In 1980 my first car was a 1968 beetle. I could go to any of the 25 or so wreck yards here in Central Florida and there would be hundreds of air cooled vw's. Glad I spent a small fortune back then on spare parts.

Mine is from Jbugs and a Dasparts 20220909. No instructions. I adapted generator to Alternator. So there is an adapter to raise it up so the alternator does not abstruct the accelerator pump. So, you need the longer studs to allow for the raising of the carburetor. Only if you have adapted from generator to Alternator. This video very helpful.

Love your videos. Very clear information for newbies and old guys like me who haven't touch a VW carb in 30 years. Man seeing your cold breath out in your garage is making my want to stoke up the fire here. I think you turn it off out there due to the fan noise while shooting your videos. Get one of those Costco fan looking heaters. No noise at all and will heat up your garage.

    Great video!
I have recently scored two original German 34 PICT 3 carbs. One needs a good rebuild and clean, the other needs a few extra parts. I haven't tried the EMPI. Here is Australia, everything is expensive and "rare". So having these two carburettors is a great score.
Sadly, my beetle progress has stalled due to a few reasons. I need a flat driveway to safely jack up the bug and fit new CV. I have a brand new set sitting in the box waiting for me to find a space to do it safely. My driveway is hilly.
I've also been slow to keep progress going and turning it into my daily because COVID has killed my industry. My income has reduced 95%. So I'm making just enough to pay rent, buy some groceries. I'm thinking of a career change and getting an apprenticeship as a welder/fabricator.
Appreciate your videos mate. They have kept me entertained while I've been suffering financially and mentally. The new GoPro is brilliant. So much clearer. I have to do the same on my channel once I start earning some more money again. I don't have any patreons or support, so it'll just have to wait until I get an income again.

Yes please be careful working on a hill!! That’s a bad ideas for sure!!
This Covid wipes out my wife’s business and we have taken a hard hit on income! This gas hurt so many people. I’m so tired of the crap.
I truly hope things look up for you! Thanks so much for being here! Cheers!!

@@SladesVWBeetle 100% will hold on to it. I’m on the hunt for a nice rebuildable Fuel Pump too. I’ll find one someday. These new ones seem to build too much pressure.
Yeah, always careful on my driveway. No jacking the car up. Which makes the next few steps impossible, but I’m working on finding a space nice, flat and dry to work on. Gotta get these CVs in, probably do the wheel bearings while I’m at it. And then front suspension bushings. Get a wheel alignment done and my daily will be back on the road full time.
I just had some stickers designed and getting for it this week, as I made an Instagram page for it and it shot up in followers already.

I toss the electric choke. I installed a hand cable choke on the rear seat heat diverter lever. My beetle gets plenty hot from just the forward (driver and shotgun) foot outlets. I even have the windscreen/dash heater outlets blocked off.
Really I don't need the choke at all. It's just a hand accelerator, so to speak. One of these days I will remove the choke plate and just let it be an accelerator advance (a poor man's cruise control). I live in southern MO, so we don't need a choke.
I just reread that and realized I might be a bit tight on white lightning... but I stand by all that.

    Struggling with hesitation and idle.
    Bad has gotten worse.
Went through a lot of trouble shooting.
I have changed fuel pump (seems for no reason).
Changed my carburetor (my stock one was constantly leaking - but may be fine).
    Checked plugs - seem ok.
    Changed wires.
    Learned a lot so far.
Checking fuel pressure next (rumors of over producing?).
Just about to attempt timing adjustment.
Wondering - I have a tube that comes out of the left side of the deck plate and goes to a small pot mounted to manifold with a lil nipple on it - What is it???? oil breather / cooler? Cant seem to attach photo?

Great video series! I was able to take the top off my Solex carb and inspect the main jet thanks to you! I got my 67 beetle running now but it needs an oil change and I want to service the oil bath air cleaner. I noticed when I put the air cleaner on while the engine is running the idle speed drops. I had an afterthought that maybe the air spout vent was in the wrong position? I was looking to see if you have a video on servicing the oil bath air cleaner and I could not find one. I’ve watched other videos and they all clean out the bottom of the oil reservoir and of course refill with fresh oil. What can I do for the filter element as far as cleaning that or is that not really critical? Also, I know there’s aftermarket air cleaners such as the EMPI high profile high flow air cleaner but I favor keeping things original unless you strongly recommend going after market for an air cleaner. his Slades, thank you so much for this video. i just got my empi 34 -3. thanks for the tip on pulling it apart and cleaning before mounting. can i ask you a couple of questions?
    1) - i got it for my Imp snowcat which has and industrial ford v4 (same motors that came in old Saabs), my snowcat guru swears this carb works really well on these engines. he's out of town so i can't ask him this...you have mentioned that the jets etc. depend on where you're running them (i assume altitude etc). i''ll be running at fairly high altitude (2500 to 7000 feet) and because it's a snowcat, it'll be cold:))) like you said, my Empi came with 2 options, what jets & mixture screws should i go with? also...it's really hard for me to get NON ethanol so it'll be mostly the ethanol crap.
    2) how do you recommend that i hook wire up the electric choke? i've googled and i get a lot of different answers. the carb i'm replacing is mechanical choke, would i splice into that one wire that comes off the alternator (is it stator wire, or hot wire, it's got a weird name but i can't remember). i've also read hooking a wire up to key post but something about just when it's on, not when cranking?
i'm really sorry for the newbie questions, i hope that i'm not bothering you with these. and anyone else that wouldn't mind giving me advice i'd really appreciate too. i really really hope that i got an EMPI that actually works - i'm sorry yours didn't. thanks everyone:)))-barbie

I'm interested to know how it ran after you got it installed. Also, which distributor are you using? I have the same EMPI carb and have not had any luck getting it run well. I had it on my beetle with a vacuum advance distributor and then on my Bus with a 009. It will idle just fine but has a flat spot and hesitation in the throttle. It always acts as if it is starving for gas.

Does the idle jet have any effect on other portions of the carburetor? The reason I'm asking is that I had been running a 65 idle jet. It ran pretty good for the most part but the idle would take a second to drop once I let off the gas. It ran ok on the highway and seemed to run good in town otherwise. But the day before yesterday I decided to try a 55 and oh man what a difference. I've gained a lot more power on top end and the idle settles down immediately and the idle is rock steady. My trike went from 65 at full throttle to me having to back out of it at 80 mph last night out on the highway. It seemed like the mixture and bypass screw also required much less messing with past the initial setting. Any thoughts?

Wow!! I never got all those advantages from an idle jet change. It’s great news, but kinda is odd. Most run a 55, and some run a 60, if they’re too lean from this ethanol crap. But usually the idle jet works up to 2000 rpm I believe

    • @SladesVWBeetle
      @SladesVWBeetle  2 місяці тому

Thanks for being here, Steve I appreciate it. I have always liked the thermostat, and the flaps intact and Here’s why.
It can cause premature wear of the cylinders from not warming up properly. As in, the cylinders warming up to a temperature, they should be instead of being cold, and wear….
Now that being said, it’s almost like an oil debate. Some people don’t run them at all, and have claimed to have never had premature wear.
Which I don’t know how they can calculate that.
If it’s just a grocery getter, and running around, and not a daily driver than I would not worry about it as much. As long as the flaps are not in there at all, you will be fine then.
