restriction and again massive power increase. Last week i was using an 18inch bar and it was all in and dogged and it was not even phased the husqvarna if you look at it when it has an 18inch bar on it just gives up snd bogs . I now also own the echo cs4310sx which is the new 43cc pro saw not available in the usa and in my opinion the best 40cc class saw you can buy. It is just a mini 7310 same hd air filter and colour scheme but for a 43cc saw highly impressive. Last week i sod the 550xp and ordered a 621sx i can't wait . Echo saws are top quality and the reliability is through the roof . My 501 now would kill the 550xp and stihl 261 . Ther is even a bonus manual tuning as well
Just used my 501P to fell a decent sized maple in my yard, used every bit of the 20" bar. Was very impressed, first chainsaw I've ever owned/used and I wanted a pro grade saw to ensure it would last. Was the lightest and I also appreciated the simple controls. The other brands were unnecessarily complex to operate. Made in Japan too so you know its quality.
Japanese are great with small engines. If you remove the deflector and tube in exhaust you'll even be more impressed. Simple job too.. That saw will last you a long time.
Late to the party, but thanks for the review. Looking for a good saw to do seasonal firewood that’s got good power, lightweight, and robust design. It was between the 501p & ms261. Can’t get the plain 261 now, they’re all cm with electronics. Don’t need the extra headaches with that! 501p it is!
Been using AMSOIL SABER at 100:1 for 4 years and no issues and saws look brand new inside. My saws are 2-2511t's, 355t, 201tcm, 261cm, 362cm and my 661cm. I've even milled with my 661cm at 100:1 and it works fine.
A close friend of mine has dealt amsoil for over 20 years, he runs all of his yard equipment at 100:1 and has never had an issue. He told me it was tested by independent labs and didn't fail until 250:1
Thats so very hard to believe . Hot metal fast moving parts need lots of lubrication to live any length of time The problem is compounded in hot summertime
Could you help me out with something. I want to grease the needle bearing or rim bearing..instead of an e clip holding on the sprocket and clutch drum it's a nut ..do I have to lock the piston to get it off and is it a reverse thread
The red armour great for cleaning out carbs and carbon in 2 strokes for smoother running and faster starting . Its like a tune up in a bottle . I run the echo golden blend a lot cause of price then a couple of tanks red armour to make sure their cleaned out .
Thanks for the overview. I'm in the market to replace my trusty old Jonsered 590 and have been looking at the MS261CM and 550XP MK II. However I'm thinking one of these ticks more boxes for weight and long term reliability, while having all of the good points of the opposition and more. Your overview covers all of the little questions I had so really appreciated.
Does it have a floating rim clutch drum ? What bar mount is it ? Will it take a 009 mount bar or will it take a standard small Husky mount bar lit a 562 on down ?
@@Broddi169 hi there do you have to lock the piston to get to the needle bearing to grease it and also as it's not an e clip holding on the sprocket and instead it's a nut is it a reverse thread
I've heard a couple of people mention that the air filter doesn't do a good job of keeping fine dust particles out of the carburetor and that an o-ring needs to be added to prevent this; is that anything you've experienced with this model?
In regard to the Red Armor oil... 50:1 and 40:1 mix ratios. Which do you recommend and could you please explain the reason for your choice. The saws are a 620P, 501P and a Husqvarna 440e. Thanks!
@@AATreeService That's what I was curious about. I know higher ratios of oil yield more carbon deposits but in the same token the Red Armor oil also removes existing carbon deposits. I can totally see a reduction in power as the air/fuel mixture would be leaner.
The internals are the same. Not much difference between the two other than small ones like that handle. Power is the same. Echo is going to release a new 50cc.pro saw in the future.
I used Amsoil Professional at 50 to 1 in a Husqvarna 550 XP, no problems. When I mixed at 70 to 1 it was fine for a few days until I got in some big hardwood, then it seized up. I wouldn't suggest anything over the manufacturer's recommendation.
Husky autotunes run on the lean side for emission purposes and with the stratto charge it makes it worse. They run hot to begin with this way. No way to tune it out either. One of many reasons they don't last like old husky saws did.
Great review Brody. I bought a 501p back when they first came out. Just taking out the restriction tube in the muffler, triming the deflector, pulling the limiters and retuning really woke that saw up. I run mine at 40:1 with Red Armor. I couldn't be happier with this saw. Have you ever thought about doing a base gasket delete on it? I've heard that they have a big squish. It would probably help it even more.
So I use red armor too. The stuffs awesome. I found vp racing fuels offers a oil that looks to be very similar, and I’m going to try it out as well. Brody, know anything about it?
@@AATreeService I know red armor is awesome. I have a leaf blower that ran like crap, only thing I changed was to start red armor, and The blower ran amazing after about half a tank through it, and has ran great for the last 2 years now. The vp stuff I found is specifically for air cooled small engines tho, and the bottle is identical to the red armor, the color of oil and everything looks identical, and the words on the back of the bottle are saying the same stuff, but worded differently. I’d be interested in knowing who’s making echos oil, is it echo, or vp?
Brody I agree with you most of the time but on this Echo CS501P I just don’t see it. I have several saws as I work weekends in our tree service Echo(CS2511T, CS355T, CS501P and the CS620PW), Makita EA7900PRZ1, Husqvarna(550XP Mark II, 562XP, 572XP, 395XP and T540iXP). The Echo 501p doesn’t have close to the cutting power that my Husqvarna 550XP Mark II has. Now the Echo CS620PW on the other hand pulls with massive torque for a 60cc saw and is a great saw other than the filter which sucks as you know. The only good thing I will say about the 501p is it is light and reliable. I agree with you on Echo Red Armor as well as it is great oil and the only thing I run in all my 2 stroke equipment. I would love to try an Echo CS7310P as it looks great and has a great air filter. Thanks for making great videos.

Yea and you can drive with your feet too but that doesn't mean it's good idea. Giving your equipment more lubrication is always a good idea.

Should be a small hole on output shaft to stick a grease gun onto. That grease will hit the bearing.
