    once on a dirt road deep in Mexico, my distributor cap broke in half! I taped it back together with electrical tape and made it all the way back to Fresno, CA.!

      @@SladesVWBeetle I realized on that same trip I'd forgotten a spare generator/fan belt and actually found a VW repair shop two hours south of the border. His English was minimal and my Spanish was just as bad, so finally I took him out and pointed at the belt, and he said "Oh, el bando". I thought, of course!

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 роки тому

      Haha!! That’s too funny!! Truthfully a belt is probably the most important thing. And as I was talking about that in a video, that’s the only thing I didn’t have on me when I was young. Of course I was stupid enough to keep driving at 16 years old. 🤷🏻‍♂️🙄😂

    Yes the clutch cable is perfect because that came in handy twice over the years👍...but I also carry a spare fuel pump with the matching rod that goes on the bottom...that helped me out already just a couple of years ago....I have one in my bug and bus.

    For long road trips, I agree with all the stuff you mentioned. Within twenty miles of home, I only take my original VW tool kit, including the spare fan belt, a small flashlight, and my scissor jack, of course.
    Some people think were a little paranoid when taking a lot of stuff for long trips; but this isn’t 1969, when there was a VW dealer, or VW Shop in every town. So many parts are simply too hard to come by.
    Having said that, and although I rarely take long trips-since Covid, anyway-I thoroughly inspect my Bug before going on a road trip-even one thats only fifty or so miles away. Because of this habit, I’ve only been stranded once-a mile from home, fortunately. My accelerator broke, right near the pedal. I walked home, got a few electrical connectors, pinched the accelerator cable where it broke, and made it home, where I had a spare cable, but preferred to install it in my garage, rather than on the street. The ironic thing was that the day before, the wife and I had driven to Sacramento to a VW car show, which was a three hundred mile round trip. On the way back home, it was 101 degrees outside. Thank god I didn’t have the cable snap on the way back home.
    Good inspection and maintenance habits don’t always win the day, but I got lucky on that road trip. So, in nine years, I’ve only had one debilitating incident. Not too shabby for an old car.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 роки тому

      Wow, you are right. Thankfully that accelerator cable did not break while you were that far. Good inspection and maintenance go along way. I do agree.
      Oddly enough many people don’t do that. And then they complain when something goes wrong. I like to be prepared.
      Although I must admit, I should practice what I preach..
      they sure don’t make parts the way they used to when we were younger. And you’re right my friend, years ago you could stop at any parts store, or any of VW shop in the 70s, and get a part if you were broke down.
      Now that’s all gone away. Or at least where I live!

    My electric distributor went out last week stranding me on the side of a road but luckily I had a older distributor that was already timed and I just swapped and kept going - checked timing at home and it was spot on! Very important part to carry especially bc most people assume that itll be the points closing or the coil going out not to many expect the distributor to have failed

    Ed beat me on the AAA card. But when I was young with my first bug there was no cell phones just other folks driving by and if lucky someone would stop. They would take me to the local auto parts store. There my VW tool and spare parts collection started. By the time my dad told me to get rid of all my cars off his yard I had enough to rebuild the engines. I still have quite the collection. Now I just have a small Tackle box of tools in my Chevy truck and my AAA card😁👍

    I've had my electronic igniter die, so condenser and points along with a small screw driver and feeler gauge are a must. I've taken my bus on 2k mile trips several times and never once had to get a tow. However, I have been 20 miles from home and needed a tow. The ignition lock broke and I couldn't turn the key. The other time I had to get a tow was for a fuel pump that took a dump. Great list of essentials. I also carry a gallon of gas, as my gas gauge is on my list of things to repair.

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  3 роки тому

      Oddly enough, I can understand exactly what you meant. It seems like years ago when I broke down it was closer to home. Then I could be six hours from home and never had a problem. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I still believe the parts they make today, they’re not quite as good as they were years ago. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment.

    I learned a long time ago in high school with my 69 ghia "Don't forget some gloves (l like rubber surgical type gloves) and some sort of coverall's ( I get the disposable painter type), and possibly a surgical style hair cap" (I have long hair so I don't need my hair in the muck you know? lol). b/c the last thing you want is to be down in the dirt, oil, and greese on the side of the road broke down on your way to say a show or a restaurant and get all nasty. You might look/feel a little awkward but you'll be glad you have them when your done with your repairs and you just take the garb off and are back on your way. oh also some old walmart bags to put your greesy parts and the gloves cap and coveralls in till they can be disposed of or cleaned and repaired/rebuilt. I just found your channel and subscribed keep it up. :)

    I carry a Fluke meter (with the battery removed), spare fuses, a Fiat tool kit (which is the same as a Bug tool kit), feeler gauges, spare tappets, spare belt, 1/4 and 3/8th socket sets and ratchets, and my timing lamp. And hose clamps. And diagonal cutters, and needle-noses. And spare fuel line. And of course a jack and nut buster. And a small electric tire pump that's been modified with alligator clips to go directly on the battery, or alternator hot.
    It sounds like a lot, but most of it fits in an 18 inch Mason's bag... everything but the tire pump and jack.

    I need to get me a T or one of you're hoodies.
    The only things I saw that I carry but you did not list was duct tape and zip ties.
    Years ago when working on Beetles was a source of income for me I received a 1AM call for help. One of my college student customers had lost a ball joint on a country road. I went out to see what we could do and using both his scissor jack and my scissor jack I was able to get the ball joint back into position and in the socket. I then had a brain fart to use a roll of duct tape to hold the ball joint together so we could get his car back to his house. a few days went by and I had not received a call to change the ball joint and I called him asking when were we going to change out that ball joint. his reply was that he was not in any hurry because the duct tape was holding and he was going to continue driving it. Wow!! That’s the last time I make fun of people for using duct tape. 😂
      Zip ties, that’s another one I forgot. During filming, my brain went completely blank. I should’ve made a list up before filming.
      A lot of stuff can get you out of a bad incident real fast.
      I’ll be putting my store back up on my website. I’m switching vendors right now. I’m not sure if you seen the website.
      Although I have stuff to still add to it. Give a yell some time I hope that you’re doing well.

    I have triple A I will, def load all these tools into the trunk. I do have a hat, gloves, raincoat, hiking shoes, towel, dog raincoat since we are in Seattle, I have the air compressor but had to cut the end off and now hook the wires to the battery, I lost my 71 SB Yukon Gold white interior 23 thousand miles on my 18th B-day to an engine fire, my Father a Lt. For Seattle FD could not get the fire out he was going to get gas for my Birthday to drive the bug to dinner that was 8-30-1989. I was mortified- I have my fire extinguisher now. Check your hoses make certain they are new leading to the fuel filter. Also I have a head lamp and a flashlight.

      I’m so sorry that happened to you! That’s horrible!! I did a video on that fuel filter relocation bracket, it does help get some connections out of the engine bay. Absolutely carry an extinguisher for sure! Thank you for being here! And commenting!

      @@SladesVWBeetle Yeah I have heard of that and will look at your video and see if I can do it. Thank you! The engine is super clean and I check before I drive every time and make sure the hoses are on good. I am running mid grade Chevron gas it, right now which I run in my 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport and I ran super in my 89 Cabriolet, do you have any exceptions to me using a mid grade, for some odd reason my cars do better. Also: do use an oil additives or anything, I have to use Lucas Fuel Injector cleaner in my Jeep and Oil Stabilizer other wise it gets the pings and wont kick over as fast, just wondering for a Beetle? Thank you!

      @@christiegroves Honestly you may find a sticker on the inside of your gas lid door. It will say, 91Ron if the sticker is still there. It the USA that equals to 87 octane.
      Your good with regular unleaded unless you up the compression as in high performance.
      I had a Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0….loved that motor!
      Anyhow I had to run 89 in it. It didn’t like that 87 for some reason. 🤷🏻‍♂️
      These beetles are tough cars. With maintenance they can last forever!
      Here’s the link to my fuel filter bracket video. It’s not bad to do. If you look there’s another video too on my channel here. I did one for a friend.
      I only used a additive for the old solid lifters. You can buy a zinc additive. Or, and oil with high zinc content.

    How bout' fuses. Don't know if they are special for a bug or not. We just bought another one, 72 Super. I was laying upside down under the steering column,(getting to old for that), because I had to put a new ignition switch in. I saw the fuse block there and wondered if maybe I need to buy some to have on hand. LOL
