    I bought a 2004 4S and I couldn't be happier! I actually love the slightly retro interior, the aero front end, and the beautiful rear end. There is no such thing as a bad day in a Porsche 911!

    This video is one of the main reasons I went and bought a black Porsche 996 yesterday. It cost 19 500 dollars and of course came with 6 gear manual. Thanks for a great video and great inspiration

    What hardly anyone knows, there is a long history and pattern to Porsche prices. After depreciating for 10 years or so they bottom out and then begin a long gradual price appreciation. As long as the car is well-maintained then regardless of model they will only go up in value after the first 15 years. Right now 996 prices have been going down 10-15 years, none are going up, nobody wants one- even though they were as justifiably acclaimed when they came out as every other 911 generation. So yes you have nailed it. The 996 is a bargain. There will never be a better time to buy and drive one. Ten years from now everyone will be complaining there are no good 996's for under $50k.

      There will always be hidden gems out there. When this one gets hot, there will be other great underappreciated cars to get. Just watch where the masses go, and then head in the opposite direction.

      But not with Porsches, usually. The Premier Driving Experience. There is no substitute. Right now, the seventies and eighties Porsches should be reasonably priced but instead they are priced far too high and well out of reach for nearly all of us. We need what little opportunities we can get.

    Bought my 2001 996 12 years ago and it brings me more happiness than all 3 relationships I've been in. When I'm down or having a bad day I just take it on the road and drive it hard which is the way you're supposed to drive these cars. The sound of the engine and putting it through all 6 gears is better than any antidepressant for me.

    I picked up a 1999 996 cab and it had the IMS changed as well as a new clutch and pressure plate. A lot more was donebut the important part was that the price was rite and the car was well cared for since new. I love this car ! My wife and I go for fun rides all the time and enjoy the heck out of it. Quick and reliable. I LIKE the headlights. I have met some other Porsche people and the air cooled owners look down their nose at the 996/997, GREAT !As long as they keep doing that the prices will stay low. Now I am looking for another one, this time a coupe.

      I paid 18k, BUT, the previous owner replaced the IMS and clutch/pressure plate, rebuilt the trans, replacedall the hoses and clamps, replaced the water pump and had the seats re done and a new rag top !It came with all paperwork since new including the original window sticker. Like I said I love driving this car, no regrets.

    Owned my 2000 996 C2 for 8 years now.Paid 22k back in 2010.Car had 57k on it.Now has 105k.I haven't done the IMS,just religious about oil changes every 5k.I have a magnetic drain plug to clue me in if anything is starting to grenade in between oil changes. Aside from 3 sets of rear tires, a cracked coolant resevoir,leaky water pump and a noisy alternator bearing that I replaced it because of,she's been a blast to drive. It's got the tiptronic automatic, but still is fun.I plan on keeping it forever.

    After moving from the States back to the UK, I've been lucky to run a 2015 V8 Mustang GT with performance pack for 20 months, a car I loved, the car I replace it with is a 1998 Carrera which I collect in a weeks time, gone from a new car to old car and I already know after the test drive it's going to provide the smiles per miles the Mustang did.
    Great review.

    This is a great car, no doubt, but for those of you that think the IMS is not an issue I urge you to change your mind if you haven't replaced it. I was told through dealers and personal research that the issue was a bit exaggerated. I did it anyway and found that the oem bearing would have been lucky to last another 1000 miles. So take it seriously and for fucks sake don't baby the car! They are meant to be driven! Lugging it around town only means you are compromising the coolant flow and the oil pressure (that is especially true for any water-cooled 911, oil pressure for the air cooled). I absolutely love my 996, but don't ignore the general consensus about the IMS bearing. Peace

      Agreed, and while you in there replace the clutch also, even if its a little worn out since you really only paying for the parts and not so much the labor.

    Great video review! Couldn't have said it any better. 996's are insane bargains right now!! You gotta get a 911...not a Boxter though...especially at the current rediculously low prices... If you have the means, go get one now!!.. Don't worry about then IMS.. just service the car regular and listen to it... or if you're a "worrier", then get the IMS upgrade and be done with it... It's STILL a crazy deal WITH the extra cost of the IMS upgrade. The rest of this amazing sports car is cheap to maintain compared to anything else out there that compares to the 911 in performance and unique driving experience!!!!

    Thank you! You did so much justice for this car and it is a magnificent machine! I think the reason this car wasn't as much loved as it should've been was because of the poor timing of it's release after the famed 993. A minimalists dream car for the enthused driver.

  • @davidwbybee3450

    I absolutely agree with everything you said in this video. I have owned 11 911s, a 928, and 4 914s. I just picked up my most recent 911. A 1999 with manual transmission and base model. The guy in New Jersey was the last owner for 3 years and only drove it 5000 miles. He put this on Ebay for $500 over trade in which is what a dealer offered him. I bid $7800 and won the auction. He called me and he split the shipping cost to Utah with me. OMG!!! As lucky as I have ever been. It is 97% perfect and I just retired. Keeping it forever and owe zero. How awesome is that for a Guards Red, black leather interior, 6 speed manual 911 C2 coupe with sunroof?

    For all of us concerned about the Porsche IMS Bearing issue - I found a very informative article from Autohaus Hamilton in Australia about the IMS. The article also lists all the models and engines (with engine numbers) that are affected. To read the article just type in “Autohaus Hamilton IMS” into google. The Porsche models that are prone to IMS failure and should be replaced are: - All 986 Boxster models. - 987 Cayman & Boxster models up to engine number 61504715 - All 996 models (not including: GT and Turbo models) - 997 3.6ltr with M96/05 up to engine number 6950745

    although mechanically similar, the 997 is the generation to get. yes, they cost a fair bit more than the 996 but prices have bottomed out and they will appreciate quicker than the 996 as it one of the best 911 generations. the 997 is the last of the raw, analogue 911s just like the 993 was the last air cooled.

      True. Drove a 997 for 3 years. Sold for more than I paid for it. Some problems - quite a lot in fact - but absolutely worth it and great bang for the buck. Already regret letting it go. Just save up some money, go directly for the 997.

    Good video! I just sold my 99 cab - I'm sure I'll regret it but I'm moving on to another bargain right now - a n54 powered 335i. The baby seat just wouldn't fit in the 996 and it was a nearly even trade.
    If you own one of these - you need to do the Fister exhaust mod! Sounds epic and is a bargain at like $400. The videos on my channel of my 996 show the sound.

    I recently purchased an 03 911 and have had some ups and downs with it. Driving wise the car is an absolute blast considering the price point. I got it checked out by a reputable mechanic and it passed with flying colors, but a month after owning it I started experiencing problems. Unfortunately I had to get a new air engine oil separator, throttle body, 02 sensors, passenger side catalytic converter (damn Cali), assortment of coolant hoses and a few other random pieces that started to go over the months I started driving it. Granted the car is at 93k miles (88 when I got it), I believe the issues were caused due to it only being driven a couple of times per month by the previous owner compared to quite alot by me. All in all though, I really love the car and it still performs well to today's standards. I have not experienced anything negative or a CEL in awhile now, and still drive the car almost daily.

  • @Audidude
    @Audidude 7 років тому

    Great down to earth review, and mentions all the reasons why I bought a '03 C2 manual with only 64,000kms recently. Yes it's the "base model", but if you want light weight better steering and the driver involvement that comes from 2WD, it's the one to have. If you want sexier hips and more grip in the wet go for the C4S, but more grip comes with more weight, less steering feel (but still very good), and less driver involvement. For me the C2 manual has the raw appeal of a classic sports car. Keep your big heavy paddle flapping new ones, give me this any day! I don't give a rats if it's slower, I go racing in something else on the track for that kind of thrill. For the Thrill of Driving on the street the 996 is still, for now, one of the best bargains available. PS IMS replaced this week (LNE) , as a preventative measure, effectively removing one of the main risks of 996 ownership.

    • @IronicTonic8
      @IronicTonic8 7 років тому +1

      It's best done when you need to remove the trans to do something like service the clutch. However, my car had a brand new clutch and I wasn't willing to wait until the next clutch change interval. Make sure you change the oil twice per year regardless of miles and don't cruise at low RPM for extended periods of time. The bearing health is related to how the car is driven and how frequently the oil is changed. Keep the RPM's above 2500 while cruising and drive the car like it was meant to be driven. Take it to redline periodically and it should prolong the bearing life. You want to do this because the bearing experiences increased vibration at lower RPM's which can cause it to wear prematurely. Cars with IMS issues tend to be driven around at low speeds, and frequently sat for extended periods of time which allows the bearing seals to dry out. Tracked cars tend to have the least amount of issues. This info is only applicable to the 996, the 997 has a different bearing design and actually benefits from low rpm operation, while tracked cars tend to have more issues.

    • @erikny3137
      @erikny3137 7 років тому

      IronicTonic then I should be reasonably safe for now. I take it to the redline everytime I drive it (when engine is warm) and also try to keep it on high rpms. It is going to rest for the winter and the first thing I do come spring is an oil change at my local Porsche expert. I may do the IMS-change then also, but haven't decided yet.

    I bought one of these, a 2003 Targa not long after seeing your video although I had been looking for a while, amazing car! I did spend about two weeks going through it last spring, did the IMS Solution, water pump, thermostat, idlers, serpentine belt, and rear main seal. Dropped the oil sump while I had it on my little scissor lift and looked around in there and it was all like new, car had 65,000 on it when I bought it from an 80 year old “car guy” that just had too many toys. The air cooled guys can look down there nose all they want but they still cant keep up with you on the road or track. These cars have amazing suspension and ac that works what more can you ask for?

It unfortunately has caused me to lose .8 seconds and my dignity as it is a tiptronic car but it is very much an enjoyable 911. I changed the IMS for peace of mind and added new tires and a couple other items that being a garage queen for so long can demand. Looking forward to years of enjoyment outside the garage.

    I've always liked the 996- besides the difference in exterior design & styling they seem to be unique in way that makes them really cool ( vs. 993 or 997, etc. )

    Just bought my 1999 996 manual m030 etc before seeing this video. This is just such a great car! Had the money for a 997 or a 996 4S as well but chose to go with an early 996 instead. So cool!

    996 are great cars, everything you put into it driving is what you get back. No electrical or tech to help driving, just the rubber on the road.

    I disagree that any car over $10,000 is a bargain, but it was still worth it to me when I got mine, although I had to cut off almost every other expenditure and live like a Pauper. The 911 is an excellent car and at least it is now within reach of some of us plebeians for a very short period of time. I agree with the other guys though. I wish you weren't putting out this kind of information. it's not fair to those of us who have done our own homework. They are already rising again in price too quickly, and it's because of videos like this. that said, it is a good video, and it's spot-on. I just wish you had made it about some Honda or Subaru or something that I could care less about. :D

    Thanks for the review. I have an 02 996 and seems to have a lot of issues for a car with 64k miles. Right now it needs an ignition for around $800. The oil level at the dipstick is never the same for some unknown reason. After watching this i feel like maybe I should keep it and sell my 260z instead.

    Very helpful video. I can't wait to get a 996 and the fact the lights are funny looking saves you ~$15k by not having to buy a 997. There is something about the 1999-2001 front bumper that looks better than the 2002-2005 but maybe I'm seeing things.

    Excellent job! If only Porsche was as quality control conscious with the minor bits(HVAC, assorted connectors) as they were with the 911 drivetrain, which is about the best on the planet. But then, all German automakers have slipped behind Toyota and Honda when it comes to quality control. Then there's the matter of pricey Porsche maintenance/repair.

    the tips are badass too. they let you get crazy on curvy roads. Everyone that has a tip loves them and drops their manual bias pretty quickly. I just picked up a loaded 99 cab w/ hardtop for $15k. I feel like I jacked the original $100k purchaser. I'd look for one with normal mileage. I don't really trust a 15 yr old car with 30k. it doesn't make since not to drive this car. It's an honor and joy to drive one.

    • @PetrolHead1
      @PetrolHead1  8 років тому

      I agree with what you said on mileage as it pertains to used car buying. However, what do you mean when you say "tips let you get crazy on backroads."? If you are referring to tiptronics being superior on a road with corners I may have to disagree. Not until the pdk era would I ever even MAYBE consider buying a non-manual Porsche. Being able to row your own gears with no delay, do the heel-toe pedal dance, and have absolute control is the pure way in my and most enthusiast's opinion to have fun in a car.

    • @alexmalmberg7525
      @alexmalmberg7525 8 років тому

      basically, you can use both hands on the wheel and it can shift coming around a corner without losing traction. it allows complete control of what the rear is doing. I don't know if one is better than the other, but I know the tiptronics are fun as hell. there are some give and takes. the PDK combines the best of both. consider the auto, they are a blast, aren't over revved, haven't been mis-shifted and don't have the load of clutch drops. the germans know their transmissions and it's geared perfect which is the main thing.

    • @alexmalmberg7525
      @alexmalmberg7525 8 років тому

      also, I would have thought the auto would be missing something, but I was wrong. I think people are finding it out with the pdk. you kind of just forget about a clutch and focus elsewhere.

    I just drove one of these back to back with a 2008 Civic Si. The Civic has an 8300rpm redline and an even better clutch and shifter. Even the steering and handling felt better to me! Maybe I'm weird, but then again maybe the 8th generation Civic Si is just that good. That's not to take anything away from the 996 but for the same money, give me the 2008-2011 Si any day.

    • @hammychan1
      @hammychan1 7 років тому

      Less cool factor and outright acceleration on the Civic, but really I didn't feel an enormous difference on power. VTEC sounded even better than the delightful flat six. 8000+ rpm is always impressive to hear.

    Love my 996 2005 C4S with sport exhaust for a bargain. It's the best sports car I ever owned (previously owned Boxster s). I put on GT3 throttle body and IPD added more torque and go. Miguel the patent holder (Tuner Mall FL) of IMS replacement with Direct Oil Feed (DOF) said that with hundreds of IMS he replaced. Not even 3% percent had a bad IMS. It's fear driving the price down of the 996. It's like the stock market. Fear drive the price down (selling) and the smart one buy and reap the reward when fear subsides.

    I dont know if its because I been riding motorcycles more in the recent years but I finally got to drive one of these and tried my best to enjoy it but it felt slow and lifeless, which sucks because it was always one of my dream cars. It might be the same issue as my gto, it doesnt feel like your going fast even though you are. I had a 924 that was slow as hell but was really fun to drive. Oooor motorcycles just ruined all cars for me which sucks :/.

    Great car and good review. My only concern is your habit of crossing the double yellow, it's completely unnecessary and it makes the rest of us driving enthusiast look bad. If you can't keep it in your lane you need to slow it down. I enjoy spirited driving as much as the next guy but i never have the need to cross into oncoming traffic to have fun.

      Petrol_Head Haha, no, you nailed it! I bought a '98 Carrera 2 just shortly after commenting and have put over 3000 miles on it already! Fabulous car to drive (particularly for the money). Had one or two issues with it - needed to replace the air/oil separator and one of the camshaft rubber bungs came out (due to a bit of a botch job by a previous owner) which left oil all over the road. Just replacing the blower motor too - but hey! The car is 18 years old and will have things needing done to it - but it's worth keeping on top of the maintenance as, after all, it's a 911!
