Wow! Nice job, and thanks so much for the detailed share. I love that bumper. I plan to do less mods with even more (or less) stealth theme. Likely no lift, roof rack, mounted radios, light bars... I feel like I can still do most everything with proper skids, rails approach angle and tire upgrade. Love the little details you included in your presentation including the mount rail for your phone/iPad and back marine charging usb ports. Well done. 👍🏻

Perhaps a stock size tire or one size larger? I’m asking from a conservative perspective where I’d rather not mess with the Lexus stock suspension system. Thanks!
I’ve had an LX in the past and looked at both this time around. Regardless of price, the GX is smaller in dimensions. Some of the trails I ride would give the LX a hard time because of how wide it is. But you trade off space, luxury, ride and even some off road options. Pros and cons for both so it depends on what you’ll use it for. This is my 2nd GX so you can tell which works better for me! :D

Great Video, really something I am looking for too, creating an off road style not too extreme, family friendly, just to check your back wheels are KDSS so you haven't done any changes there in terms of suspension lift? Front wheels 1.5 Inch lift only since Front is usually leaning bit low?
Thanks! It has a Dobinsons lift on it resulting in 1.5” lift. In this video the tires add another .5” of lift. Here’s the suspension kit details and current setup: txgxoverland.com/lexus-gx-overland-build/
Just getting into the GX460. Had to "consolidate" my Ford Expedition and Jeep Rubicon into 1 vehicle so I thought that this platform was perfect. I have exactly the same situation using this as my daily driver and needed to have it fit in my office garage which is stupid low at 6'4". I love your approach and have the same philosophy trying to keep it stealthy as I have to also entertain clients, etc. and drive my wife to dinner on "date nights". I plan to follow in your footsteps with your build. BTW, I am also a Ham. If you ever change your UHF/VHF rig, you can most likely have a "Mars Mod" done on the new radio and also Tx on GMRS channels. So you go from 2 radios to 1. I have that same Kenwood but also have a Yaesu FTM500 which I plan to install in my GX with that Mod. I found that that Garmin system is very slow so years ago I bought a Sat phone which is super reliable. Looking forward to your future videos!
Really like your take on the build that fits your weekend objectives. I'm new to Overlanding so would like your take on which tire/wheel combination would be best without sacrificing too much highway comfort, and not have to chop huge chunks of the wheel liner to fit larger wheels. If I stick with my stock wheels ('19 GX Premium trim), what would be the largest tire size you recommend. Also, would getting larger tires require suspension swap/upgrade? Thanks!
Wheels/tires depend on style, intended use, budget, size, etc so really a personal decision. I will say that my Falken Wildpeak 265/65/18 do not rub (combined with my 1.5" lift) and are the largest tires I've found that fit in the spare tire location. Keep in mind that even in the same tire size the actual diameter can very so be sure to check the actual diameter size on whatever tire size you choose. I would also encourage you to stay away fro spacers if you plan to do any real offroading - they will become the weak link in your setup. You can probably fit that tire size without a suspension lift - and certainly you don't have to have a suspension upgrade to be able to overland. The GX is quite capable on it's own. If you find yourself needing more clearance then you can start thinking about a lift. I would encourage you to do some lite adventuring first to get used it and develop an opinion of what you might want from your rig - then design your overland setup accordingly.
Um… why? And the extra radios are for communicating easily with others on the trail around d me or for communicating with others in civilization during an emergency.
Question for you: have you ever experienced steering wheel vibrations on the highway? At highway speeds, I will sometimes randomly get a shimmy/vibration in my steering wheel, and it will go away after a little. doesn't always happen. I have a 2019 with 20k miles. I got new tires and that didn't fix it. I've been told its a quirk with this car. Have you ever had that?
Never… but it sounds like a Jeep death wobble caused by an imbalance of tires, suspension and geometry. If your rig is stock - 0% chance this should be happening. If you have a lift or bigger tires could be a culprit. If the latter, see if you have a good 4x4 shop around you that can troubleshoot.
I did put larger tires on. Currently running 275/65R18’s and they would run if not lifted… most on lock to lock turning. Here’s the full build: txgxoverland.com/lexus-gx-overland-build/
Did you put another Falken on th e spare? I've got the same tires and factory hitch so it looks real tight. hate to junk hitch for a Curt just to fit 265/65/18 spare.
I’d love to see a vid on the 80/20 dash mount, really clever and visually stealth. Also any plans for a wood delete? If so pls document, as I’m toying with the idea of vinyl wrapping my red wood vaneer but I hate trail blazing, I’m more of a good copy-catter!
Thanks! You can find videos on UA-cam of how to take the back console panel off, but basically it pops off, you drill a hole using a step bit, install the plugs, then run the wire down through the console towards the dash. I used an add a fuse on the inside fuse block to give the plugs power.
Great rig! I love how you don't have a ton of stuff hanging off of it as your daily. If I got a 2010-2013 GX would I be able to get away with less trimming on the body panels? Meaning still take off the running boards but not mess with the front bumper trim? Looking at the GX, but not feeling great about trimming for resale. Thanks for any advice.
Most definitely on the front end. The 10-13’ has a stubby front end and lots of people get away with not trimming it (especially with larger tires and /or lift). Rear panels are the same.
I recently bought a '17 GX and I'm outfitting it with similar gear. I haven't purchased rock sliders yet and would appreciate your thoughts on your Metaltech sliders. How long have you had them? Any comments or thoughts on those vs other GX options? Would you use those again if you were doing it over? Anything you don't like about them? Thanks for the videos. Very helpful. Great looking GX!
I would get them again. I prefer the kickouts since its a longer vehicle- can help save those rear tires in rocky situations. I’ve never had to lift the vehicle using them (like via a high lift jack) so can’t speak to their weight bearing ability. Powder coat has held up close to two years. Definitely recommend!
For your applications, this is a well done build! Actually after watching this video, I can say, I like your wheels more on the GX than the 4runner Pro wheels. A tip for your fire extinguisher, you can add a mole panel to the front bottom of your front or passage seat and install the extinguisher there, just my 2 cents, hope it helps. Thank you for the video.
Thanks. I do have a Molle panel under the front seat made by Cross Industries Offroad but the fire extinguisher sticks out too much for my preference. But to each his own!
Have you seen the blitz bumper from victory 4x4? I was in love with the covert bumper from cbi until I saw the blitz bumper. I’m not planning on rock crawling in the gx460 either and victory 4x4 has an CNC aluminum version that weighs 70lbs. Coupled that with a 8k winch, that’s about 140-150lb total. Add 5-10 pounds of weight from each tire and you’re looking at a total of 175lb total. What was your total weight on the covert with the factor 55 and smittybuilt 10k? The winch weight might differ but that’s got to be over 200lba in the front foe the 1.5 inch lift. Dobinson says with each 100lb, you lose a 1/4 inch from the springs. Did you get a better constant load spring or was the stock 1.5 fine? It probably dropped your lift by a quarter inch in the front if you got stock load. Did you lift the rear or just try to keep it one inch rake (factory is 1.5 inch rake - roughly)
Hi there! When selecting a suspension lift its better to know all the weight you plan to put in it so that you can then figure out your approximate total lift. For me - I knew which bumper and winch I was going to use (and their weight which all told is about 140 lbs) so I worked with Kyle Fogle at Treaty Oak in Texas to select springs that would give me a 1.5” lift, with .5” lift from the tires for a total of ~2” lift. Dobinson USA and most other manufacturers have enough spring selection to match your total weight and ride type so really you can design something that works for you. Hope this helps! I think it makes sense. As for tire size on non lifted suspension - I'm not the expert on that but you should check out this great list from GXOR from real world experienced users who posted their tire sizes: lexusgxor.com/mods:wheelstires. Good luck!
@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad thanks! good list here. I just bought the luxury trim which actually has 19" rims! lol... I love the sleeper look you have to stay as consistent with the stock look. @@projectsonepercent924 I imagine you'd find more off road tire options on the 18" rim vs 19" rim. The 18" (and really 15" is best) is better for airing down your tires off road than you'll get with the 19"... something to think about.

Great looking rig! How's the road noise on the Falken Wildpeak. Do you know if you can fit 265/26/18 on stock suspension? Thanks for the walk around and links!
I haven’t really noticed any road noise (slow or fast speeds). Been very pleased with them! On the tire size did you mean 265/65/18? If so - then yes I would think it would fit but can’t confirm 100%.
I barely hear it! I have the windscreen with wind reducing trim. Only time I hear it is occasionally about 55 mph when the wind blows just right I hear a flutter. Happens maybe 3 or 4 times a year.
@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad thanks for the quick response! that’s great! I have the same wildpeaks in a 265/70/17 and read mixed yes and no’s online. Did they go in fully inflated or deflated any at all? I gotta get mine switched out soon
I dont know how much i cut off but i measured what remains with a cloth (flexible) tape measure. At the ends 4 3/8” remains. In the middle 3” remains. Again, that’s using a flexible tape measure applied down the full contour of the trim.
Roof rack, bumper, rock sliders, light bar, accessories all by myself. Did most of the suspension myself (had to get help reattaching sway bar on front and disconnecting springs in the rear). I’d budget about $1k for each major component.
I'm getting into Overlanding; looking at online sites for getting a GX. I hope to purchase in 3 months or so. Do you know any good forums for the NY area (or east coast)? Also, any good shops in the NY area. I don't drive much daily so when I do, I'm looking to get out of NY. I currently don't have a car (no need for one).
I’m in Texas so can’t suggest any local shops in NY but would imagine there are some. Lots of overlanders in Penn and they gotta take their rigs somewhere. For your new Used GX I would suggest the typical used car apps (CarGuru, Cars.com, etc). They’ll be babied rigs used to go to the grocery store so plenty of miles left. Decide what you want to do for suspension and know that based on that some gear (like air suspension) may have to come off and therefore isn’t worth paying for as an option. Lastly, you can checkout the GX community on Facebooks and on clublexus.com. Good luck!
Not bad at all. I dont notice unless the sunscreen is open. Then its just a slight noise. Occasionally a little flutter around 55mph if the wind is just right. I got the wind kit to go with it which helps a ton.
Hey Ashish! It's a Premium. I didn't want to get the Luxury and have to remove a bunch of equipment (air bags, adjustable suspension settings) that I wouldn't be able to use once I installed a lift.

Thanks for this excellent video, much appreciated!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Bumper looks great. What do you do about your front license plate given that you are in Texas?
Unfortunately not a spot for it.
Thanks - check out my vid on the glovebox shelf for radios. Enjoy the build!!!
2 questions: How tall are you? And, what do you use the extra radios for?
If the latter, see if you have a good 4x4 shop around you that can troubleshoot.
cool rig, I love it.
Thanks! What’s your rig setup?
I dig the stealth look, same what I am going for
Less is more…..
Great video, looking for a more friendly DD rig to still take to the mountains. (Will also still keep the built Jeep for the more extreme stuff)
Lol - sames. I have a built Jeep Wrangler LJ setup for the extreme stuff... but boy is it rough on long trips!!! Thanks the comments!
Really like your rig. functional with taste. Looking to do something similar. Is your rig a 2017?
Thanks! 2016 - let kellyrshort@yahoo.com know if you have any questions. I have the full build list on www.TXGXOverland.com
Just purchased mine.
Awesome! 460 or 470?
Whe you took the running boards off did you cut out the step and then reattach the lip?
Correct - cut the trim piece to work with the sliders and reattached to cover the ugly mounting points.
Thank you for sharing, this is such a great build. I’m thinking to do exactly similar low profile mod on my gx and this is very helpful!
Glad it helped - have fun building yours!
I really liked your build. How much do you think it cost you to get to where you are now with the GX?
Your build is awesome! We have done some similar mods and equipment 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. But I did go for safari look🤣
I dig that look just wasn’t right for me on my daily driver. 😀 Thanks for the comments - do you have an IG or YT account so i can see your rig?
Nice video. I purchased a 2021 GX 460 on 1/26/2021.
Awesome! Enjoy it!
@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad Thanks!
Hi, nice build!!! I was wondering if you made the ham radio antenna mount or bought it online?
Thank you
Made it myself out of aluminum flat bar
I have the same rims on my 2021. Did you upsize the tires at all? If you didn't lift would they rub?
I did put larger tires on. Currently running 275/65R18’s and they would run if not lifted… most on lock to lock turning. Here’s the full build: txgxoverland.com/lexus-gx-overland-build/
Any improvements to your approach/departure angles?
Stock front clearance was 21°. After lift and front bumper new front approach angle is 35°. Rear increased from 23° to 25° from lift.
just got a ‘14!😊
Enjoy! Let me know if you have any questions. Here are the specs on my build if it helps: txgxoverland.com/lexus-gx-overland-build/
Did you put another Falken on th e spare? I've got the same tires and factory hitch so it looks real tight. hate to junk hitch for a Curt just to fit 265/65/18 spare.
I did - it’s tight but worked for me.
@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad Factory tow hitch? Thanks for the response!
@@craigboke Yes
Really nice
Thanks!
Very clan and functional build!
I’d love to see a vid on the 80/20 dash mount, really clever and visually stealth. Also any plans for a wood delete? If so pls document, as I’m toying with the idea of vinyl wrapping my red wood vaneer but I hate trail blazing, I’m more of a good copy-catter!
Thanks! Check out this video: Lexus GX Off Road Dashboard Mounting Rail Phone Tablet Video ua-cam.com/video/x-T2GAyV5yE/v-deo.html
Not planning to remove the wood - think I’m one of the few who likes it 😂😂
Very clean! What is the total cost?
I’ve probably got about $5k in it. I did all the installation myself so saved a ton of money.
Very nice!!! Love the usb charging port… would you be able to share info on how you did that? Overall mods are really nice.
Super clean and solid build man! 👌🏼
Thanks!
Are these wheels the dark gray or gloss black? It's hard to tell in this lighting.
Lexus gloss black
Here’s the full build sheet: txgxoverland.com/lexus-gx-overland-build/
Great video! Just curious, did you experience any rubbing from the tires? Do you think the 265/65r18 falken tires would rub without a lift?
Great rig. How tall is it now with the rack and lift? I also have garage issues
About 78” at its highest point
Looks great! Do you still love it? Any complaints? Been considering one of these or the new Grand Cherokee L. It’s for the wife so I’ll guess she’ll have to drive both to see which she likes. I love this truck though!
Thanks! Only thing I might change is put a 2” (i stead of 1.5”) suspension lift on for more clearance on the trail. Otherwise, love it!
@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad awesome!!
Very nice build. Thanks for sharing.
I’m thinking of also keeping my stock rims but with off road tires. Any recommendations on tire size? I kept my stock suspension so I did not lift it.
I'm inspired to look into 18" Lexus GX rims. I know it might be a lot, but I want to stay as close to a stock look as possible.
@@projectsonepercent924 I imagine you'd find more off road tire options on the 18" rim vs 19" rim. The 18" (and really 15" is best) is better for airing down your tires off road than you'll get with the 19"... something to think about.
@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad thanks for the tip! It was an eye-opener when I tried looking for off-road tires for the 19".. There were ZERO. Like non of the popular brands make them. It's a learning process for me.

Thanks for sharing the journey and the details.
Excellent job 👍!
Thanks!
How loud does that roof rack get? Is it obnoxious?
I barely hear it! I have the windscreen with wind reducing trim. Only time I hear it is occasionally about 55 mph when the wind blows just right I hear a flutter. Happens maybe 3 or 4 times a year.
Very nice build, does your 265/65/18 fit in the spare tire location?
The Falken Wildpeak 265/65/18 do. Even in that tire size there is difference in diameter so you have to be careful and look at exact diameter.
Were you able to fit a full sized spare in its stock location?
Yep - sure was!
@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad thanks for the quick response! that’s great! I have the same wildpeaks in a 265/70/17 and read mixed yes and no’s online. Did they go in fully inflated or deflated any at all? I gotta get mine switched out soon
@@daniellee2628 I have 265/65/18’s so slightly smaller.
Hey on you're metaltec sliders, did you cut out the side step... how much did you cut, how many inches.
I dont know how much i cut off but i measured what remains with a cloth (flexible) tape measure. At the ends 4 3/8” remains. In the middle 3” remains. Again, that’s using a flexible tape measure applied down the full contour of the trim.
I just got mine but still in stock shape. How much did you put in it?
Was it done by a professional shop or you put it together?
Good luck!
@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad Thanks. I'll check it out.
How's the wind noise with that roof rack?
Not bad at all. I dont notice unless the sunscreen is open. Then its just a slight noise. Occasionally a little flutter around 55mph if the wind is just right. I got the wind kit to go with it which helps a ton.
What is the trim of this GX - Premium or Luxury?
Hey Ashish! It's a Premium. I didn't want to get the Luxury and have to remove a bunch of equipment (air bags, adjustable suspension settings) that I wouldn't be able to use once I installed a lift.
thats a first. "GX worked from a MPG perspective" hahahahaha. Oh good one
😂😂all about perspective!
Better fuel economy than a Tundra.
Better than a LX, land cruiser, and Tundra, but avg off road mpg
better than a 4runner or Tacoma with more power...
@@mattclose1439 I just sold my I sold my 2018 Tundra and got a used 2017 GX 460. Then sold the GX this year in May got ton of cash for it and got a used 2002 Tacoma Double cab 4wd. For some reason I love the Tacoma more. Not sure why.
Was there a reason for going with Metal tech instead of cbi for sliders?
Yes - i wanted a smooth outboard rail that kicks out at the back. A smooth rail is less likely to get hung up when sliding over a rock. The kickout helps protect rear tires.
Metal tech sliders would be a better choice for body protection. Thank you!
i would suggest use Scosche MPDB Magnetic MagicMount Pro its awesome and dont have to mess with anything just sick it on it and it will hold. Check it out Great video. I love how you did USB its awesome. And LExus with their engineers could not come up with it. hhaaha
