Colombo had already spotted the flower on the ground minutes before the conductor had arrived inside the room.
Colombo always looks for things that don't belong in places; a fresh flower with no pot nearby.
Colombo probably picked the flower, and put it back to see if someone would try to hide it.
So Colombo knew he was lying right away; and was the main suspect.

A lot of her lines and the general's with columbo were done without the actors present because Falk was on strike. If you look at the scene where Alex remembers the flower next to the piano leg, it is in a different position when Columbo is searching the room. He probably picked it up as he does with all evidence then replaced it to find out if someone would come back to remove it. This is why he asks Alex "Did you find something?" after he picked it up. Police are trained to notice details and the best of them become detectives. Columbo is the cream of the crop. The amazing thing is he can do all this with only one eye.

After countless viewings here and via DVD, I'm surprised this is the first I've noticed that the entire "brick" wall shakes when he climes through it. I like catching mistakes like this because it adds charm to this already charming show. You can still tell the effort they went through in production. But seeing things like the wall, the second bead in the umbrella when columbo goes to london, or the mannequin head that was assaulted by the mortician. To me these only add charisma to my favorite show and demonstrate that it's not special effects, sets, costumes, or over the top action that makes a show brilliant. Just great characters performing greater writing.

Noticed all birds in cages in all films are in too small cages with no food or water dish. The bird could be as big as a crow he'll be in a small - usually round - cage with nothing to eat or drink. Or they'll have multiple small birds in a - usually round cage which all birds HATE, by the way, and can make them go nuts - and still no food or water. It's often clear the birds are alive and not dummies. So why is this the case? Probably because birds are the messiest eaters. Take away the food and water for the shot and then give it back until the next time. I hope they don't make them wait too long in between takes!

This particular murderer gave up far too easily. But it's tv and the show has to end. What I like about Columbo is that he knows who the murderer is early on, almost instinctually, and proceeds to harass that person to get more information, frustrating them in a most entertaining way.

There's no way they could prove he didn't put it on after the concert and they had no photo proof it was on the floor of the apartment before he got there.
