🤦🏻♂️ Who would off-road the GX460. These vehicles are to built to stay on pavement. If you use these vehicles how they are built it will last for decades. They are not designed to pushed through these unrealistic conditions unless you want spend thousands fixing them prematurely.
Yea i beat the tar on it of my GXs off-road, had em airborne, up to the grill in water, just absolutely abused and it went 500k and my current one is at 250k. Just maintain them correctly
Ah yes, the GX460, famously built to conquer the treacherous terrain of suburban parking lots. I’ll be sure to keep it safe from those terrifying gravel driveways. Toyota must’ve really wasted money on that 4WD system, crawl control, and locking diff just for curb hopping. Thanks for the wisdom, Captain Pavement!
This gotta be a bait comment
Let me get in my Overland build GX. Drive through deep mud, crossing 2’ deep water, crawl up a rocky incline and come lifting off that rock you been living under. 🤣🤣
Unrealistic conditions? Let’s expand on that a little. The GX based on the Land Cruiser Prado is used to haul a family in to the bush and is depended on by thousands globally. What’s unrealistic is getting your name spelled correctly as you order your venti macchiato in the Starbucks drive-thru. Pffft. I guess Lexus missed the direction of its customer base with the latest generation.
A lot of people overlook the GX’s but once they drive it, they change their minds. They are solid vehicles and very capable especially when modified.
It drives so nice!
yeah cause it s probably the ugliest
@@reyjazz-u8p they’re definitely not the best looking of the bunch.
@@reyjazz-u8p where's your rig? 😅

*We took ours off-road stock from brand new (2021)... all we did since new was cut the bumper and add skids... stock suspension and height... it goes anywhere... GX is very impressive on and off road... great video*
We almost took it out this week with the stock setup and 285/70/R17s, but ran out of time.
Doesn’t it need decent mods to fit 33s?
I’ve got a ‘13 and love it. Did the 285/70/17s fit without a lift? If so did you have to heat and push back the fender liners?
@@aidan666 you're right. We'd need BMC and mess with the fender liners. That's why we ran out of time!
Best trade in you ever did. If nothing else, super reliable. And very capable. Best motor ever.
Welcome to the GX world!! I own a 470 and 460, both amazing vehicles. Excited to see how you modify this one.
Thanks! I'm looking forward to getting it out on some trips!
I have a much older Prado that I have modified to be a tough tourer (bull bar, winch, rock sliders, snorkel, front and rear diff lockers, drawer system, etc) that is still going strong at 400,000 km, and while no rock crawler, it has taken me over some of the most challenging wild-country roads in New Zealand without any difficulty. You have made a good choice.
Thanks for your great review. I think the Lexus GX460 is a very capable vehicle and 25.000 USD for a 2016 model would be like a dream here by us, because a ten year older nice LC 120 with between 200.000 and 250.000 km on the clock can easily pass eq. with 20.000 USD. I thought that Lexus GX at least had the same equipment as the top model LC 150 GX. But we have rarely needed all the standard equipment at work in our offroad transport in difficult condition, and with your clear mind and clever hands a lot of this is possible with cheap aftermarket kits. The most importent for us at work were the KDSS, the reliable Toyota rear air suspension for level loaded truck and increased towing capasity, the two lockers and the crawl control, but in real winter conditions the proper winter tires from Nokian might be more importent than most others. (LC 150 called Prado in some markets). Thanks for your review, and best wishes for your exiting offroad built.
I like your taste. I’ve got a 22 Tundra and a 23 GX. Love your videos so I’m excited to see what you do to the GX.
Congratulations. A great choice for your purpose. A high clearance front bar, rock sliders, a suspension lift, and off-road tyres, and it'll be a very capable off-road rig (to compliment its on-road touring comfort and luxury). In Australia, we never got the GX (only the LX), but its Toyota Prado cousin is very popular. It's common to see Prados here with suspension lifts (50mm), 35" tyres (both maximum legal limits for public road use here), Maxtraxs, and/or RTTs. And most Prados have the spare wheel carrier mounted at the rear door. Giving our Prados dual fuel tanks from factory. The underslung tyre carrier was only offered as a new variant on the last two face lifted models. Aimed more for urban dwellers. The new GX550 will be the first GX to come here. It'll be interesting to see both GX550 & the new 250 Series Prado side by side. Looking forward to see how you'll turn this into an off-road weapon. 👍
That’s awesome! It’s a lot of work getting 35s on the GX, so I wonder if there are some other subtle differences. I wish it came with the rear tyre carrier.
Land Cruiser Prado 250 was my first choice for our second vehicle, but I couldn’t justify the price.
Was great to meet you at Moore a few weeks ago. This is going to be quite the interesting build! I can see why you’d enjoy the Lexus for the kind of trips you take and the extra room for the family
This is probably the best decision you could’ve made and you will be very happy. Smooth, super capable, reliable, comfortable and easy to mod. I changed the suspension set up (lifted 3 inches) and solved angle problems.
I have the Ironman lift and foamcell pro suspension on my 23’ GX. Love it! Also added the Victory front bumper. I’ve ordered the Dissent Offroad rear bumper but don’t have it yet. Fun project for sure. I’m a little late to this video, but am looking forward to seeing this build.
This is my future dream for my solo rig. I can't wait to watch more with what you do to this!!!
We love it, and can’t wait to build it out!
I'm anxious to follow your modification journey! I have a 2017 that's identical to yours and totally stock. I'm not a mechanic so I'll be glad to see what you do with yours to make it more off road worthy. We love your videos, keep up the good work! PS: we expect that you will make many trips out here to Utah :)
I have a 2017 gx460, Welcome to the GX Fam!
I too damaged my front bumper on my first trip off road! Will be getting a Ironman offroad front bumper.
Can't wait to see the build. I bought a 2023 and I am starting to do a moderate mod. I am going with Victory Blitz and a dirtcom rear swingout. Already have wheels, rays, with MT baja boss.
In my opinion there's a big difference between toyota (lexus) vehicles built in japan vs north america. My wife's 22 gx460 feels so solid built like a tank everytime I take it offroad, it feels stout going over washboard roads or any terrain. switching to 4lo is so quick unlike my 2015 tundra, you made a great purchase.
I think you’re right.
I agree. They made these in the best auto plant.
Used to own a 2012 GX and it is hands down the best, most fun car I've ever owned. Currently drive a Sienna because we just needed more space and comfort.
FWIW with my 470 I did a bunch of Ouray and moab trails with just 1 size bigger tire and rock rails.
Rock rails are a super important first mod on these things.
Haven’t even finished the video and loving it!!!
This is going to be a fantastic build to watch!
Party on 🎉
Welcome to the GX Fam! Absolutely love mine (pretty full GX470 Build in my channel) and good call on the mods you mentioned! Went with the Dobinson MRR Remote Resi lift and really love how it handles both on and offroad!

I just had the CBI bumper installed about a week ago and its definitely worth it imo. The abysmal stock 21 degree approach angle got upped to about 34 degrees with the cbi bumper if my math is correct.
Sounds like it's going to be an exciting build. You are starting off with an amazing base. I can't wait to see the progress. Cheers!
Love that you picked one up. It’s a fun capable vehicle. Excited to see what you do with the build. Next time you are in Utah I’d love to hit the trail with you.
GX460 is one of the top 5 vehicles on planet earth that a consumer could have purchased. Lexus/toyota of old had pretty much every one of the greatest vehicles ever made till they introduced the current generation of vehicles that have taken a major fall from grace.
Couldn't have said it better. 👌🏾💜
wow, I just bought one of these a week ago, can't wait to watch
Your boy is getting big. Such a happy guy too. It’s a little bit of a head scratcher why you got rid of your jeep but I think you will still keep all your viewers and add a whole bunch more SUV off roaders. Keep the great videos coming and enjoy!
He is! He’s a getting that toddler attitude now though 😂
The Jeep was too small, uncomfortable for the long drives and the types of roads we drive, and had a big car payment we wanted to get rid of.
Little man seemed pretty stoked on the new ride!
Make sure what you intend to do with it before selecting a front bumper. A bumper trim or CBI Covert will work okay for general overlanding, but if you intend to go on, say, Hell's Revenge trail in Moab, you will not have enough clearance. Ask me how I know...
Interesting. I took my 4Runner through Hell’s Revenge with just a mild lift and stock bumpers, so I had hoped the GX could do it with a lift and the slightly higher CBI bumper. I’ll give it a go. If it doesn’t work out, I can always switch to a more aggressive bumper!
@@RevereOverland Yeah, I had high hopes too, but a few years ago when I took my GX460 with 2.5" lift and trimmed front bumper through HR I must have dragged nose or trailer hitch what seemed like 50 times (which was hard on the nose trim... a bumper like the Covert would have held up better). Since I have an annual trip to Moab that is important to me, I decided to go big with 35s, Victory Strike front bumper, and Coastal 4x4 rear bumper, etc. which have worked well. Heading to Moab again next week BTW.
Wow really cool! Solid V8! Remember you’ve gotta pony up for the premium gas. With the savings on the price vs the rubicon it’s taken care of! Forget the crawl control, not needed
It’s on a diet of 87 from here on out! I already installed crawl control, but only because I thought it was required to make MTS work! It’s not worth it!
It looks like you filmed an ad for Lexus as their products can be 'really' used. Well done! I traded my GX for an LX and further limited the LX's off road chops by adding a knockoff TRD body kit but I do not pretend I'll ever take it off road.
Best I can do is a gravel parking lot, sand, or grass. I do put it into 4LO when on unimproved surfaces to make sure everything still works, especially the tighter turn radius feature where it drags in the inside rear wheel on a turn to tighten your turn.
Nice, I’ve had my 2020 for two years. Did lift, sliders, bumper/side skirt trim, wheels/tires. This thing goes anywhere.
Awesome news! I started following your adventures after watching your Overland Movie with the 4Runner. Can't wait to see what you do for the build. Love my GX460.
Congrats on joining the GX family.
Congratulations. My coworker has one. I installed the ads bypass shocks and it’s a beast. Definitely need a swingout. We could not fit a skinny 33 underneath.
Good to know!
If it helps, I was able to fit a nominally 32 inch tire in the spare tire well with only one slight modification to the bracket above the swaybar.
Just bought a 2015 GX460 so I’m definitely subscribed and definitely going to follow this build.
Great choice! The first build video is edited and scheduled for next month.
MTS actually does more than just set how aggressively ATRAC kicks in. Mud/Sand has a slower throttle response than normal but also allows a ton of wheelspin and tries to keep all 4 wheels spinning the same speed. Also the only mode you can use in 4H. Loose Rock is like normal throttle, ATRAC on. Mogul I think specifically looks to clamp lifted wheels, and then Rock mode will basically try to prevent any wheelspin anywhere. It works best with center diff locked and at less than ~4000 rpm. At high rpms, it reverts back to just killing power in an attempt to save your tie rods.
I always thought it affected throttle control, but couldn’t find any evidence or details from Toyota/Lexus.
@RevereOverland you can feel it if you switch it on/off or between modes quickly. I feel like Toyota hypes up crawl control and just casually mentions MTS even though it is far more useful. You just have to have the slightest idea how to drive off road and then take time to figure it out since Toyota doesn't actually explain it.
@@ryanschmid7940 yeah I agree. Crawl control is really overrated and MTS is the useful feature!
We have a gx460 for this purpose. Looking forward to seeing how you outfit it. So far ours has a lift and 33s. Not much else. My main focus next will be the front fascia and running boards. Need to get that ground clearance.
That’s where I’m starting!
I love the GX 460 and can’t wait to see what you do with it! I almost had my wife convinced to get one and then she found out about the gas mileage lol
We really like it. It’s so comfortable and quiet! We seem to get 18-23 mpg, which is much better than I was expecting
Rob, Another great video, I am glad that you include your family in your videos. Family is so important. I like that OnX sponsors you and a few others, I use Gaia because I was able to find 4-5 videos on how to use it. I like the look of the new ride. I can't wait to see it built out. I have a 2013 Tundra that I am working on. no where near as nice as yours, but working on it. on a last note, you sure show some of the beautiful parts of Kentucky. Cheers,
There’s definitely a lot of info out there for Gaia! OnX hosts their own trailing webinars which are pretty useful too.
Good choice with the Tundra!
I BELEIVE you have a perfect platform for a tru Over Lander. I know there are as many opinions. out there as you have followers but you have to give and take when trying to have a vehicle for two different worlds. I hate to think about driving my JT to Oregon but love to think about wheeling there. You though can now do both comfortably and with a very good amount of off Road reliability... Good Luck,, I will be watching..
Beast, the reliability is a 11!
Def check out GXOR (GX Off-Road). Love the platform, I have a GX470. I hope you and your family enjoy the new truck!
I’ve been searching the group every time I have a question or decision to make!
When I got my GX it was cheaper than comparable 4runners. There’s this stigma with the brand being expensive and it’s really not. I love nothing more when someone tells my “Lexus is a fancy Toyota.” Yes, yes exactly why I love it.
Great video, looking forward to more gx content from you. Fyi, you may find some situations where CC is able to more effectively transfer torque than MTS in rock mode. I was in an uphill articulated situation where rock mode just wouldnt get the gx up and over, tried CC and it worked. So your purchase of CC may not be redundant after all :)
I have a 2011 Lexus GX460, I put in 4 Toyo Open Country MT 35x12.5R18 and 2.5 Dobinson suspension, body mount cut, a little cut and timing of plastic, I keep the steps and no problem go anywhere,
I heard 35s were a lot of work, so went with 285/70R17
I have the cbi you mentioned. The other options will give you more approach, but the cbi blends in to the front the best. I have the cbi stealth on my 21 GX and it's been great.
That’s what I really like about it, plus it’s lighter. I was tempted by the Ironman, but figured if the CBI wasn’t enough that I could always switch it out!
Can I ask for a status report on your tundra? How many miles? Any issues? How's the reliability so far on the turbos? I feel like your one of the few people really putting it to the test.
63k miles. I lost a trim piece on a mirror that was a common problem on early models. There have been a couple of other small things that were user or shop/mechanic error, but it has been a fantastic truck.
Awesome video Rob! I’m looking forward to another Toyota build! Can’t wait to see the upgrades on it…💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Thanks! We can’t wait to get it built out too
Jeeps are overrated and have the worse reliability I’d take a Lexus anyday
Well…as a GX460 owner I’d disagree with your statement. Jeeps are not overrated. They are the best at what they’re designed to do. I think reliability statements such as yours are generally just repeated opinions established over 30 years ago. Toyota has its fair share of reliability problems too. The fanboys just do a good job of shouting down people on the interwebs. For the record, I’ve only owned one Jeep (‘97 TJ) and seven Toyota Tacomas/4Runners.
@@Army4Runner полностью с вами согласен🤝
@@Army4Runnernope, you're dead wrong lol
@Army4Runner jeeps dismal reliability has been earned over 50 years. Yes there are individual examples of better than average reliability, but as a whole, they are not good.
Make sure you pay attention to your water pump and coolant. Drain and fill it. Our’s started leaking at 90kish. Previous owner never drained it and it ate through the gasket.
I’ve heard that and the radiator are weak spots.
@@RevereOverland also the valley!
Congrats on the purchase! The GX is a great platform but as a fellow GX owner, Please do not buy Iron man suspension. Their suspension is WAY over priced for sub-par performance and quality. Explore other options like Dobinsons, OME, Bilstein, icon, or Apache AX2’s.
I have 3 friends who have had iron man who have recently switched away from them due to poor performance and quality not holding up. Also don’t forget to pickup some bits from Dr. KDSS to compensate for the KDSS system. You may want to get a 1/4 spacer for the front shock mount because you will most like KDSS lean after a lift (very common issue).
Great choice and great content compared to the new Toyota ads UA-camrs make nowadays
Congrats and welcome to the GX world.
I plan on getting a GX470 soon. Sweet rig!
Not the vehicle I expected but will be a nice project to build into what you need.
It wasn’t what we originally planned! It wasn’t the second choice either, but once we test drove it we were sold.
Wow very good test drive I love it thanks
Using ECT 2nd is a great way to adjust the ATRAC without MTS
It’s like watching where we started two years ago. 🔥
It’s a great SUV! I was about to get one until I realized legroom in second row is tight for tall teenagers so had to buy something bigger, also made in Japan and with a V8.
Have you been in 1? I know people that are 6ft2 and sit comfortably
Yes, no room for leg extensions and you sit on a steep decline with knees above hips like in a deep squat. Similar to an FJ60 I had years ago. Check out the_car_mom’s review. She is probably 5ft8 if I had to guess
crossing those streams, were you worried about getting water inside your rear diff??
Yeah, I think it needs breathers. The alternator is also pretty low.
Love this. I look forward to the build videos.
Congrats. Please go for the full high clearance bumper in the front. Isn't it possible to fit 35s?
It is possible to do 35s, but it’s a lot of work. I’m going with the same size 33s I had on my 4Runner. I’ll start with the CBI mid clearance and can always cut more off if necessary!
I was thinking “this guys got more money than sense”. Lol. It’s gonna be cool to see you make it more capable.
Maybe I do have more money than sense, but only because I don’t have much of either!

Hahahahahahaaaa! I'm getting into real estate and this is the next ride i'm looking to get into! That's funny they say that!
33's do fit in spare tire holder. stock wheel size is 33
Stock tire size is 265/60R18, which is 30.5” in diameter
@@RevereOverland you're right! I don't know why I think I read somewhere else that it was 33. But other sources claim a 33 can fit in spare tire deflated . Worth trying .
Can you explain more about “buying the modules?”
It’s just a module that you switch in! I put a link in the description to the guides with part numbers.
What’s the total cost of everything you’re doing?
One downside of the MTS mod is that it disables ATRAC when not in an MTS mode which by default engages without MTS module.
Are the low skirts not just undermining Everything even the purpose of the video?
You wondered if it was worth airing down the stock tires and the answer to anyone that didn't know. The answer is yes. If nothing else it will at least help you by not puncturing the tire as easily as it would be if they were aired up fully.

Hi - so, you traded in the jeep for the Lexus. What happened to the Tundra (was it traded for the Jeep)?
I had the same decision and move ... away from a stone age old Landrover... I do understand ;) - at least i think...
The Tundra is still here! We’re out filming in it this week!
I’d love a Land Rover, but I don’t have the mechanical skills to keep it running. Lol.

Let me know if you sell your bumper.
How deep can it go… ??
That depends on how much you want to spend fixing it! I replaced the differential gear oil after this, but was going to anyway since I have no record of when it was last done.
If you put 35x12.5R18 or 35x12.5R17, you never get a regret for doing so
@@vimejiasve I think a lot of people regret it due to lack of power and parts durability. If you actually wheel hard on a set of 35x12.5’s then CV’s, tie rods and rear axle are all at a much higher risk of breaking

The Jeep died.... didn't it?
Nope! We traded it in.
No! Don’t do the Ironman. Do Dobinsons. IMS is decent mid-level. MRR is baller and adjustable. They can’t be beat for durability.
I have the MRR’s and really like them but Ironman FCP are also very good.
I love the Dobinsons MRRs, but didn’t want to spend that kind of money on this build. The FCP from Ironman is supposed to be a solid mid range choice.

Get rid of that hideous lower front bumper, add some sliders and slightly larger all terrain tires, and you are good to go. For those looking at buying a GX, compare it to a 10-15 year old LX before you buy. Also, IMO, there is no comparison between Lexus or Land Cruiser, and Jeep. One is focused on off-road travel, the other on highway cruising. But for a cruiser, the Off road capabilities of the Lexus are likely going to get you where ever you want to go short of rock crawling. And I have heard that the newer jeeps are prone to breakdowns. My LX has survived four trips to Moab so far without any mechanical issues, and the six hour drive back to Denver was a breeze. But I do stay off most of the difficult rock climbing trails. Elephant Hill was the toughest one I tackled, with just an occasional rear bumper or exhaust pipe scrape.
I looked at a 570, but decided to do the GX since it would probably be more relatable for the channel!
It still has atrac.
Boggles my mind who would buy a plastic crap box like the wrangler for $60k
Running boards? Meh, rock sliders….well maybe.
