  • Part 1 of 2 videos. In this part I talk about the true costs of owning a 911. I was a little off the mark in my last video and the costs of ownership over 3 years have ended up being a lot more than I had anticipated. Still does it make financial sense to drive one everyday as opposed to a brand new hatch back? Find out!

    If you take it to a dealer, expect to get shafted. The Porsche dealer is in the business of selling 100k+ cars and over prices its services as people who can afford the new car generally have a load more money, these cars are dead easy to work on as they were designed for the track and things like brakes and suspension components to be replaced on the fly, same goes for servicing. With just a £70 jack, a £200 Halford full socket and spanner set you can do 90% of the jobs on this car. If you really don't like doing your own work then find a decent Porsche specialist, most charge £300 to service a 996 and £500 for a major. Also working on your own cars In my experience make you much more comfortable with the car.

      It’s true but you need to be confident and able in the first place this is not for novices to work on ,

    first rule of expensive cars...stay away from main dealers, find a good independent...example...BMW Z4 after a new ABS pump fitted the car needed "coding" to remove warning lights and match the part to the car....main stealer £150 in all day, Plough Motors, Boldon T&W, £25 and 10 mins for a perfect job.

    that's a very interesting point that despite some of the higher maintenance costs appreciation (or atleast lack of significant depreciation) more than makes up for it when you compare it with alternatives.

    Only someone with money to waste takes a 20 year car to a dealer to fix everything that is “wrong” with the car. Spent 10k on a 20k car? Mine has 85k and I sent 15k to buy it, owned it for 3 years and spent about 1000 all in for brakes and oil changes I did myself not including one set of tires. Mine is 99 cabriolet.

    You've just hit the nail on the head - no depreciation. Covers a lot of maintenance. I had a 964RS i bought for 20K in 2000. Thought id done well selling it in 2004 for 24K ! Had i known..
    Have a 140i M sport and I'm bored with it so looking at 996's. Modern hatchbacks are quick, but even the best of them will not give you the feedback and driving pleasure of a Porsche.

      john doe totally get a 996!! If you can stretch to a GT3 even better investment. I’ve seen some that have had rear seat belts installed if you are like me and need to have a “4 seater” 😂

    You have no idea. My 2003 C4S. 3 owners and 59k. Purchased for 20 k 2019. Full porsche service , water pump oil change for gearbox. then complete need for new brake pipes, then a new exhaust 5k, then bore scored!!!! All work now done. Now a great car. Bill....18k. I have had thre previous 911's all 996's none of them were cheap to run. the car was with a specialist having the work completed for 18 months! I love 996's , god knows why? Would I do it all over again? Would I f!!!

    Costs are always higher than you expect when you tot it up. I have a b5 s4 and i thought i hadnt spent too much on it and i worked out i have spent 6k in 6 months. Quickly spirals out of control. (That 6k is turning into around 9k by the end of the year)

  • @jackkallemdjian3945
    @jackkallemdjian3945 5 років тому +5

    Don’t be under any illusions that a 10/ 15 year old 911 will be cheap to keep PROPERLY maintained,

    • @ocvegasproperty
      @ocvegasproperty 4 роки тому

      IMHO “properly” maintained is not taking it to the dealer and trying to fix every squeak back to new condition for 10k. That’s nuts.

    My infiniti dealer gave 5 pages of service requirements for my q50 so t be aware that any dealer will try to increase the bill as much as they can,take care to oil change water coolant spark plugs and fuel filter and this car can life for your children

      Buy a car from Hartech and sign up for there fully fixed price servicing if your worried about costs, also people worry about a 3K service cost but will happily loose 5K in depreciation on another car, where as the 996 now has zero depreciation.

    Thanks for a great honest post. I was in the market for a 996 C4s but with prices pushing well over £20k for a private sale and over £25k from trade I went for a straight Carrera 4. If you are patient there are good ones around and from my experience they are not selling anywhere near as fast as many will have you believe. I negotiated and paid £14k for a 2000 my C4 with many desirable extras, 71,000 fully documented serviced miles, from a PCGB member knowing that I had paid £10k less than I would have paid for the C4s (and by the way there are even more C4s for sale than top condition standard Carreras), with the comfort of knowing that I had money in the bank should I encounter an unexpected large maintenance bill.
    Its personal opinion but having gone down the route I took I'm actually really taken with the cleaner lines and smaller proportions of the standard Carrera. I also believe really top good examples will become rarer than the C4s over time.
    Don't be put off, these are amazing cars whichever model you buy, if you buy right what else comes close to a 175mph supercar for £20k let alone £14k. I have no current maintenance requirements and it doesn't even require an mot or service for another 9 months! I love my 911.

    Did you get a pre-purchase inspection before you bought? Would it have made a difference anyway? Do you think it's just because it's such an old car with quite a few mile on it? I was tempted to buy a Boxster 981 or 2009 onwards 987 S but i'd rather take an MX-5 if it's going to be a money pit. Boxsters aren't going to appreciate any time soon I don't think. Would be good to have a health check before you buy!

    • @CharlieDrives
      @CharlieDrives  5 років тому

      In nearly did buy an mx5 😂 nope no inspection it was quite a distance to travel. No oil leaks and the paperwork checked out. So did the sound of the engine (from what I could hear!) oh well.

    Avoid the stealerships! Take it to your nearest independent.. Parr, Hartec, etc. Also, I do a lot of my own mechanics, and buy oe quality parts, not so called original parts which is a total lie cos porsche doesn’t actually make parts. I save thousands!

    How long do clutches last?

    • @CharlieDrives
      @CharlieDrives  3 роки тому

      Depends on use. You would want to see a clutch has been replaced on a 996 that has done more than 50/60k I’d say.

    Are there non franchised dealers that would offer the same service for less? I still think its worth it though. I wouldn't mind my wife giving me a clutch for my birthday.

    • @CharlieDrives

      There are quite a number of independent specialists out there. I used to use one previous to going direct to Porsche. The only reason being is that the price the independent quoted for this job was marginally more!! The other nice thing about going directly to Porsche is they gave me a brand new Cayenne S and the new 718 Boxster S to drive around in for 3 weeks!

    Official Porsche Centres (OPC) in the UK are finely-tuned rip-off merchants. The equivalent of the Mafia. By all means use their 'free' health check, get their MOT, and then get on your merry way to a specialist to review the recommendations. 50% of these suggestions are crap, the rest can be done at 50-60% of the Mafia prices and they'll do a much better job as they have a reputation to uphold and are enthusiastic fans of the marque

    NEVER GO TO A MAIN DEALER WITH A OLDER PORSCHE. AND IT IS NOT A DAILY DRIVER - GET A FUCKED OLD MK5 GOLF OR SOMETHING....KEEP THIS FOR HIGH DAYS AND WEEKENDS. YOU CANNOT HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT.
