Been chasing my tail trying to figure why the hell my engine kept bogging on acceleration the point of shutting down. Runs perfect at idle. When I bought, I never noticed the heat risers were absent. It started and drove decently so I bought it and shipped it to Hawaii. I have replaced clutch, pistons, carb, distributor, alternator, fuel pump first to electric, now back to mechanical. I had heat risers from another manifold I'm no longer using and going to attempt to mate them to existing German dual port manifold. Icing at carb base happens even here in the tropics, I believe this has to be my issue, just dreading taking apart , AGAIN! I have to say I am so appreciative your channel exists along with many other helpful vw content creators!, Thanks Slade!
Thank you!!
Wish I had known this back in the day. Now I got to find one and clean it out thanks for showing this.
You’re very welcome! It definitely makes a huge improvement.
that thing was caked , another great how to vid 👍
Thank you Jason! I didn’t expect to blow all that crap in my face. 😁
Good tip. Your additional PICS along with
directions are always appreciated 👍
Thank you Gordon, I like to slip extra photos in once in a while because sometimes it’s hard to pause the video and get it to where you need to be.
So stoked to find this video. My 56's carb was condensing and I was scratching my head until I saw this. I am going to try it by removing the muffler.
Outstanding, I truly hope it helps out
@@SladesVWBeetle If it works I will be buying some merch!
@@SladesVWBeetle Its a 56 ragtop I inherited when my dad passed.
Slade!!! Your videos are SO knowledgeable!!! I mean, really informative!!! But the best part is your sense of humor with those little cuts you do!!!! They make me laugh so hard!!! You're an awesome teacher!!! God bless you and your family!!!
I’m sorry I didn’t see this message until now. Thank you very much for the very kind words, I just try to be casual. And hope to help others. God bless you and your family, my friend. I truly appreciate the kind of words.
I always look forward to your videos! It's a reminder of the joy of refurbishing old parts that is so often missed by just installing a newly purchased part.
Thank you John I truly appreciate that. I try to use as much original German parts as possible. They seem to honestly work the best.
Great video!
I did this a couple of weeks ago! It was plugged shut with sot... Amazing how much stuff that comes out of those heatrisers.
Now the carb/engine works a lot better! Great video! Congrats on the 3000 subs!
That is outstanding, I’m glad that you did this. A lot of people avoid it but it makes such a huge difference. And thank you so much for the kind words!
Good tip, at the right time.
I just startet to rebuild my engine and scratched my head how to do this job.😁
Thanks for the video.
You’re very welcome Andrea, and thank you for taking the time to comment it makes it worth doing these videos.
That was excellent thanks. I have this issue on my VW at the moment.
You’re very welcome! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, this will definitely make an improvement for you
Congrats on 3k subscribers!!! Always enjoy your videos. Have a great rest of your week...
Thank you Eugene. I truly appreciate that. And thank you so much for being here.
I like the cable cleaning idea. Mine blew out some pretty bad black sooty mess when I did it last year. The evaporust worked great on my rusted lug nuts. Really good information on the channel!
Thank you so much William, and thanks for always being here for me. I try to do the best I can and hopes that my videos will help others. The evapo rust works great.
Quite useful! Thanks!
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment Mark! Have a great day
Another great video Slades. Just now finished watching it. Definitely good tips and tricks here.
Thanks Blake! I appreciate that!!
That is amazing. Can't believe how much rusty "stuff" came out. Again, another great video and tip for all of us in VW land. Thank You!! ps congrats on 3k subs!!!!
Thanks very much Rich! It really helps keep it running proper. Thank you for the wonderful comment.
Another great topic and video!!!!
Thank you very much I truly appreciate that!
My carb is icing up at present, got an issue with the carburettor. Have to go and do this, thanks for posting. Really excellent video 😎👍
Thanks for taking out the time to comment Gordon, I truly appreciate that.

Awesome! Great to see you jumped from 3000 subscribers to over 9000 in just over a year 👍
Thank you I appreciate the kind words!
Great video! Thank you.

Congrats on 3,000 subs. This was a great video. I didn’t realize they could get so clogged. That would make a huge difference of how the car will run
Thank you!!! Yeah they really do clog up and cause problems!! Thanks for commenting!!
I can testify that this really is an important job, did it last summer and wow the crap that came out of there, it never seemed to stop🤣And the carb did go from ice cold to a toasty warm afterwards. thx for sharing a great method!
Yes it truly makes a huge improvement and will noticeably run so much better. Thanks for being here and commenting!!
Thanks great video
Thank you Douglas, and thank you so much for being here.
Great info and illustrations as usual. Happy for you hitting the 3K subscribers and sure enough you will hit 30K soon. Cheers from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺.
Thanks so much, I appreciate that!
My inlet manifold ices up externally just below where the carb mounts. Definitely need to give this a try. Thanks 👍🏻
Definitely give it a try Ben, it truly may help out. That’s exactly where it happens.
Great video. I haven’t had to clean one out before but now I know. Nice job.
Thank you, it definitely makes a huge difference on the temperature of the carburetor.
Wow i learn something today thank you
That’s great Daniel, I’m glad to hear that. I always hope these videos will help other folks.
nice job.
Thank you very much Jim!
Thanks you so much for this video! I'm so glad I found and subscribed to your channel.
I am new to my 64 and trying to learn. As the days get colder and wetter (west coast of Canada) the beetle was running rougher and stalling out. I was told it was icing. Just stop and let it melt and you are good to go but it's getting worse not better. I'm going to try this. Can't hurt (if I'm careful😜) thanks for the clear instructions
Thank you so much for being here Lisa, glad to have you aboard. Yes definitely clean out the heat risers. That’s what will cause icing of the carb! Very important!
I did this before. Was painting all my tins and changing gaskets. Someone told me about the carb build up so i had it all a part and said what the heck, might as well. So much carb build up came out. I didnt have any performance issues but im sure if i didnt do it i would have eventually.
It is so important to do this. And it makes a huge improvement on the carburetor being warmed up. I always hope these videos help other folks.
LOVE THE BUG!!!!
Nice job. 👍
Thank you very much I truly appreciate that!
Great video.
I just bought a new one due to not being able to feed the cable without it fraying. I didn't even think about the direction of the wire being wound.
It may have been clogged to the point of needing drilled out. Thanks for being here!
Great video! My mechanic did this to my intake for my 1971 beetle. He was not satisfied, so he got the tubes Hot with a torch rosebud and then shot oxygen in the tube. What a smoky mess! I had to have the tubes replaced because of leaks. Very important to have this clean running a single carb!
Yes, I have seen people use torches before. Unfortunately I don’t have any. But I’m glad he did that, your carburetor will definitely warm up properly.
Great demo. I was surprised to see that it was plugged. Great way to snake that out.
Thank you!!! Yeah most of them are really clogged!!
Great video, more Great instruction! Still just Kickin butt! Thank you again!
Thank you so much my friend, and thanks for always being here.
So that's how it's done, we used acid for declogging the drain for that, now I know, thanks for the video
You’re very welcome Gilbert, I truly hope these videos always help other folks.
And another great DIY video on a really important topic. I am cleaning my second single port intake manifold at y try is time using the drill-cable technique but afterward I will be using Evapo-Rust and let it sit for a few days to get rid of the rust as well as the carbon deposits. I figure using both methods could yield a more complete cleaning of the heater channel getting rid of both carbon deposits and the inevitable rust. Will let you know how it turns out. Keep up these excellent videos, highly instructive content. 👍
Thank you very much James and thank you for taking the time to comment. I always hope these videos will give other people some ideas and help them out. It is really good to get those cleaned out properly to get the heat that you need to the carburetor.
The other overlooked issue is cheap exhausts that have heater riser flanges but are pressure fed on both sides!
I was too chicken to use this method and just soaked the whole thing in Deox-C which is kinda the UK equivalent of evaporust.
Congrats on 3k subs, you've worked hard for it :)
Yes you’re absolutely right about the cheap exhaust. Soaking them can help too. And if you don’t want to use a drill, you can definitely hand feed a cable through there at least to get the loose stuff off. Thank you so much I truly appreciate the kind words.
way back in '82, first year i owned my 73, i was heading home from work on a humid summer afternoon and out in the middle of traffic while waiting for a light to change, engine choked up. towed it to dealer. they get to it next day and say nothing is wrong. (IDIOTS!) 39 years of educating myself and i know that i got nailed with intake manifold icing. my solution was dual weber ict 34 carbs! oh, and the compressor coming on brings on a grumpy cat appearance. heehee. look at all that rust and crap comin out of there. enjoyed the vid. i had been in the garage working on my zuki. heading to the lake now to try and catch a fish.
Oh I love the dual webers 34s!
That’s half the problem really damn fast. I have them on my 72 and that’s probably what I will have on the 68 to be honest with you. They warm up nicely, and wakes the motor up.
@@SladesVWBeetle i didn't have the right linkage when i was running my webers at first. got rid of it and went with the cb performance setup. so much better.
Oh I bet that’s a major difference. I had the hex linkage from aircooled...I wasn’t overly impressed with it but it worked OK.
@@SladesVWBeetle scat center pull? my original setup was center pull. cb's is much better. worth the money.
Great video I didn’t think you had to clean it out good to know that 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻take care and god bless 😁
Thank you Antonio, and I’m glad that you watch this I hope it helps. And God bless you also my friend! Thank you for saying that.
Thank you very much for the information I would never thought that was important Lahore that that pipe would get clogged up
You’re very welcome and thank you for being her Oscar, it is so vital to the car running properly.
Thanks for the very informative video its a job ime going to do ,.ive spent ages trying to fix the flat spot and bogging out on take up . it came to me when i noticed ice just below the carb . I could over come the flat spot by slacking off the jet next to the idle jet a touch but the engine overfueld on cruse not a good cure if you want to save your engine . great videos keep em coming a the best from the united kingdom
Thank you Paul!! I appreciate the kind comment! I always hope these videos help others out!!
thanks great you've done to share in this vedio that I've not seen to other vedio.
You DA MAN.
Thank you Willy, and thank you for taking the time to leave a comment.
Mine was so rock solid clogged I had to replace the intake. I bought the aftermarket version from jbugs. I'm in process of installing now. Not complicated, but requires some trimming, etc to fit it to engine. I found very little info on how to do it. I think you could make a great video on how to install it properly if you felt like it. Thanks for your vids!!
Informative video slade, I have twin carb set up, still watched though. Good stuff
Thank you Dave! I really like the dual carbs, wakes the motor up!
I had carburetor icing on a baja I used to have, mine was leaking at the gaskets, I doubled up the gaskets (used two on each riser) and it fixed my problem. Just another thing that can cause icing.
Thank you, and thank you for chiming in and giving extra tips and advice. I truly appreciate that. It all helps folks out.
I appreciate you making the video, I can't believe all the VW's I've had I never had a stopped up riser.I have a porsche 914-4 now, really enjoying it.I hope to have another bug, they aren't as cheap as they used to be!Thanks again
Whoa Slade I'm so impressed with your growth 👏 it almost feels like it's mines as well lol. I have one request can you please make a video about vapor lock and ways to prevent this from happening.
Heck yeah my bro!! I’ll do that for sure!!!
Just did this on mine. Heat riser was clear but whoever replaced exhaust never drilled out the holes! My god I can pull out onto the main drag now without having to worry about getting run over!!
Outstanding Martin!! It’s those little things that really make a huge difference. Thank you so much for being here.
I’ve used this method several times over the years and it works, but sometimes the carbon buildup is so severe that it can take hours of drilling to get it through. I like how you bend the end of the cable to get more action. I’ll try that next time.
It truly works well, and is such a huge improvement. Yes, sometimes they are truly plugged shut, and require actual drilling unfortunately. Thanks for being here
Be nice if it was an international giveaway. Great video again Slade 👍
Thank you Luke!! Honestly it will be global. Doesn’t matter where I have to ship! You’re all part of the community here. Thanks for being here!
Excellent video thanks for the information. Just be cautious of the that dust coming from the heater riser. Since all these engines are before the end of Leaded gas (January 1, 1996) you really don't want to breathe any of that dust.
Thank you so much I appreciate the kind words. And yes it kind of upset me after it happened. I seldom can wear a mask when I’m filming. And a bunch of it definitely went in my mouth. Kind of made me nervous.
Congratulations on reaching 3,000 subscribers!! Another great video; I was amazed the tube was completely clogged. I wonder how many repairs are done before someone recognizes this as the problem? Regarding the dust, perhaps you could place a paper bag (or something) over the opposite end of the tube to catch the dust as you blow it out???
Thank you so much I truly appreciate it I am so pleased that everyone is subscribing to watching the videos. The tube was completely clogged, I couldn’t wear a mask or no one would hear me talking. Unfortunately I eat a lot of dust which makes me nervous.
This is my new channel I'll be showing off my bug today. I'm hyper bipolar
Awesome!!! That’s great news!!
Great job 👍🏻 information with demonstration, removes Complications. 😂😆😆😆😆😆💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💯👍🏻
Thank you Hunter! I hope you enjoyed the video. Especially my stupidity with blowing stuff into my face 😂😂
It's the latent heat of vaporization. This is exactly how your AC works, too. You are taking a liquid and vaporizing it... or at least emulsifying it.
In the case of some carbs you need heat from somewhere else to combat the cooling effect.
Hello brother, cool tips. I used to use a small plumber snake I found at a garage sale...lol... it was broken; so I repurposed it.
I just realized that you have a total new website. So this is not the one I sent you Sunny’s picture. I will be contacting you soon. I am going to wait a little until I can get a good picture. Almost done. Just had a stepped back with the carpet kit. I will explain later. Take care brother.
Thanks brother!! Yes I did a new website, feel free to send me pics and a bio! Would be happy to put Sunny up!!
The heat is for the manifold, not the carburettor. It helps to vaporize the fuel instead of condensing and freezing. Water cooled manifolds are the same, heated. If you live in Phoenix you know that you will get boiling fuel, flooding etc if carb gets hot.
On my baja the engine hangs out in the open so you dont even have a warm engine compartment. In winter I had to wrap the manifold below the carb with heat tape and digital controller and definitely need hot air air cleaner. The cable method probably wont work if it is completely plugged.
Again a great video slade, to late for mine. It was so badly stuck that I had to buy a new one. Nice trick for the future.
I’m sorry to hear that, it’s so nice to save the original German parts one possible. Thank you so much for being here.
@@SladesVWBeetle I both a Nos one and so it stays original, me 😃
Wow, stay safe from that rust cloud!!
Absolutely, I wasn’t ready for that one. LOL
what if my heat riser tubes came out? do they have seals inside the manifold i have to replace or something?
I never would have imagined that getting clogged up, crazy!!
Yes, they truly do get clogged over the years. It’s amazing how this little thing like the car runs so much better.
Great vid. I have a question I've got carb icing and I'm going to do this tomorrow. Would this possibly be why my engine will only do 40 mph. Would it effect the engine that much? Thanks
Hello, Slade. I have also heard of owners who fray the end of the cable a little, and this scrubs the sides, kind of like a wire-brush wheel.
Hey my friend have you been? Yes they were unwind a little bit it was probably hard to tell in the video. I try to be careful in what I advise people to do. LOL
i used the wire and it worked!!!!!!!! My question is how do i pry the copper single port intake manifold gasket out of the head. Do i use something like a dental tool to grab it. Its stuck in there. I dont want to gouge the head.
I also already bought a new one for my 66 beetle before seeing your video. The old one was poorly welded on one of the riser tube and leaked besides being clogged. The fuel portion had a number of pin holes. Probably the original manifold. A little off topic but it was a bear to get the new one to fit. I was finally able to get the intake to connect to the cylinder heads. But, both heat riser tubes screw holes are off by half the distance of the hole diameter(3/16-1/4"). I was told by the dealer to give it a try bending the tubes. Not so easy. Sort of a afraid that I might crack something using force. Have you ever run into this sort of problem? If I try bending the intake off the engine that will probably mean lot of installs/removals trial and errors. Advice?
👍😊
Thank you sir!!
Great video!!!! Can't wait for the giveaway!!!! (Prehaps a Slade Beetle gasmask) lol :) I want to see the 68 beetle run badly. I have found out that my frame head is rusted out on my 1974 Super Beetle unforunately. Ugh! more frame parts from Wolfsburg west once i get the frame off the body...... I am taking pictures and front drum brakes was home to spiders as well lol....
Thank you so much I appreciate that. I have to figure out how to do this giveaway, like a raffle style thing I’m still puzzled on how to do it online. A frame head is not fun, but take your time and make sure it is lined up properly before you weld it. But I’m sure you already know that.
My bug has been my daily driver for 15 years, only approx 4,000 miles per year and I have had to do this horrible job twice but with some carb icing signs now it looks like a third time is coming up, I might just buy a new manifold as I hate doing this so bad!
I soak the manifold overnight with diesel/kerosene before I do the wire/cable thang.
if one does not have an extra cable / clutch cable lying around, what else can be used to achieve the same result?
Pretty much any type of cable, it’s just convenient to use it if you have it on hand.
I would check a hardware store they usually have many similar items on hand.
@@SladesVWBeetle - alright, thank you
Thank´s for the tip. Some people who live in warm weathers remove that pieces of the intake and the carburator run nice. What do you know about that?
I’m sure If they’re in a very warm climate, it might be OK. They are definitely on there to keep that carburetor warm.
@@SladesVWBeetle warm or hot with low humidity is ok. humidity no matter the temperature can cause icing.
Yes sir absolutely right!
Removing it would harm gas mileage, due to poor vaporization of fuel. Carb might need to be rich to get it to run ok. Excess fuel would dilute the oil. Liquid fuel doesn’t burn well. Engine life would be shorter. Dual carbs don’t need it but with central carbs it’s a must.
i know this is an old vid but can this cause my car not even start? ive been having missfires on my 69, thought it was my distributor, got a new one ,changed sparkplugs and cables that run too them. need some info regarding this
I know it’s been sever months since you commented this, have you checked on this? I’m beginning to think I might need to do this my self. I’ve also got a new distributor, cables and sparks. And still won’t start
Hahaha yep makes sense...I had a brand new chinese 34 pict sngle carb on my buggy at first...it ran like crap, soot, dead spot, the carb was cold, dripping condensation excessively, and probably internally freezing...I just put on some duals and forgot about it...later, I had my intake with the risers stored, went to move it and it dropped and fell on the floor....all this crap came out of it 😬😬😵...that was totally why it performed so poorly. When I get a chance, I will re-use it on another project, after proper cleaning...
It truly helps brother!! Honestly the duals run so much better anyhow. And a cleaner looking engine compartment! Don’t toss your original intake though, they’re superior to the aftermarket!
@@SladesVWBeetle yes, thank you, i have a some original stock single and dual port intake manifolds, and some single.lort heads as well.., I will definitely hold on to them
Great job! I couldn’t breath all that carbon buildup. 🤣😷
Thanks!! I should have had my mask in for sure!
This might explain how after I tuned my carb with a tach it still smells slightly like unburnt fuel. I'll have to do this, I always thought it was kinda odd how cold my carb would be. Only carbureted vehicle I've ever had and I just thought it was a carb thing.
Yes, definitely check into it. If your carburetor is cold to the touch after it supposedly should be warmed up. Make sure to do this, and you will be surprised at the difference. Thank you for watching and being here.
@@SladesVWBeetle Thanks for all the info you put out. Really helps us younger folks.
I almost pulled the trigger on front end parts for my Super after watching your video when I remembered "oh yeah, mine are pressed in ball joints" and I don't have the means to do that work.
Still, videos like these give me confidence to do the work rather than letting it sit or paying too much for what is a fairly simple job.
I’m glad they’re helping, I truly mean that. That’s why I’m doing a DIY channel so others don’t have to pay people to do their work. You could get a press site from probably Harbor freight. To do yours.
@@SladesVWBeetle That might be something I pay for, from struts to ball joins, the whole front end needs redone. Every bushing is torn and hard and the car pulls hard to the right if I let go of the wheel. It's really nice I have no shimmy though.
I'm fairly close to several aircooled shops who worked on the car before and they do good work for not a whole lot of money. I'm lucky enough to be a younger person with a good paying job too, so I can afford some external work occasionally.
Still, the confidence videos like these inspire does make me almost want to tackle stuff like engine dropping to replace the rear main seal and oil cooler seals that I know are bad.
the name of my new channel which I'll be showing off my bug today is called Beetle guy 35
Outstanding!!!!!!

Great tutorial. Like you mention must have some sort of respiratory protection. Take it from someone who never thought much of it, and now suffering lung fibrosis. So if it’s going airborne you don’t want to breathe it. If you smell it, you’ve already inhaled it. But great demo! .(0\_!_/0).
Thank you very much! I am truly sorry to hear that you are suffering from that. Normally I do wear protection, the problem I’m running into is when I’m filming people can’t hear me.
I think from now on I’m going to wear one, and just speak after I remove it. Thank you for caring.
Kinda like Roto-Rooter your pipes
Right?!?!? 😂😂 That’s very true my friend!
I've got a dual port and the heat risers don't connect like that
That’s odd! Did somebody alter it?
No, the manifold is new and it's not through connected like that; neither were the other ones I've had
thanks for the education, 50+ years of debris removed in a few short hours. but definitely should wear breathing protection our lungs aren't getting any younger.
Thank you Bradley! Yes I should have, I wasn’t using my brains. Thank you for being here.
Hey brotha, I cleaned the heat riser thoroughly but I'm still having issues. I'm running a 1600 Single port with a 28 pict 1 carb. Gaskets are in and bolted down but she idles rough. After awhile ice still forms right under the carb. Any tips?
WTH?? That’s really weird. Are you sure the cable went through and came out the other end brother? And did you bend the cable slightly so it did a sweeping motion? I hope that made sense.
@@SladesVWBeetle Yes sir, I did every bit to make sure she was clean and she also came out the other end of the heat riser. Theres a couple other issues I have to address but I think I know what the problem is. I still haven't gotten the car to full temp so it may change my results. 🤙🏻
