GX460 is the best automobile I have ever owned. I've owned LS400, LS430 and LS460 which I love but I have settled with this GX tank. The only takeaway is that it's thirsty... very thirsty.

The GX is a somewhat overlooked amazing 4x4 platform, I have an 04 GX470 and it has basically the exact same drivetrain. I bought it in March for $5k, did the timing belt service added a 2.5" lift (air suspension delete) and put used all terrains on it from craigslist. My wife and I did an 4000 mile overland trip out west this summer and it performed flawlessly. Did parts of the Alpine loop etc. it never missed a beat, barely spun a tire, even in rain and hail storms while on the trail. I easily kept up with rigs 10x the price. Oh and this truck currently has 262,000 miles on it. If I had the money, I would just buy another GX, they are so good, and so comfortable...

I live in Colorado and get into the back country occasionally and you wouldn’t believe what you can do if you get rid of the low hanging bumper and running board plastic! I hope folks do their research on the air suspension for the Lexus GX470/460. It is only on the rear suspension and only raise/lower the rear not the the entire vehicle. It is more suited for load leveling when towing. There are other vehicles that have full air/hydraulic suspensions that raise/lower the entire vehicle as well as provide load leveling. Examples include the new Land Rover Defender, Range Rover, LR3/LR4, Lexus LX470/570, etc...

There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding about this vehicle in the US and elsewhere. I blame Toyota/Lexus for the marketing on that. What confuses me is that the marketing here in the US is quite different than the rest of the world and they really let companies like ford/Chevy take the off-road marketing prize even though they are trash off road compared to even a stock GX. I’ve had a GX for several years. Off road all the time and it just works. I had an f150 and a Chevy and had to replace a transfer case on the Ford within a year of overlanding. Just confuses me.

I don’t understand why it’s stated that the GX is old school. It’s a real suv, not a cuv. A solid rear axle and body on frame is mandatory for true off roading. Independent front suspension gets it done but is a modern standard, a more old school suv would have a solid front axle too.
And the V8 is old? Unsofisticated by modern standards?? Is a 4 cam , 4 valve per cylinder V8! They’re buttery smooth, torque and power aplenty, easy to work on, and reliable. Not pushrod 2 valve, which would still be plenty and reliable, more reliable than the “modern sofisticated” turbo 4 and 6 cylinder engines that sound unrefined, unbalanced, like flatulence, and are more complex than it needs to be! I’d trust this “old v8” over the new TTV6 in the new GX every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Gas mileage? No red blooded American male ever cared about that crap.

@3:25 Yes it is true that GX has almost same ground clearance as a Highlander (8.1in) but with its KDSS system is has limitations on lifting. Accutune has a nice Tech article only to lift 1in rear for KDSS else you get in to problems like panhard bar hitting KDSS ram. When KDSS leaks its a dealer only fix which is concerning too. Also KDSS seem to have less articulation in rear. At the time I look at GX for my wife it doesn't have standard fuel tank skid either. Having small fuel tank for the v8 was a concern too. End up with a 4Runner Limited with 3rd row for my wife. With trouble free lift (right now having Ironman FCP) and 285/70R17 tires on stock 4Runner wheels look OEM look yet fun to play. If I were to get sliders no need to cut anything, bolts right up.

Ive watched this video a couple of times and it really is very good at describing the capabilities of this truck AND this model, the Black Line Edition. I'm fairly outdoorsy but I don't think I will ever take it out in those situations, 1 because I'm nowhere near terrain like that and 2 not really my thing. However, I do head out to snow country in the winter and for that reason I have a set of dedicated snow tires.
As far as value I got mine in Sept of 2021 and it's the 22 Blackline Edition, green. Right now there are a few that you can find, that is 2022's and most of them with miles on them (15,000 to 30,000) are going for 5,000 or MORE ABOVE MSRP! So much for used car prices going down. Having paid MSRP for mine brand new I guess I should consider myself lucky!
As far as all the extra goodies honestly I would have paid for them if they had offered those packages in the Nori Green color, but that color is exclusive to the Black line edition. I also would havee prefered the captains seats in the second row, since I still consider this truck to be a 4 passenger vehicle. The 3rd row is useless or extremely limited and you would't want to use it for more than a short drive to take a couple of kids to the movies, but I would NOT put anyone back there for a long drive. For me it's the perfect size truck. If you have more than 2 kids I think you will find yourself wanting more usable space when traveling, but you could resolve some of that by using a cartop carrier. I added a rear compartment shelf made by Victory 4 X $ and absolutely love it to stash a few goodies tools etc I like to have on hand.

You'll start crunching bodywork well before you get into something that 4low and locked center diff can't get you out of.

I think I will bring my 1950 Chevy 5 window truck up there and with its grannie gears would probably make it thru your course. I enjoy your videos though.

hi Tommy, would you recommend buying a 2020 GX with 50K km (top trim) for along term purchase? Appreciate this awesome video from TFL!

At 50k km (31k+ miles) that GX is barley broken in. Toyota/Lexus fetch high prices on the used car market for a reason. If the frame is rust free, and the GX has had proper preventative maintenance, buy it.

In Aus the Toyota this would be a Toyota Prado and a Lexus variant. Not to sure about the Lexus version but the Prado has a very plastic heavy interior and looks only a mother can love. They also have a class-action lawsuit filed against them for continually selling the problematic 2.7L diesel motor.

My 460 has lots of leather accents in the interior. Not overly plastic like a Chevy or other US cars. The exterior... yeah, I feel like I learned to love it. haha. Removing the running boards and chopping the front for a steel/aluminum bumper makes a big difference. The 4.6 v8 and 6-speed are smooth as butter.

I was wondering how well this GX would do in this type of offroading if you don't rock crawl. I'm interested now especially because all I do is camping, logging roads and so on.

The GX should perform pretty well when you have the right tires; when you say logging roads I'm assuming muddy roads; just slap some mud tires on it and you'll be a-okay. Even if you get the "affordable" 55k MSRP GX (base trim), the brake vectoring system can figure it out. We had a situation (in our base trim GX) where we encountered some mud and slid off into a ditch and killed some bushes, we floored the throttle in 4Low with the center diff locked, the A-trac tried to work but after 3 seconds or so, it automatically disabled TCS or ESP or whatever it is because it knew we were in muddy/slippery conditions. And that pulled us out of that ditch and so we continued on.

Now every vehicle with an awd an some clearance wants call itself an offroad vehicle; only people who have been out there knows, 4Lo and without 4Lo are in different universe.

@@michaelblock3998 exactly, I'm mocking the vehicles that don't: forester, every bmw/merc/Audi suv with air suspension, amarok, explorer, etc.

I like my 470 better. I put some stock size ko2s on it and it does great both freeways and off roading
