Nothing like being a teacher, piece by piece!! Thanks for a great carb video!!
@@dennismcpeek9630 thanks very much. I truly appreciate the kind comment my friend.
Got my dad's 74' up and going thanks to your rebuild video, you and the duckman are priceless
Thank you James I truly appreciate that.
Great video!!! My girlfriend has a 73 super beetle. I'm somewhat handy and it's been running terrible. I cleaned the plugs and checked the points. She's a snowbird and left the bug garaged in Northeastern NY for months at a time so i figured the jets in the carb were blocked. I watched your video a few times and ordered the rebuild kit. I did not use the chem dip but used carb cleaner instead and sprayed the heck out of it. Put it back together and is running so much better. The idle is a little high so I'll have to play with that another time. Thank you for your help!!!
Thank you Joey, especially for taking out the time to leave a comment. I’m glad it worked out for you nicely.
I watched yours and other's videos on the PICT 3, only after soaking my carb for 48 hours in that soak, oops. But so far so good. I'm going to finish assembling it tonight and then finish the top end of my '73 Thing. I took apart my carb so far that I even took off the butterflys. The whole car can fit in there, the main body flat on its side, the top sideways along the side of the can, then all the smalls in the basket on top of it.
Thank you! Didn’t know how to get that sneaky little mini ball bearing out before. 😃👍
You’re very welcome! Thanks for taking the time to watch the video I hope it was very helpful.
Good video! “Needs cleaned”? ...TO BE... needs TO BE cleaned. Thanks for the info!
Thanks Trev! I appreciate it!
Very in depth demo on the carb. Thanks!
Thanks William!! I truly appreciate it!!
great video , getting it done in the cold too 👍
Thank you!! Hope you’ve been doing well!
Very good rebuild of the carb, like new again.
Thank you very much!
Well done nice how to video. Always enjoy watching. You explain things so well.
Thank you very much! I truly appreciate that.
Love the video on the solex carburetor very detailed work. By the way they offer a 5 gallon chem dip just a little pricey but well worth every penny when your working on your beloved vw's. Thanks Slade's Vw Beetle!!
Thanks very much I appreciate that! I didn’t know they made a larger one like that. It was a little tricky getting that inside the 1 gallon bucket. I’m gonna testing other products to though. I’m actually going to start doing that over the spring. Thanks for being here.
Looks like I’m going to try my first carb rebuild thanks to you and your very helpful video. I’ll keep you posted.
Awesome video Slade ,these how to videos are great.
Thanks so much brother! I truly appreciate that. I’m always hopeful that they will help others.
Way kool!!! Now I'm ready to tackle my carb!!! Thanks!!
Excellent!! They’re really not bad!
Great video. Carb came out very good can't wait to hear it run. Stay safe out there...
Thanks Eugene! Gotta replace the fuel line next!
ANOTHER informative video from a TALENTED handyman, can’t wait to hear the engine running with it. GOOG JOB my friend , Cheers from Melbourne 🇦🇺
Thank you very much, I appreciate the kind words! Thanks adding for being here!
Slades that is some job. I am glad you’re doing first... next I need to get mine done; I know who M going to call...😀... that is a very tedious job... great video.
Thanks Junior! I hope you have been doing well. I have to do the fuel line inside the tunnel next. I’m really not looking forward to it. 😁
Nice job on the carb. That chem dip seems good. Well done !
Thanks very much! I truly appreciate that. It work very well. Although there are other things we can use. I thought I would give it a try. Thanks again for being here.
As far as the Chem dip I use it mainly on old carbs that haven't been touched in years. My carbs that I clean more often I just use carb clean. Chem dip really cleans the carb bodies like new. If your going to be cleaning allot of carbs and metal parts in the future the larger ultasonic cleaner is great so you can clean more parts at the same time. You can also use your own mix of solutions that you like in it as well. I'm just a part timer on this stuff so carb clean and Chem dip now and then works for me
I actually was going to purchase an ultrasonic cleaner. My buddy has one, and offered to let me use it. But I really don’t like boring stuff like that, my luck it would break. I have about five carburetors here that I’ve been sitting for a very long time. So I figure the chem dip will come in handy to soak them all.
What a great instructional video! Thank you for taking the time.
Great deets on carb!! Awesome!! When i got that ChemDip... i left mine for 4-6 months.... then dropped the carb in hot boiling water. I should not have done that. It did not look good lol
Oh yeah, I’m sure that carburetor came out much different. 😁 Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Fantastic info and video dude! Keep em coming!
Thank you Jimbo!
@@SladesVWBeetle Thank you my man! I know you're having fuel issues but looking forward to how you get these dialed in too!
Thanks Jimbo! I have to replace the fuel line, but it’s okay. Now the system will be new from the tank to the carb. Just slowed me down. 😁 Thanks for being here, I truly appreciate it!
Thanks for putting out this video for us. I'm new to VWs and trying to learn as much possible. Going to rebuild a 34 pict-3 and a 30/31 when swapped out. Thanks again.
And thank you for taking the time to leave a comment!
@@SladesVWBeetle just rebuilt my 34 pict-3. The kit I used didn't have one of the internal springs so I re used the old one. My old springs appeared to be in good shape. It appears to have not been used much before the previous owner put a bigger engine in his bug so it's been sitting in a box for 25 years. Do you think there could be a issue with the old springs? I used your video for a reference on the rebuild to make sure I didn't miss anything. Thanks again.
Another great video Slades. That Chemdip is the stuff. I’ve used it for years. Can’t think of the last time I rebuilt a carb though lol 😂 I never have luck with the rebuilt ones I always just buy new. Luckily mine came with a new one that hasn’t been installed yet. It seems like you have had that tube of dielectric grease for years 😂 the stuff lasts forever I swear. I’ve got a can of it with the nozzle and I squeeze it out.
Hey Blake! I wished I could buy a new Solex, but all the new ones are aftermarket now. And some do have luck with them too! I have had that grease for a while. 😁 I’m not sure how, because I use it a lot. 😀
@@SladesVWBeetle LOL. Yeah I know I’ve got a couple jars of anti seize that are who knows how old lol 😂 and I use it a lot. The one the previous owner provided and bought is an EMPI I have heard mixed things on them so not sure how well it will do. 😁
nicely done sir!
Thank you so much I truly appreciate that!
Excellent video. Thank you for posting!
Thank you very much, and thank you for being here!
Great job 👍🏻 Super Detailed instructions 💪🏼💯 by the way Chem dip has a 3 or 5 gal. with a bigger basket. It's a must have for larger Carbs. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💯💯💯💯💯
Thank you Leonard! I truly appreciate that! Yes I found out after I already bought the 1 gallon that they had larger ones. Next time around I’m doing that.
If you ever get the time I would like to see how to put new bushes in for the butterfly shafts.
Good vidio, deffenatly one to save.
That’s actually in my agenda! I have four carbs laying here. And I have a nice one for except the throttle shaft bushings. So that’ll be coming up!
This video gave me the encouragement to go deeper and change some parts that i had sitting around in the new kit but was afraid to go deeper to open up carb. One problem I ran into: I could not get that brass screw out to access that ball bearing. I screwed in the rear light’s screw but its really stuck tight, so i gave up 🤷🏻♂️
OK you need to get that out.
That’s usually gummed up. Screw the screw into the brass part.
Clamp some vice grips on to the screw.
Turn the carburetor upside down and smack the vice grips with a hammer and it will pull out!!
@@SladesVWBeetle 10-4! Will try that and see if it works. Is this part really important? I mean does it really help with performance of carb if cleaned up? Thx again
@@SladesVWBeetle Just did it!! “Great Success!!” ;) not possible without ur advice! Thx again (there was a lot of dirt in there)
i was thinking that you could blow bubbles into the chem dip bucket with a small aquarium air pump to provide a bit of current while parts are soaking. good vid! i could see your breath at one point. just got to the end. 37 degrees.
Hey Scotty! That’s actually a good idea, I never thought about doing that before. I want an ultrasonic cleaner really bad, I believe there’s a lot of things I could do with it. Just haven’t bought one yet. Yeah it was really cold. I couldn’t turn the heat on in the garage because that torpedo heater is very loud and then it would’ve interrupted the video. I hope you’re doing well my friend!
@@SladesVWBeetle i just looked those up. aren't as expensive as i thought (80 or so). doing well here in ks. hope the pa winter doesn't run too long for you.
Thank you sir it was very informative
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment!
Good show!!! Yeh i don't think you would get a holley 3310 or a quadrajet in that can.... The cleaner years ago came in 2 or 2.5 gallon bucket with the strainer....
Thank you!! Yeah the solex barely fit. I’m going to be doing another test with it. I have some other carbs here, a 30 pict 2 that’s been sitting for years. I want to see how well it does.
Hi, nice video and appreciate taking the time to do a detailed one. I have a question. I just rebuilt top end of my 71 Super Bug (stock 1600). Did 15min running in. I noticed that the engine was consuming a lot of fuel during this period (no black smoke or anything), had trouble idling. But I did not worry too much of the tuning, since it's just the break in. After letting the engine cool down, I have removed the fan shroud and intake because i want to do few adjustments to the fan shroud, etc. When i removed the two intake manifolds, oh dear...there was a lot of fuel found pooled up in the intake area (inside the head). When looked down the intake from where the carb sits, the walls were wet with fuel.
Still I have not touched the carb or attempted to rebuild. This car is a barn find, did fire up and ran fine before I did the re-build. I would appreciate if you could comment why the intake it getting flooded with fuel. Could it be a sticky float needle? anything else i should check for. Thanks in advance.
If the intake is getting flooded with fuel. I would first check the needle and seat. Sometimes it is not shimmed properly. Which means it will not shut off the fuel completely from entering. You might want to try that first.
I'm a novice this is my first bug of my own need to see the spring placement so I know I got it right lol
Do you mean the return spring?
Awesome video, thank you very much! Curious how to determine if the throttle bushings are bad?
Sometimes with the spring disconnected, the return spring, see if there’s movement up and down. Also if it’s on the car. You could spray some WD-40 on the shaft while it’s running to see if it idles up or down quickly. Like a vacuum leak
Great video. I'm going to do my first rebuild on my 34 pict 3 tomorrow. Do I have to wash the carburetor with water first before spraying with carburetor cleaner? Thanks.
Use the carburetor cleaner first, to scrub it really good. Then rinse with water after you’re done.
Hi Slade, unless you can stabilize your gopro camera the headset moves around too much. Example is my tilt trim video for my mercury 60hp outboard. I found for me using a gopro hand clamp on a 2ft tripod puts you right over your work. The hand clamp is on a flexible neck to twist it anyway you want it. I quit using my headset. I guess the newer gopro has a stability feature so it may work better with a headset?
Yes you’re absolutely right. I need to order the big accessory kit that comes with everything since it has so many different options. For what I did there, I would’ve used a harness, attached to my chest and it could have done a nice job watching exactly what I was doing.
Will be doing this in the spring of 2021 !!
It’s worth a good cleaning!
Speaking of testing products.... have you tested the AMR 500 supercharger for the beetle engines yet.?
No I haven’t yet, but I can assure you I would love to!
Hi. 9:45. That bended tube. I have a carb solex 31 pict 3. There is no such tube. Just a hole. Do all carbs have it?
Awesome! I was wondering how to get that ball bearing out in the bowl.
I just did mine last week. Soaked it in pinesol for awhile then blasted it with carb cleaner
Came out pretty good
Nice!! I have heard others have used the pinesol. I’ll have to try that. I bought the dip since I have four more carbs to do. Glad this video helped!
Great video thank you so much
I didn't know if the float was adjustable I have an empi model and it keeps dumping fuel like it's going out of style. I think the P.O. out the half moon clip in backwards I didn't know any better before watching and did the same. Hopefully that's the deal. Again just wondering
I’ll have my website up soon for specs etc...But until then:
Yes there is a float level adjustment for the needle and seat.
It is washers/shims!

@@SladesVWBeetle Roger that. I was thinking that was what I needed to know. I just like to check on people who know what's up. Thank you again.
You’re very welcome! Thanks for being here.
Great video
I have a question on the bolts that go through the butterfly on the throttle. I had to replace mine. Should I use some sort of thread lock?
I’ve never put Loctite on those to be honest with you. I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt to use the blue stuff.
@@SladesVWBeetle Thanks. My throttle bushings came today so I'm ready to get this thing finally running right.
@@randall1959 The throttle bushings will make a major improvement. That’s for sure.
@@SladesVWBeetle There's no slop in the shaft at all. I got a set of brass bushings from a shop in England.
I think that old carb had more issues than just bushings. What's weird is that I ended up doing some jetting on the Empi and went back to the 009 and tuned it by ear. Hardly any flat spot. ua-cam.com/video/phLxd1ObjFY/v-deo.html
How do you know if the shelf in a carb is bad before you rebuild it if you’ve never had it on a car
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
Your welcome thanks for being here!
Slades, wow this is a great tutorial. Where did you get the chem dip? Online or at the local auto parts store? I have a couple of solex I have to refurbish.
Thanks my friend! I actually bought it at Oreillys. They have it on Amazon, but it was easier just to run down and grab it. I have four sitting on the shelf I’m probably going to slowly clean up.
Thanks for the tutorial.
Question: I have a carb with a leak around the throttle shaft. Have you ever attempted to repair it and if so was it a successful repair.
There are brass inserts available that replace worn out plastic bushes, but carbs that don't have them require specialist machining.
It's pretty straightforward to do but getting the throttle plate screws out can be tricky as they are peened.
I've repaired two carbs with no subsequent leaks.
@@djambrosia thanks for the info... Much appreciated!
That guy they call Volkzbitz is an expert at that stuff. I want to send a 34/3 to him. I never tried them myself. But djambrosia explained it very well!
@@SladesVWBeetle thanks for the reply.
Absolutely! I try to reply as quick as I can. I’ve seen a couple videos on people doing the bushings. I have some carburetors sitting on my shelf I probably will attempt it anyhow. And of course I’ll film one I do. I’m curious to see because the one I have, does have a throttle shaft leak.
I just bought a 1973 Super Beetle and stumbled onto Jbugs looking for parts. Do you have an opinion of the site? Are they reputable?
I’m not really that big of a fan of them. I’m not saying they’re horrible, but I usually deal with Wolfsburg west, West Coast metric, or CIP1. I’ve had a lot of luck with those three.
Come to think of it I should probably do a video on, the online stores. I never thought of it until now.
If you have a shop do this cleaning and service, what would be an estimate of the charges per carb?
Honestly I’m not sure.
@@SladesVWBeetle We figured out what our problem is. Our engine is a dual port 1600 with dual Kadron/Solex 40/28s. The guy that set it up did not put a pressure regulator in line so it was flooding out.
@@Rockinbiker1946 oh dang!! Definitely should have a regulator, I’m glad you got it sorted out. It makes a huge difference.
Why don't you soak the jets & brass parts in the Carb Cleaner ?
Honestly because my older brain forgot!! 😂😂😂
@@SladesVWBeetle Cuz I'm doing this TOMORROW and I wanted to know if there was a reason to AVOID putting them. Thanks for the reply. They shall be DUNKED :)
Wait!!! Make sure you read the bottle my friend. Or they can I should say. I’m not sure if it’s friendly with brass. It probably is, but just make sure
I've seen Seafoam do wonders for carbs that are having intermittent issues.
Honestly I agree, I’ve had a lot of luck with seafoam. I had to pick a beetle up about 10 years ago.
It had been sitting for a couple of years and was being cranky and smelled horrible, while running. Well it barely ran.
I poured some seafoam in and let it soak and drove it over an hour home with no issue. Sure wish I was on UA-cam then. Would have made for a fun video lol
@@SladesVWBeetle There's a farmer on this site that does unbelievable things with it. I like seafom and marvel mystery oil.
@@randall1959 oh wow!! Marvels!! My father used that stuff back in the day. I should get into the habit of using it he swore by the stuff. That’s just brought back a memory.
@@SladesVWBeetle it does wonders for all sorts of issues. Honda Goldwings have starter issues and it will unstick one. I've also seen it break loose stuck pistons.
@@randall1959 I should grab a can of mystery when I’m out next time. I have an old dual port engine here that’s frozen. I really have no idea how long it has been sitting. Would be fun to see if it would loosen the cylinders up. And possibly make it run. Lol probably a good video 😂
Congratulations from Portugal! This is a very interesting video.
Just one question : the dimensions of that long screew that you use to take off the pin access to the ball?
look up the dimensions for a VW bug tail light screw as that is what Volkswagen says to use
I wish I could buy that Chemdip stuff here. I might get a medium sized ultrasonic cleaner instead. I have some carbies to clean and want to do a thorough job.
Huh. All these years and I never knew the taillight screw fits into the ball bearing screw in the float. Thanks man, that’s a huge VWlife hack!
You can’t order through amazon for the chem dip? Do you have access to pinesol? Honestly does a good job too! I’m gonna buy an ultra sonic cleaner and do a video on it. I’ve been wanting one!
Glad the video helps others. Yup the twilight screw threads right in! Thanks for being here!
@@SladesVWBeetle shipping to Australia is sadly more than the product costs.
Oh I didn’t realize, that really kind of stinks honestly.
good stuff
Thank you so much!
great job im getting some cleaner ;) question, im running a single port 1641cc freshy built motor running a 31 pict carb and wondering what jets to use? Shes running rich on idle and running.
cheers Niko.
Thank you so much for being here. The jetting would be according to your area. I know in my area for example on a 34 pict carburetor. I have to run a 60 idle and 130 main due to the ethanol.
where are you located. curious
I’m north eastern United States, unfortunately in the rust belt LOL
@@SladesVWBeetle I’m in New York, r u in PA?
very nice

Hi Are you still making new vidoes ,
Yes! I never stopped. Now I’m starting to do two every week.
Thats Great news I have being following your vidoes since i bought a Beetle 1976 1600 from my dad in law , I cleaned the tank installed new fuel line , plug wires and repaired wiring , rebuilded the carb , and got the car running , but for some odd reason , I am not getting it to start again after it standed from some time , it look like the carb is leaking at the base plate and it looks like , there is fuel in the oil , ai bought a new carb same problem ran last weekend and now doesnt want to start , also fuel leaking at the rubber joint on the manifold on the right hand side , I am so frusted any advice you can give i will appricate thankz for you vidoes

I have an old original West German 34 Pict 3 in Chem Dip right now. It can sit there while I'm waiting on throttle bushings from GB. Have you watched a dirty carb in Chem Dip? I didn't realize they actually boil or appear to ua-cam.com/video/eB4dlf_miGk/v-deo.html
I didn’t notice mine boiling at all, not like that, but I know you’re not supposed to have the lid on.
@@SladesVWBeetle I just pulled mine out of the Chem Dip and it turned the metal really dull with this black crud on it. The crud washed off for the most part but it really stained my hands. Maybe I got a bad batch? I have used this in the past but never had this issue before. But it did get rid of the dirt.
I don't understand what aspects of this video
